5:01 am
already high in the middle east, chaos in one quiet south bay neighborhood after a gunman fires multiple rounds, police respond with force and update on the suspect and a scare for one neighbor. also $1 billion boost for caltrain. we're live this morning with all new funding and how it may help fast track an ambitious extension plan. this is today in the bay and this is also monday morning. thanks for starting your day with us. 5:00 right now i'm laura garcia and i'm marcus washington. we'll get a look at that forecast with meteorologist carrie hall in just a bit. but mike, you got some issues going on on the road this morning. yeah, but better news, i guess we'll say that. okay. issues. we'll start with better news for those issues over the weekend right here. this is 680 that had a tremendous amount of roadwork going on. it was still open. so folks went there north and southbound 680. both had lane restrictions just north of the dublin interchange. and i hear it caused quite a slowdown for folks traveling through the area. but that is clear cleared early this morning in fact maybe
5:02 am
last night. so we'll get 37 though eastbound 37 was also fully closed. we have another section here and you can see the water alongside there. that was between sears point and mare island just minutes ago. we got confirmation they reopened eastbound 37. so that's good news. both projects, as we look at the map, are clear from this area. we're looking at eastbound 37. back to that easy speed. it's counter commute, but still, if it was closed, that would be tremendous. reroute for folks. again, that should have a smooth drive this morning. even now we're hearing that everything is okay. the live cameras that i checked seem fine. contra costa county no major problems. and also through the tri-valley, the dublin interchange operates with no delays, no closures for six, 85, 80. and of course, just starting to see some more traffic coming out of the altamont pass. right on schedule. all right, well, we're starting out this morning with a clear sky, and we will be warming up the next couple of days. and also looking at a lot more of that sunshine in the valleys. we'll see temperatures in the mid 80s for tomorrow and then for a memorial day weekend.
5:03 am
if we don't say this often, it will be cooler and breezy, but we're looking at temperatures in the low 70s for a high today in oakland, 77 in novato and los gatos. today we're looking at a high of 78 degrees. so we'll talk about the rest of the week coming up in a few minutes. back to you. all right. thanks, carrie. well, we are following breaking news for you out of oakland this morning. that's where police are investigating the shooting where one person was injured. we do have video from the scene. you can see right here. this is showing the victim's car after it crashed into a construction site. we're told this happened about 90 minutes ago in downtown, about one block from broadway and 14th street. so far, police are not providing further details. breaking news overseas iran's state media confirming the country's president and foreign minister were killed in a helicopter crash. reports say the helicopter made some sort of crash or hard landing in northern iran. rescuers were slowed by bad weather and heavy fog. first vice president mohammed makhmour, now the interim president of the

man shooting a gun on karma drive. this is near capitol expressway and story road. no one else was injured. now, when officers arrived, they say that that suspect was still shooting. an officer returned fire, critically injuring that person. now, we spoke with one neighbor who says that he feared for his children. it's a little concerning because they're both little girls and we were constantly taking walks and, it's a little alarming to know that that happened here. now, san jose police, they are now investigating along with the da's office. our kris sanchez is following this story. she's going to have more for us in our next half hour. the final week in the criminal hush money trial of former president donald trump is set to start this morning in manhattan. today's proceedings will start with continued defense cross-examination of former trump lawyer and fixer michael cohen. prosecutor allege cohen paid $130,000 to stormy daniels in an effort to keep an alleged encounter between trump and the adult actress secret

days before the 2016 presidential election. it's unknown if the former president will take the stand in his own defense, moving you forward on a vision to extend caltrans footprint in san francisco, providing much easier access for peninsula commuters today in the bay's ginger conejero saab live for us in san francisco this morning and ginger. this project is set to get a big funding boost. that's right. marcus, good morning to you. let's revisit this project. it's called the portal and it will extend caltrain rail line, which currently ends at fourth and king street in the city, into salesforce towers or salesforce transit center, which is more in the heart of downtown san francisco. now that transit center has been up and running for years now. but below the street level bus concourse is another massive structure that was built to accommodate trains. now, those trains cannot yet get there, and that is where this project, led by the transbay joint powers authority, steps in. it recently got an over $3
5:09 am
billion boost, almost $3.4 billion from the federal government. the head of the agency recently shared. the portal is now in the engineering phase of the capital investment grant, meaning nearly half of the $8 billion price tag would be funded. now here's animation from the transbay joint powers authority, and you can see there how the trains will go underground. it will then turn under second street and then eventually arrive at the transit center. that's under natoma and min streets in the city. it's not a long stretch that would be connected, but the price has ballooned over the years and unfortunately, that number will continue to climb the longer it takes to get the project started. the agency is still short, about 2 to $3 billion now. today federal, state and regional leaders, however, celebrating the progress that is being made, the portal moving forward from this now the anticipated end date to this project is still years away,
5:10 am
2032 to be exact. and that would also eventually accommodate the high speed rail project. even with a bigger vision to connect northern and southern california. so the highs the hopes are really high for this, marcus. and today we're just one step closer to making that happen. marcus yeah, i was just going to say just as long as we keep moving forward, that's all that matters. all right. thanks, ginger. and that's what we're doing on this monday morning. look at that. the sun is starting to kind of peek up. nice sunrise overlooking the south bay in san jose. we're kind of coming off a mild weekend. i would say for this time of year. carrie. yeah, it was. and it gets even milder as we get into next weekend. we'll talk about that. but we will have a warm up in between. and we're most, for the most part, starting out in the upper 40s and low 50s. as you head out the door and anywhere from san francisco to the east bay on southward for the north bay. we're in the 40s and we're now at 43 in sonoma. cool start in hercules as you're stepping out. it's going to be in the mid 50s.
5:11 am
and as we go throughout the day, a lot of sunshine and temperatures warming up, headed for the low 70s for today, up to 78 for san jose as well as napa. and we'll talk about that warm up in a few minutes. mike, you're looking for lower numbers on your maps and i've been seeing some lower numbers. in fact, the bay area has dropped out though, because everybody else got even lower over the weekend. no longer on the best of list for our state, but our best for hayward is for 55 at our stores on hesperian boulevard and hayward. sunnyvale has for 69 at national petroleum on old san francisco road in the middle here, and then in the north bay mill valley has their best of 475 at the arco on redwood highway. as always, remind you to report or find information at gasbuddy.com. that's where we share that today on the roadways. a smooth drive out of the area. i did want to put one more note for highway 37, even though we've had the last of our full scheduled weekend closures, both directions will have some work going on overnight, probably mostly in the eastbound direction where they have to do some striping work. so keep that
5:12 am
in mind all week there. that will be overnight. no problems on the bay bridge. a great start for the morning commute. back to you. thanks, mike. are you looking to upgrade your iphone? you might want to wait. coming up next on today in the bay, the new trade in offer apple is preparing to announce. plus, it's not her even though it sounds like her, but it's not. that'll make a lot more sense when you see our business news. and one of the largest collections of princess diana's iconic dresses going up for auction, we're going to take a closer look at some of her most iconic looks. set to be incl

the dow the best measure of the market? no. is it noteworthy? heck yes. nvidia reports profits this week bloomberg meantime reporting apple will give you more credit for your old phone if you buy a new one. the promotion is going to last two weeks, but apple has not mentioned it yet. new iphones are not selling as well as they used to. people are just satisfied with the phones they have, but it's hit apple's bottom line over the weekend, blue origin launched six passengers into a short hop into space. it's notable because blue origin had been grounded for quite some time after an unmanned launch went awry. this one went fine. former air force captain ed dwight became the oldest person ever to go into space. it was absolutely terrific. and the views i mean, just even i couldn't see it. i could see. absolutely fantastic. actor william shatner had been the oldest person in space. they

were both 90, but dwight is a few months older than shatner. dwight in the middle in this picture was the first black astronaut candidate back in the days of the space race. president kennedy insisted on diversifying the team, but nasa never picked him. he went on to become a very talented sculptor. so ed dwight, give him a google. he is a super interesting guy. san francisco's open i announced this morning it was suspending the use of one of its ai voices, introduced last week. you can choose from various voices like breeze and ember and juniper and sky. turns out sky sounds a lot like the actress scarlett johansson. the company says it didn't mean to make it sound like scarlett johansson, though. scarlett johansson did a movie called her where she played an ai, and sam altman, the ceo of openai, says it's his favorite movie. but the voice is not supposed to sound like scarlett johansson. listen for yourself. here's the movie, then. live demo from chatgpt. do you have a name or, yes. samantha, where

did you get that name from? i gave it to myself, actually. hey, chatgpt, how are you? i'm doing fantastic. thanks for asking. how about you? how's your day going? i'm doing great. all right. what's the verdict? it's got the tone of her, you know, but i don't. there's something about it. the company says it's just a coincidence that their favorite movie of all time has the same sound. interesting. wow all right, we'll be listening. you're right. exactly. all right. thanks. you bet. all right. professional basketball's newest star is talking to today, and she says, you know what? every day there is something new to learn. check this out. i think just learning day by day, that's going to be the biggest thing for myself. and i think continuing to stack days, whether you learn one little thing or you, you learn a lot, i think continuing to improve is going to be the biggest part of it for myself. but also don't lose the fun of it as i have. i need to tell you there, that's indiana fever top pick caitlin

clark talking to reporters there. you know what she's taking the wnba by storm talking this morning to hoda. now in clark's most recent game, the crowd in brooklyn set a new york liberty attendance record. wow. all right, so you can see that entire interview later today on today. that's at 7 a.m. right after us here on today in the bay next month, some of princess diana's most iconic gowns and handbags will hit the auction block in new york city. the carlyle hotel will host the princess diana elegance and royal collection auction coming up on june 27th. before then, items will be on display for an exclusive private exhibition. they include princess diana's fairy tale wedding dress, her picture perfect outfit from a dance with john travolta. everyone probably remembers that that happened at the white house and the midnight blue strapless gown she wore to the 1986 phantom of the opera premiere. you can see more of her collection and her style

defining dresses, garments and accessories later this morning. they'll feature them on the today show. she had iconic style , for sure. absolutely. if anybody's interested in some of my old cargo shorts, i can probably auction those off, break those out, maybe something i don't know. it's getting a little cooler this week. you might remember the ones that like zip zipped or whatever. you can make them go from pants or shorts. pants to shorts. so versatile. exactly. yeah you probably need something like that. something convertible or the ones with the buttons all the way down the side. oh yes, the reveal. we are going to go from warm weather to cool for the weekend. and you know, our mornings are always chilly. so we're starting out in the low 50s. we're at 53 right now in oakland and about the same in san jose, 52 in palo alto and san francisco. and we've all been bothered by this. the high amount of pollen in the air, olive trees are really high right now. grass is moderate. weeds and mold are low at this point. but we are also going to
5:21 am
see a lot more of those flowers blooming as our temperatures stay nice and mild. in dublin, hayward and fremont, we're up to about 75 for today. 78 martinez and in napa and san francisco will be in the upper 60s. looking at tomorrow, we're going to boost those temperatures for some of our valleys, bringing it up a few degrees. so los gatos will see a high of 8383. also in livermore, 87 for fairfield and also low 80s for santa rosa into napa and novato. and then on wednesday, it's just a touch cooler, will get a stronger ocean breeze that will help moderate the temperatures, cool it off a few more degrees, and that cooling trend sticks with us into the weekend. so really, we only have a couple of days of warm weather and we don't always say this. it's going to be cool for our memorial day weekend. so we're going to see those temperatures coming down. check out walnut creek going from 83 tomorrow to only 66 for a high temperature on saturday. and
5:22 am
sunday is only going to be in the upper 60s, so that's some great grilling weather. and also attending some of those ceremonies in and around the bay area that we'll see on memorial day. looking ahead, though, for the week, we're still going to have some warm temperatures, a bit of a taste of summer, but then we'll cool things off for the weekend and then looking at san francisco here, we're up to about 70 for tomorrow, but only 59 degrees on saturday, so a significant cool down there mike. it's looking pretty calm right now. it is. we do see a little sign of the morning commute creeping in right here. highway 37 westbound again. both directions reopened. there will be overnight roadwork though i think they have to do some striping. remember they finished that weekend project and it's clear over here. i did hear word of a crash, but i think it just cleared from the grid. as we're getting ready to report westbound 80 right around highway four. so that would be a critical point. but again, i believe everything's just cleared. the speed sensors are fine there. and through the rest of contra costa county, alameda

county with smooth drive. there is a crash over on the right shoulder in the commute direction. you see no slowing on the sensors out of the altamont pass, but i'll watch that closely. a couple of new incidents on the peninsula. i don't think there's an issue, but we'll track that as well for one on one. here's san jose, easy drive back to you. thanks, mike. helping pave the way for future teachers. coming up next on today in the bay, the company giving opportunities to graduates looking to get into iorly childhood educat

5:31 am
to our monday morning as we are seeing a clear sky not only in san francisco, but all across the bay area and we'll have a slight warm up with those temperatures later on for the next couple of days. here's a look at our highs. we'll be up to about 78 for san jose. still really comfortable. we will see a few low 80s in spots like fairfield and concord, but mostly upper 70s for the north bay, with a high of 77. in novato and san francisco, 68 degrees. tomorrow will be the warmest day, so we'll talk about that and what's ahead. mike, you have a look at what's happening in the north bay. yeah. it's a beautiful drive right here. oh, here. north san pedro road. let's show you closer to the screen. you can see that street sign. that means those taillights are heading south over the hill, eventually to the golden gate bridge for some, without any major problems. that's good stuff. highway 37 reopened overnight. i will talk about the little slowing that's going on westbound. your typical commute build o now, highway four over on the right side shows slowing into where it says concord. you see that out of pittsburgh and bay point? no major issues. a couple of smaller crashes on the
5:32 am
peninsula. i'm watching those on 101. traffic's at speed. but notice this a little bit of slowing just popped up. it was a little worse for the last few minutes i was concerned. this is 680 down toward mission. i'm going to scan all the reports again, let you know if there's a problem. back to you. well, new overnight, a building fire in san jose under investigation. so this all started a little after midnight at north fifth street. this is near jackson and japantown. now, this building was under renovation. firefighters had to actually cut a hole in the roof of that building in order to allow those flames to come out and to fight the fire. now, the cause of that fire still under investigation, a captain with san jose fire says that the owners of that building tell him that they've actually experienced issues of the unhoused entering that building in the past, they've had some issues with homeless people staying in the building or in camping in the area of the building. the possibility exists, i don't know, but the possibility exists that they might be parted from track one. they might be part of that issue
5:33 am
as far as the source of the of the of the fire, i can't tell you that that's a legal certainty by any stretch of the imagination. so that's one of the theories that we're examining at this time. firefighters also say that building was unoccupied at the time of the fire developing right now. a suspected gunman, police say terrorized the south bay neighborhood is in the hospital this morning with life threatening injuries. today in the base, kris sanchez is live in san jose police headquarters. and chris, the quick response from san jose police may have made all the difference here. well, certainly, you know, if this guy was shooting indiscriminately into the neighborhood, who knows what could have happened. but police arrived pretty quickly and now we know that the district attorney's office for santa clara county will also be investigating this shooting as well as internal affairs for san jose police, because it was an officer involved shooting. now, last night the scene was pretty chaotic, but they seem to be focused in on a gray minivan with flat tires and broken windows. that was after the
5:34 am
suspect was shot by police before that, police called 911 to report hearing shots and according to the sapd spokesman, the suspect still firing shots when officers arrived. it's a little concerning because they're both little girls and we're constantly taking walks and, it's a little alarming to know that that happened here. now, that's one of the neighbors that we talked with. we talked with other neighbors who were also forced from their home. they say that they weren't able to get back home going on seven hours last night. some of them just opted to stay elsewhere. we did ask around to see if anybody knew this man, no one seemed to know who he was, that officer. i mean, that suspect once again, is, fighting for their life in the hospital, life threatening injuries. no officers were injured in this shooting in san jose. chris sanchez. today in the bay, in fact, that so many people live in that area. it's a great thing that no one was
5:35 am
seriously hurt outside of that victim. art. chris. thank you. well, breaking news overnight. the country of iran appointing a new president after its former president died in a helicopter crash over the weekend. today in the bay is bob redell joining us from the newsroom this morning. so how are local iranian americans reacting here, bob? well, good morning to you, marcus and laura. there's not much love lost for iranian president ebrahim raisi, who had been sanctioned by the united states over his involvement in the mass execution of thousands of political prisoners back in 1988, at the end of the iran-iraq war. within the past 24 hours, iran confirmed that raisi, along with the iranian foreign minister and two other dignitaries, were killed in a helicopter crash in foggy weather while traveling back from a visit to the iranian border with azerbaijan. we spoke with a man with a group called the iranian-american community of northern california. he tells us that iranians he's spoken with are hopeful this crash could weaken the current regime and make way for change, driven by the people. this is all
5:36 am
because the iranian regime is afraid of the next nationwide uprising, which in no doubt is going to happen sooner or later. this guy was a murderer. he was a he was one of those people that was responsible for killing political prisoners. i don't think that many people are that sad. and maybe some people are a little happy inside in iran, the president is actually second in command, the country's supreme leader, the ayatollah khamenei. he remains in control. president raisi was considered to be a possible successor to the supreme leader. iran's first vice president, mohammad mokhber. he has been named interim president. iranian law requires a presidential election to be called within 50 days. khamenei, the supreme leader, says there will be no disruption to state affairs. reporter live bob redell today in the bay. all right, thanks for the latest
5:37 am
there, bob. it is 536 right now. an investigation is underway into a deadly crash involving a pedestrian in contra costa county. it happened last night around 9:00 at willow pass road and poinsettia avenue in baypointe. video from the scene shows a large police presence. no word on what led up to the crash or if the driver stayed at the scene, but police say there's no crosswalk where that crash happened. a recently opened south bay food hall, already experiencing growing pains. san jose's downtown food hall opened at the start of the year, but already struggling, so that building is built as a food hub with dozens of restaurants. now, only a handful of those businesses are operating, and just one was actually open when our crew actually stopped by yesterday. one restaurant owner believes that there are several problems to blame here, including the design of the building and confusing entrance, along with a ban on signage outside. it's very slow. we are just getting the customers online only with the delivery
5:38 am
platforms like doordash and all that are for here because we don't have any visibility on the front. we are getting very less amount of customers. cloud kitchens operates the hall in part as means of boosting food delivery and pickup. we reached out to the company but we did not get a response. it is 537 on your monday morning sun coming up over the bay area as we take a live look over san francisco. so carrie's got a look at our forecast for this monday. it starts out all clear. looks really nice. it's a cool morning with some low 50s. and as we go throughout the day in berkeley it will be 54 at 8:00. and then at noon it's 65 degrees. we'll see temperatures in the upper 60s for today with a mostly sunny sky and will be compare our high temperature for today versus what we typically see for this date in santa rosa. we're going to be slightly above what's average. and in concord also about the same 80 degrees there in san francisco. so 68,
5:39 am
which is slightly above average as well. oakland 73. and we're normally in the upper 60s, while in san jose we're going to see a high of 78. our average high temperature for this date is 74 degrees. and it gets even warmer tomorrow before temperatures come back down. so we'll talk about all of the trends for the week coming up. mike, you see some slowing now in fremont. yeah we checked on that big slowing and then it eased up. and it's actually just cleared to green. now in the last few seconds. so good news. no incidents reported. although there was a crew in the area overnight. and that may be what was slowing our sensors just a little bit. we're i was worried because it was early for any type of volume to be coming through the area, and holds with the dublin interchange and a little build for 84. this is all coming out of the altamont pass or most of it there. contra costa county looks great. so does the south bay, with a little predictable slowing for north 101 through san jose. so we'll jump up here a note as we look ahead. overnights may still see some lane closures, alternating lane closures for highway 37 in either direction because of that roadwork. the
5:40 am
paving that was done eastbound. it's reopened over the weekend, but there's still some striping work to be done and a little slowing westbound. that's the morning commute. that's all predictable. we know about that. we look ahead to highway four, where we're seeing more traffic coming in down through concord. so walnut creek will see more traffic at the interchange with no major slowing over here we see a little blips. richmond. pinole coming down. hercules westbound 80 builds the volume toward the toll plaza where we are actually starting to see a little build up already. it's been about five, maybe seven minutes since those metering lights were turned off. so this backup or the slowdown is starting pretty early, but we'll watch. it's kind of gradual. back to you. thanks, mike. 539 for you right now and just into our newsroom, a key court ruling for julian assange ahead here on today in the bay. we're going to talk about the impact it will have on his possible extradition here to the united states and both leading candidates for president hit the campaign trail, but in very different ways. plus, a breast cancer survivor sharing her journey to recovery. the reason she's

first time, and for others, this is an annual event. many of the top runners were from san francisco. a lot of the marathons, you know, i run, you end up getting kind of isolated and there's an elite corral. but here, you know, you're just kind of with the masses and, you get lumped in with people in costumes, people who are just here to have a great time, you know, power ranger led the first minute of the race, and you don't get that in other races. so it's fun to it's fun to switch it up and really kind of get a little extra energy like that. and a little history for you here. bay to breakers has been going on since 1912. it began as a way to showcase the city's resilience after the devastating 1906 earthquake. i'd like to see the costumes then, as opposed. oh, yeah. yeah. as if there were any. we'll see. yeah. i always tell people most races you worry about who's behind you, but the bay to breakers, sometimes you worry about who's in front of you and you're like, oh, i don't want that view. i didn't know what they have. unless you're in really good, don't have on. that's true. a little cooler this weekend. yes. it was definitely for that starting out

in the morning. and it was foggy. well this morning all clear. this is even a different view compared to yesterday morning. so as we take a look at walnut creek, it is a sunny sunrise on this monday morning and the temperatures are in the upper 40s and low 50s. as we're getting started, it's 43 in sonoma. that's one of the cooler spots, but we're right now at 50 in morgan hill and 49 in palo alto. as we take a look at what's making us sneeze this morning, the olive trees are high on the pollen count and moderate for grass pollen, weeds and mold is currently low. and we know it's been pretty bad recently, and it's another day when we are trying to get outside and enjoy the sunshine and the mild temperatures. we're up to 75. in mountain view today and 75 in dublin. concord 80 degrees. only a few low 80s for the inland valleys, but i do think we'll see a lot more 80s tomorrow, even up to 87, in fairfield, while san jose will see a high of 82 degrees and

some upper 70s for hayward, as well as oakland and napa. tomorrow, 83 degrees 84, in santa rosa. and then on wednesday, we're still seeing a couple of low 80s, but the trend will be for things to cool off as we head into our memorial day weekend. and yes, that's coming up very soon here. if you're making plans, it's going to be definitely cooler, but we're not expecting any rain chances. all the rain staying to the north or just kind of fizzling out before it gets here. so take a look at gilroy. we're going from low 70s today to upper 70s tomorrow and then only mid 60s for this weekend. we don't get the memorial day weekends like this very often. we'll be very nice and comfortable and also looking at more sunshine in the forecast. the warmest day will be tomorrow with some spots in the low 80s, and then we'll bring it back to the 70s the rest of the week inland. while san francisco will see temperatures topping out at 70 degrees tomorrow. and then we'll see upper 50s for saturday. so

we'll need to bundle up again. mikey, we're tracking the build up at the bay bridge. yeah. and it's no surprise there is a build up at the bay bridge. it is pretty gradual, though, so look at that. only now are we seeing most of the lanes filled in toward the end of the parking lot here, but we have some of the lanes that are still open. that's great. coming off the overcrossing a little build now making its way back to the overcrossing itself, highway 37 continues to build the biggest change, not highway four, although there's more backup there. it's right here, coming down the east shore freeway, westbound, of course, into richmond and through richmond. we see more volume, more slowing. nothing surprising over here in the south bay. again, nothing surprising about the northbound 101 slowdown as well. and that's starting to ease up over the next 5 or 7 minutes, we'll see things really start to ease up for about a half hour. then it kicks in again. altamont pass hasn't been a problem. an easy flow of traffic doubling, interchange. same thing again. doubling interchange. fully opened after the weekend work, but keep in mind that there will be some lane restrictions later on as they continue to project for southbound 680 and coming
