beaten to death a week ago, possibly the fifth murder victim who appear to be linked to a string of victims killed by efren valdemoro who was killed tuesday after a high speed chase. in the body of the car was sippedy tran believed kidnapped by valdemoro as she left work tuesday evening. the bodies of two other women were found in valdemoro's home monday, the home where he lived on occasion. the hercules vigil ended with a wish to help those who might harm others. >> and hope that one day anyone who is distressed or worried can find someone, some place where they can go to get help. morning... i asked one >> reporter: searchers say they'll be back at pittsburg landfill tomorrow morning. i asked one officer how he can be sure that frederick solis' body is in the dump. he indicated they aren't entirely sure, but they have no choice but to keep looking with the information they have. >> seems that way, but with all that ground to cover, how do they know when to stop

searching? >> reporter: they do know how much comes in every day, 2,500 tons, they do know where it goes, so they can calculate how much has come in, search those areas and decide when they want to go any further. a vallejo man has been killed shot to death in broad daylight. it happened on springs road about noon today. neighbors heard several shots and saw the suspect flee in what looked like sailor or white honda. the 42-year-old -- a silver or white honda. the 42-year-old victim is vallejo's fourth killing victim of the year. 48-year-old gary gomez police say got into a fight with his teenager son on a late night fishing trip. his wife was injured when she tried to stop the fight. none of the injuries are serious. gomez will be rained wednesday. efforts to track -- arraigned wednesday. efforts to crack down on drunk drivers appear to have

paid off. arrests are up slightly from last year. statewide there have been 990dui arrests. the cost of cocktails could raise in san francisco if supervisors have their way. they're proposing a fee on alcoholic drinks. linda yee on what local bar patrons think about that. >> reporter: hangovers are no fun and the bar tab won't be either if a new alcohol fee is imposed. >> it gets up to both digits. >> reporter: the san francisco board of supervisors is considering a new fee for alcohol, something like five cents extra for a bottle of beer, much more for wine or hard liquor, an idea that this bar owner cannot drink to. >> it will impact our business. >> reporter: he says customers will go away. >> they'll change their old habits and drink at home instead of drinking here. they won't quit drinking. >> reporter: this new fee for a

glass of alcohol suspected to generate $16 million for anti- alcohol abuse programs. last year the public health department said it spent 13 1/2 million dollars just to get chronic drunks off the streets. the idea is to offset city costs like paramedic responses and emergency room visits. >> the city is in big enough trouble. i'm all for it. >> reporter: but long time bartender al poole said it's tough enough on businesses and customers. restaurant already tack on surcharges to pay for city mandated healthcare. >> what's happened in the last few years here, you know, minimum wage in san francisco is higher than anywhere and in the whole healthcare thing, you know. so the cost of doing business just keeps going up and up in this city. >> yeah, not a problem for me and i think for most people it's such a -- when most people that go out and enjoy themselves, you know, you throw a nickel on the tab and they're not really going to notice it. >> reporter: most customers say they don't mind if it is for a

good cause. the board is expected to pass the new fee, but the mayor has hinted he'll veto. last call begins tuesday when the board of supervisors vote. in san francisco linda yee, cbs5. a serial arsonist may be at work in the sacramento area. in just the past four days there have been 20 fires set, five just last night and most have been minor, but one was set just 200 feet from a fire station. firefighters say it's a dangerous distraction for them. investigators say the five last night appear to be related based >> taxes of resources. we've got fire companies chasing these things down throughout the evening which makes them unable to respond to other emergencies if they develop. >> investigators say the five last night appear to be related based on their time and proximity, but they're not sure about the others. firefighters in southern california had their hands full overnight with a more serious fire. it burned about 10 acres and briefly threatened homes in the

yorba linda gated community. 100 firefighters were able to contain it after a few hours, but for the first time ever the firefighters got some help from water dropping helicopters flying at night. checking headlines around the bay area, the two people killed in a collision in san francisco have been identified as 19-year-old robby macomb of hercules and 20-year-old knick cevento. the car collided head on with another vehicle. three people in the second car are hospitalized with serious injuries. two animals infected with west nile virus have turned up in san mateo county. a dead squirrel was found in redwood city august 17th and a dead raven was picked up in portola valley a week later. vector control is asking people who live in those areas to call them if they find a dead animal. the family of a man killed on the streets of oakland has received a generous gift. several east bay organizations have raised $75,000 for the

week. state workers will get another chance to get the governor's furlough program tossed out this week. the state supreme court will hear arguments this week on three lawsuits challenging the governor's power to order the

workers to take unpaid days off. the governor took the step in an attempt to save the state more than a billion dollars. workers say it violates their union contracts. the court's ruling is not expected for several months. people living in richmond proposed a variety of alternatives to a proposed casino at the old point naval fuel depot. they're depot. the casino supported to be built on the waterfront site, but critics say it would be a bad idea, so richmond city planners asked the public to submit other ideas and among the submissions, a marijuana farm, college campus and nature center. . a deadly day in iraq. baghdad. this is the second deadly att pound in at least a dozen people were killed when suicide bombers took a military compound in baghdad. this is the second deadly attack on a compound in just three weeks. u.s. forces helped the iraqi soldiers fight off the

insurgents and it's the first time u.s. troops have been in a firefight since their combat mission officially ended last week. the device that could hold the key to the cause of the gulf oil spill is on its way to a nasa facility in louisiana tonight. the failure of the blow-out preventer allowed millions of barrels of oil to gush into the gulf nearly three months. what investigators hope to learn. >> reporter: rising slowly from the floor of the gulf of mexico a 1 million-pound hunk of yellow metal once attached to an oil well in the gulf. the blow-out preventer that did not live up to its name. its recovery could be the rosetta stone to the worst environmental disaster in american history. >> we want to know why it did not function the way that it was supposed to and second, we don't want this to happen again. >> reporter: this was america's first look at the complex device that could have saved 11 lives aboard the deep water horizon rig and prevented some 200 million gallons of oil from

fouling the gulf of mexico and hundreds of miles of shoreline. the blow-out preventer was supposed to slice through the drill pipe in an emergency and seal the well. it failed. >> it's possible that the wellhead assembly had two pieces of drill pipe in it rather than a single piece and the blow-out preventer wasn't able to shear through both pipes. >> reporter: lifting it out of the sea was a painstakingly slow process that took almost 30 hours. when it was complete, admiral thad allen released this statement. "the damaged blow-out preventer is now under the supervision of the deepwater horizon criminal investigation team and fbi evidence recovery team." the oil industry in the gulf is treading water since the government's moratorium on deep water drilling. a bp engineer said recovery of the blow-out preventer might change that. >> knowing that we have this stack on surface and the

investigation moving forward, be able to better get the oil industry back up and moving again. >> reporter: it will take several days for the blow-out preventer to reach land. it will be taken to a nasa facility near new orleans. results of the investigation will be of great interest to the many victims of the oil spill who have filed hundreds of lawsuits because of it. cbs news, new york. homes in victoria were flooded the flooding is a big problem tonight in australia, hundreds of homes in victoria were flooded after the rain caused rivers to run over levees and many people had to evacuate. another problem is strong wind. they uprooted trees, caused damage from falling branches. the same flooding is also causing problems in knee zealand which is still recovering from the 7.1 earthquake yesterday. >> nothing so serious for the bay area fortunately. lawrence karnow has a look at our labor day forecast. congestion. >> hey, folks, turned out to be nice around the bay area today, but going to be better

tomorrow. we'll see lots of sunshine, going to be hot in spots and you're looking for sunshine, you'll find it just about everywhere you go. in some of the interior valleys, the 80s, even some mid- 90s. inside the bay you'll find mid- 80s and low 90s into the santa clara valley and very line. up toward the coastline temperatures running in the 60s, even some mid-70s am i'll tell you, what nice weather -- 70s. i'll tell you, what some nice weather around the bay area. clear skies all around the bay area today and that meant the temperature started to warm up a bit, 90 degrees in livermore, 83 in san jose, 55 degrees in pacifica, 70 san francisco and 86 degrees in santa rosa. if you plan on traveling around the state tomorrow, you'll find heat in the central valley. there it will be in the upper 90s, in toward fresno 95 toward sacramento high country looking good, yosemite at 93 degrees, 72 lake tahoe and 97 degrees in

ukiah. we've got a trough sitting on the coastline the better part of the coastline. we finally get that ridge of high pressure which will carry some offshore winds and as they approach the coastline, they sink and start to warm up and it's going to get hot in spots of the bay area around tomorrow. looks like a great labor day, plenty of sunshine. the fun hodges not picking up on any low -- model not picking up on any low clouds and fogs. out toward the coastline the beaches are looking fantastic. we're going to crank up the temperatures even along the coastline, numbers as high as 74 degrees half moon bay, 72 degrees pacifica and inside the bay temperatures running up to the 80s, even 90s in toward morgan hill and san jose. in the east bay, some of the hotter temperatures, 96 brentwood, 95 antioch, 80s inside the bay and oakland and alameda and also in richmond, north bay looking good, plenty of sunshine all day and temperatures going to get hot

in spots, about 93 degrees in santa rosa, 89 petaluma and 92 degrees in sonoma. looking out over the next couple days, enjoy the sunshine while we have it, temperatures taking a dive tuesday and wednesday, those numbers running a good 20 to 30 degrees cooler as we head toward the middle of the week and only slight warming looking toward thursday and friday. that's a look at weather and back to you. >> thank you. a futuristic solution to traffic congestion. don't go around. go through. where traffic jams last for miles and days. not surprising with a city of 20 million people, but this bright idea called the straddle bus part bus, part train, part moving tunnel could soon solve real traffic nightmares. using a mix of solar power and electricity the bus runs on tracks that can be installed on existing roads allowing small vehicles to drive underneath. the price tag to build the space age bus is $7.4 million it holds up to 1,400 passengers. the bus can reduce 25 to 30% of traffic congestion because it does not occupy road space explains the chinese inventor. the idea is proving an international hit with urban planners from the u.s. to india, but it's beijing where the straddle bus is really gaining traction. here desperate times call for desperate measures. a 75-mile backup of cargo trucks to china's capital has

peace of its past. california woma here's another innovative idea. turn outdated aircraft into homes. a southern california woman is taking apart an ole 747 jumbo jet and -- old 747 jumbo jet and using it in the construction of her house. >> i said well, it's a really wild idea. let's go find a plane and see what that would be like to use it it as a roof and have it be a ceiling. >> so she bought the jet at a junkyard in the mojave desert for about $35,000 an architect is breaking it down piece by piece integrating into the home's design. it's going to cost about $2 million. historic bell to its place on the peninsul lost for years but now back home, how a chance sighting returned a historic cell to its place on the peninsula. and a fuzzy arrival to the san francisco zoo, why it's been so long in coming.

you know what this is. labor day weekend means burning man in the nevada desert. the annual celebration of radical self-expression attracted more than 50,000 people this year and attendance was up 25%. burning man began in 1986 at san francisco's ocean beach and it's grown into really a worldwide attraction. it begins on the sunday before labor day and reaches its climax on the following saturday with the ritual burning of its 40-foot signature effigy. well, this will be a real treat for audiences of the hill barn theater in foster city. the grace chapel bell is a bit of its history and it disappeared in 2004, but friday someone spotted the bell at a family owned scrap metal yard. the discovery came on the theater's 70th anniversary. hill barn can't wait to put it back to work. >> it used to ring to start a show and ring at the end of
