to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. new york city is gearing up for possible demonstrations after former president donald trump said he would be arrested tomorrow and encouraged his supporters to protest. trump could be indicted in connection with the manhattan grand jury's investigation into alleged hush-money paid during his 2016 campaign. jarred hill is in new york with more on this story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. we're getting some clarity from the trump legal team around where those claims of a possible arrest are coming from, and it's not from the manhattan d.a. meanwhile, we are learning that a potential testimony could come from a trump ally trying to avoid indictment altogether. sources tell cbs news that attorney robert costello, the former legal adviser to ex-trump lawyer michael cohen, could be called before a manhattan grand jury to discredit cohen's testimony today. the manhattan district attorney is investigating alleged

hush-money payments made to adult film star stormy daniels t beh his f atcrucl moment in the 2016 ca trump denies any wrongdoing. sources say cohen has been asked to be available as a rebuttal witness if needed. former president trump was seen saturday at the re championships just hours after he claimed he would be arrested in the case on tuesday and called for protests. he urged supporters to, quote, take our nation back. some prominent republicans and the former president's supporters spoke out in his defense. >> just feels like a politically arprut stucs any times have they >> reporter: company's liam team says his predictions are based on media reports and not on any communication from the manhattan district attorney's office. his calls for protests have local and federal law enforcement on alert. house speaker kevin mccarthy said any potential demonstrations should be

peaceful. >> we want calmness out there. nobody -- nobody -- violence or harm to anything else. >> reporter: manhattan district attorney alvin bragg sent an email insisting safety is the top priority and, quote, we too -- we do not tolerate attempts to intimidate our office. former president trump is also facing criminal investigations in georgia as well as d.c. related to possible attempts to try and change the results of the 2020 election. anne-marie, back to you. >> lots going on. thank you. well, miami beach is under a curfew this morning following two deadly shootings during spring break there. one man was killed yesterday in south beach. a separate shooting friday left one man dead and another seriously injured. suspects were arrested in both incidents. the curfew began just before midnight last night and runs until 6:00 a.m. officials imposed the curfew due to the shootings and excessively large and unruly crowds that

police have had trouble controlling. >> while most may come here to enjoy the amenities of miami beach, the overwhelming volume with bad intentions in the presence of guns, creates a wholly intolerable situation. >> the curfew mainly affects the south beach area. there are new evacuation orders in central california with two more storms on the way. both systems are expected to bring more rain, flooding, and mountain snow. thousands of people in tulare county, south of fresno, are under evacuation orders or warnings. some of the area is already under water after multiple levees broke. the sheriff's office and other agencies helped rescue people stranded by the high water over the weekend. len ramirez has more on the incoming storms. >> reporter: twin storms are set to batter california this week, the latest in relentless rounds of snow, rain, and high winds.

tens of thousands are struggling to dry out and dig out including lake tahoe. >> my snow tunnel to the house after some clearing work has been done. >> reporter: in southern california there's new fears of more landslides. in orange county, a rain-soaked bluff game way taking a chunk out of several properties. this pool could go next. statewide crews are repairing roads after numerous washouts and mudslides. in hard-hit pajaro, new flooding concerns after a levee failed swamping farmland. many still can't go home. >> i can't be paying rent here and then a hotel that's $200 something a day, imagine a week. >> reporter: the new storms come as yosemite is set to reopen after earlier damage shut down the park for nearly a month. california's reservoirs are filling up. the dramatic turnaround in water levels has ended years of drought for nearly half the state. california is set to break its

40-year-old snow pack record which is a critical indicator of the state's future water supplies on april 1st. len ramirez, cbs news, los angeles. chinese president xi jinping is meeting with russian president vladimir putin in moscow today. it comes after putin visited the occupied ukrainian port city of mariupol over the weekend. russia bombed, seized, and illegally annexed it last year, damaging or destroying nearly all of its buildings. putin was seen driving himself around the city touring a new playground and theater and visiting residents there. he also visited occupied crimea to mark the ninth anniversary of its annexation from ukraine. back home, new york community bank has agreed to buy a large part of failed new york-based signature bank. the federal deposit insurance corporation announced the $2.7 billion deal last night. signature bank's 40 branches will become flag star bank starting today. flag star is a subsidiary of community bank.

and senator elizabeth warren meantime is calling on an independent investigation into the failure of signature and california-based silicon valley bank. warren sent a letter to several inspectors general urging regulators to examine the management and oversight of the two collapsed banks. warren also appeared on "face the nation" as she blamed bank executives, lawmakers, and regulators including the fed. >> i don't think you build any trust at all if you don't start with why it's broken and who it is that is responsible for that. we need accountability for our regulators who clearly fell down on the job and that starts with jerome powell. >> warren said she wants preliminary results from the investigation within 30 days. and today marks 20 years since u.s. and coalition forces invaded iraq. president george w. bush described the invasion as a mission to free the iraqi people and find weapons of mass destruction.

of cancer, including an 87% higher rate of melanoma compared to the general u.s. population. another study will try to find the causes. mysterious lights over rtal identified, and north korea made a new claim today. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports north korea said it conducted a simulated nuclear attack on south korea with a ballistic missile launch over the weekend. state media released images of leader kim jong-un with his daughter overseeing the missile test in a wooded area. it was north korea's fifth missile launch this month to protest the largest joint military exercises between the u.s. and south korea in years. pyongyang said the missile flew about 500 miles and detonated as intended over the sea. the "lansing state journal" says 150 vehicles were involved in a massive pileup near portland, michigan. it happened saturday in whiteout conditions along a stretch of interstate 96. police say 16 people were taken

to hospitals. there were no serious injuries. the highs rectioor five hours. ehics we damaged while 66 others slid off the road and were not damaged. and "the sacramento bee" reports a mysterious scene in the sky over california. the lights were spotted friday night in the sacramento area, shocking people celebrating st. patrick's day. witnesses saw the lights for 40 seconds. astronomers say it was debris re-entering the atmosphere from a japanese communications package jettisoned from the space station in 2020. >> as much as we like to fantasize about ufos, alien invasions, or armageddon asteroids, the truth is a little bit more mundane. >> astronomers say the debris was about 40 miles high traveling thousands of miles per hour. still to come, a birthday

rival in hopes of calming global market fears, and subway is back with its popular footlong pass. matt pieper has those stories and more in today's cbs "money watch" report. >> reporter: while all eyes have been on the latest banking situation, wall street responded to end the week last week not liking what they were seeing. the dow lost 384 points. the nasdaq was down 86. s&p 500 losing 43. as for that bank news, switzerland's president says ubs will take over its smaller rival credit suisse for about $3.25 billion. they are two of the largest swiss banks, and it's all in an effort to avoid further market-shaking turmoil in the global banking system. comes after a plan failed for credit suisse to borrow up to $54 billion. the bbc tells staff to delete tiktok. it comes days after the uk government banned the app on government devices over fears of data being accessed by the chinese state. the u.s. and canadian governments recently made that

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ "ted lasso" and his team will be visiting the white house today. actor jason sudeikis and cost of the emmy-winning show will be joining president joe biden and the first lady for a conversation on mental health. the show has dealt with the subject. actors brett goldstein and brendan hunt are expected to attend the white house event. adam sandler accepted the mark twain prize for american humor last night. the ceremony took place at the kennedy center in washington. the award is given to comedians who make a lasting impact on american society.
