i'm anne-marie green. breaking overnight, a u.s. contractor was killed and five american service members and another contractor were hurt in a drone attack in syria. it happened at a coalition base in the northeastern part of the country. defense officials say the unmanned aerial vehicle was of iranian origin. the pentagon said two of the wounded service members were treated on site. the other three were taken to medical facilities. defense secretary lloyd austin said u.s. forces retaliated with air strikes on facilities in eastern syria used by groups affiliated with iran's revolutionary guard. back here on capitol hill, the ceo of tiktok defended the security of the app amid calls to ban the social media platform nationwide. shou zi chew testified for more than five hours yesterday in his first appearance before congress. he said the company has a responsibility to protect its 150 million users in the u.s., but lawmakers on both sides

questioned the app's safety. jarred hill is in new york with more. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. tiktok's future is not very clear. after lawmakers teamed up against the company's ceo over those concerns about the type of content that the algorithm pushes to its largely younger users and whether the chinese government has access to american user data through the app. a house pam delivered a rare bipartisan rebuke yesterday taking on tiktok's ceo, shou zi chew. >> we do not trust tiktok will ever embrace american values. >> the platform also threatens the health privacy and security of the american people. >> reporter: chew on the defensive pushed back against concerns that tiktok's chinese parent company, bite dance, could be forced to share user data with china's government. >> our commitment is to move the data into the united states, to be stored on american soil. >> has bite dance spied on americans at the direction of the chinese communist party? >> no.

>> has bite dance spied on american citizens? >> i don't think that spying is the right way to describe it. >> reporter: a poll shows a majority of americans over 30 are in favor of a tiktok ban. >> there are more than 150 million americans who love our platform. >> reporter: like holocaust survivor tova freidman who uses the platform to educate millions of viewers. >> it was a fabulous media for the holocaust, for young people. >> reporter: there's also a dark side. the nasca family's 16-year-old son committed suicide after they say he was served up disturbing videos on tiktok. >> i would just like to see mainly the stopping of promoting these types of videos. >> reporter: the white house and more than half of u.s. states have already banned the app on government devices, and congress is considering three bills that would either further restrict or outright ban tiktok in the u.s. so the biden administration has

reportedly been pushing to push owners to sell their stakes in the country or face being banned from the u.s. it's not clear that could happen without an act of congress. as tiktok tries to distance itself from beijing, leader say they would resolutely oppose a sale and maintains that beijing wouldn't and hasn't asked any company to provide intel in foreign countries. >> thank you. utah just became the first state to try to crack down on social media use. governor spencer cox signed a bill yesterday that attempts to limit a teenager's access to apps like tiktok, instagram, and facebook. under the law, companies must give parents access to their children's accounts. there's a social media curfew from 10:30 p.m. to 6:30 a.m., and there must be an age verification system for all utah residents who use social media. the law, which is expected to be challenged, is scheduled to take effect next march. armed officers are returning

to high schools in denver after a student hot two school administrators. students and parents rallied yesterday at the state capitol demanding action to make schools safer. the denver school board held an emergency meeting and approved up to two armed officers and more mental health resources in all high schools for the remainder of the school year. >> is it the fix? we do not know. we know that going back to extremes isn't a solution, but this is the right way forward. >> on wednesday, a 17-year-old student shot two school employees. one is still in serious condition, the other was released from the hospital. police found the shooter's body about 50 miles southwest of denver. there will be no decision today on whether a new york grand jury will indict former president donald trump in a hush-money investigation. the grand jury will reconvene next week since it doesn't meet on fridays. it's looking into allegations that trump falsified records to hide campaign finance violations

in connection with the 2016 payment to adult film star stormy daniels. trump has called the investigation politically motivated. and the cdc is urging people to stop using eyedrops linked to a nationwide recall. at least three people have died from a drug-resistant bacteria infection. eight others lost their vision, and four people had an eye surgically removed. manuel bojorquez has more. >> reporter: adam di sarro is a fire captain in naples, florida. for years he used artificial tears without a problem until last fall. >> the redness came on, the irritation came on. lot of itching, and it was abnormal. >> reporter: what happened to your eye? >> it just progressively got worse to the point where i couldn't even see. within a few hours. >> reporter: unable to treat it with antibiotics, doctors feared he'd lose his eye. >> that was and still is hard because i'm still not at work. going on five months.

>> reporter: the cdc is investigating a nationwide outbreak of the antibiotic-resistant bacteria which has infected 68 people in 16 states. it's warning against using ezracare or delsam artificial tears which have been recalled. >> it's a very aggressive bacteria. even with standard of care, we were not helping the patients. >> reporter: dr. guillermo amescua of the eye institute in miami treated with a light treatment like this that finally killed the infection. >> if you're using an artificial tears and notice something is not right, go see your eye care provider. >> reporter: the cdc says symptoms can include discharge, pain, redness, light sensitivity, and blurry vision. to use eyedrops safely, in general people should wash their hands and keep the tip of the bottle sterile. cbs news reached out to ezracare and amazon where di sarrow

purchased the eye drops but they had no comment. he's seeing for negligence and hopes in the meantime surgery will restore his sight. manuel bojorquez, cbs news, naples, florida. well, tensions are reaching a boiling point in france over unpopular pension reform. unions are calling for nationwide strikes and protests next week when king charles visits the country. more than one million people demonstrated across the country for nine straight days yesterday after president emmanuel macron pushed through a bill increasing the retirement age from 62 to 64. some of the demonstrations in paris turned violent as protesters clashed with police officers who were pelted with fireworks and glass bottles, used teargas and water cannons to break up large crowds. in the southern part of the country, dumpsters burned in the middle of the road. huge flames and a massive plume of smoke could be seen as traffic backed up in the area.

filed against a colorado dentist who allegedly killed his wife with poison. 45-year-old james craig is accused of putting arsenic and cyanide in protein shakes he made for her. she died on saturday. he was arrested the next day. investigators say craig used a computer at his office to conduct searches about poison. he allegedly killed his wife so he could be with a woman that he was having an affair with. the "los angeles times" says city schools will reopen today after a planned three-day strike by nonteaching support workers. the 30,000 workers walked off the job tuesday over stalled contract talks. they were joined in solidarity by teachers shutting down the nation's second largest school system. los angeles mayor karen bass stepped in wednesday to mediate the ongoing dispute. >> she recognizes that this is an issue that is affecting the entire city, and so she came forward and we believe that with her leadership we can bring the
