a driverless car vandalized and set on fire on the first day of the lunar new year. how san francisco's mayor is responding today. plus, despite a soul-crushing super bowl loss the faithful show up to lift spirits as the 49ers return to the bay area. >> it is okay. it's okay. we are here to say thank you very much. this is cbs news bay area with juliette goodrich. >> good evening, tonight we begin with the story of a bay area doctor who is risking his own life helping to save others half a world away. he got on a plane today and heading to the war zone in gaza. the driving force beheund the mission as he leaves behind his wife and two young children. >> these are the final moments for this family before he embarked on an uncertain and

dangerous five week medical mission to gaza. >> if i am not going to do it who is going to do it. >> reporter: he came to the u.s. as a palestinian refugee when he was seven years old. stanford-educated emergency room doctor offering medical aid in the evergrowing humanitarian crisis. >> the heart really hurts right now. and i am hoping me going there and being able to help out is a way to at least alleviate some of the hurt or feel like i am doing something. >> reporter: this saratoga resident volunteered for missions before. there have been more than 300 attacks on health care facilities in gaza since the start of the war. this will be his first one to gaza. >> not afraid of death. i am more concerned about my journey in this life, you know, held to account by the end of the day and saying i give it 100%. >> it is like he is nervous

about it because he might like, you know, get hurt or not come back. but, the community is honored because he gets to go. >> reporter: his mother is embracing the life lesson that he is giving his children. >> as a family this value is very important to us. just for ourselves and our own family we are a part of humanity. >> the tragedy that we are witnessing in front of our eyes. they need all of help they deserve. he offered his help, it makes me proud. >> seeing babies pulled out of rubble. bodies torn into pieces. a heart that is hurting is a heart that is is alive. i hope everybody is awake and alive. and, awake to the

rafah. this video released by the defense forces shows two hostages flown to safety where they were reunited with their families. today, president biden also met with king abdullah, the second of jordan to talk about options for ceasefire plans. during a joint statement the two leaders warped israel against carrying out any military operations in rafah on the ground without having a credible plan to ensure the safety of the more than one million palestinians who live there. back here in the bay area. the police made a tragic discovery inside of a home. they say four people were found dead while responding to a welfare check. our chopper was over the scene earlier today. you can see a large police presence around this home. this is on alameda near 41st avenue, the police say when they entered they discovered a man, a woman, two boys inside, dead. different agencies are helping officers investigate around the home. the police say no one

heard from the family in awhile. when the officers arrived to the home they did not notice forced entry. right now, the street around 41st and 42nd avenues remain closed off for investigation. one neighbor, who has lived there for 27 years, tells us he is shocked since it is a quiet and calm neighborhood. >> i don't know the circumstances here. when you hear it is an entire family, mother, father, two minor children, your mind goes to a place of what tragic event happened. >> i think this is a horrible and tragic call not many people get calls like this and have to respond to this. so, this is not a normal call for anyone. >> the police say it is an isolated incident and no danger to the public. they say they are still trying to identify the victims and also say it is unclear if they are related. in san francisco, mayor

breed weighing in after a waymo robo taxi was set on fire on the first day of the lunar new year. the video posted to x. sos flames and smoke coming from the car on jackson and stockton on saturday night. waymo tells us it started when a group of people surrounded the car, broke its window and threw a firecracker inside. the smoke is still pouring out of the cab while firefighters put out the flames. graffiti on the side and the entire top of the car is gone. there were no passengers inside at the time and no one hurt. no arrests were made. today, mayor london breed released a statement addressing the incident saying quote we are a city that is home to exciting, emerging technologies like these vehicles that are changing the world, we are a city that is rich in culture, ideas and pride. we are not defined by a small isolated incident by a reckless few. all right, now, to the

gut-wrenching loss in las vegas that many of us are still processing as we speak. the 49ers are back in the pay area, home sweet home after losing to overtime against the chiefs in super bowl lviii. the team landed this afternoon and a handful of faithfuls were there to greet them despite the loss. >> honestly i had tears. i was crying. seeing a lot of fans crying. >> it is okay. it's okay. we are here to say thank you very much to them.. >> yes we are. win or lose the fans are still faithful. vern glenn and i just got back from las vegas. he is joining me now. >> are we? >> i took a nap [ laughter ] i was out. now i am back with more energy. we are here to talk about the game and some thoughts on this. >> you know, something, jules, it is all about 2024 now. we have to move on. all 32 teams have a record of 0-0. now, we will get a reminder when the

for fuel sending flames up in a canopy. >> our biggest concern is on a wind day we get a fire within that grove and eucalyptus trees can create embers that go up in the air and go miles downwind. >> marin county will remove the trees within a 150 acre area that are 10 inches in diameter or less and cleaning out the area underneath. all right, let's take you to dramatic video of a landslide in dana point. two homes very near the edge after a portion of cliff side gave way over the weekend. but, the city officials say the deck that you see there perched over the ocean has not moved and an inspection of the residence was done and no cracks were found. so, currently the city confirmed there is no imminent threat to the home. >> the city agrees that there

is no major structural issue right now with the house. so, it will not get red tagged. >> okay. all eyes will be on this bluff as the forecast is calling for more rain to come as early as this weekend. all right, speaking of rain. let's go to paul heggen. he says we will see a lot of it >> the first storm system will bring light to moderate rain. heading towards midweek. we are looking at a wet holiday president's weekend forecast. what you need to know overall heading through the workweek. one day down already. we will see areas of dense fog developing late tonight into the morning, more clouds than sunshine over head tomorrow. some sun filtering through, warming the temperatures up for what is normal. rain returns on wednesday. unsettled on thursday. it will be a nonimpactful storm system sending light to moderate rain across the bay area. then, just generally wet for the holiday weekend. that rain is not going to be widespread but it will be quite a bit heavier saturday,

sunday, into monday. different perspective as we look over downtown san francisco and you can see the animation over salesforce tower, chased down by the dragon. temperatures in the lower 50s. across the board. those numbers will continue to drop off. lower to middle 40s by the morning, the chilliest spots hanging around 40 degrees. middle of february, this is just fine, we can handle this. the temperatures tomorrow, warming up to what is normal for the middle of february. the day before valentine's day. temperatures in the 40s. one of the warm spots around the bay area antioch getting up to 63 degrees. most of the temperatures within a degree or two on either side of 60. cooler than that for halftime bay, 57. but close. coolest spots and warmest spots inland. not much of a difference. even when the rain chances return not much of a change to the temperatures over the course of the next several days. let's

talk about the rain chances returning, first, clouds over head. those will continue to thicken tonight and throughout the day tomorrow. still, sunshine, glimmering through once the dense fog burns off. all of the moisture hanging off of the coast throughout the day tomorrow. some of that will sneak through the north bay tomorrow evening. just a chance for a couple showers late tomorrow night. the bulk of the rain will hold off until wednesday afternoon and evening. light to moderate rain showers, yellow indicating heavier rainfall rates. that will not last too long in any one spot. the batch of rain will move through already by midnight on wednesday night. we will see lingering showers possible on thursday. those are going to be pretty few and far between. more mist than hit. i would plan to keep the umbrella and the rain jacket handy. adding up just the first wave of rain, future cast indicating less than a quarter of an inch of rain. now, squeezing out 1 1/2 inches of rain in the higher elevations around. for

the most part, most of the northern part of the bay area with lesser amounts farther to the south. the rain shadowed impact is evident on the numbers that you see on the map. san jose picking up a quarter of an inch of the next system. up from when the previous model runs were saying, of course, not done for the rain chances at that point, better, long-lived system, a series of systems will be moving in over presidents' day weekend. not just saturday, sunday, but for the holiday itself on monday. wet conditions anticipated. outdoor plans, stuff you wanted to get done over the holiday weekend? i would rethink the plans including travel plans for the sierra. they will get quite a bit of snow. adding up the rain, the rain shadowed spot, an inch and a half and more than that in rainfall. 2-3 inches of rain for a widespread basis and north bay and the santa cruz mountains we are talking about several inches of rain. a couple different atmospheric rivers will direct the moisture towards us. they

say they top out at ar-1 or 2 on the scale. when they happen back to back and we saw it a week ago, everything gets slid on the system and the weak systems could have impact of something that is higher up on the atmospheric river scale. we will track it over the next several days the good news s they will not have nearly the kind of wind impact that the one that came back through sunday had for the bay area. active seven-day forecast. dry weather, rain chances return on wednesday. lingering showers on thursday. mostly dry weather for the end of workweek on friday. then, get into a multiday stretch. saturday, sunday, monday, the details, the back half of the forecast, allusive, narrowing them down for the rest of the week. >> i know you will narrow it down, paul, thank you. the california crack down on plastic bags seems to - [narrator] at kpix, we're taking weather to the next level. - we can show not just what's happening at ground level,
