people. the bay area school board meeting forced into recess as parents and teachers demand a say in what may be coming to their district. >> so close, so close. plus, for some people the best way to celebrate love is with a fight. >> from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. hello, i'm sara donchey. it was a soggy valentine's day for a lot of us here in the bay area. hopefully you had the cards safelily tucked away. is the rain done with us yet? >> not quite yet for this system. there is a lot more headed our way as we are headed into presidents' day weekend. we will get to that in a moment. let's talk about the current rainfall, adding up across the bay area. we have seen anywhere from a little bit in the rain shadowed spots, a couch inches in the higher elevation spots. you can see

the heaviest rain moved off to the east. pockets of steadier rain, including patches of slightly heavier downpours around santa rosa and sonoma county and napa county and heavier downpours. another batch of something more wide preed heavier rain falling through the county, making its way towards concord and walnut creek and advancing over into eastern county. showers, including heavier rain including higher elevations, but then things taper off in a moment for the santa cruz mountains, you had the greatest rainfall amount so far. you have much more on the way heading through presidents' day weekend. the showers are becoming more and quieting down heading into early tomorrow morning. there might be a couple left over sprinkles, pop up showers heading through the day on thursday. they are going to be few and far between. really, the umbrella is optional heading out the door

early on thursday. but, we are in for more rain. let's talk about why back to back atmospheric rivers. the first system off of the coast, close enough to direct the first one into the bay area on saturday. very brief break in the action before the next storm system wrecks the next atmospheric river towards more of california by sunday night. going into monday and this system might get stuck off of the coast with lingering rain. adding up all of the rain in the full forecast in a few minutes >> all right, paul, thank you. this is what kansas city chiefs fans were supposed to be doing all day today. [ cheers and applause ] [music] [ band playing] >> and for awhile, they were, until their super bowl victory rally took a dark turn. one person was killed, 22 people were hurt, eight of them children. when someone started shooting in the crowd. the victim who died was a popular radio dj and mother of two.

tonight, we know that three people were taken into custody. the police are questioning them about the moment everything went wrong. >> reporter: the crowd turned into a tearful scramble so fast that even the people in the middle of it needed a moment. >> i heard a pop. then, you just heard screaming and everybody in front of me just started running and i, and i, i started yelling what is going on, what is going on. a woman yelled, they are shooting, they're shooting. [sound of gunfire] [ screaming ] . >> a local news crew between live shots was caught in a minute of confusion >> guys, guys, guys, guys, guys. >> reporter: what may be a sewn of the times, even the spectators who were not shoot were shooting knew what to do. >> all of a sudden people started crushing forward. everybody started running, there was screaming, we did not know what was happening but this day in age when people run

you run. >> reporter: shots fired in the heart of downtown while a million people were gathered. >> something happened, definitely, 100%. >> reporter: including kansas city chiefs players, governors of missouri and kansas and more than 800 officers, dozens of them stream towards the sound of gunfire. >> i was telling everything, get down, get down, officers were coming down. >> the players at the center of what should have been a joyful day reacted with sorrow on line. including patrick mahomes and travis kelce who posted their feelings to x. >> parades, rallies, schools, movies, it seems almost nothing is safe. >> reporter: in southern california another potential mass shooting may have been avoid. the police arrested an 18-year-old who was planning shoot up his school. officers say he was obsessed with the columbine shooting and planned to try something similar on its

25 year anniversary in april. another student tipped them off on the plans, they found seven rifles, two revolvers, a handgun and shotgun. they seized over 1,000 rounds of ammunition. back here in the pay area, santa rosa police say they arrested a 14-year-old boy who was printing guns. the police say the teen is a student at montgomery high school. they searched his home while he was in class and found a 3d printer, gun parts and ammunition. they arrested the student on campus. the santa rosa city school district has been dealing with violence on campuses, a string of students have been arrested over weapon charges, and multiple fights on and off campus. now, to pacifica. parents and teachers are rallying against a plan to slash 2,000 jobs in the school district including counselors and psychiatrists. the meeting got so heated they had to go to

recess. >> we have another items, we have at least 20 more people to talk. >> we are just trying to be fair to the other speakers. the board is going to take a 10 minute recess. . >> they did eventually get their chance to speak. >> the whole child matters not just how well they can read, not just how well they can write. as their teacher i am not going to be good. you will have me burnt out and leaving this district because i can not do six jobs at once and take care of my own babies at home. it is not fair. find the money. >> i don't buy it. that is what i say. i think that this is not a necessary evil. i think that there can be cuts top down. i think that the

community tonight at this meeting, people were standing out in the rain chanting, do your job. >> the meeting is still going on the board has not made a decision just yet. all right, noyou to a little good news out of oakland. the a's made history this week hiring a woman to be their primary play-by-play announcer. spring training still over a week away. andrea nakano shows uses that did not stop jenny from popping in the booth to call tonight's warriors game on the radio. >> ginny cavanar can do it all. her main gig is calling a's games she called college games, she hit it out of the park in her bay area debut and leads the way for other women to follow her lead. >> to jenny cavanar who will be the first primary play-by-play announcer. >> reporter: she has come a long way since taking a sports reporter job in san diego. a

[beep] >> two guys started duking it out about an hour into their southwest flight to hawaii on monday. passengers and a flight attendant had to pull them apart. someone claiming to be the man's son has been saying that the passenger taking those punches was drunk but hassling his mom. that is when he says his dad stepped in. >> i understand if he was defending his wife. that is a human quality. but, you know, we have to be adults. >> they were detained when the plane landed in hawaii. this ambulance was too well positioned to respond to this crash t. had to swerve out of the path of a car that rolled across a massachusetts freeway during the big nor'easter. the 17-year-old driver was not badly hurt and there was the

car and was more concerned about what his parents might say to him. back here in the bay, about to get a break in the rain. paul, short-lived before the main event? >> the main event is a double-barreled main event. back to back atmospheric rivers heading into presidents' day weekend. more in the area right now. one inch exactly of rainfall in the santa cruz mountains, that is the high end for pretty much everybody else more modest amounts. half an inch for san rafael. doneville and san francisco. 2/10th of an inch, just a good wetting rainfall. but, wetting rainfall is not what we need when we have the prospect of heavy rain just over the horizon. i want to give you the overall perspective on where the rain is going and just a few more showers lining up, it will not line down until we get into the preshowers in the morning. a chance of a pop up shower. i

would not worry about it. right now, temperatures in the lower to middle 50s. blanket of cloud cover, insulating the ground, keeping the temperatures from dropping. only going to fall a few degrees, as the rain comes to an end we will see locally dense fog to start the day. once it dissipates we will see the clouds and sunshine. the temperatures running a couple degrees above average, middle 60s in san jose, that is the warm spot. otherwise, we are talking lower to middle 60s for high temperatures, we are supposed to be around or barely above 60 degrees here on valentine's day. just barely short of 60, right at 60 degrees in san francisco, the temperatures in the north bay, also reaching the lower to middle 60s. adding a degree or two on to the temperatures for friday's highs, friday, the last dry day that we are

tracking for awhile. the rain will return, shifting it to back to back storm systems heading our way. going through it. future cast, still dry at that point. showers hitting the coast late friday night into early saturday. light to moderate rain saturday morning, gives way to moderate to heavy rainfall. midday, through the afternoon, evening, this is snow for the high sierra. this system, it is going to kind of lose its energy heading into saturday night. so, just a few off and on showers heading into early sunday morning, but, of course, the next one, it will be moving in. that is part of the problem here. the first one, it is potentially enough to cause localized flooding. marginal to slight risk of excessive rainfall. that is the terminology that the weather prediction center uses, assessing the risk of any flash flooding to occur. especially in urban areas where it does not absorb much of the new rainfall. but we are seeing this kind of threat out of first atmospheric river there is another one that looms, it

likely will last longer. both on the low end. the fact that they are happen sog close together, picture it taking those two and pushing them up, total. that is the system that the back to back systems will have. ar-3 or an ar-4 on our 1-5 scale. the tail on this one is longer. it looks like the rain will linger into tuesday. lingering showers into wednesday. the seven-day rainfall outlook from the weather prediction center shows in the rain shadowed spots, closes to two inches of total rain. coming at us in a couple ways, that is a lot of water. widespread basis, 2-4 inches of rainfall with more than that for some of the higher elevations in the north bay and especially in the santa cruz mountains, forecasting seven inches of additional rain around. that is a lot of rain, not only the flash flooding is right but plain stem river flooding is a concern as the rainfall makes its way through the various watersheds. it is a

busy-looking seven-day forecast. the next couple of days that is the calm part of the forecast. enjoy the break while it lasts, get outdoor stuff done. check the storm drains in your neighborhood as well. off and on showers, giving way to heavier rain late in the day. not as much wind energy associated with the next atmospheric rivers, that is the good news, power outages is the likely scenario. close to the million plus without power with the last bit of the rivers, we will keep you here and updated. vern? >> ahead, all about the warriors tonight. this streak complements of veterans? and the young guns, santa clara representing
