term, president biden delivers a raucous "state of the union" address taking on donald trump without ever mentioning his name. his predecessor's reaction as the presidential rematch kicks into high gear. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. president biden delivered a fiery "state of the union" address before a divided congress and the american public less than eight months before november's general election. the president touted his administration's accomplishments and drew a stark contrast to his likely 2024 gop rival, touching on a slew of topics from the threat to our democracy to the israel-hamas war to immigration, the economy, taxes, and women's reproductive health. cbs' willie james inman joins us from capitol hill with reaction. good morning. >> reporter: hey there, good early morning to you. no topic shortage indeed last night during the president's "state of the union" address where he laid out those

priorities for the nation ahead of what will likely be a contentious election battle. >> mr. speaker, the president of the united states. [ cheers ] >> reporter: president biden came out swinging in an election year "state of the union" address hitting many of the key issues on voters' minds like his age. >> the issue facing our nation isn't how old we are, it's how old are ideas. >> reporter: reproductive rights -- >> i'll restore roe v. wade as the law of the land again. >> reporter: the economy and immigration -- >> we need to act now. >> reporter: the president sometimes sparred with republican lawmakers like this response to congresswoman marjorie taylor greene over the killing of a young georgia woman allegedly by a suspect who illegally entered the u.s. from venezuela. >> lincoln riley, an innocent young woman who was killed by an illegal. >> reporter: the president also took on his likely 2024 gop rival, former president donald trump, referring to him as my

predecessor 13 times. >> what's happened now is a horror show. >> reporter: trump slammed the address on social media calling it, quote, an angry, polarizing, and hate-filled speech. while alabama senator katie britt delivered the official gop response with her kitchen as the backdrop. >> president biden just doesn't get it. >> reporter: on foreign policy, biden vowed to stand up to russian president vladimir putin. as pro-palestinian protesters stood outside the capitol, inside the president announced plans to build a temporary port to get more humanitarian aid into gaza, and he plans to bring israeli hostages taken by hamas home. later today president biden heads to philadelphia, your city there, anne-marie, for a campaign event. over the weekend he will visit the atlanta area. these are two battleground states that were pivotal to president biden's win in 2020, and he's seeking to bring his message directly to the american people. anne-marie?

>> all right. thanks for the warning. that means traffic's going to be a nightmare in philly today. willie james inman, thank you so much. as willie mentioned, president biden addressed the worsening humanitarian crisis in gaza calling on israel to help get desperately needed aid into the war-torn region. the u.s. military along with other countries carried out another round of airdrops yesterday sending thousands of meals parachuting into gaza. meanwhile, as israel marked five months since the october 7th massacre, it's looking more unlikely there will be any sort of cease-fire and hostage release before the start of ramadan this weekend. hamas says its delegation left cairo yesterday and talks would resume next week. egyptian officials said earlier that negotiations reached an impasse over hamas' demand for a phased process resulting in an end to the war. during last night's "state of the union" address, president biden welcomed sweden as the newest member of nato. the country's prime minister received a round of applause

when he was introduced by the president. earlier the prime minister and secretary of state antony blinken took part in a ceremony at the state department. sweden became the 32nd member of the alliance ending decades of post-world war ii neutrality. just three months after being expelled from congress former republican representative george santos says he's running again. santos, who still retains floor privileges, showed up at the "state of the union" address. it was during a speech that santos announced on x that he'll run against sitting new york republican congressman nick lalota. now santos was expelled from congress after being charged with multiple counts of fraud and stealing from donors. severe storms threaten more than 20 million people across the south today and tomorrow. we could possibly see tornadoes, large hail, and flooding. the storms will first move through parts of eastern texas larks la, and mississippi today. they will push east arriving in alabama and georgia later this

afternoon. saturday a risk of severe storms extends in florida, from the florida panhandle, rather, to the carolinas. the chance of flooding will be highest in parts of the georgia and alabama where six inches of rain will be possible through saturday. an active duty army soldier and intelligence analyst is set to make his first court appearance today on charges of selling sensitive military documents to china. sergeant korbein schultz allegedly received more than $40,000 for information about weapons and missile defense systems, as well as the u.s. defense of taiwan. he's accused of using his top-secret security clearance to download classified u.s. government records. congress is one step closer to offering tiktok a life-changing choice. a house committee advanced a bill that would require tiktok to divest from its parent company or face being banned. cbs' jarred hill joins us with the latest on that. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. you know, the committee here

saying that this is a national security priority. but some other house members, tiktok itself, and a lot of users who actually called their member of congress to complain about the bill argue that a possible ban infringes on their free speech. this morning on capitol hill, tiktok's time could be running out. >> the bill's adopted. >> reporter: thursday republicans and democrats on the house energy and commerce committee pushed along a bill to give tiktok nearly six months to either sever ties with its china-based owner, bytedance, or be banned from u.s. app stores. >> the laws in china allow the chinese communist party to compel companies like tiktok to share data with them whether the companies want to or not. >> the basic ownership structure has to change. that's the message we've heard from every single national security official in the biden administration right now. >> reporter: yesterday tiktok had a message of its own -- mobilizing some of its nearly 170 million users to call their member of congress to object to

the legislation. a tiktok spokesman told cbs news only users over 18 were asked to call. >> you have to put in your zip code so that tiktok can tell you which representative you should call. imagine when china wants to use it more nefariously. imagine when they want to engage in psychological warfare against the american people. >> reporter: tiktok argues the bill would trample first amendment rights of american users. legal analysts say that's not quite clear. >>the government is not required to say that when it comes to all of these different private companies and platforms that they have to be allowed to operate. >> reporter: as the biden campaign builds out its tiktok presence, the biden white house signals it's behind the new bill. well, the full house is expected to vote on this actually next week. really pushing this thing forward as quickly as possible. >> all right, we'll see how it unfolds. thank you very much. >> reporter: no problem.

there's something going around the gordon home. good thing gertrude found delsym. now what's going around is 12-hour cough relief. and the giggles. the family that takes delsym together, feels better together. a united airlines plane had to make an emergency landing after it lost a tire just seconds after taking off in san francisco. video shows the tire coming off the boeing 777, bound for japan with 249 people on board yesterday. the plane was diverted to los angeles where it landed safely. the tire smashed into an empty car in a parking lot at the san francisco airport, though. on a different united flight monday, a boeing 737's engine caught fire after bubble wrap was sucked into the engine. the father of a school shooter goes on trial, and there was anger in uvalde. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand."

the "san antonio express-news" says a new investigation placed no blame on the uvalde, texas, police department for the bungled response to the 2022 elementary school shooting that killed 19 students and two teachers. former detective jesse prado led the independent investigation ordered by the city. during a city council meeting yesterday attended by victims' families, he said there were many failures on the part of police but no violations of policy by local officers. he said they acted in good faith. parents were outraged. >> you call that good faith? they stood there 77 minutes. >> my daughter was left for dead. these police officers signed up to do a job. they didn't do it. >> hundreds of heavily armed local, state, and federal officers waited more than an hour before confronting the teenaged shooter. the "detroit free press" reports on the first day of testimony in the involuntary

manslaughter trial of a father whose teenage son killed four students at a michigan high school. james crumbley is accused of failing to secure a gun used by ethan crumbley in the 2021 shooting and ignoring his son's mental health issues. yesterday jurors listened to a frantic 911 call made by james crumbley on the day of the sooting. he said that there was a missing gun in -- at his house and he thought his son took it. crumbley's wife was convicted on the same involuntary manslaughter charges last month. and "the texas tribune" says excel energy acknowledged that its equipment appears to have ignited the largest wildfire in the state's history. officials say power lines started the smokehouse creek fire which has burned more than one million acres, killed at least two, and destroyed hundreds of structures. homeowners filed a lawsuit last week accusing the company of not maintaining its power lines. but excel energy denies it was negligent in maintaining and operating its equipment. still will to come, an exotic sight on the vegas strip. the bellagio hotel welcomes a

>> reporter: wall street charged ahead on thursday with some record high gains as federal reserve chair jerome powell finished two days of testimony on capitol hill reaffirming interest rate cuts are coming this year. the dow climbed 130 points. the nasdaq soared by 241 points. and the s&p 500 gained 52 to hit a record high. out of an abundance of caution sargento cheese is recalling products sold in 15 states due to concerns of potential contamination. the cheese comes from the california dairy company or rizzo lopez foods that was involved in a listeria outbreak earlier this year. it sent nearly two dozen people to the hospital. the discount grocery store chain aldi has plans to add 800 new stores across the u.s. over the next five years. the expansion looks to capitalize on cost-conscious americans feeling the pinch at grocery stores. the german-owned chain plans to open hundreds of stores in the northeast and midwest while converting many existing wynn

dixies and harvey's supermarkets in the south into aldis. "forbes" has released its list of highest paid action torts last year and adam sandler tops the list with $73 million thanks to his movie-making production company happy madison productions. margot robbie takes the second spot with $59 million followed by tom cruise with $45 million. that's your cbs "money watch" report for this friday morning. i'm carissa lawson, cbs news, new york. the bellagio hotel in las vegas on the strip welcomed a very rare guest. a rare yellow billed loon decided to take up residency in the hotel's waters forcing the hotel to shut off its famous fountains. the nevada department of wildlife was called in to remove and relocate the bird. the yellow billed loon is considered one of the ten rarest birds that regularly breeds in the u.s., according to the national parks service. up next, making waves.

longtime singer and entertainer steve lawrence has died. a family spokesperson said he died yesterday of complications due to alzheimer's disease. lawrence along with his late wife eydie gorme were known for their appearances on talk shows, tv specials, nightclubs, and performances in las vegas. lawrence also acted in television shows and movies. steve lawrence was 88 years old. a social media star-turned-boxer james paul has -- jake paul has announced his latest bout. the 27-year-old paul will take on former heavyweight champ mike tyson 30 years his senior. the fight will take place in july in texas and will be live streamed on netflix. tyson, who will be 58 when the fight happens, has not fought a professional -- at the professional level since 2005. and the fight over a controversial call during a new jersey high school basketball game moves from the hardwood to the courtroom.

the manasaquan team filed a lawsuit to try and stop the championship game from taking place tomorrow as they appeal the buzzer beater call that cost them a spot. a judge ruled against them yesterday, and now they are awaiting a decision from the state education commissioner. and a 29-year-old new yorker just became the first american woman to sail solo nonstop around the world. cole brauer arrived in spain yesterday completing one of the most extreme and difficult sporting events on earth -- the global solo challenge. fewer than 200 people have ever managed to finish the more than 30,000-mile journey. we'll be right back.
