[cheers and applause]
1:38 am
the whole thing took place in like ten seconds. i was screaming and honking. >> smash and grab thieves aren't even bothering to wait anymore for you to get out of your car. plus a postal worker just trying to deliver the mail gets a gun pulled on her in return. and why vice president kamala harris is about to team up with a very different joe. from kpix, this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> good evening. i'm juliette
1:39 am
goodrich in for sara tonight. it's something that a lot of us do, sit in our cars in a driveway or parking lot, we might be on our phones or waiting for someone, but tonight oakland police say that is exactly what smash and grab thieves are hoping you'll do. our andrea nakano spoke with one woman with who says just weeks after her car was stolen a thief followed her all the way to her driveway in her replacement ride. oakland police say they have seen an increase in smash and grabs, specifically targeting parked cars with a driver still inside. one oakland woman we talked to says the thieves were quick and precise with how they carried out their crimes. aria has lived in the highland park neighborhood all her life. she's always felt safe until she became a victim of a car theft and smash and grab all within a month. she wanted to talk to us about how the
1:40 am
robbery unfolded. she said the thieves spotted her on east 14th street and followed her home. >> they slammed their brakes and they also turned left with me and i thought it was a little strange, but i wasn't trying to think of the worst of everyone, you know. so i was like oh, maybe they just missed their turn. that's normal. >> reporter: but as she made another left, so did the black sedan following her. this is video of when she pulled up on her driveway. the black car slows down behind her. the robber gets out of the car and smashes the passenger side window. >> and the whole thing took place in like ten seconds and so i was screaming. i was honking like everything and i think i scared them away when i started honking because he looked startled and he like jumped away and left in the getaway car. >> they took off with her purse, but luckily she wasn't injured. aria immediately called police. >> it took me a while to even get through the calling system and when they did, they said they had 200 pending calls ahead of me, but they did receive a lot of reports of the
1:41 am
same suspects already. >> aria has replayed the events over and over again in her mind. her one regret is being too trusting of others. >> be more aware of your surroundings. trust no one, you know. you might want to see the good in people, but right now i don't think you should. just run away. trust your gut. >> opd says it's investigating these crimes and have sent additional officers to the areas that experienced these robberies. this video is from another incident san antonio park. you can hear the victim yelling at the robber to get out, but he comes around to the driver's side to smash the window. aria says she just does not feel safe in oakland anymore. >> i haven't left at all by myself since that happened and so i'm just waiting to fix my whole car situation, get everything settled with insurance and i'm going to dip. i already told my parents i got to go. i really don't
1:42 am
feel safe. >> police say robberies are up 32% compared to this time last year. they say bottom line, you think you're being followed, don't go home. head to the police station or a local fire station instead. also in oakland, the postal service says one of their mail carriers was just trying to do her job when someone pulled a gun on her. >> no. i don't want to. >> it's hard to listen to. it happened on march 2nd along euclid avenue near van buren. a post al spokesperson told us the worker fortunately was not hurt, but the robber got away with her keys to city collection boxes. here's a picture of that suspect. the postal service is offering a $150,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction. we've covered similar robberies across the bay area for years now. a usps spokesperson tells us crooks
1:43 am
are after their collection box keys to steal mail in bulk and it's actually happening all over the country, but he said there is a way we all can help. >> certainly if you see somebody driving, following a carrier around, we see that happen a lot. when we get the videos after the robbery, we look back and see that person followed the carrier for a couple stops in their car. so if a resident sees that, warn the carrier. that's been helpful in a couple cases where a person leaned out their door and said hey, there's somebody after you. >> see something, say something. lawmakers in washington are working on a bill that would create new protections for postal workers and harsher penalties for people who attack them. on to the wind, it's picking up tonight. we are in store for some blustery days. palm, paul, what can you tell us? >> you might think what wind? closer to sea level the current wind gusts are barely over 10 miles an hour, but the wind is gusting at higher elevations,
1:44 am
50 plus-mile-an-hour gusts on top of mount st. helena and blackhawk in the east bay over 30 miles an hour. the wind will come down in elevation as we head through the night. the hour-by-hour wind gusts at sea level will hover around 30 miles an hour through most of the daylight hours thursday. you go up in elevation, those wind gusts could potentially get over 50 miles an hour. we have a wind advisory in effect for most of the bay area through 11:00 a.m. friday, but the strongest winds will be tomorrow and tomorrow night. be prepared for minor tree damage, sporadic power outages. this is more inconvenient as impactful type of first alert, but we're going to keep an eye on the wind gusts the next couple days. the fire threat should remain low and the wind will die down in time for what looks like a fantastic weekend. that's coming up in the full forecast. >> thank you. when it comes to politics, can't we all just get along? maybe not this year, but what if this happens? >> you have an interest in politics? >> i have an interest in
1:45 am
leveraging every part of my influence for good. straight ahead in sports, drama in a cal-stanford game. have you heard that before? 40 minutes of regulation not enough. the warriors brought the defense. it was the offense late in the game deep in the heart of texas. plus a training exercise goes about as badly as it can for a s.w.a.t. team and bomb squad in southern california. meanwhile vice president kamala harris is about to team up with a very different joe, the message they're hoping to send. and how have you reacted to the time change this week? probably not as badly as donuts, the dog. we'll explain.
1:46 am
1:47 am
1:48 am
vern joining me now. we've seen warriors star steph curry shine up and down the court, nothing new. >> all kinds of situations. >> what about seeing him in the white house? because he sat down this morning or over the
1:49 am
weekend with "cbs this morning," and hinted at a future of politics and maybe even the presidency. >> you have an interest in politics? >> i have an interest in leveraging every part of my influence for good in the way that i can. so if that's the way to do it, then i won't say the presidency, but if politics is a way that you can create meaningful change or if there's another way outside of politics that we can do. >> you're not ruling it out? >> no. >> he said it. he's not ruling it out. >> he's been to the white house. >> yeah. when they won. >> barack obama is a regular golf partner. so he's kind of familiar with it and if he does go to the white house, you know what's going to be on the grounds? an open basketball court. >> then he'll have the three-point plan for his presidency. >> why not? >> i see it. >> all time three-point shooter, why not? >> he writes children's books. he's a superstar, role model, presidency's next. >> problem is he tries to make everybody happy and you know
1:50 am
how that is. that's the kind of job where not everybody's happy. >> not everybody's happy. not everybody was happy about tonight's game, jules, because curry wasn't playing and two missing starters tonight in curry and draymond green who found himself on the injury report. at the dallas mavericks it was like having hands tied behind their backs. how to get a technical foul, i'll show you. chris paul, okay, said the magic words to the ref. paul got teed up and then the vet teed him back. pick it up in the fourth quarter, it got away from the dubs after they cut the lead to four. watch how this turnover ended. kyrie irving lobbed to josh green. irving had ten assists. next possession irving, grown man move on trayce jackson-davis. irving golden state has now lost four of its last six.
1:51 am
shout out, game ball to jonathan kuminga, the 21-year-old continuing to attack the rim. look at this. no fear at all. kuminga scored 27. they weren't cheapies either. he also hit 9 of 10 at the free throw line and played more minutes than anybody tonight, 35. let's look at the western conference standings. warriors still entrenched in the tenth spot. they would like to get up to six, but that's four games to make up and a lot of teams to leapfrog with just 17 regular season games left. men's college basketball, i give you the last pac-12 basketball game between cal and stanford. this one went to overtime. cal brought in bears great marshawn lynch to fire up the fellows. conference tournament in las vegas and when the going was good for cal, this was it. jalen celestine, second half shot putting the bears up 18 points, but stanford put the pressure, on climbed back and michael jones tied the game at the end
1:52 am
of regulation, a 24-6 run. wow! and it was all stanford in the extra period. rayno scoring 18, added 13 rebounds. cardinal advance with an 87-76 come backer. the end of an era, no more cal-stanford pac-12 battles. >> right. >> next time they meet they'll be in a different conference. >> yeah. that was the last of the last. >> the last of the last. that was it for basketball. >> vern, thank you. this pizza shop owner deserves hazard pay. at least he has the video to prove it and why he's missing his eyebrows. we'll explain. speaking of getting grilled, the eagles landed in a very i would say in elegant place. don't worry. he's okay, paul. beautiful sunset over the bay area today, warm temperatures. the breeze didn't really kick in until
1:53 am
after the sun went down. for most of us at sea level, it's not too windy yet. that changes thursday. we've got hour-by-hour wind gusts coming up in the first alert forecast.

16 members of the orange county sheriff's department are recovering tonight after an explosion during a training exercise sent them all to the hospital. it happened at this facility in irvine. members of the s.w.a.t. team and bomb squad were in one of those training rooms when a device exploded. luckily, they were all in tactical gear with medics standing by. >> it's not a good feeling anytime an injury happens to anybody, including members of our own staff. the device was part of the training as far as what they were doing when it happened. that i don't know. >> tonight we've learned one deputy has a leg injury, another that hurt his back. the rest were treated for dizziness and ringing in their ears. the owner of this texas pizza shop certainly lucky to walk away from this mishap relatively unscathed. a fireball burst out of his oven
1:57 am
and sent him flying when he lit the pilot light, a gas bubble apparently the culprit. the owner said he felt like he was on fire, but he walked away with minor burns and without his eyebrows. speaking of fireballs, the whiskey of the same name apparently puts a damper on your judgment, no kidding. a kentucky man is accused of stealing a school bus and crashing it while drunk on the stuff. so witnesses saw him actually crawl out of the wreck. police say he admitted to downing the fireball and swiping the bus from the local high school. that's not even the most unusual crash in the news tonight. our national bird got stuck in this very, well, undignified situation in maryland over the weekend. animal control workers were there to free the mighty bird from the car's grille, that's right. somehow he looked just fine, though, when he got out. his ego was probably a little bit bruised, though. stuck in a grille. >> he looks like a really
1:58 am
elaborate hood ornament. >> we've seen those, yeah. they got him out safely. i want to know about the guy without the eyebrows. >> and the guy in between who apparently the fireball is -- >> oh, that, too. there's a lot of good ones there, a lot of talkers. >> we have a wide variety of stories in our newscast this evening. let's talk about the wind. we have a storm system drifting into the desert southwest. at the same time there's a hill of atmosphere in the atmosphere, big area of high pressure building towards the west coast that's responsible for the warm-up the next few days. as it pushes west, it's the confluence of these two systems, their proximity to each other, that's forcing all the air through a fairly narrow channel and accelerates the air resulting in gusty northerly winds, but it won't last long. past midday friday the storm system will be weakening, the area of high pressure sliding further north. the pressure gradient will relax and the wind will relax as we head into
1:59 am
the weekend. it will be blustery tonight and tomorrow. here's our hour-by-hour wind gusts as we head through tonight. winds will pick up, especially in the north bay and east bay, 30 to 40-mile-an-hour gusts through midday tomorrow. that's the first burst of the offshore winds. some of the strongest gusts will be in the 40 to 50-mile-an-hour range and then a relative low, not as strong heading through late afternoon tomorrow and evening and another burst of offshore winds by late tomorrow night into early friday morning when we could see more 40 to 50-mile-an-hour gusts. the winds start to back down heading towards late morning. the wind advisory expires at 11:00 a.m. friday. watch how the numbers drop dramatically heading through friday afternoon into friday evening. it will still be breezy, but not nearly as windy already before the sun goes down friday. the offshore winds also correspond to clear skies overhead. we'll see a dry pattern taking hold the next several days. our solar electricity generation, the
2:00 am
numbers will be at the top of the scale the next couple days and likely into the weekend. no clouds out there now, no fog either, another consequence of the offshore winds even though they aren't that strong at sea level yet, temperatures down to 52 degrees in santa rosa, otherwise still mid- to upper 50s and the winds stirring the atmosphere around will keep our temperatures from dropping too far. we'll fall down only to the mid- to upper 40s and low 50s to begin the day thursday. it's a slightly above average starting point and a slightly above average afternoon in store for us temperaturewise as well. it may not feel quite as warm thanks to the blustery conditions. up to 70 degrees in san jose, the warm spot. it's about 4 degrees above normal. upper 60s for the rest of the santa clara valley, mostly upper 60s across the rest of the bay area, just short of 70 in fremont and redwood city and half moon bay into the mid-60s. the offshore wind is pushing the marine air away from the coast. san francisco and oakland upper 60s and close to 70 degrees in the north bay.
2:01 am
these aren't the warmest temperatures we'll experience over the next several days. the mild conditions stick around for a little while as we head into st. patrick's day weekend. let's look at the ten-day temperature outlook for san jose. there's some ups and downs, but settling into the low to mid-70s friday through the weekend and first half of next week before we coast back down to near average temperatures by thursday, friday and saturday of next week. great weather for st. patrick's day weekend. we'll have the st. patrick's day parade in san francisco on saturday, low to mid-60s, lot of sunshine and lots of sunshine across the entire bay area which is great news for both halves of the weekend in dublin. temperatures will top out just above 70 degrees both saturday and again sunday. let's look at the seven-day forecast. we'll start with inland parts of the bay area where temperatures are warmest longest, low to mid-70s through the first half of next week, plenty of sunshine, just a couple fair weather clouds arriving next wednesday.
2:02 am
plenty of sunshine between now and then. a few more clouds, a return of some rain influence towards it the tail end of the seven-day forecast around the bay, but above average temperatures through the first half of next week. along the coast you have a shorter window of warm temperatures, really warm temperatures. it's going to be tomorrow and friday and then back to maybe a few degrees above average over the weekend and into next week, but no areas in the bay area -- what's the proper english way to phrase this? my brain has stopped working at 11:25 at night. there are no rain chances in the seven-day forecast, finally got it out. >> ain't no chance. thank you. we now want to talk about one of the dirtier sides of washington, d.c., nothing to do with the politics. it's the underside of the iconic reflecting pool. you probably haven't seen it like this. it's drained right now. so a guy on a skid steer can clear a
2:03 am
year's worth of goose poop from the pool. the loose change is probably from coin tossing tourists. turns out it all goes to the national mall fund. staying in d.c., kamala harris is teaming up with a different joe to talk cannabis reform.

vice president kamala harris is teaming up with joe. no, not this joe. it's rapper fat joe. this friday the white house is hosting its first public event on cannabis reform. so harris will lead a roundtable discussion with fat joe. biden, the other joe,
2:07 am
said cannabis reform was one of his top priorities during the state of the union. so harris and the rapper will be joined by a group of people that the biden administration pardoned for marijuana convictions. after their partnership maybe she'll say something like this. >> we did it. we did it, joe. >> we had to. if you ever struggled to get out of bed to go to work, you'll really relate to this dog with a job.
2:08 am
2:09 am
so if you're with us at this hour, chances are you're not the type to just jump out of bed at the crack of down unless you're vern glenn. so we would like to have you meet your spirit animal. how's that sound? here's a dog with a job
2:10 am
that really has a hard time getting his day started. >> reporter: donuts is his name and his claim to fame. >> oh, another rough night? >> reporter: he's a groggy doggie. >> are you making your trip back from outer space right now? >> reporter: with millions of fans who relate to his inability to wake up. >> that night sure got you down, boy. >> he really resonated with folks on the night shift and the folks who are not morning people. >> reporter: this 7-year-old great pyrenees mix works the night shift in wilshire farm in virginia where he's the guardian to 15 sheep, but nothing -- >> let me get you a chest rub this morning. >> reporter: -- not chest rubs, not stretches -- >> big stretch. >> reporter: -- nothing keeps donuts from wanting to go back to sleep. >> wakey wakey. >> time to make the donuts. >> reporter: if donuts had an

alarm clock, he'd be pressing the snooze function all the time. >> i brought you some casserole for breakfast. >> reporter: not even food works, even this treat. >> a donut for donuts. >> reporter: sat in his mouth forever before he finally chowed down. owner natasha sims captioned this video of donuts slowly walking, rare footage of donuts awake. his bright-eyed co-worker britches -- >> he's ready to go. >> reporter: -- makes donuts look like a lump of dough. who needs breakfast when you can hit the hay literally? >> oh, so 7, that's a senior? >> are you fighting the fade? >> look at that. >> that's a senior for pyrenees. >> he's working the night sleep. >> i'm going to be sleeping like donuts as soon as i get home tonight. >> we have labs. if you put a

donut or any food in front of them, that's it. this guy was pretty sleepy. >> those are huge dogs.
