we are looking at this morning. some glittering lights on a monday morning. i hear that darren peck is in this morning. >> good morning, guys, a limited engagement. tomorrow we will have additional characters filling in because jess is off. rain is coming in the middle of the week. wednesday, and then again on friday. but for monday, still feeling the aftereffects of the system over the weekend. not so much in terms of rain. not really a whole lot here. what we are still feeling is a bit of a northerly breeze filtering through the bay as the system has left. it will not be as windy today as it was yesterday. unless you are at the coast or in the city. into the afternoon, 15-mile-an-hour breeze in concord and 20 to

25-mile-an-hour in the city. that will make it feel colder. a little bit of an onshore breeze and windchill factor to go with that. what it will feel like today, take the daytime highs, and bring them down a few. more like upper 50s to low 60s for most places. low 40s in los gatos right now. most places will have to grab a jacket, but not terribly windy. i will have the rest of the forecast in a few minutes. let's talk about the freeways, off to a fairly decent start from the bay bridge toll plaza. we did get reports of a crash on the lower deck, east 80, toward the lower deck, blocking one lane, but not seeing a lot of delays or brake lights because of

that. for the meantime, the commute is off to a good start. san francisco police have a mystery on their hands. two people shot to death inside a bayview home. this was the scene on dwight street last night. a lot of questions. as of right now police are not saying a lot. we will keep asking about that. protests in san francisco against israel's planned ground operation in rafah. this morning more than 1 million palestinians are sheltered in that area. tensions between the united states and israel grown more intense and over the weekend the vice president said in israel assault on rafah would be "a huge mistake." a rallying cry historically used by a.i.d.s. activists is now the rally for abortion access.

they fought back at the federal building over the weekend as the supreme court prepares to hear opening arguments on a case that could make open access to abortion were difficult in the country. >> given the supreme court's past record, anything is possible. we want to send a message to the supreme court and everybody else. >> the central dispute in that case is whether the fda overlooked safety problems when they made medication easier to obtain. in the wake of the mayor announcing efforts to curb crime, the corporate has decided there is too much crime to ensure the safety of its customers and employees. >> reporter: this sunday marks the end of an era for in-n-out burger in oakland. alina is

just one of many employees saying goodbye to this location where she has worked since 2012. this is the chain's first ever permanent closure and it comes amidst rising concerns over crime in the area. >> is a really bitter moment, because being that oakland is high in crime, it has increased extremely over years. >> if you are wondering about the future of the employees, they were all given the chance to be transferred to other locations. she declined and says she has began working at home for another company but is concerned about the future of the city. >> this is the main spot, but again, it goes back to oakland losing everybody up, the

raiders, the a's. it is sad to see. >> many customers wind up throughout the day to get a last plate and to show support to employees. dozens of cars ordering the iconic double double or the 4 x 4 like maria who has been living in oakland for over 10 years and usually comes here with her kids. she said she is very sad about the closure because it is located in a perfect spot for oakland and it is sad to see they are closing it because of people committing crimes. they announce the closure back in january and said despite taking repeated steps for safer conditions, the customers and associates are regularly victimized by car break-ins, property damage, theft and armed robberies. the mayor said she would prioritize security in this area and you can see a police car stationed in the parking lot today, but a security guard told us that he

witnessed at least one car breaking per day. >> the whole theft thing happens so quickly. it's mainly inside the parking lot and they target people who travel with rental cars. >> the closest in-n-out locations are now san leandro. the former chief of lubbock will become the new chief and face these problems from day one. the counterpoint to dismal headlines, one business closes and we see another open. >> it is an independent vintage clothing shop and the owners are completely dedicated to the city. we meet a couple of young entrepreneurs.

>> reporter: watch as people pass by the newest store on lakeshore avenue. they do a double take and then turned back. what exactly is that? it looks like a store but could be an art gallery. it is a vintage clothing store created by a 20-year-old partnership. >> bringing in a different type of retail , a new experience with brick-and-mortar, that is the goal. >> used clothing is the popular trend among millennial's but the trick is finding just the right pieces. it's okay to be worn and even frayed but it has to express creativity and is one-of-a-kind. >> it really is a piece of art itself and really shows your fashion and being different. that is what is important and cool for consumers. you won't see it at any other store for the most part. it is just this one size, and we hope it is your size. >> these are original 501s

from, i believe, 1968. >> these pants are actually from the summer of love? >> most likely. someone was having fun in these. >> is much as they are peddling clothing, they are also trying to market their city heard both grew up in oakland and are well aware of the crime that has pushed so many businesses away. across the street is colonial donut, a business that was infamously wrapped three times in six months. but they are opening the store as a way to stand up for their hometown. >> oakland has the biggest heart, it defines us but also struggles through the bad publicity and slander. we are still here. >> people run with what they see on instagrammer read in the news. but you will see families picnicking, people in the farmers market. a lively city that locals understand

and that is the message we want to bring to the bigger market and the rest of the bay area. >> for young people who love the town, that pitches as appealing as the graphic tees and patched levi's. >> there is a lot that we go through as oakland residents and bay area residents, a lot of things that cast across the country and the internet, but we are still here and still living and breathing our inspirations and the things that allow us to be a unique community. >> there are a lot of pressures on businesses these days and too many operating in oakland are seen as a liability that has familiar names decide to cut and run, it leaves opportunities for those who believe in the city to stick around and maybe even start something new. >> that is what makes them community heroes.

the cold in the midwest. states like nebraska, south dakota and minnesota racing for at least eight inches of snow. friends in minneapolis are bracing for 12 inches. >> and i was complaining about the weather here at home. the northern end of the sacramento valley sure got a taste of the weather effects. >> snow was the keyword with this one. what you are looking at over my shoulder, the time lapse of a hard-working volunteer that was clearing up a mound of snow blocking and entering sign for the volcanic national park. that is a three-hour drive north of here. not nearly as popular as other national parks but just as pretty. park officials said there was still as much as 12 feet of snow left. that is pretty common for the area, to see as much as 30 feet of snow over a winter season. get that sign clear so we all know where we are going. what a great

perspective is that. let's come back home, and we will do a comparison now. instead of snow in the mountains, let's talk about rain. here is the tally so far , where five representative spots are across the bay. for seasonal rainfall, we start to tally that on october 1st and we are doing really good. we had a pretty active winter. it may even seem like we've had a bigger winter than these numbers suggest. san jose sitting at 130% of average, oakland still has not made it to 90%. if you generalize it, we are sitting right around 100%. let's talk about today, in between systems right now, no rain coming today. if you look at the big picture, satellite is fairly clear. daytime highs today, looking at morning lows last

visit, currently upper 40s and low 50s. we will be in the upper 50s for inland areas, and san francisco, upper 50s coming with a caveat. and onshore breeze today will bring a bit of a wind chill. not as strong as yesterday was. today will be more of an onshore breeze and anyone near the water will feel that. let's get into the rest of the forecast. a system is coming our way with rain for wednesday and a follow-up right after that on friday. across the pacific, you can see why we get two days with nothing. by wednesday, let's come in for a closer look, as this system comes in we may even see some showers as late as tuesday night, but it wouldn't be a

lot. once we get to this point you can see some of the better rain coming right through wednesday in the morning and afternoon. we will probably only get about .25 of an inch , but that will be coming through on wednesday. it's followed up by the next system, watch the one behind it. right there, that is a little more of an interesting looking storm. that's for friday and saturday. the question on this one in the long range has been the aim . it has been a bit wobbly and still holding in terms of friday and saturday for us. if wednesday we get about .25 -.50 of an inch of rain, the totals for friday and saturday can be twice that, maybe even more. so noticeably more rainy friday into saturday. questions still remain as if that system still

lingers into sunday. before we get any of that, the next rain is coming on wednesday, i will see you with more of the forecast coming up in the next half hour. as you get up and out the door early, so far, so good. here is a look at conditions along the bay bridge toll plaza. if you are coming out of the city, maybe toward the east bay, there is a bit of a trouble spot, a crash is locking the middle lanes on the lower deck from harrison onto the lower deck of the bay bridge. it might be a little slow because of that. everything else is looking great. 880, both directions, nimitz freeway moving well. out of tracy, westbound, working to the altamont pass. that commuter route is getting a little busy already, but no

crashes . there is a wind advisory in effect for that area. taking a live look from the stanford campus, and we hope you got some sleep after your heart was probably racing during the game. the rsv can severely affect the lungs and lower airways. but i'm protected with arexvy. arexvy is a vaccine used to prevent lower respiratory disease from rsv in people 60 years and older.

wake up, stanford, we know you are doing that with a smile this morning. feeling great after your women basketball stars move on to the sweet 16 in the ncaa tournament. congratulations. >> we told you last week that the cardinals needed kiki to bring her a game and she did not disappoint. stanford and the state battling it out in what people are already calling in overtime classic. knocking down the jumper with two minutes to go and a couple of moments later goes right to the rack for an easy lay in , finishing with a career-high of 41 points. under a minute, stanford up by two, big response by ran, giving the cyclones of the lead. burke dimitri, from the top of the

monday, look no further than this scene over the weekend. the community wins out over competition. yells marching band couldn't make the weekend tournament play in the first round so idaho heard about that and stepped up. they donned yellow gear, won their fight song and played their hearts out. they edged out the competition by two points and they ended the run yesterday after the match with san diego state but i think this is one of the biggest wins over the weekend. >> it gave me goosebumps knowing they did that for them. that's what that is about. coming together for each other even though they are competing. let's take a look at the march madness bracket. this morning, we want to give you the standings. max and sarah are tied for first, right now with the score of 102. i'm 84,

reed moved down a little bit with 74, unfortunately. how did it feel to be first for a couple of days? >> it felt almost embarrassing, because i know nothing about what we are doing, so to be in first place for so long i was like, what happened? >> it feels good to start off on a good note, but at least i'm in the running. hey, log on and play with us. let's take a live look at the coliseum where fans will get to see the bay area rivalry, the a's will host the giants. the a's will break open the official 2024 season this thursday and they will pin up alex wood against shane bieber. meanwhile tomorrow the giants will host the a's for the second game in the exhibition series. this one could be a big one as it may be pablo sandoval's last game

from cbs news bay area, this is the morning edition. looking from the top of the market looking east, it was a nice weekend if you liked this body little rain showers. i did my run, five miles in the rain. i have to keep my goal, and i did it. >> hopefully it wasn't too bad in the north bay. >> if you look back, it started raining friday night and pretty much through the entire duration of saturday, it was about .75 of an inch of rain. now it was just like another run-of-the-mill rainmaker. not super impactful. there are two more coming. one on wednesday

and another after that for friday and saturday. just a quick check, there are still showers way of the coast but they won't touch us today. just a few high clouds, plenty of breaks with blue sky, the one thing left over from the system is still a little bit of a breeze. the rain turned off but it wasn't very comfortable with the northwind. today, slightly different story. not as windy inland, but near the coast and especially in the city you will get an onshore breeze, so you will still have 20 to 25 mile an hour breeze. that is almost more of a seasonal thing. we are getting into that time of the year where you should expect the afternoon and early evening onshore breeze near the water. temperatures are for the most part in the low 50s. most numbers sitting right in that spot. fairly comfortable mornings, not like we have this big mess of cold air. we

are in spring now, the coldest numbers we've got are in the upper 40s in the north bay. i will have that full forecast, including that next rain, in just a bit. the roadways are dry, so that helps a lot as people commute this morning. no median lights just yet but that will likely change in a few minutes. something to keep in mind this morning, if you are heading out of san francisco toward oakland, eastbound 80 at harrison there is a crash blocking as you enter the lower deck of the bay bridge. so it is a little slow at the approach. here is a live look at 880, if you are taking this drive northbound all the way from the coliseum to the bay bridge, it is moving along pretty well. this just in this morning, the boeing ceo stepping down by the end of the

year, the departure comes after nearly five years in the role. they are facing pressure to make changes after the recent quality control issues on commercial jets made by boeing. the chairman and head of the commercial airplane unit are also leaving. now to a new developing story, the faa is considering temporary action against united airlines this week after a number of troubling incidents. part of the action means barring united from launching new routes or not certifying new captains. this month alone we saw a piece of the outer body of a united airlines flight falloff and a wheel that fell off one of their flights taking off from sfo. with all of this in mind, should flyers be anxious? take a listen to what one expert is saying. >> i don't think the traveling public needs to be concerned. the regulatory authority will make sure that the united airlines will provide the same service that the public is entitled to.

>> last unit airline crash was in 2009 when a plane crashed into a home outside of buffalo. a berkeley family unhappy with the choices of the alameda county district attorney pamela preis at the killings of their sons two years ago. they were shot to death by a 17-year-old suspect, someone who at the time was legally considered a juvenile. fast-forward today, the suspect is over 18 but price is keeping the case in juvenile court and the suspect could get a maximum sentence of only seven years. something that the families of those killed say is not enough for two lives lost. >> reporter: a year and a half after the shooting, emotions are still rough for the victims family. melanie garcia misses her cousins every day. >> sometimes i feel like i'm

going crazy because i feel like i see them in the crowd. >> reporter: melanie was extremely close to the two boys and says the killings tore apart the family and they will never be the same. >> christmas and every other holiday does not feel complete. we try, but their absence is felt. >> reporter: she says they are serving a life sentence of grief. >> the defendant has not been sentenced yet. seven years is the max he could get. he could get one or he could get none. >> reporter: melanie says about 10 days ago pamela preis decided to keep the suspect in the juvenile court system. the family pleaded with price to charge the suspect as an adult. the suspect was 17 years old at the time and is accused of killing 15-year-old angel and

17-year-old jc at a birthday party in oakland in october of 2022. gunfire also injured additional teenagers. police say the brothers were innocent victims, they were students at berkeley high. >> you cannot hold someone to the same standards when they are a teenager as you would an adult. >> the executive director of dream beyond bars has personally met with the suspect. he and his staff are working to turn the young man's life around. >> prison is not the answer. >> george and other pamela preis supporters will hold a press conference on tuesday and they want to show the public that they support the decision in this case and other cases involving minors. >> another d.a. would at least hear us out. >> reporter: melanie is urging the public to contact and pressure price to reverse her decision. >> there is nothing anybody can

do to bring back angel and jc. they can help us heal and help us feel as though there has been justice and closure for our boys. >> we asked price for comment and the office replied that they cannot discuss cases involving minors. police were forced to fire on a man in a home with a knife. he wielded a knife and officers told him to stay put and drop the weapon. he refused and that is when they say, on approach, they were forced to fire. we don't know the man's name but we do know he died later at a hospital. net is something we haven't seen since 1994. a mountain lion attacked a pair of brothers leaving one dead, in a remote area near sacramento on saturday. fish and wildlife euthanized the

mountain lion. a follow-up to a deadly terror attack in russia, brand-new video of four suspects appearing in court sunday in connection with the deaths of 130. each showed signs of severe beatings as they face formal terrorism charges, three of them submitted guilty pleas, isis claimed responsibility for the attack and the russian president pointed the finger at ukraine, accusing ukraine of letting terrorists into russia. ukraine fired back saying pulling is using the tragedy to falsely bolster his support for the war in ukraine that is entering its third year. former president donald trump faces deadline today in the new york civil case, he faces having half $1 billion worth of assets seized. they have asked the appeals court to pause on the payment and accept a lesser bond of $100 million. that is his request, whether he

gets it, we don't know. celebrating bridge builders where we live, connecting kids to healthcare, especially in oakland. we have the story that celebrates the efforts to give families tools and the support needed to thrive for more than a quarter century. >> reporter: this year marks 25 years of california's first five program. the executive director says over those 25 years, the program has helped millions of parents and young children. >> we are so excited to be celebrating the 25th anniversary. 25 years holding strong serving california's youngest residents, if you will. >> first five was established in 1999 after voters approved a ballot initiative the year before to tax tobacco products to fund services for children

kind of windy and cold yesterday as the system was leaving and there are still some winds this morning that you will feel when you step outside, particularly closer to the water. there will be more of an onshore breeze this afternoon. for monday in the afternoon, most inland spots, it won't be like yesterday with that cold wind chill, but if you are near the water, there will be. they will be about at 20-mile-an-hour onshore breeze. using the virtual map, looking at the daytime highs, low to mid 60s. just a couple of degrees off the mark for average, but 5 to 7 degrees cooler than what we were doing for much of the first part of last week when temperatures were in the low 70s consistently in the santa clara valley. san francisco up to 58 today, with 20 mile an hour onshore breeze. bigger

things to discuss. two systems coming our way. for wednesday and friday, going out to the big picture view. we've got a couple of days because that is still all the way on the other side of the pacific. as we watch it come together, the first one on wednesday does not deliver a ton of rain but it does give us about .25 of an inch, pretty much bay area wide. this is the less impressive of the two systems. there are two separate systems coming our way. if we look at wednesday, it is on again , off again. not a washout by any means. there will probably be some left over showers from that on thursday. it is difficult to say whether the thursday rain is left over showers from wednesday or the leading edge of the next system. watch what happens. the next system comes in on friday and that looks more impressive. that brings us more widespread steady rain
