investigation. and signs of progress. the first ship passes through a new temporary channel one week after the deadly bridge collapse after the deadly bridge collapse in baltimore. captioning funded by cbs pse in baltimore. good morning. good morning. i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. april is ushering in not just showers but severe storms across much of the country. extensive damage was reported in barnsdall, oklahoma, overnight, this after a possible tornado moved through. millions are under severe storm and flash flood threats all the way from alabama to ohio, while some parts of the northern u.s. are preparing for snow. cbs's jarred hill is joining us from new york, which is also bracing for a rough few days ahead. jarred, good morning. >> reporter: yes, shanelle, we're looking at a couple of days of rain in new york, but nothing like the severe weather threats across the country, including as you mentioned it,

yeah, that spring snowfall expected in the north. as millions of americans are trying to get into the swing of spring, folks in the upper midwest and new england are bracing for snow. >> that groundhog lied to us. i'm very upset. it's april. why is there snow coming? >> reporter: massachusetts hardware stow owner jack bernard said the april snow forecast is bad for business. >> obviously we want to get all the spring stuff out on the floor and start selling it and put this stuff away, but we can't. >> reporter: rarely early spring snow blanketed parts of new mexico yesterday while powerful thunderstorms brought hail that pummeled parts of texas and the southern plains, dark ominous clouds lined the skies in kansas and oklahoma where storms caused extensive damage in parts of osage county. strong winds and heavy rain whipped through illinois and missouri, flooding streets. as the northern u.s. braces for snow, floods are forecast in the mid-atlantic.

meanwhile cleanup continues out west in big sur, california, after weekend storms caused a big chunk of highway one to collapse. so you've got rain, hail, possible snow, but check this out, shanelle. the national weather service is also warning about the threat of fire weather in parts of texas because of the low humidity and the high wind. back to you. >> a messy couple of days ahead. jarred hill in new york, thank you. to the war in gaza now where six international aid workers and their palestinian driver were killed in an air strike. the world central kitchen, the charity founded by celebrity chef jose andrés, confirms the deaths. the organization says the team was traveling in two armored cars after dropping off a hundred tons of food at a warehouse in central gaza when they were hit. the group says they had coordinated their movements with the idf. the israeli military says they're now conducting a thorough review at the highest

levels. chef andrés released a statement on x saying he is heartbroken and grieving. world central kitchen is pausing operations in the region for now. and tensions are rising elsewhere as well. iran is vowing revenge as it blames israel for an air strike on its consulate in syria that killed two generals. here's cbs's cristian benavides. >> reporter: this israeli air strike destroyed a building in damascus. syrian and iranian officials say two iranian generals and officers were killed. israel said it had no comment on the latest attack in syria, which raised concerns that the mid east conflict could spread. in gaza, this israeli group withdrew from the palestinians' hospital after a two-week raid. the idf killed about 200 militants and detained hundreds. >> i believe the terrorist

takeover of shifa and the subsequent special forces operation to clear the hospital of terrorists will be studied by future generations of military strategists at west point and sandhurst as the gold standard for urban warfare. >> reporter: palestinians say they returned to the hospital to find widespread destruction with bodies inside and outside. >> there's nothing about this round of confrontations. we're talking about the longevity of suffering of the palestinians. >> reporter: meanwhile in jerusalem, protesters are demanding benjamin netanyahu do more to bring home dozens of hostages held in gaza. >> they're not concerned about what happens in the country and with the people. they're concerned about maintaining the position in the government. >> reporter: some called on the government to reach a cease-fire deal to free hostages and hold early elections. cristian benavides, cbs news.

donald trump has posted a $175 million bond in his new york civil fraud case. it prevents the state from seizing the former president's assets to collect the almost $500 million judgment against him while he appeals. and a new york judge expanded a gag order on trump in his upcoming criminal hush money trial. the order now forbids trump from making public comments about the judge's daughter and the family of manhattan d.a. alvin bragg. trump has made critical and false statements about the judge's daughter on social media. the supreme court has upheld the current 15-week ban, which now means a stricter ban can go into effect in just 30 days. the court also ruled abortion rights will be on the state ballot in november, letting voters decide whether to enshrine voters rights in the

florida constitution. >> i think it's fair to say the democrats are pretty excited about this being on the ballot, and what they believe is that this could energize not just democrats, but independents, no-party preference, voters, swing voters. >> up until now florida has been viewed as a safe haven for abortions since the current ban has fewer abortions than neighboring states. crews are in a desperate race to reopen one of the busiest ports in the country. a temporary channel was opened yesterday in the port of baltimore. this is video of the first ship leaving. it's been trapped there since last week's collapse of the francis scott key bridge. cbs's nicole sganga has more. >> reporter: buoys in the water and a lifeline in the waterway. >> definitely debris in the water. that's a big concern. >> reporter: the u.s. coast guard now marking clear sections of the channel and opening up an

alternate passageway for smaller ships. nearby sparks fly as crews surgically cut the steel remains of the key bridge. they're poised to remove a 350-ton piece, but problems remain. >> what we're finding is it's more complicated than we originally thought. these girders are tangled together, intertwined, making it very difficult to figure out where you eventually need to cut. >> reporter: colonel estee pinchasin is looking into it. they have to look at the twisted metal after each cut. the bodies of two construction workers have been found, but four other victims are unaccounted for and presumed dead as officials brace for a storm system. >> we've taken out precautions, put out four anchors of the stern of the vessel to make sure

and lift-off of falcon 9. >> we have lift-off as it successfully launched in southern california last night. it's carrying 22 satellites. the launch had been postponed a few days due to all the wet weather. the disappearance of a preacher's wife and a friend is being called suspicious. plus a security incident at an fbi office. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "atlanta journal-constitution" reports a drove driver was arrested after an suv breached the gate at the fbi office. authorities say another vehicle tried to break through the gate but the suv slammed into a

security barrier just inside the gate. several agents who were passing by took the man into custody. a law enforcement source says no weapons were found inside the suv. there is no word on a motive. "the kansas city star" says a preacher's wife and friend are now missing after their vehicle was found abandoned. authorities say veronica butler and jillian kelley left kansas saturday to pick up children but they never arrived at their intended destination. their car was found on the side of the road near the kansas/oklahoma state line. kelley is the wife of a minister of a nebraska church. authorities are calling the disappearances suspicious. and convicted murderer alex murdaugh was sentenced to 40 years in federal prison for financial crimes. the district attorney stole millions of dollars from his

a mixed day on wall street monday after a strong report on u.s. manufacturing that cast doubts on when the fed may cut interest rates. the dow dropped 240 points. the nasdaq gained 17 points, and the s&p 500 lost 10 points. google said it will delete billions of web browsing records as part of a class-action settlement. they're accused of tracking online activity even in chrome's incognito mode, which was thought to be private. the value of the settlement is more than $5 billion. google will also let private browsing users block third-party cookies for the next five years. united airlines is asking pilots to take unpaid leave next month and possibly longer u because of delays in boeing deliveries. they've been grappling with a slew of safety incidents following the alaska door blowout. experts say the tight supply of
