and outrage and heartbreak. the accidental israeli air strike that killed seven aid workers setting off a firestorm of reaction from around the globe. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. breaking overnight, a powerful earthquake rocked taiwan killing at least seven people, collapsing and damaging dozens of buildings. the 7.4-magnitude quake was centered off taiwan's east coast. it is the strongest earthquake to hit the island in at least 25 years. buildings shook, and some were left tilted. more than 700 were hurt. rescue efforts are under way to free dozens trapped in the debris. >> it's shaking, and the side -- my house and the building is kind of new. so it's a -- kind of solid, but it's swinging. >> my mom was crying, and then i told her to hide under the

table. >> the quake caused massive landslides. train service was suspended, and highways were shut down. tsunami warnings were issued for taiwan, southern japan, and the philippines, but they were later lifted. the quake was also felt in parts of china. back here at home, americans across several states are cleaning up after powerful storms brought tornadoes, strong winds, and heavy rain. just take a look at just how extensive the damage is in nelson county, kentucky. structures completely destroyed, and debris scattered. thi morning millions of people are still under the threat of tornado, flood, and winter storm conditions. cbs' jarred hill is joining us for here in new york where the rain is still coming down. good morning. >> reporter: hey, good morning, anne-marie. it's not pleasant in new york, but this is a far cry from some of the dangerous situations in parts of the midwest as well as the south with the storms creating situations where nearly 200,000 people are without power. as the daylight comes, a better

glimpse at the damage left behind. >> dude that is a -- tornado. >> reporter: wild winds brought by spring storms are whipping through parts of the south and midwest. gusts in indiana knocked over these semi trucks on the highway. homes left damaged, trees toppled. >> it was just bright and sunny. all of a sudden it went dark. >> reporter: in ohio where folks are keeping watch of tornado warnings, strong winds flipped this rv onto its side. rushing floodwaters had these two women stuck under a bridge in columbus. first responders came to the rescue. >> it's devastating. >> reporter: billy glen kennedy is picking up what's left of his funeral home after a tornado tore through sunbright, tennessee. >> just thankful that nobody was hurt. we'll just have to move forward. >> reporter: winds blew the roof off this house in kentucky and brought a massive billboard down on an empty car in west virginia. tornado sirens blared over a ballpark in the state's capital sending college teams running for shelter.

the severe weather is being blamed for at least one death in oklahoma, a homeless woman who was seeking shelter inside of a drainage pipe. and then the floodwaters came along, showcasing how dangerous this can be. >> yeah. really good reminder. jarred hill in new york, thank you. there is growing outrage following an israeli air strike that killed seven aid workers delivering food to civilians in gaza. the world central kitchen identified the victims including 33-year-old u.s. canadian citizen jacob flickinger. cbs' holly williams from reports -- reports from tel aviv. >> reporter: world central kitchen says its team members were traveling through central gaza in three vehicles when they were killed by an israeli strike. it appears their convoy was hit multiple times, including a direct strike to an armored car, though it was clearly marked with the group's name. world central kitchen says it was coordinating its movements

with israel's military which has promised to investigate what happened. three british citizens were killed, an australian woman, zomi frankcom, and a polish man, damian sobol. their palestinian driver saif abu taha was buried today. israel's prime minister, benjamin netanyahu, called the incident tragic and unintentional in a statement, also saying, quote, this happens in war. >> these people are heroes. >> reporter: the u.s. has demanded a swift and impartial investigation with strong words for its ally. >> we've impressed upon the israelis the absolute imperative of doing more to protect innocent civilian lives, be they palestinian children, women, and men, or be they aid workers. >> reporter: world central kitchen was founded by jose andres, the award-winning spanish american chef, and feeds the hungry everywhere from the u.s. to ukraine. >> ukraine needs our help

because we need them to win this war because we need to be feeding the world. >> reporter: the israeli government needs to stop this indiscriminate killing, andres posted on social media last night, and stop using food as a weapon. funded by donations, his charity's been shipping hundreds of tons of food to the gaza strip, even building a makeshift pier and then distributing the aid by truck. the united nations says at least 196 aid workers have been killed in gaza and the west bank since october. world central kitchen says it's decided to pause its operations in this region. holly williams, cbs news, tel aviv, israel. now to the race for the white house. voters in four states went to the polls yesterday, a largely symbolic vote now that president biden and former president trump have locked up their parties' nominations. biden and trump won in rhode island, connecticut, new york, and wisconsin.

on the campaign trail the two are attacking each other on separate issues. here's nancy cordes. joe biden's border bloodbath, and that's what it is, it's a bloodbath -- >> reporter: despite criticism from both sides, former president trump used the word bloodbath again, this time to describe crimes committed by migrants. >> the democrats said please don't call them animals. they're humans. i said, they're not humans. they're not humans. they're animals. >> reporter: it was 2.5 weeks ago while talking about the future of the u.s. auto industry that trump warned of a bloodbath if he isn't elected in november. his campaign went a step further, launching an immigration-related website called biden bloodbath, though there is no evidence that undocumented migrants commit violent crimes at higher rates than u.s. citizens. what's the white house reaction to the use of that term, bloodbath? >> we have to denounce any

violent rhetoric that we hear. certainly from our leaders, right. >> reporter: the biden campaign was focused on abortion, launching this new ad one day after florida's supreme court cleared the way for a six-week abortion ban to go into effect next months. -- next month. >> donald trump doesn't trust women. i do. >> reporter: the state court allowed an abortion rights measure to appear on florida ballots come november. the biden camp hopes that will help drive democrats there to the polls just as similar initiatives have in other states. >> i will be voting this november. if i have to be in there with my crutches or wheelchair, i will be there. >> reporter: trump was campaigning in another key state, michigan, where he brought up the $175 million bond he just posted in his new york civil fraud case. >> i'm the only one that has to put up a bond. i put up a bond -- i didn't do anything wrong. >> reporter: trump was running out of time to post that huge bond, but an l.a. billionaire

and trump supporter bailed him out. don hankey made his fortune issuing subprime auto loans, and this is not the first time that he's come to trump's aid. he's helped out at least two other times and provided trump a loan that helped him refinance trump tower back in 2022. nancy cordes, cbs news, washington. voters in enid, oklahoma, ousted a city council member with ties to white nationalism. unofficial results posted on the state election board website show that iraq war veteran judd blevins lost his seat. he was elected last year. last week he acknowledged that he marched in the unite the right rally in charlottesville, virginia, in 2017. crews opened a second temporary channel to allow small barges and tugboats to get around the wreckage. -- wreckage of a collapsed bridge in baltimore. mangled steel is blocking the port's main shipping channel. work is continuing on a third

"the los angeles times" reports that video shows a 15-year-old girl who was kidnapped by her father was shot and killed by deputies. savannah graziano can be seen walking toward san bernardino county sheriff's deputies after they stopped her father's pickup truck back in 2022. the father shot and killed her mother the day before and abducted the girl. she got out of the truck and was following deputies' instructions when there was a hail of gunfire. >> stop, stop, stop -- walk, walk, walk -- [ gunfire ] >> stop! stop! >> the father was also killed. it took more than a year for authorities, though, to release the video which contradicts what they said in the aftermath of the shooting. they originally claimed the girl shot at deputies. and the "new york post" says kansas city chiefs wide receiver rashee rice admitted he was involved in a six-car accident in dallas. rice was in a leased lamborghini

saturday that was racing a friend in a corvette owned by rice. that's according to tmz sports. the vehicles lost control and caused a chain-reaction collision. four people were hurt. tmz says rice admitted his involvement in a text to the company that leased hip the -- leased him the lamborghini. and "people" says sean "diddy" combs' ex-girlfriend lisa hilton claims federal agents used excessive force on their sons when they raided combs' los angeles home. hilton posted security video on instagram. it apparently shows heavily armed agents pushing one son against a wall while handcuffing him. another son is seen walking with his hands above his head with a gun aimed at him. they were not arrested. the raids were part of a federal sex trafficking investigation. combs has denied wrongdoing. still to come, a las vegas landmark cashes out. a legendary hotel and casino turns off the lights for good after nearly seven decades. lig after nearly seven decades. i'm jonathan lawson,
