taking on extra meeting. how the conflict in gaza is renewing their push for peace. it is once again a first alert weather day. the east bay has most of the action and we are not done with the storms just yet. a live look at the clouds over the south bay right now. we have, once again, seen snow up on the peaks. mount hamilton covered in white and for a second straight day more hail like earlier in walnut creek. sending it over to our first alert meteorologist darren peck, darren? >> reporter: first i have to show you the front row seat we had today when the complex of thunderstorms started over napa. this is the camera on top of mount diablo. looking out towards vallejo, watch the showers, see the heavier bands of rain with the thunderstorm. it then hits the lens of our camera that sits on top. it 3,000 feet. that is light no. then the light snow melts off

and you see the next storm marching their way on 680. look where they are now. following the same line. this is a real focus as we have gone into the afternoon, churching our perspective a little bit you can watch the progression, thunderstorms develop, working their way down 680. another one starting. take a look at a closer view here. same place where it all started four hours ago in napa, there is another sell there, that is just east of downtown for you. that is about to cross the area. when we get back torgt in the complete forecast we will track this. it does not last much longer but we are still in first alert status because of this. back to you. we are following breaking news, reporting of a shooting along i-80. witnesses told chp there was a car to car shooting near ashby, causing the car to crash. the driver was taken to the hospital. we don't know if that person was shot or injured in the crash.

our other top story, publish safety and police staffing are hot-button areas. the alameda police department made the news for $75,000 hiring for the recruits. at the time a third of the slots were filled. the question, has is worked? we followed one of the department's newest members to find out. >> reporter: when kayla was a little girl, a police officer helped her family during a particularly rough time. that positive interaction triggered a lifelong obsession with becoming a cop. >> being able to have someone guide our family into a better situation really made me feel good and it made me want to explore what that profession was like. >> reporter: now, at 26, she is a newly minted police officer

at the alameda pd. but little did she know that dream job would come with an unexpected bonus >> it was very exciting and very grateful to be able to have that. >> reporter: last year with nearly a third of its 88 sworn positions sitting vacant the city of alameda decided to do something rather unusual. give new hires a $75,000 signing bonus. the highest in the nation. that is on top of a six figure salary. kayla was already considering alameda and other police departments when she heard about the bonus. while she says the money was not the main factor in her decision it definitely helped steer her in alameda's direction. >> i was very much like to be a homeowner one day. it was nice to know there would be a bonus that i would be able to put down towards a house. >> there is a number of different things that come into

play here. >> reporter: alameda's police chief >> it is difficult to afford housing here in the bay area. knowing that is a burden or an obstacle or something people will struggle with how can we come up with creative ways to remove that? >> reporter: police departments across the country are in the midst of an unprecedented staffing crisis. that has caused an arm's race of sorts with cities looking for out of the box incentives to lure candidates. it seems to be working. >> we went from a 30% vacancy rate to about 15%. and, if all goes as planned i expect our entire patrol division to be full by this summer. >> reporter: in the first quarter of 2024, alameda has seen a noticeable drop in larceny, vandalism and fraud. auto theft was up 114% last

year has gone down 17% since january. another critical measure the department's response time to crimes has also gone down 34 seconds in the last year. still, not everyone is on board with alameda's bonus bonanza. >> we need to not treat police officers as if they are athletes or super stars. >> reporter: jennifer is an alameda resident and a former member of the city's police oversight task force. she says alameda is spending north of $1.5 million on the bonuses and san jose pd, a police force 10 times that, is spending just $150,000. >> alameda out spends 85% of law enforcement departments in the country. that was before we offered $75k in hiring bonuses.

>> reporter: alameda pd says they are funding the bonuses by reallocating unspent police salaries from last year. as for kayla, her first day on patrol ended with an arrest of a car theft. and a grateful owner who was able to get his vehicle back. >> definitely got into the job to help people out each day. so, even little things like this are definitely a win. >> reporter: winning the war on crime with more officers on the beat. courtesy of the alameda police department's bonus round. >> in toward qualify for the full 75% bonus new recruit his to commit to serve at least five years on the force. today, san francisco supervisor filed paperwork to join the city's crowded mayor's race. he is supposed to make his official announcement tomorrow. he wants to be a neighborhood mayor. >> you know, i started out as a neighborhood guy. i started out

as a neighborhood activist in north beach. i don't think that this is about progressive or moderates, this is about taking care of san francisco and being a mayor who knows how. >> he will be the fifth major candidate to declare. mayor london-breed is defending her seat. >> liars, liars, liars. that was a news conference that turned into a shouting match at a san francisco neighborhood. angry group showed up to blast the city official who they say is soft on crime. anne makovec has more on the war of words. >> reporter: it was ugly and it got personal showing how the debate over public safety is heating up. not only the mayoral race but down the ballot. >> automated license plate readers. >> reporter: it started innocent enough. a protester giving a thumb's down as she

spoke about a campaign about an app to help chinese speaking merchants. >> we know law enforcement can not the only answer >> that did not play well for the group. during her years as supervisor she is critical of the resources given to the police department's budget. >> she thinks she can sit in the ivory tower and make the decisions and not realize it has real consequences on residents and business owners on us. >> reporter: she eventually came outside to do an interview with us but had to deal with the crowd. >> you are not as clever as you think you are. >> reporter: eventually they let her speak. a little. >> i think it is up fortunate. a group of people playing politics with possible safety. >> reporter: she says she has been asking for more police resources >> what we have been told is, we don't have the money and maybe that is the problem. the problem is that we have not been facing an equity when it

comes to resources, distribution. >> reporter: the message was falling on deaf ears and she took off. >> you are just . >> you are doing a miserable job. >> she say progressive supervisor, she barely beat her competitor during the last election and now with redistricting in play it is certainly going to be an interesting race, sara? >> yeah, we are seeing the public safety issue coming up in so many ways t is clear there are a group of people who are truly unhappy with the status quo. >> a lot of people are. you know, who is exactly to blame and what policies exactly, you know, that is all up for debate. we are seeing it, it is a heated one. >> thank you very much. the police in san francisco investigating a deadly shooting that happened inside of a barbershop on the mission. investigators say one man died at the scene. the police are still looking for the shooter

>> okay. yes. very, very sunny, right? >> still cold, though. >> it was. it has been noticeably cold. you have been talking about that. it was a giant's jacket day >> for a lot of people out there. but blue sky >> which was nice. raining at a baseball game it is fine, we death penalty with it but it is nice. >> 20 miles inland there was a thunderstorm that prompted the national weather service to put out weather statements and small hail. there is one more right now. it is a perfect example today, talking about the nature of the storm with isolated thunderstorms, more time when you are not going to get rained on than what you are, more blue sky than anything else, if you were in the inland east bay for the last four hours there has been quite a show going on over here. where we left off at the top of the newscast, we were looking at live doppler. you could see the current cell. this is one that redeveloped. spilling out of napa, grazing vallejo. it is going farther

inland. heading pack from mount diablo. there is another two hours to go like this. and if we put it in the future cast, high-resolution models can depict that cell perfectly. if we gauge that and play this forward now, watch the time tick by. this takes us through the 7:00 hour, danville you get a little more of this one. in the 8:00 hour, it tarts to fizzle. this will not be as impressive as what came through here at 3:00 and 5:00 today. you will still get light showers, while you are getting the light band of rain there, grazing like fremont peak everybody else is done with this. you will be done, too. same forecast model just a bigger picture so you can see how limited of an area has that and tomorrow we are done. time to look forward. i want to show you the next system. another one coming in here. watch the time on this. that is tomorrow afternoon. this line of rain right here, a weak cold front. coming through in the cover of darkness. saturday night, late,

into very early sunday morning. we will get light rain on it. it falls apart. by the time the sun comes up it is gone. saturday, sunday, you don't have it. when you get to the seven-day did not put the rain on it. did not have the heart to put rain on if it was just going to do it before the sun comes up. cold air is still here. so, if we look at tomorrow morning's lows it will be just as cold for tomorrow as today. you will see more upper 30s looking at the inland valleys, especially in the north bay. santa rosa, good at 35 degrees again for the morning low tomorrow. so, that is really haul that is left from this system. still cold tomorrow morning, day time highs in the lower 60s for saturday and sunday and then a pretty big warm up coming our way next week. before i get to the sen day i want --

seven-day, i want to show you monday. our view of the solar eclipse. at 11:00 there is no clouds, a great show for that. the visual on it, this is what the partial eclipse looks like for us. here is what it will look like for dallas and all of the other cities that are right within that line of sight. totally different show. so, we are missing out, really, on the spectacularness of this. we will have a partial, just make sure you got the proper rated glasses if you are going to look up. look at the warm up. we will be back in the lower 80s. thursday, friday of next week with the temperatures and plenty of sunshine throughout the whole thing. that is a great looking seven-day forecast. when you look at the weekend it is, we have not warmed up yet. still have to do 60s. not getting back in spring for the weekend. we are not getting rained on. there are 80s coming. >> we are excite about it. needing the rain. >> thank you very much, after the

. until april 10th muslims around the world are gathering each day to observe the month of-ramadan. prayers look a little different this year. we went to burlingame to see how the war effected their prayers

>> they are phobe using their prayers on one main thing, peace. -- focusing their prayers on one main thing, peace. >> reporter: it is a timeless tradition, breaking the fast each day with a date and a glass of water. community volunteers prepare this for anyone that comes through. one of the mosque's faith leaders says the month long celebration is not complete without the joy of community connection. >> fasting person has several moments of joy. one of them is when you break the fast. celebration can not be done at individual it is a congregation. >> reporter: as the congregation gathers and prepares for the meal, this year's prayers have been focusing on peace and relief in gaza where the world health organization says a famine, due

to the israel-hamas conflict is imminent. >> our prayers. giving them the patience, gives them the strength. gives them the food, the shelter, the security that they need. >> reporter: security issues in israel and palestine bled into the united states. hate incidents targeting jews and muslims or those appearing muslim increased dramatically. according to the antidefamation league and the council on american islamic relations. that is why rami says positive community engagement paired with prayer is important now more than ever. >> the silver lining to that is when there is backlash or attacks on our community that is when you see our community the strongest. if it is our global community with our, you know, muslims who are suffering throughout the world in gaza and sudan and other places we are making prayers for them nightly. it is an important part of our faith to keep peace

and protect people. >> as ramadan festivities continue. the youth of the foundation are preparing gifts for local children in need. maya, one of the youth volunteers says it encourages a spirit of gratitude. >> it is always special. it brings people together. it is a time for reflection and really reconnecting. >> reporter: as they reconnect with their faith through prayers, fasting and meals he hopes the holiday will be a reminder of other communities of faith that regardless of what is happening in the world, interfaith harmony is possible >>and they can coexist. >> the kind of co existence the community is hopeful for. coming up after the break, we are looking back at 154

. a beautiful sunset. they are celebrating their 144th anniversary all weekend long. golden gate park is a place where people can come together in the most challenging and heartbreaking moments. things like the national aids quilt and memorial in 1985 when thousands of deadheads flooded the park for the wake of the front man jerry garcia. enjoying green outdoor spaces and remind everyone visiting it is bigger than the cross-country counterpark, central park, the go to spot for the biggest celebrations in the city. outsidelands and music festivals or the annual 4/20 on hippy hill that was canceled this year. thanks for watching. we will see you back here at 11:00.
