people in oakland show their support for a local business, as shopowners deal with a wave of recent break-ins. a workers killed by an israeli airstrike in gaza. the bay area chef who works with world central kitchen and world -- war zones is remembered. >> his loss is a loss for not only what central kitchen but the planet. it is a true tragedy. strachan morning. thank you for starting your day with us. today is sunday, april 7th. i am max darrow. we start with a parking battle in san francisco. a few years ago, the sfmta said they would start to getting people if cars parked in the driveway were blocking the sidewalk , like you see. it has not been enforced, up until now. as amanda hari shows us the issue has some neighbors turning on each other.

>> reporter: people in these neighborhoods say they have been parking like this for years. and suddenly they are seeing sfmta issue citations. the issue is what you see here. cars parked in short drivers, forcing them to spillover, into the sidewalk and then people have to walk around them. to get by. >> i was thinking about, am i going to, you know, wake up with a ticket? >> reporter: david regularly house it's in the interest sunset and he says he is a neighborhood group message and people have been talking about an uptick in citations for cars parked in their own driveways. the offense listed on the ticket, blocking part of the sidewalk. he has parked sideways like this for years, leaving room for pedestrians, but now he is concerned that may not be enough . >> this is my electric car and i parked here because the charger is on the side. so i can run a line here to charge

my car. if i parked it out there, the line would be on the sidewalk and i don't want people to be tripping. >> reporter: throughout the inner sunset neighborhood, dozens of cars are hanging over the sidewalk. someone who lives in the richmond district took 2x to complain about the citation saying they had parked that way for years. the sfmta responded saying, not being cited before, is not a guarantee you will not be cited in the future and there is a recent effort to better address sidewalk parking in the city. near ninth avenue and moraga street, a sign asking people to not call the department of transportation , to ticket cars parked in driveways. it suggests leaving a note, asking someone to park differently. >> i think, us in the neighborhood should be more friendly to our neighbors. and i think it does not have to go for the kill. maybe just kind of talk to the person. >> reporter: linda does not

have a car, but lives in the neighborhood and frequently walks her dog harrison. she says, she sees cars spilling into the sidewalk all the time and it could cause issues. >> when we walk in a group we go to meet our friends. to walk our dogs together and you go around and you end up in the street. i mean, it is a pain sometimes. >> reporter: she said she is able-bodied and usually just walking her dog. but for others it could become dangerous. >> i think that would be a bigger issue if i had kids and try to get a group of children and you don't want to cross into the street to get around a car. >> reporter: he said he thinks the law needs to be enforced on a case-by-case basis. >> things need to make sense. regulations and rules to make sense of something. if a rule does not make sense anymore , then why should there be a rule? and i think what makes sense is people with strollers and dogs not being able to pass through, and i think there should be enough space.

>> reporter: for now, people in these neighborhoods say they will continue to try to come up with creative solutions to avoid being cited in the future. here is another practice that the mta will soon start cracking down on in san francisco. right turns on red lights. they plan on expanding the rule to all intersections highlighted on your screen and you can see there are a lot of them. in downtown , soma, chinatown and north beach, specifically. the city said it is want to make crosswalk safer. the group called, wakesurf , said 17 people were killed while walking in san francisco last year. and pedestrians accounted for 65% of all traffic related fatalities. >> at the 50 intersections where implementing no turn on red in 2021, 92% of drivers complied with the no turn on red signs. this works incredibly well . our status quo is dangerous and deadly. >> if it works from a traffic standpoint you can make the right turn easily and be on your way. it is obviously more

efficient and faster. >> this project is an extension of mtas tenderloin areawide no turn on red program. it is cold sunday morning but not as cold as we have been. numbers are a little warmer and we did not have to have any frost advisories, at least the national weather service did not issue any. interestingly enough, there is a weak weather system just sitting off the coast. maybe some light showers but it is later today, once we get into the afternoon we may see a few more develop over the mountains. we will look at that, coming up. it is not a widespread chance of rain today just a very limited part , particularly north bay mountains. with a few clouds for the rest of us, look at your day. sunday, low to mid 60s for daytime highs. those numbers will look dramatically different by the middle of this week. we have a big warm-up coming our way. see you in the full forecast in just a bit. a police chase on highway 101 in petaluma led to a

hazmat situation this weekend. police say this happened after the driver took the petaluma boulevard north exit going more than 100 miles an hour, hit the barrier and rolled over the ramp . for the electric car spewed a couple dozen batteries across the roadway. police say they were on fire. some even exploded. this happened on saturday morning before 8:00 and police decided they would leave the car in the standing water where it landed until it could safely be towed away. the driver of the car suffered only minor injuries. san francisco police arrested a man suspected of shooting and killing someone at a barbershop near mission and 20th around 1:30 friday afternoon. sfpd said they found 31-year-old alexander martinez in richmond at around 10:00 p.m. on friday. police have not released any information about the victim or a motive . the board of supervisors president aaron peskin held his first rally for mayor on saturday in chinatown. he said he will be more hands-on and accountable to every day san francisco. >> while i thankfully don't have any alien is on my side, i have you. and i ask you to

join with me to fight with me, to save our city , without sacrificing our values. >> he officially entered the race friday , joining the list of candidates challenging mayor london breed this fall. other major challenges include supervisor cautious of food, former mayor mark farrell and philanthropist daniel lurie. chp is looking for two young boys who went missing in mountain view last night. the agency says they were last seen on montecito avenue near stevenson elementary school. mountain view police say taylor we took the two boys , in a blue 2018 ford escape with this license plate, from missouri. daniel is nine and david is four. to open this morning where a business hit with a recent break-in held a community event, thinking customers on saturday and doubling down on its commitment to stay in the town. this is surveillance

footage from easter morning when someone broke the glass door and stole merchandise from the shop. the owner tells da lin she will not let thieves on her of the city. >> reporter: a dj and live jazz music to set the mood. the business owner said despite the public safety challenges, oakland is still worth fighting for. a warm and supportive crowd shopping at the taylor j clothing store on saturday afternoon. it is a big contrast to this video taken on easter sunday. when a thief ransacked the downtown broadway store. >> this is ridiculous. it is easter. i was angry and upset and we are done and we will go somewhere else. my original thought. >> reporter: she said that the stick about $20,000 in merchandise and the ipad used to collect credit card payments. she said it was especially painful because they

do so many community events and invest so much in oakland. >> we have our own in-house factory. we make all the clothes. it is designed and made in oakland. >> reporter: what happened after was reminding her why she set up shop in the first place. the people. neighbors, emailed her positive messages and some even donated to her gofundme. >> we have people send us an ipad. the love is so real . it is amazing. >> reporter: instead of running away from the problem, taylor will be stay and be part of the solution. many businesses have already closed down, siding crime. >> we will not allow a few bad apples to ruin this amazing bowl of fruit that oakland has. >> reporter: held this event on saturday, to thank neighbors and customers. it was also away she said, to remind others to support all of the small businesses in the city. as many are struggling with lower foot traffic due to crime. >> be very conscious of your dollars and what you spend them. keep the money in oakland. keep your support in oakland. i know it is so easy to go online or go out of town.

fight against it. >> reporter: her customers agree saying the health of the city is tied to the success of small businesses. >> if we all want to be part of this collective, we all have to play our part in making sure we are keeping them going but also , i think a wake-up call to the city to really think about what is going on. >> reporter: oakland police report in the first three months this year, burglaries went down 45% , compared to last year. but robberies went up, 35%. >> it is challenging right now but i don't think it is over for oakland. we have to stand strong it will take everyone's effort. >> reporter: as they say, it takes a village. taylor jay as well this is a customers are doing their part, elected leaders have to step up and do more to improve public safety. 6:11 on the sunday morning. coming up, an outbreak of multiple wildfires prompt a state of emergency declaration for parts of oklahoma. what

welcome back. the time is 6:13 on the sunday morning. taking a live look outside at the san francisco city lights shining bright. looking off into the east bay. thank you for staying with us. excitement is building for the upcoming total solar eclipse that is happening on monday. we will not get to experience totality in the bay area, but we still will need the same kind of eye protection as everybody else . the san jose public library is giving out free solar eclipse glasses at all 25 of its locations to make sure people can enjoy our partial eclipse here safely. the library also planning eclipse events for kids tomorrow and throughout the day.

here is a look at the path of totality. it is 130 miles wide, stretches from southern texas up through maine. an estimated 31.6 million americans will experience total darkness at some point throughout the day. as you might expect there is a high demand for the eclipse glasses. american paper optics, the country's largest producer of eclipse glasses, expects to crank out nearly 75 million pairs that will be delivered to fit in states by monday morning. when we will not be seeing totality in the bay area , we still do have a good chance of seeing a partial solar eclipse . the partial eclipse happening on monday will be similar to the one we saw back in 2017. the eclipse will start around 10:14 in the morning and it will reach maximum partial eclipse at 11:13 a.m. the eclipse is suspected to last for a total of two hours. monday will be our last chance to experience a solar eclipse for some time in our own backyard. up until the year 2045. check out our eclipse watch on monday, starting at 10:00 a.m. kpix.com and streaming on the

cbs news app and on pluto tv. we are watching some light showers that are drifting off the coast this morning and they don't have a chance to get any rain onshore for the bay. if we look at the big picture for the afternoon, now we see where the next chance of rain shows up . north bay, a few isolated showers will crop up over the higher elevations. that could even show up over the south bay. there will not be a lot to this. these are showers that will need the mountains for the added lift, assist, to get going. the majority of us should not notice them at all and we will look for a relatively clear sky. look at the beautiful sunset as we get into 6:00 at 7:00 tonight. perfectly clear. let's play this ahead to monday morning at 11:00. why? because at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow the partial eclipse will be occurring and it will reach its maximum for us at 11:13, which is not much. a partial eclipse . you may not notice a lot. it will

be happening at 11:13 and we will have clear skies. nothing overhead . if we look at the rest of the country, you can see where the path of totality is. that narrow strip is only 100 miles wide from side to side. you have to be in a real narrow limited ribbon to be able to catch the total solar eclipse. if we superimpose tomorrow's weather on top of that, this will be a bit tricky. there will be a line of showers right at the time, kind of extending through taxes and plenty of clouds, extending up through the midwest and the northeast. there will be gaps and there will be plenty of people who get a clear show but it will also be hit and miss for a large part of the country tomorrow in terms of visibility. unfortunately, clouds get in the way. let's come back home. here is our forecast for sunday. we are in the low 60s today. we are still coming in a little below average and we have not started the big warm-up yet and just

for comparison, let's take a look at what thursday will look like. watch the day change and watch the colors really change. and that is your forecast for thursday. quite a difference. lot of these numbers as much as 20 degrees warmer, getting us into the low admitted he then we will be in the mid 60s along the coast so we don't warm-up significantly. if you are inland, you will. everyone will notice the change, especially the inland east bay valleys. to see if there is any chance for rain over the next couple of days. there really isn't. when we look at the seven-day forecast for at least the next seven, with the exception of this week system today with showers off the coast and maybe a few showers in the local hills, there is nothing. but that warm up. san francisco gets today to the low to mid 70s. by wednesday we are near 80 in the north bay. we will make it to the low to mid 80s for san jose. and will we

finish up our microclimates we can see the inland east bay and we will also make it up into the low 80s for daytime highs by the time we get to wednesday and thursday. of this coming week. wildfires are moving through western oklahoma . so far, it wildfires reported across six different counties prompting a state of emergency. two firefighters were injured while battling one of the largest fires in woodward county. evacuation orders were issued for some towns in that county, but were later lifted. emergency personnel said fires in previous years made the response more effective for them now. the state has requested government assistance to help reimburse counties for the cost of the fires. a utility company has shut off power to 55,000 people in colorado due to high winds. this is the first time that xcel energy has done this in the state. the shutoffs began at 3:00 p.m. local time on saturday in six different counties. expected to last until the least noon today. xcel energy officials said they are trying to prevent wildfires beings parked by company equipment. the national weather service in windsor colorado have been recorded at over 90 miles an hour. firefighters are

the warriors are back home after playing seven of the last eight games on the road. the plan to rest steph curry on sunday against utah. golden state could clinched a playoff spot with a win. let's go to baseball. giants hosting the padres saturday. duval bringing his son to the mound to throw out the first pitch and honestly, that might have been better than fred warner's. no more fred warner jokes. on opening day , he threw it. loaded the bases in the first and made the padres pay. a grand slam into the arcade. giants were down 4-0 before they came to bat. they could not get anything going against michael king. he threw seven scoreless innings. the giants had only four hits and all singles and were shut up for the first time the season.

padres win, 4-0. >> the a's enjoying their time at an actual big league park before they moved to sacramento. he had fun in motown. he belted his second home run of the series. oakland jumped out to a 2-0 lead in this one. and that would be plenty for paul blackburn. he tossed six shutout innings and has 13 straight without a run. oakland won two games this year, both started by blackburn. the a's beat the tigers in the 4-0. perdue back in the final four for the first time since 1980 taking on tj burns and nc state. our producer, justin williams, a wolf pack alone made the trip to glendale. nc state's other dj, he had a going in the first half and scored 13 of his 20 points to keep the pack close but the boilermakers used a 14-1 run to pull away in the second half. player of the year led the way with 20 points and 14 rebounds.

from cbs news bay area , this is the morning edition. welcome back. it is 6:30, on the sunday morning. thank you for joining us. i am max darrow. we begin this half hour with the israel-hamas war. tens of thousands of antigovernment protesters took to tel aviv streets to call on prime minister benjamin netanyahu to step down from office. protesters scuffled with police as they took people away.

protesters were chanting and yelling and holding signs, all as the war in gaza enters its sixth month. netanyahu's government has faced various protests in israel , demanding a deal to free the rest of the hostages. that hamas has. bradley blackburn joins us live . today marks six months since of this were really got underway. and calls for no do not use resignation are getting louder. >> they are, max. six months into the conflict israel is facing the question of whether it's strongest ally, the united states is losing patience over the humanitarian situation in gaza. and among israeli citizens, there is intense frustration that there is still no deal to release all of those remaining hostages. >> reporter: on the streets of tel aviv, thousands gathered saturday night, demanding the release of israeli hostages and the resignation of prime minister benjamin netanyahu. >> we have to be a good country. a moral country.

>> reporter: netanyahu is under pressure at home and abroad. dozens of democratic congress members including former house speaker nancy pelosi have signed a letter urging the biden administration to reconsider sending billions of dollars in weapons to israel. and last week, in a tense phone call, president biden pressed netanyahu over the civilian toll and talk gaza. >> i asked them to do with the door. >> reporter: the hamas run health ministry said the death toll in gaza stands at more than 33,000. and many palestinians are on the brink of famine. last week, there was global outrage over an israeli attack on a world central kitchen humanitarian convoy traveling in gaza. the israeli military says it mistakingly believed militants were inside. seven aid workers were killed. >> this tragic mistake could and should have been prevented. >> reporter: six months after the hamas terror attack launched of the war, families are still waiting for their loved ones. this is really

mother 23-year-old daughter is being held hostage by hamas. >> we never believed it would take such a long time. >> reporter: president biden is sent cia director billboards to egypt to revive cease-fire talks that could release hostages. initiations are set to begin sunday. on saturday, it recovered the body of a 47-year-old farmer who was being held hostage in gaza. at least 36 of the hostages held by hamas have been confirmed dead. and families are worried the time is running out for remaining survivors . >> there are also concerns about the conflict spilling over into other parts of the middle east. what is the united states and about the potential for a threat from iran? >> cbs news is learned u.s. intelligence believes iran is preparing for a major attack , max. the exact target is not clear. iran has warned israel that all of his overseas are at risk. or under danger. but israel is reinforcing its air defenses for a potential swarm of drones and missiles. times

around the upcoming end of ramadan. this would be a retaliation for an israeli airstrike on the iranian consulate in damascus last week. >> thank you for your reporting. a bay area a worker said she is shocked after learning her friend was killed in last week's israeli airstrike in gaza. he was among those seven people killed while trying to bring food peoe in northern gaza on monday. i spoke with a san francisco woman who works with world central kitchen who described damian sobol as kind, a protector, a person to do good. and so much more. >> he was an extraordinary human being. >> reporter: that is how chef laura would like people to remember damian sobol. she volunteered alongside him for world central kitchen and europe on multiple humanitarian aid runs for people in ukraine. that was before his mission to gaza. before he and six other aid workers for world central

kitchen were killed in an airstrike that israeli military officials have since said was a grave mistake. >> disbelief. profound sadness. it is anger. it is all those emotions. and knowing someone so personally , it just hurts. >> reporter: she said the world central kitchen mission is simple, feed people in a. >> it does not matter what color you are a religion you are or what political leaning you have. it is all about feeding people in need and that is it. >> reporter: she said it workers know there are inherent risks with what they do. she says it is hard to explain what drives people to run into the fire rather than away from it, like damian sobol, to help those who need it most. it is a feeling , calling. >> it is something inside of you that says , you have to do it. >> reporter: israel's military said it misidentified an aide worker is a militant with a gun and mistakingly believed hamas militants were inside the world central kitchen vehicle. >> at the time, they were certain that they were

targeting hamas. this tragic mistake , could and should have been prevented. >> reporter: since the airstrike, israel's military has dismissed two officers. world central kitchen is calling for systemic change in israel's military , and for an independent commission to investigate the killings. >> i absolutely think there needs to be an independent investigation and i think they can get a hold of the footage from the drones, that will tell us a lot. >> reporter: as the world waits to see what happens next, she will continue to mourn the loss of a friend. >> his loss is a loss for not only world central kitchen but, the planet. it is truly a tragedy. >> reporter: one of seven heroes , in her eyes. >> they were just doing good. >> reporter: at a time when it is needed most. on capitol hill, the house of representatives is set to vote on a resolution that would support israel's right to

prevent ecological risks. the refinery normally produces about 6 million tons of oil per year. mexico has cut diplomatic ties with ecuador following what mexico calls a forced entry arrest at his embassy in ecuador's capitol. ecuadorian police broke through the doors of mexico's embassy on friday , to arrest a former ecuadorian vice president who had been there since december. he sought political asylum after being indicted on corruption charges. the raid prompted mexico's president to announce they are cutting ties. the office of the corridors president said they made the most cause he abused privileges . there is countries and diplomats have condemned the break-in. baltimore community members held a vigil on saturday for the six victims of the francis scott key bridge collapse. mexican, puerto rican and argentinian flags waved as mariachi music played. eight construction workers were filling potholes on the bridge when it was hit by a cargo ship

welcome back. it is 6:43 on the sunday morning. here is a live look at the golden gate bridge today. there are a few drivers going over the bridge. a beautiful look at the san francisco bay today. some drivers were free to move in and out of mixer again on saturday. caltrans resumed their convoys to get cars through a damaged area of highway one. drivers have been using convoys to move through highway 1 after a big storm last weekend knocked a piece of the road out into the ocean. rainy conditions have paused their convoys for about two days. whether did allow caltrans to reopen yesterday morning. it is still unknown when the pavement will be fully repaired. we are watching a few light showers that are drifting off the coast this morning and they don't have a chance to get any rain onshore for the bay but if we look at the big picture for the afternoon. now we see with the next chance of rain shows up. north bay, a few

isolated showers will crop up over the higher elevations. that could show up over the south bay. there will not be a lot to this. these are showers that will need the mountains for that added lift assist in order to even get going. and the majority of us should not notice them at all and we will look for the most part relatively clear skies . look at the beautiful sunset as we get into 6:00 or 7:00 tonight. let's play this ahead to 11:00 tomorrow. why? at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow the partial eclipse occurs and it will reach its maximum for us at 11:13 which is not much. a partial eclipse. you may not even notice a lot. but it will be happening at 11:13 and we will have clear skies them. nothing overhead for us. if we look at the rest of the country, you can see where the path of totality is. that narrow strip is only 100 miles wide from side to side. you have to be in a real narrow limited ribbon to be able to catch the total solar eclipse and if we superimpose

tomorrow's weather on top of that, this will be a bit tricky. there will be a line of showers right at that time extending up through texas and plenty of clouds extending up through the midwest and the northeast. there will be gaps in there will be plenty of people who get a clear show. but it is also going to be hit and miss for a large part of the country tomorrow in terms of visibility. unfortunately, clouds get in the way. let's come back home. here is a forecast for sunday. we are in the low 60s today, we are coming in a little below average and we have not started the big warm up yet and just for comparison, let's take a look at what thursday look like. i will get out of the way and watch the day change and watch the colors really change. and that is your forecast for thursday. what a difference. a lot of these numbers on here as much as 20 degrees warmer. getting us into the low and mid 80s, moving in the mid 60s along the coast we don't warm up significantly. but if you are inland, you will. you will notice the change, especially

the inland east bay valleys. just to see if there's any chance for rain, over the next couple of days, there really is not. and when we look at the seven-day forecast, for at least the next seven with the exception of this week system today, with showers off the coast and maybe a few showers in the local hills, there is nothing else. but that warm-up. san francisco even gets a day in the low to mid 70s. by wednesday. we will be near 80 in the north bay. we will make it to the low to mid 80s for san jose. when we finish up our microclimates we can see the inland east bay, will also make it to the low 80s for daytime highs by the time we get to wednesday and thursday. of this coming week. a major cleanup is underway after 1000 gallons of oil spilled into the bronx river. energy company, con edison, said the dielectric fluid that fell into a yonkers storm drain

in san rafael, a guide dog school for the blind celebrated its 1000th graduating class of canines in california. the graduating dogs had a chance to meet their new caretakers for the first time. guide dogs for the blind is the largest school of its kind in north america with more than 16,000 dog teams of graduates in the u.s. since its founding in 1942. mexico has officially declared 19 cats roaming the presidential palace, as living fixed assets. normally that term would apply to buildings and furniture , but by applying

for. antigovernment protesters in israel took to the streets of tel aviv to call for the resignation of prime minister benjamin netanyahu. here at home, democrats are urging the biden administration to reconsider sending billions of dollars in weapons to israel. this comes after seven aid workers were killed in an israeli airstrike. israel's military has admitted he made a mistake, a serious error and has since dismissed two officers. quite the warm-up coming our way this week. we will be in the low to mid 60s today but you will be in the mid 70s, in san francisco. by the time we get to wednesday. microclimates the numbers better than that. look at the bottom line. san jose, 83 degrees. 63 in san jose today. 83 on wednesday. we will cool down after that as we head toward next weekend and into next weekend. this does not last terribly long but it will be very noticeable change coming right in the middle of this work week. we will not be breaking records, but we will be 10 to 15 degrees above average.
