double dogs. the uconn huskies clench the ncaa men's basketball championship for a second year in a row. magical moment. millions of americans watch in amazement as the solar eclipse turns daylight into darkness. but first, abortion back front and center in the presidential race. former president donald trump weighs in on the hot topic and draws fire from both sides of the aisle. good morning. i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. former president donald trump declined to throw his support behind a national abortion ban, saying the issue should be left up to the states, but that didn't sit well with some prominent members of his own party or the biden/harris campaign. cbs's jarred hill joins us now with more on this story. jarred, good morning. >> good morning, shanelle.

former president donald trump was given mixed signals, which is why this announcement was so anticipated. now some of his supporters are frustrated. >> reporter: this morning donald trump is facing backlash from his base. instead of supporting the federal ban, he's sending it to the states. >> at the end of the day, it's all about the people. >> reporter: trump, though, still boasting for appointing the supreme court justices who helped overturn the right to an abopgs. staunch trump ally senator lindsey graham in a rare public rebuttal posted he respectfully disagrees. the former president fired back writing graham is doing a great disservice to the republican party. marjorie dannenfelser is disappointed by the former president's decision. but after a phone call with trump yesterday she believes

that he could change his mind. >> i actually do think he will get there. >> reporter: president biden and vs. vice president harris made similar arguments yesterday. they vowed to support federal abortion rights. and hours afterward, president biden featured a new ad, saying a resulting infection may prevent her from getting pregnant again. >> and, jarred, there have been some developments in trump's legal cases. what can you tell us about those? >> there are two in particular. let's start with the federal election interference case. in this one, special counsel jack smith is respectfully urging the supreme court to reject trump's claims of immunity. even if the court finds he has some immunity, it was outside of the duties of his offices. they say the justices could decide on that one by june. and then in trump's new york

hush money case yesterday, a judge rejected the former president's attempts to delay the trial while he tries to get the case moved out of manhattan with somewhat of a potentially more favorable jury pool. that trial is sets to start on monday, at least as of now. overseas now, hamas is responding to israel's latest proposal for a cease-fire and hostage release deal. the terrorist group says it does not meet their demands, but that they would study it and get back to the mediators. as for the fighting, prime minister benjamin netanyahu says they will go ahead and enter rafah, and they have a date. cbs's holly williams has more on this from the ground in gaza. >> reporter: with most israeli forces now gone from the southern gaza strip, a cbs news team was there as thousands of palestinians moved around freely for the first time in months. in the city of khan younis, they found destruction on a colossal scale.

some went looking for their homes and instead picked through rubble for their belongings. i couldn't find my bed or my clothes, said malak mahmoud. i lost my books. israel's military says it now has just one division inside the gaza strip. the other division that was there moved out over the weekend. the remaining troops are positioned along the border of gaza with israel and to the north where the israelis have built a new road, cutting across the gaza strip from east to west, thought to be part of israel's planning for after the war. israel says the troops who pulled out are recuperating, and prime minister benjamin netanyahu said they've set a date for an offensive in the southern city of rafah despite u.s. opposition, though, that date is unspecified. it comes just days after

president biden told benjamin netanyahu in a phone call the humanitarian situation in gaza was, quote, unacceptable. israel says over 400 aid trucks made it into gaza, the most since the beginning of the war. aviv, israel. turning now to the rare cosmic spectacle that captured america, the solar eclipse. did you see it as the moon slipped between the earth and the sun, turning day into night? here's one view you might most likely did not see, at least firsthand, the view from space. that's the moon's shadow. about 31 million people in 15 states live in the eclipse's pacts of totality, and millions more traveled to catch a glimpse of this event.

norah o'donnell traveled to indianapolis to catch a glimpse of this. >> reporter: awe in the afternoon. we were watching along with 50 million others as darkness swept over everyone and everything at the indianapolis motor speedway. >> the tv doesn't do it justice. >> no, it doesn't. >> it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience. >> reporter: a total solar eclipse, the moon having its moment in the sun, blocking all but a fiery halo of light. >> you've seen how many? >> seven. i've hit seven. >> how does it compare? >> each one is different. >> reporter: it turned eyes to the skies. some waiting years to experience this rare moment. thousands of spectators in mazatlan, mexico, were the first to experience the eclipse. the path of totality started in eagle pass, texas,

just before 1:30 p.m. local time, casting a shadow nearly 100 miles wide, moving across 15 states in just over an hour. for those outside of that path, a partial eclipse was visible throughout all 48 contiguous states. in some parts of the country, the forecast called for clouds, but then the cosmic clearing. >> oh, my goodness. the clouds parted. the clouds parted. i cannot believe we're seeing this right now. it's been cloud cover all day. how lucky are we? >> reporter: at 30,000 feet eclipse viewing soared to new heights aboard special delta flights from dallas and houston. nearly 200 passengers snacked on sun chips and moon pies. >> it was really cool being all daylight and all of a sudden it got pitch black and felt like night.

>> reporter: but russellville, arkansas, has to be the icing on the cake, with over 50 couples professing their love to the moon and back, taking their wedding vows in a mass ceremony, the thin circle of life around the moon resembling a golden wedding ring but in the sky. >> this is really cool, a once-in-a-lifetime thing. >> reporter: norah o'donnell, cbs news. and things are looking pretty bright on the campus of university of connecticut. the huskies won their second straight ncaa basketball game last night, defeating purdue, 75-60. it's the first time to be repeat champions in 17 years. >> what could you say? we won. it's the best two-year run, i think, in a very, very long time just because of everything we lost from last year's team. >> and the victory marked connecticut's record 12th straight double-digit win in the ncaa tournament dating back to last year.

it's also the sixth national championship in the school's history. sunday's ncaa women's title game between south carolina and iowa scored big among tv viewers. it had an audience of 18.7 million viewers, the most ever for a women's college basketball game. it was also the most watched basketball game, men or women, college or pro in the last five years. the only games to bring in a bigger audience in 2019 were football, world cup, and olympics. the naia's council of presidents approved the new rules in a 20-0 vote. it's believed to be the first college organization to take such a step. it allows all athletes to take part in male sports. this takes effect in august.

law team, husband and wife, were killed in their offices. they were identified as attorney dennis price and his wife ashley. price was there representing his wife in a deposition against the ex-husband when the ex-husband's father, attorney joe houston, allegedly shot them. police say houston then took his own life. "the tampa bay times" says a woman shot at cars on a florida highway because of the solar eclipse. authorities say the 22-year-old woman in georgia checked out of a hotel yesterday and told staff she was going on a shooting spree directed by god because of the eclipse. they say she shot and injured two drivers on interstate 10 in the florida panhandle. state troopers stopped her vehicle and found an ar-15 rifle and a handgun. she was arrested on several charges including attempted murder. and the "detroit free press" reports on today's scheduled sentencing for the first parents
