when you winning were you inspired. >> it was fun when i was winning. >> but i have some bruises on the rear end from hitting the bumps on the way down the bracket. that's okay. >> congratulations to liz cook. >> voodoo magic athink. >> amazing. >> all right. let's take a live look outside on this tuesday morning. the fun just continue because we get a live look at the ferris wheel. this is how you start a tuesday. jessica. it's clear outside and will it stay clear and a litment suntan today. ooh yes, absolutely. i was not even thinking about that till now but yes, suntan day indeed. quick look at what's going on. we're expecting clear skies this afternoon and waking up to clear conditions right now just into the santa clara valley and over the bay bridge you can see behind me. now as we take a quick look at the clear conditions it's not going to last for too much longer weekend. the weekend forecast, we have big changes. a cold front is on the way in and timing this cold front out, it's going to be very interesting because it will be

leading up into the weekend forecast once again. but take a look at this. dry days for us today and tomorrow and lasting into thursday. once we head into friday evening a cold front approaches in from the north and that's going to drop our temperatures down from 80s just by wednesday all the way into the 50s heading into this weekend. so a big change not only with rain and wind, but we're also going to see some gusty conditions too. more about that coming up in just a bit. another thing i want to mention though, it is allergy season still. and we're in the medium to high category until friday. before that cold front moves its way in. when it comes to our pollen count and just take it slow out there. and give yourself that extra water and that extra loving care if you start to notice your allergies kicking in. now we are going to keep a close eye on that and talk more about the rainfall too. because great news, above average throughout most of the bay area with the exception of the east bay but the system that's moving in this weekend could really help out that number at 98% already which isn't bad. but we can get a little bit closer to 100% of average right around the corner. now over to you, nicole. all right, thank you, jessica. not much going on this

morning on the freeways as we start by taking a live look at the golden gate bridge. looks empty here. we'll see a car or two drive by every couple of minutes. but it is an easy drive coming in from marin county into the city. over at the bay bridge now, metering lights are off for now. definitely a bit more cars there compared to the golden gate bridge. it shouldn't be an issue if you plan on going across within the next half hour. and how about a quick check over in hayward at the san mateo bridge? smooth conditions in both directions. so a nice drive to start this tuesday. reed? well, dozens of firefighters are watching for hotspots this morning following a raging fire at a warehouse in hayward. in fact look at this video. flames and smoke shooting orange and black into the night sky there. crews got the call just after 9:30 last night. as soon as they got to the building, the fight went into defense mode. their main focus was just to keep the fire from spreading to other buildings. but now hours later

at the aftermath. this is near hall road there and you can see the outside of that warehouse blackened there with the openings are where the flames shot out and it looks like they still have some smokecoming out of this. that's why you see firefighters there keeping watch on the left side of the screen all about keeping the hotspots mopped up. and the building we understand housed an insulation business. so far no word on the extent of damage. but luckily, no injuries were reported. crews they'll be there today to look into the cause of the fire. looking live over san francisco. since when did library employees need security guards just to get in a building full of books? safety is the demand of library workers fighting blight on city blocks and in response, there's a rally by public library employees today demanding safer streets outside of where they work. their complaint? they say drug addicts and homelessness right outside their doors makes the job of being librarianings unsafe. the rally starts at noon at san francisco's main library and we'll be there. after the death of an apple engineer and father of two in a

tesla at the 11th hour tesla agreed to settle a lawsuit over its self-driving technology. so here's the background of the case. walter wong died on highway 101 in 2018 when the model x slammed into a concrete median. the aftermath just devastating there. investigators from the national transportation safety board found the tesla was on autopilot for almost 20 minutes. tesla blamed driver claiming his hands were off the steering wheel for six seconds playing a video game on the phone. reportedly wong's family acknowledges he was distracted but they say tesla was at fault for saying it was self-driving software. no word on the terms of the settlement. get a good last look at this and other first republic banks. the "san francisco chronicle" reporting that first republic banks will cease to exist next month. last year chase acquired first republic one of three mid-sized bay area

banks to fail. chase bank says the remaining 62 first republic branches nationwide will close may 24th. 25 are likely close to where you live this morning. nicole? well, reed, sometimes we get lucky to share in an event that reminds us all where we are in the universe. people traveled far and wide to certain parts of the nation for front row seat to the solar eclipse. its path of totality didn't quite make it here to the bay but we definitely got the partial viewing. oakland's science center knows what it means to witness an eclipse like this. they held a viewing party on the campus for all to enjoy as you can see here. normally quiet on monday mornings, but yesterday, a sold out crowd filled the plaza all to see this breathtaking sight. and there were all sorts of devices to look up safely. like telescopes that removed 99.9% of light. that was outside. inside stunned visitors watched

the total eclipse being televised. >> feels so powerful. right? and feels magical almost. and the aura is really beautiful. >> i was just feeling lucky to be alive to see all this beautiful stuff. in this world. astronomers say this really is a lucky time for us. >> because the moon is slowly moving further away from earth and at the same time, the sun is getting bigger meaning we hit the sweet spot. meanwhile students and possible future scientists gathered at stanford. the smiles on the children's faces, the curiosity, physically sparking in their eyes. >> never seen an eclipse before. this is my first time in-person. >> what do you think? >> i think it's really cool. and i'm really excited. >> it looks so cool. how the -- how the moon is in the -- the moon is in the sun. >> the same excitement came

from students who want to make a living studying space. saying they hope people can stay inspired to learn more about planetary sciences. >> you know, i keep going back to the video out of mexico. look at this time lapse. as you saw during our live stream yesterday. mazz italian was the first stop in the path of totality when the eclipse hit its peak and so many people gathered there on the beach so excited. this in fact is another cool view that made history. the bloomington, indiana area where this shot looks like a plane flew right into the eclipse. check out the contrails from the airplane. such a cool sight and another history making move absolutely stunning. that was not brought to you by any airlines' marketing department. just a happy accident. to space itself for another view higher up above the thing that made millions look up. look at the right side of the screen. that's the view from the international space station. and that shows the moon's shadow making its way across north america. and if you want to relive the moments where the moon upstaged the sun in the bay area, our special coverage

san francisco. and a sobering reality. that's a view of the city from treasure island. lot of those office buildings you see are a headline this morning. according to a commercial real estate firm, 36% of the city's office space sits empty and unused. and that's an all-time high. you know, some blame the postpandemic rise of remote work. but mayor london breed wants to turn all that empty space into pretty much anything but offices. one small downtown business tells our kelsi thorud that can't happen fast enough. >> reporter: s ooh ge mediterranean has been here at the corner of pine and builden in the financial district since 2018. manager nancy madrigal says when they first snagged this location, they were exscattic. >> this is store number four. so it was pretty busy. >> reporter: nancy says they would have lines out the door during the weekday lunch rush but then of course, the

pandemic hit. >> it's definitely not the same as before. [ laughter ] >> reporter: nancy says even all these years later, since the peak of covid, the crowds just aren't coming back. >> out of the five days we might have two good days. >> reporter: sage isn't alone. so many businesses continue to struggle especially those downtown. the trend towards work from home has gutted many high-rises in the area. taking away a huge chunk of these restaurants' clientele. that is why mayor breed and several other city officials are pushing the state to pass laws that will make it easier to turn those vacant spaces into housing or other mixed use venues. president and ceo of the san francisco chamber of commerce rodney fong says he's fully on board with the mayor's vision. >> i think covid taught us not to necessarily put all of our eggs in one basket and san francisco has the luxury of being able to try to diversify itself which i think mayor by going to sacramento is trying

to do to expedite and create insentives for people to take chances and be creative in the great downtown. >> reporter: back at sage, nancy told me she too likes the idea of getting more people into downtown and just hopes those people will visit her restaurant as much as those did before. >> improving either housing or more work offices around the area will improve our business a lot. >> now taking a live look outside on this tuesday morning. you feeling in the mood for some jewelry, lead? look at today. ooh. it's beautiful out there. i can't say it enough. we are in for a good day today and jess we can't say the same for the friends in the south though. >> oh my gosh. check this out. what texas has been dealing all week is wild. the hail was coming down jed and the sky in mesquite, texas got pummeled while trying to throw a cover over his car, tornadoes and heavy winds were in the forecast all throughout the afternoon hours. and all that

storm and that storm actually is supposed to continue throughout the forecast today for them. there's likely even to be more hail and flooding as well. this is a sight to see. keep in mind, this was just yesterday as they were trying to see the path of totality for the solar eclipse. but instead, those were the skies that they were dealing with. let's head back to our skies real fast though. clear for us this morning. clear for us this afternoon. and we talked about this a little bit earlier but think it's worth noting a bit more right now as we take a look at the rainfall versus average for the season, as of this week, we're still sitting well above average when it comes to areas like san francisco and all the way up into santa rosa. thanks to a really heavy, wet season that we just got out of. and we're still seeing more rain actually and we're seeing a similar trend down into the santa clara valley. i'm actually very impressed and san jose sitting over 15 inches close to 16 and we're expecting more rain late this week as a cold front approaches but that cold front is not here just yet and thank goodness honestly. i mean we're talking about upper 60s today

near san francisco. 70s near oakland. and upper 70s all the way off near concord and antioch. now the thing that's interesting about the forecast for us heading into in next couple of days and i want to pull up the map and kind of explain this. that cold front is going to move in and we're all going to be sitting pretty much hand-in-hand in the 50s but for now you still see that very big temperature spread along the coast with low 60s near half-moon bay in the east bay where if you were to drive an hour, okay, with traffic let's be honest, like an hour 45. all the way into areas like antioch that's the temperature spread in the inland areas versus the coast. but down into the santa clara valley we go we're also in the upper 70s this afternoon and continue to warm up in the inland areas into the 80s as we head into our forecast tomorrow. lasting all the way into thursday. here's what's happening. high pressure is moving its way in. it's drying us up and it's warming us up and that's the case for us heading into in next couple of days. by friday though, that's when we're gearing up for the cold front. temperatures dip all the way

down into the 60s at that point and another ten degree drop on saturday. rainy skies and cooler temperatures and some gusty conditions ahead of it. we'll have more on that in a bit. for now over to you, nicole. >> all right. take overview look at the bay area roadways. not much happening so far this morning which is always nice to report. although a few trouble spots so far starting off on southbound 680 in pleasanton. we see some slow bumper-to-bumper traffic here. this is in the pocket and area even though there are not reports of a crash over here, so we'll check back in if this remains to be a hotspot this morning. and for supercommuters at the altamont pass, always a slow drive in on the early hours for those leaving tracy. so just plan accordingly as this will feel like a slow drive you see all the red there on the map. caltrans is expected to start emergency repairs today to that scenic stretch of highway 1 in big sur after a portion of the highway collapsed into the sea. crews plan to start drilling vertical anchors into the southbound lane of the highway near the

rocky creek bridge. a large chunk of the road crumbled into the ocean during heavy rains on easter weekend leaving more than 1,000 people stranded. no word on when the emergency repairs will be done. but a long-term fix could take years. caltrans is resuming their convoys to get people through the damaged area. time now 5:19. uconn is on top of the college basketball world. the amazing feat for the young men. and how did we finish in our brackets? we'll take

welcome back. looking live over at oracle park. the giants are ready to bounce back for game two against the houston -- washington nationals tonight. rookie lefty kyle harrison takes the mound against the nationals' gray and it should be an exciting match-up here. first pitch 6:45. fans got to see two-time cy young winner and one of the biggest off-season signings blake snell do his thing. out of the nine outs he got, five of them were strikeouts. it was a promising start for the all-star lefty. but unfortunately, he ran into trouble in the 2nd. back-to-back walks. a few mistake pitches down the middle got the ball rolling for washington and snell finished with 72 pitches through three innings and gave up three

earned runs. the giants' fence getting runners on base but following through to get them home. well, that was the tough part. 0-10 with runners scoring position. washington took the series opener 8-1. organization wants to make sure the a's stadium doesn't cross home plate. today is their day to get their say in court over $380 million public funding bill for the a's' new las vegas ballpark. essentially their argument is that the millions of dollars shouldn't go to a baseball park. but rather to students and spend it on education. the group is called schools over stadiums. that group lost the early court battle when the judge sided with the a's saying the petition left out some important details for potential signees to make an informed decision. so kind of a technicality there but for month since schools over stadiums has been trying to appeal the ruling today the organization has the chance to argue the decision. but they said if the original ruling is upheld, they've got backup

plans like a lawsuit declaring a bill that paved the way to passage of public money to help pay for the stadium unconstitutional. more to report there. you know who's especially steamed over the a's sin city move? a legend. we're talking about reggie jackson. the former a's' outfielder went on the show podcast to break down what he calls an embarrassment to major league baseball and listen to what reggie had to say. >> and so disappointed as to the way the family has -- the fisher family has interacted with the city. and just let the team go to shambles. i mean, they're -- a 4a team. they're not a major league team. they have abandoned the city. >> well, that is essentially what we're hearing from the fans as well. so it looks like reggie jackson is on the fan's side. >> it's really hard to move a professional baseball team into a minor league ballpark for several years. this is not like a temporary thing. i mean, this

is for what? three years until that ballpark is done. who knows when that ballpark is going to be done? hopefully they'll be like the raiders and they'll be on schedule. because as you know, the money -- but it's just so unfortunate i think for the fan base and for the players that are involved because you really do feel like you are taking a step back. >> i know they're already working on ticket sales and sales just the suites already on a ballpark that doesn't exist yet. all right, well, switch gears to men's college basketball. uconn became the first team to win back-to-back national championships since the florida gators did it. that was back in 2006 and '07. purdue's big man edey made some big moments count. he led all scorers with 37 points. but uconn's defensive prowess was on full display. huskies won every game in the tournament by more than ten points. including this one. 75-60 the final. with that said, let's look at the final results from our kpix tournament leader board. liz cook, how do you do it? no

bay area at 5:30.thank you so much for tuning in. this is a live look at the bay bridge out towards treasure island and then over the water to our friends in the east bay. good morning, everybody and what a day itbe like? >> very similar to yesterday. minus the partial eclipse of course. but -- as we extend into the afternoon a very similar daytime high setup and we're talking about upper 70s in our inland areas and 60s along the coast. and along the peninsula. and mostly clear skies which is just such a treat on a week like this. especially when it came to yesterday watching that partial eclipse. we're waking up to clear conditions down into the santa clara valley. taking quick look at the bay bridge right behind me from the rooftop cam. clear as can be. nothing bad going on there. but let's take a look into the rest of this week because we have some big changes and it has to do with another cold front. remember last week's cold front? we're getting pete of that the week and it's coming in from the exact same direction. the north. and that means we're going to see cooler temperatures and rainy skies associated with this system and that comes in late friday afternoon and lasting into our weekend forecast for saturday. luckily it looks like it's going the start clearing up as we head into our sunday evening forecast. timing this out on the rainfall chances, like i said, today, tomorrow, lasting into thursday and any outdoor activities you have going on it's a go. once we

head into the friday forecast lasting until sunday in the afternoon hours that's when we see the increased chances of showers in the forecast and it's worth mentioning also up until that point, we're still in the medium to high category for the pollen count. it's going to be dry out there. it was breezy yesterday and some gusty conditions in this afternoon. moving in from the north but there's still bigger changes right around the corner too. before we get to the cold front and we're pretty much all above average for the daytime highs. we're going to dive more into this in just a bit. for now over to you, nicole. metering lights will turn on in a few minutes although a bit busier than we last reported as you can see here. soon we're going to see just how built up it gets here when those lights do turn on. we'll check back in? our next report and we'll see here the commuters making their way from albany or in a second, there's your tease. we can see a bit of brake lights there. across the bay at the richmond-san rafael bridge, no delays here. looking westbound. it's quite clear going in both directions. so not bad if you plan to take

either of those two bridges for your morning commute. the israel-hamas war entering its seventh month now after hamas killed some 1200 people on october 7th and took hostages. that action prompted israel to strike back and as of this morning, leaders continue to wall for a ceasefire and release of all hostages. today vice president kamala harris will meet with families of americans taken hostage during the attack in israel and yesterday pope francis met with israelis who have loved ones still held somewhere in gaza. the pope is calling for an immediate ceasefire in the war. release of all hostages and full access operation to humanitarian aid. in gaza, israel's military has withdrawn from a place called con unis. palestinians returning there finding the city reduced to this. just

rubble. some bay area helpers seeing images like those and decided to get up and get on the plane and go to gaza to help. in fact, fairfax nurse sandra alder shared with our jose martinez what she saw during her two week visit to that neighborhood. >> reporter: sandra adler is back to her day job as an emergency room and pediatric nurse for kaiser permanente east bay after completing a two week mission in gaza. >> i feel like what we did with the band-aid, even, you know, saving hopefully saving lives, but, you know, in the bigger picture, again, it was just a tiny drop. and of what we could accomplish in the two weeks that we were there. >> reporter: she tells me she and her team saw more than 150 patients a day. during her time in southern gaza. the work was difficult. >> we were at a trauma stabilization point in con unis. and working with a lot of

mass casualty incidents. lot of pediatric trauma. >> reporter: so was getting to gaza in the first place. her journey started in germany with training on how to work in a hostile environment. and from there? >> we went to cairo. where we procured some additional supplies. medical equipment. we brought 32 crates with us of mostly medical supplies. and medicine. and spent about a ten hour trip getting todd border and crossing over and then getting to our home base in rafah. >> reporter: sandra is no stranger to this type of work. she's been in disaster zones in places like syria, mexico, and panama. but says this deployment was the toughest. >> the artillery fire that we heard definitely increased over time. i'd say the last five days it was coming closer to rafah but consistently through my time there, we heard shelling. >> reporter: she says one of

the dearest memories is this picture. with nana. a little girl who visited her brother every day while he was receiving medical attention, but the saddest one was -- >> leaving my colleagues there you know, that here i knew the whole time that i had a way out. but this is -- a situation that, you know, they can't leave. you know. this is a situation that they're enduring day after day after day. >> so sandra worked with the nonprofit emergency response organization called kades to get into gaza. this was her 12th humanitarian mission and she says she'd like to go back if and when she can. we're keeping a close eye on the race for the 16th congressional district in silicon valley and today's the deadline for any voter to request a recount in the race. which we may see. considering the two second place candidates ended up in a tie. well, we know former san jose mayor sam liccardo is heading to

package of bills targeting the fentanyl crisis and retail crime called working together for a safer california. looking live at oakland now. secretary of health and human services javier becerra is on the way for the national latino health tour. he is calling for inclusion in clinical trials and expanding health care to -- mend decades -- [ inaudible ] meanwhile. could oakland sued by san francisco in it's a big question this morning. san francisco attorneys sent a strong message trying to stop the rebranding plans by the airport. the port commission over there will vote this week on a proposal to add san francisco bay to the oakland airport's name. not so fast says san francisco. saying that that change amounts to trademark infringement and could confuse travelers who think they're going to one place and could be somewhere else. a lot of people making statements on both sides. the port of oakland blamed a lack of geographical awareness for

the airport's struggles in getting new routes and it added the new name would bring more flights that would benefit the entire region. a recently settled class action lawsuit by the national association of realtors. that's raising some questions about how it will impact the housing market. kenny choi explains how the industry navigates this big shift. >> reporter: harry has been searching to buy a family home for the first time. and learning a lot about the process along the way. >> patience you know. and it's -- it's kind of terrifying when you see these home prices and you got to be really strategic about how you choose things. >> reporter: he is renting in san francisco and works in tech. he started the journey with his agent before new rules are slated to be in effect in july. they include requiring a buyer and agent to negotiate and sign a commission rate agreement before the search even begins. >> it just seems like it would put a higher burden of proof on

the realtor to show their potential clients they're really good before really showing them you know, what it's going to be like and show their abilities at that moment. >> reporter: michael is co-founder of north point real estate. and is representing aer. he's also the listing agent for the telegraph hill condo. the traditional model has been to include 5% to 6% commission to be split between a seller's agent and buyer's agent with a seller paying the cost after the deal closes. >> the main challenge i'm seeing will be be able to communicate the value i provide as a buyer's agent up front? >> reporter: the new model will allow sellers to opt out of paying the commission for the buyer's agent but that doesn't mean all realtors will do that. >> having a well represented buyer in a transaction is often at the seller's advantage to getting to the closing table. >> reporter: many including michael believe offering to pay the buyer's agent even after the new rules kick in could attract more buyers and

later this week. starting off down into the santa clara valley and off in the east bay. it's going to be warmer than yesterday and in the upper 70s from antioch and livermore. upper 70s near los gatos over into san jose. where we're already starting off with some clear conditions this morning. it is beautiful down into the santa clara valley. as we wake up head out the door, the sun is about to rise and goodness gracious such a nice day. what's happening right now is high pressure is sitting just offshore and we're dealing with dry conditions this afternoon. we talked about it a red light l bit earlier. there's some issues with the pollen rock we're in the medium to high category. if you are sensitive to allergies like i am just take it slow out there. throughout the next couple of days we're going to continue the see medium to high conditions until friday. and the reason why is because we actually have a really wet system right around the corner that's moving its way in from the north. and this is just like last week's cold front that moved its way in. it's bringing in plenty of rain for us here in the bay area. as we head into our friday forecast. here we go dipping all the way down into friday. lasting into saturday and a little bit of sunday too as it kind of sits just offshore. of central california. continuing to roll in more showers for us all the

way into our sunday forecast. in total right now our long-range models, the gfs ensemble is showing a half inch of rain expected from this just about and that's important to note too. we were taking a lot this morning about where we're at for the rainfall season so far and many of us in the bay for example santa rosa stretching down into san jose all above average already with the exception of the east bay. but we're at 98% for the east bay anyway. so regardless, we're going to be seeing more rain in the forecast for us and i'm going to dive that more in just a second. the temperatures today are also sitting above average anywhere throughout the bay area. whether you live along san francisco or the inland areas. the inland areas real fast, let's dive into the forecast for us this week. i kind of got ahead of myself. cold front this friday and saturday but before that it's going to be nice for us. really not until friday we need to start thinking ahead because by saturday heading into sunday yeah the showers are going to be lingering around: nicole? all right, thank you, jess. plan on taking the altamont pass, headed towards the bay
