>> a member of the bee hive. really all of that chat a little bit in the morning but first of all live outside and climb to the top of the mark. open up the windows and see what the friday is offering us. that's just another postcard view of this beautiful bay area and san francisco in particular. let's talk to jess right now about what the weekend forecast will be. ooh. it's not that bad this morning. but boy is it going to look different right around the corner and by the way i thought it was beyhive. not beehive. let's wake up all the way down into the santa clara valley. clear conditions. i'm going to show you the daytime highs in just a bit. boy, it's a will the cooler today compared to just the past few days where we had 80s in the inland areas and upper 60s lower 70s along the coast. now here's the reason why we have such big changes in the forecast late tonight. we have an area of low pressure adopting down along the california coastline as we head into this afternoon. and taking a look at that storm system that will continue to bring in cool temperatures and rainy

skies and some gusty conditions for us starting late tonight and early morning hours tomorrow. so let's time that out this morning because right now we have the blanket of clouds kind of sweeping throughout the bay area. sustained winds moving in from the north from offshore and continue to watch that into the lunchtime hour. cool day for us today especially compared to yesterday. now is the time to prepare. grab the jacket but ditch the umbrella and here's why. the rain system doesn't initially impact the bay area until 10:00 tonight. ten the system continues to build in from offshore wrapping the peninsula just around 1:00 a.m. for saturday. here we go with some heavier rain that starts to develop in the peninsula into the 4:00 a.m. hour tomorrow. then we watch that move off into the east with heavy showers snow up in the higher elevated areas like mount tam and mount hamilton and potentially mount diablo too and that will continue to move off to the sacramento valley and the sierra giving them plenty of snow. more about the rest of the storm coming up in just a bit. reed?

chp sending out sig alert because of a crash on southbound 8808 in hayward. all lanes currently blocked due to the rolled everyday vehicle and emergency responder are out and helping on the scene. we understand there are injuries so our best thoughts with everybody out on the roads this morning. only opened about 30 minutes ago and one of the freeways headed towards the san mateo bridge. it is pretty clear if you are going westbound 92 towards highway 101. no delays other than that freeway closure. so if you are coming in from 880 or a detour you are going to have no issues getting across the bridge right now in that particular area. well, this morning, rescuers at the russian river face a ticking clock and searching for a child believed swept away in the springtime waters. this has been a long flight for a familyho called in around 5:00 lastight reporting two missing children in the watersin forestville. another child believed to be about 10 years old is still missing as the family waits at the water's edge. we can tell you the water high and it's

moving fast. and the river underneath that surface is full of debris and that makes the search extremely dangerous. as the morning progresses, our thoughts and our news team's full attention will be on the family and the first responders who are out there searching for life at this very moment. hey, a follow-up to a big community story pitting east bay to the city of san francisco. after a unanimous vote to add san francisco bay to the name of the oakland airport, the city of san francisco confirms they're going to sue to stop that renaming effort. oakland's port commission says the goal is to help travelers realize oakland is in the bay area. san francisco says the change is trademark infringement. so the fight is on and it's all set up. and so is the question, does a lawsuit by san francisco really have any teeth or legal traction? the port commission doesn't seem to think so. sfo can't lay claim to the term stance let alone claim exclusive rights to san

francisco bay. they said they'll do everything they can to ensure clarity for travelers and where oak h is the airport code is. now this. i'm not shedding any tears. >> definitely devastated that had he passed away. >> that's a range no tears to devastation. there you have it. reactions over oj dying split. even beyond the grave. the acquitted double murder suspect and often in scandal o.j. simpson continues to divide us as we look back at the san francisco native's complicated legacy. he lived his final years in sin city and died of prostate cancer at the age of 76 according to his family. they say they were around him when he died. this was the moment here in 1994 when the heisman trophy winning running back's achievement went up in flames. following the brutal slayings of his ex-wife and her friend, 95 million people watched this slow moving police chase of simpson's white ford

bronco on the los angeles freeway. >> with the flip of a switch, we had almost 100 million viewers around the country and parts of the world watching this infamous slow speed pursuit. this surreal spectacle on television. >> simpson eventually surrendered to police and his double murder trial became what many called a circus inside and outside the courtroom. hundreds of millions watched the trial and when he was acquitted, divisions in our country only deepened. >> i do believe in my heart that he was guilty of the crime. >> jury spoke and he was acquitted. >> criminal trial but jurors in a later civil trial found o.j. simpson liable for the deaths and ordered him to pay $35.5 million to the victims' families. the goldman and brown families have tried to collect that money for decades. only getting a fraction of it. this morning, they vow the fight to collect simpson's assets will continue even after his death. in fact, goldman's family

vowed to never speak simpson's name and in fact in interviews only refer to him as the killer. well, yesterday goldman's father and sister said his death ended their hope for true accountability. now while simpson did end up in prison for murder, he ended up -- didn't end up in prison for murder. he did end up locked up for newspaper years in nevada in an armed robbery case in nevada. he was convicted of nine count of armed robbery and the kidnapping of two sports memorabilia dealers in a las vegas hotel. he got out and lived in the ritzy red rock country club behind several gates in a friend's home and often seen posting on social media. >> my health is good. i meaning obviously i'm dealing with some issues. >> that was one of o.j. simpson's last social media posts. downplaying his cancer status. shawn? reed, before his fall from grace, simpson was a household name bursting on to the national scene as a star usc running back and he won the 1968 riseman trophy and spent

most of the pro career with the buffalo bills. off the field, simpson was a congressmen captor and actor. he has strong ties to the bay area and he grew up in san francisco both he and his sister also lived at a housing project in the potrero hill neighborhood. he played football at galileo high school and graduating there in 1965. four years later, footage from our archives show he returned to visit the school and he went to usc but before that attended the city college of san francisco. our wilson walker takes a look back at the complicated legacy with one man who knew oj his entire life. >> but it's something that when you can say two letters, you just say oj. just say oj. people know who you are talking about. around the world. >> reporter: for timothy allen simon the letters oj are more than the san francisco sports

hero who became notorious he knew simpson from the time he was a child. >> well, native san franciscan. and you know, oj is -- maybe one of the most famous native san franciscans of all-time. i have known his family my entire life. >> reporter: he says the story of o.j. simpson is one that has changed this country and it was at first the fairy team success of a young man famously from the city's poorest neighborhoods. >> you might say this is with i'm trying to do now. i come from a pretty rough neighborhood around here. >> yeah, it was tough. it was tough. life is tough. so when we say a tough community, i hope that your viewers don't necessarily view that is because of its zip code necessarily. >> i feel if i make it. that would be a good example for other kids out there. >> you know, not out of -- wealth or opulence. not with a silver spoon but in the belief if you apply yourself and you work hard, that you can become

something great. and he did. >> reporter: then there are the other chapters of the simple sovereign story. the chase, the murder charges, and the trial of the century. >> i would say maybe the trial of two centuries. in the fact that it's still as vivid in the minds of those who witnessed the trial. and i think this is an important point that it created an industry within media itself. >> reporter: a media frenzy surrounding a trial that would run right through america's racial divisions. >> not guilty of the crime of murder. >> reporter: and the reaction to the verdict in simon's mind, another part of a long complicated story that has rivetted the nation and challenged it. >> he was acquitted by a jury of his peers. which means that he's innocent. but yet, much of america and i would include in no offense media decided, well, even though he was acquitted, we're going to make

mugs. ♪ bmo ♪ a long time san francisco business is saying good-bye to the city and moving to a new location across the bay in oakland. staff tell jose martinez the customers aren't coming to them anymore so they're going to the customers. >> reporter: it's been 16 years since he started selling craft beer on 16th street in the mission. but now the manager says it's time to say good-bye. >> pretty sad to be leaving actually. but -- just, you know, the way that the business has been going. and the mission these days with the -- media doom loop cycle and the perpetuation of that and then like -- the outflux of people from this area in particular

has made foot traffic dive maybe quarter of what it was. >> reporter: he's been the manager here for the last three years and says in an attempt to save the business, they decided to move to oakland. basically chasing their customers. >> all the customers that used today live here, all of the like regulars and stuff that used to live here. all the artists, all of, you know, the musicians and stuff that the demographic used to be over here all moved to oakland because it's so much cheaper. all been pushed out because of how many tech booms now and now they left, the rent is still up. [ laughter ] >> reporter: one of regular customers is christian lester a teacher who lives in san carlos but has been coming here a few times a week since they opened in 2007. >> i was surprised. i mean. not surprised because business has been bad. there have been times when joe mo and i are the only people here. you know. he makes -- three -- he has three customers in a day or something. something ridiculous. but so it -- i feel sad for that and i'll still,

you know, yeah. >> reporter: especially because he likes the new location in oakland's rock ridge neighborhood. >> the neighborhood there is really growing and there's a lot of families and younger families there. there's a lot of, you know, almost five times the foot traffic that there is here. it's a very vibrant area. >> and for now, they're going to keep serving beer there until june while getting ready to open their doors of the new location in oakland in the fall. reed? a dramatic helicopter rescue of a woman on mount tam. look at that. the woman pulled from the bottom of the ravine yesterday after her car flew 200 feet from the highway and as rescuers carried her out of the area the woman was grateful to be alive and over and over apologized. listen. >> so sorry for all this trouble. >> no. not trouble at all. not trouble at all. >> yes it is. >> no. [ laughter ] >> this is a survival story and an example of how the first responders hours of training

pays off to save lives. we understand that woman is expected to be okay. look at that precarious situation. that's training. and that's the bay area first responders we're so proud of them. let's take a live look outside right now. a camera from different mountain vista. mount diablo. looking down on the east bay. good morning to all of the friends in the east bay. yes, sir, you have us covered and we understand i did good getting my dirt pile moved before the rain comes in. >> you did great. but i know you have another one today so work hard today too. because that rain comes late tonight around 10:00 p.m. in your neck of the woods. so let's dive into that forecast. and let's talk about it. north, south, east and west. everywhere in the bay area whether you like it or not we're going to hit with shower in the overnight hours tonight and early morning hours lingering into our saturday afternoon. and tapering off into our sunday forecast. how is it that it's always the weekend? doesn't it feel like that. i feel like we've had so many storm systems moving in that same direction from the gulf of alaska recently. and those have been bringing in plenty of

showers coincidentally on weekend since i mean, gosh, january now. here's what it's looking like though this weekend. partly cloudy skies for us today. just around lunchtime. we're going to see a lot more of that cloud blanket the bay area into the evening hours tonight around 6:00. but it's still dry at this point. this means if you have any outdoor activities you are in the clear when it comes to evening dates and any outdoor plans tonight. until around that 10:00 hour. like i mentioned to reed. this is what's happening all the way up in the north way we go. light showers first and moderate pockets of rain really wrap into the bay closer to around 1:00 a.m. continue to build in in the morning early morning hours tomorrow with now moderate rain widespread from santa cruz to santa rosa. snow in the higher elevated areas are expected. that's the reason why we're going to see snow near mount hamilton into the 7:30 hour tomorrow morning. catching a little bit of a

break closer to lunchtime. as that major band of rain moves off into the sacramento valley. leaving us with just a little bit of some unsettled weather throughout the rest of the evening hours. and into the sunday morning forecast. notice that circulation also, that's the best depiction of the area of low pressure and it's moving just inland from offshore. so we're going to continue to watch that decay heading into our saturday forecast. leaving us with drier conditions sunday afternoon. so with that in mind also talk about the winds it's going to get a little bit gustier in the afternoon hours today as the can't initially moves in. wind speeds anywhere up to around 30, 35 miles per hour even as it starts to settle its way in. if you have any outdoor objects now is the time to secure them before later tonight. or at least you have this afternoon right? 60s are in the forecast for us today so a lot cooler compared to yesterday's 80s and we'll continue to cool down and i'll have that coming up in just a bit. for now over to you, reed. okay, thank you so much. get people out on the roads safely on this friday. you made it everybody a live look from the bay bridge. our toll plaza camera there. metering lights

are off right now. so you get to go through and just say i did it before the backup. when the lights turn on in about 15 minutes, it will not be quite so clear. as you peak your way towards the golden gate bridge, it is a bit slow on highway 101 going southbound into sausalito or maybe coming into the city of san francisco if you are going the other way. but once you start that drive over into the city, it's completely in the green going both directions. most of you have to deal with detours though due to the southbound 880 lane closures to get through the san mateo bridge area and we're watching that one closely for you this morning. although first responders handling it pretty well. no delays to report right now. shawn? reed, thanks. state workers have just been ordered by governor newsom to come back to the office in sacramento. workers were told they need to be in the office at least two days a week starting in june. this impacts around 240,000 workers and it's a significant policy shift. since the start of the pandemic state workers have been able to set their own remote work policies. >> you know, our scientists

welcome back. the warriors facing off against the pelicans tonight at chase center as we take a live look outside. the dubs have just two games left in the regular season. both games at home. tip-off tonight at 7:00. the warriors are fighting for seeding at this point. they cannot get out of the play in tournament. but every game still matters. last night the dubs took on the trailblazers. the warriors have made an epic push of late winning nine of the last ten games including this one. no klay thompson. no green. no problem. the warriors showing off their strength in the final frame ripping off a 17-1 run in the fourth quarter and curry

hey, 5:29 on friday and look at that. there's carl sort of hovering over us this morning. that's our camera out of salesforce tower right now looking west. and it's just going to be one of those days right? we are seeing mother nature say a-ha, not so fast going into spring and summer. i'm still in charge. >> absolutely. i mean, just yesterday what? we were talking about like 80s in our inland areas and today, we're dropping down to the 60s with 50s by tomorrow. what is going on? reed said it perfect. the weather is like uh-huh, no. remind yourself we still live in the bay area and we still get active weather and that's the case for us as we head into this afternoon and evening hours tonight. what's happening is an area of low pressure is moving its way from the gulf of alaska bringing in some cool weather for us and some rainy skies into the overnight hours

tonight and early morning hours tomorrow and lasting into our weekend forecast. our rain chances really start to increase tonight. just around 10:00 and that's going to be the case for us all throughout our early morning hours tomorrow and our saturday forecast. lasting into saturday afternoon. decreasing as we head into our sunday forecast. and we're going to time that out for you coming up in just a bit. but let's also talk about temperatures because i just mentioned yesterday we were in the 80s in our inland areas. and 70s up in wine country and now pretty much all hand-in-hand with upper 50s and lower 60s today with some exceptions like antioch for example and through the upper 60s. similar trend in the east closer to livermore and fremont and down into the santa clara valley. but still, this is a lot cooler compared to yesterday. we dropped ten degrees just from yesterday near san jose to today. we're going to continue to cool down into the low 50s all throughout the bay area as we head into our forecast tomorrow. that cold front is going to pack its punch and it's going to bring in a lot different weather for us and this all happens just within a two day period. like i said yesterday was sunny and dry and warm. we were sitting about 12 degrees above average down into the santa clara

valley. today, it's looking a lot different and it's only going to get more different as we head into our forecast tomorrow. we'll have that rainfall total for you coming up in a bit. for now over to you, reed. all right, thank you so much. good morning to the supercommuters at the altamont pass, for those coming out of tracy the roads are a bit sluggish. this is not breaking news for you as this morning a kind of a normal drive getting on to 580 out of livermore. you are navigating right there through a congested area, just be sure to be safe. hayward southbound # 80 closure. all lanes are reportedly still closed. we're watching that one closely. we can also see those approaching the winton avenue exit are going to have to deal with detours out there. no word just yet on when the area will reopen but that's definitely the lead in the traffic headline this morning. navigate safely around it. accuse and acquitted. the fallen sports star at the center of a double murder case has died. prostate cancer took the life of o.j. simpson at the age of 76. looking back on his complicated legacy, so many of us remember and hear -- heard

and watched that police chase after the murder of his ex-wife, nicole brown seven sovereign and her friend, ron goldman and of course the trial. the trial of the century as it was called. simpson's legacy has roots here in san francisco and grew up in san francisco's potrero hill neighborhood and went to school at galileo high school in the '60s and attended the city college of san francisco. but before moving on to a storied career at usc. in the next half hour we'll have more about his san francisco connections from a man who knew o.j. simpson his whole life and we have posted more videos and interviews from his early football days on the website. kpix.com. time now for a look at this morning's other top stories. california's secretary out of state will certificately election results today and still waiting to find out if there will be a recount in silicon valley's district 16 race. santa clara county supervisor joe simitian and evan low both finished in second with the exact same

number of votes. there have been two requests for a recount. another from a former unsuccessful candidate for san mateo county supervisor. lawyers are now determining whether the requests are valid. another lawsuit has been filed against pg&e for the 2021 dixie fire. the owners of the collins forest are now suing for damages of up to $225 million. they say the fire destroyed 55,000 acres of their land and caused a number of injuries on their property. pg&e told us it is aware of the suit but the company has not been served as of yet. the former interpreter to one of the biggest stars in baseball is charged with stealing $16 million from his client. the u.s. attorneys in los angeles announced federal bank fraud charges against epa misuhara. shohei ohtani is considered to be a victim in this case. they allege that he impersonated ohtani liing to

bank employees to get access to the funds. those of you waking up in antioch are aware of a policing problem. your city of more than 100,000 people have just 39 police officers walking the beat. racist texting scandal put nearly half of the department on leave. what does that mean? get this. one officer for every 3,000 people in antioch. to give you some perspective, that antioch statistic is five times more people than an officer in oakland is responsible to protect and serve. san francisco and san jose also say they have tighter ratios as well. and all of those departments say they need help too. andrea nakano looks at what people in antioch are doing until more officers can be brought online. >> reporter: david works at j.j. aquarium in old town antioch and he says he feels safe with his pup rex by his side. but businesses are continually getting hit by thieves. >> it's been kind of a big struggle here with our --

neighbors being broken into a few times. the back door being kicked in. and local law enforcement don't have any access or capability to help us. >> reporter: the antioch police department is short 35 sworn officers according to mayor lamar hernandez-thorpe. of the 80 officers. only 39 are on patrol. residents say the worst part is the criminals are fully aware the police department is understaffed. >> they know. they know where -- when there's cops out and they know where the cops are. and where they're not. and they take advantage of it. >> reporter: mayor hernandez-thorpe says at least on patrol, the department is only one officer short. but it's the investigative and traffic divisions where the shortage is noticeable. he says 20 candidates have been hired since he started offering the $30,000 incentive program. but they still have to get through the police academy. >> we just don't feel safe. and it's -- we just need more officers and i don't see that

happening anytime soon. >> reporter: for now, antioch has hired private security officers to patrol the downtown area. plus residents have noticed chp officers pitching in, especially to put the brakes on side shows popping up in town. residents realize change may not come as fast as they had hoped. but david isn't giving up on antioch. >> different little things i see give me hope. and especially like -- there's still officers here in antioch that do care about the community. and i feel like they got rid of lot of the bad stuff. >> right now, there's still no timeline on when the officers could be back on patrol. salmon fishing has been banned off the california coast for the second year in a row. the pacific fishery management council made the recommendation based off low water levels and high temperatures. our amanda hari spoke with a local fisherman about the impact on his life and business.

>> what's the next step? you know, where do i go? what do i do? you know. do i have to get a land job and am i going to have to wake away from something i love. >> reporter: some of the questions matt is asking himself after a federal fishery disaster declaration is closing the salmon season before it even begins. for the second season in a row. >> it's a huge impact on myself and other fishermen. >> reporter: he says after last year, he no savings and now his family is cutting back. >> instead of just going to the closest grocery store, we -- wait and go to like -- budget friendly grocery stores. get in the water to go get it. >> reporter: he has been a commercial fisherman for more than a decade. he bought this boat about three years ago. specifically so he could fish more salmon. >> this is our salmon sticker. commercial salmon sticker that i never put on the boat from last year. yeah. just -- $100 something. just thrown out the

door. >> reporter: he says he understands why the season has been canceled. and he wants to see the salmon population recover. >> bayically salmon are on a cycle of three years ago. >> reporter: but san francisco bay keeper science director jorosen field says it's a lot more than that. >> salmon need cold water to survive but the state water board refused to enforce its requirements for cold walter flows a lot of salmon died. >> reporter: rosen field says state leaders are keeping the river flows too low and they're exporting too much water to southern california. >> salmon fishing season was closed last year. and yet the number of a monothat returned was still historically low. commercial fishermen and recreational boat operators are taking it on the chin. >> reporter: while he waits for the salmon population the recover, he's putting all his efforts into crabbing. >> since the season opened, i think we've been -- i have been home probably ten days since january. >> reporter: despite difficult

all right, time now for the money watch report. making money off the court is changing the game for college athletes. athletes working to capitalize on endorsement deals and they're also cashing in on their names. their images and likenesses or nil as it's being called. nil is a billion dollar industry that's launching new businesses. new company pays student-athletes up front for their nil rights and then pairs them with a financial advisor and even allows fans to invest in the athletes. >> we believe that this is a really good deal for all parties. >> we didn't have this 21 years ago when i came out of

and the north and then here we go in the overnight hours many of us sleeping as heavy rain starts to develop in the peninsula stretching up into santa rosa region. into the 4:00 a.m. hour tomorrow. wake up tomorrow, noticing snow in the higher elevated areas like potentially mount diablo and some heavy active weather starting to move into the sacramento valley. this is by 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning. so over 24 hours from now, that storm is really active and pushing its way in. and it continue to circulate more rain into our forecast for us with on and off showers throughout saturday evening into early sunday morning. as it starts to decay moving its way inland. so this is an active weather weekend for us. and it's also worth noting that it's going to get pretty breezy too. i mean it's already gusting near san francisco right now. all the way into the 9:00 hour we notice a similar trend along the coastline. at least to the north. here we go all the way into the evening hours tonight. as that cold front moves its way in, wind speeds everywhere throughout the bay area are now sweeping in from the south and anywhere up to around 30 miles per hour and this is into the

8:00 hour tonight. so lots of changes in the forecast for us and gusty conditions to add to these cool temperatures oh it feels so much different compared to yesterday. keep in mind, yesterday and i mean we all know this, just by walking out our front door, we were sitting in the 80s in our inland areas with warmth and sunshine felt all the way down into the santa clara valley. but now we're talking about 60s and 70s and we're going to continue to cool down into the 50s widespread throughout the bay area from the coast to the inland areas by tomorrow. with a gradual warming trend after sunday into early next week with sunshine around the corner. back to you. all right, let's get people out and about on the roadways and we do have a traffic headline this morning. we have photos posted by chp showing what a scene looks like over in hayward on southbound 880. look at that. two big rigs blocking three lanes. one on its side. but in order to help further assist all lanes, they've been closed right at the winton avenue exit. this happened around 4:30 this morning. so we're on top of it and you can get the depth of how much this is impacting your

commute by continuing watching because we are making calls. slow conditions though once you approach the area as many of you will need to find a way around. find detour. southbound 880 lanes reopened after the san mateo bridge exit. so plan accordingly as you get ready to head out the door, shawn? a massive new food hall next to the ikea store. just opened up in mid market and it's a two story space offering nearly a dozen food and drink options. mainly from local vendors and there's also a cooking school and speaking of bouncing back with the help of food, let's take a live look at chinatown in san francisco. the city's night market returns tonight and huge crowds came out last month and late last year. the popular event brings music and fantastic food to grand street on the second friday of each month. and i got the chance to talk to some of the vendors who are preparing for the chance to bring people into the city again tonight and a neighborhood eager for more visitors to support those local businesses. a strong showing in

march for the first night market of the year in san francisco's chinatown. and organizers hope to see large crowds again in april and the rest of this year. >> i think it's important because you know, the -- the traffic in chinatown is being -- quite slow. >> max and his father run by me boba tea. a new business in the neighborhood relatively. they opened four years ago and had a rough start because of the pandemic. while 2023 was a decent year, they need to see more customers come through these streets this year. >> so we need you know, people, tourists to come to chinatown right? to eat, to shop, and you know, to consume right? >> another vendor participating in the night market is the family behind gourmet kitchen and house of dim sum. restaurants that have been in chinatown for years. >> i think the night market is very good for the community. it's going to be bring more people to chinatown. >> even for more established businesses, the impact of the pandemic is still making it tough for them to keep going in
