friday. >> happy friday. gooden the here and i'm shawn chitnis because both nicole and gianna are not here. so i'm going to do my best and so far, so good. >> good enough. >> you are eclipsing me my brother. >> it's nice to have you here. always glad to work with you shawn chitnis. all right, let's take a live look outside on this friday morning. and the sun is starting to show and it's illuminating all the beautiful colors. i think hey that's just a message for the sky for us. jess. absolutely, painting a beautiful pictures for the morning's forecast but once the clouds start rolling in really just a tease ahead because we have some active weather in the forecast for us late tonight early tomorrow morning. and it's almost hard to believe when yesterday we were in the 80s and we're waking up to a beautiful sunrise. everything seems normal right now. but better yet let me just tease ahead and show you the daytime highs today. we're sitting in the 70s near san jose. and you'd think to yourself, okay that's not that bad. dry conditions and 70s but keep in mind yesterday we were at 81 degrees. so a ten degree jump there. now we're into the 60s all the way off into the east bay with #s along the coast.
6:03 am
and into san francisco. low 60s near petaluma and novato and all the way up into santa rosa as well. here's the reason why it's a lot cooler today compared to yesterday. this area of low pressure is moving in from the gulf of alaska, this is bringing in cold dense air into the bay area. not only today, but especially tomorrow once the initial cold front sweeps in from offshore, now as that system moves its way in, it's going to bring in a couple of things for us. of course the cold temperatures i just mentioned. tomorrow all of us are going to be sitting in the 50s. if you think today is cool, wait till tomorrow. and then to add the that we're also getting rainy skies too. our rain chances really start to increase late tonight, early tomorrow morning. many of us are going to sleep through the initial band of rain that moves its way throughout the 1:00, 2:00, 3:00 a.m. hour. but there's more rain where that came from and i'm going to break that apart for you coming up in the first alert forecast because this lingers into the weekend forecast and look, by next workweek, it's as though it's a tease. because once we go back to work it's sunny and beautiful as can be. more on that coming up. for now back to you. >> all right. we're going to talk about what's going on out
6:04 am
the roads right now. yes, sir. the scene in hay word on southbound 880. you can see there on your screen two big rigs blocking three lanes. but in order to help further assist all lanes have been closed right at the winton avenue exit. just know that when you see that exit coming up you are going to have to make your way around it carefully. this happened around 4:30 this morning. so the depth of just how much this will impact the morning commute is right there. very slow conditions once you approach the area as many of you will need to find a detour. southbound 880 lanes reopened after the san mateo bridge exit. so just plan accordingly as you get ready to head out the door. just be safe. other things happening on your roadways this morning. we have a crash going westbound on the bay bridge. it's a busy traffic morning. slow conditions just after the toll plaza because of the crash and as we can see a bit of slow reactions from drivers who are making that drive over into san francisco. metering lights are also now on. but look at that.
6:05 am
we usually see a buildup here, maybe it's what gianna likes to call friday light traffic. to you get sense we miss her doing traffic in you at home do as well. overall a little slow into the city from oakland but across the bay at the golden gate bridge, nice green clear conditions. going over to sausalito to have breakfast this morning or coming into san francisco, it's a nice drive. hey, this morning, rescuers at the russian river face a ticking clock. and they are searching ther a child believed swept away in the springtime waters. looking rival right now at the russian river. close to where yesterday's search began. this is a live picture of that area. this has been a long night for the family who called in around 5:00 last night. reporting two missing children in the water in forestville. crews saved one child but with the new day at child believed to be 10 years old is still missing. as the family waits at the water's edge. so let's talk about what's going on there. the water is high and it moves
6:06 am
fast. there's an understood current and the river underneath the surface of the water full of debris and so that means it's a dangerous search. as the morning progresses, our thoughts and our news team's work to get more information will continue for and with the family. and of course those first responders literally in the water searching through heavy brush this morning for life at this very moment. we got a follow-up to a big community story that's pitting east bay to the city of san francisco. after a unanimous vote to add san francisco bay the name of the oakland airport. the city of san francisco confirming they're going to sue to stop the renaming. oakland's port commission says the goal is to help travelers realize oakland is in the bay area. san francisco says that change is a trademark infringement. so they're fighting. and there's also a big question this morning. does a lawsuit really have any teeth or legal traction? port commission doesn't seem to think so. in fact, here's what they told us. quote -- sfo cannot lay

claim to the geographically descriptive term san francisco let alone claim exclusive cites to san francisco bay. they're going to do everything they can to ensure clarity for travelers about where o. a. k. is. now to this. i'm not shedding any tears. >> definitely devastated that he passed away. >> no tears. on one side. devastation on the other and there you have it. reactions over o.j. simpson's death split. even beyond the grave, the acquitted double murder suspect and often in scandal o.j. simpson continues to divide us as we look back at the san francisco native's complicated legacy. serve sovereign lives his final years in sin city. and died of prostate cancer at the age of 76 according to family that say they were around him when he died. this was the moment in 1994 when the heisman trophy winning running back's achievements went down in flames. following the brutal slayings, 95 million people watched on live television that

slow moving police chase of simpson's white ford bronco on the l. a. freeway. zoe tur was in the news helicopter. >> with the slip of a switch we had almost 100 million viewers around the country and parts of the world watching this infamous slow speed pursuit. this spectacle on television. >> simpson eventually sevennered to police. hundreds of millions watched the trial and divides in our country only deepened when he was acquitted. >> i do believe in my heart that he was guilty of the crime. >> jury spoke and he was acquitted. >> simpson acquitted in that criminal trial but jurors in a later civil trial found simpson liable for the deaths and ordered him to pay $33.5 million to the victims' families. the goldman and brown families have tried to collect
6:09 am
that money for decades. only getting a fraction of it. this morning they vow to fight to collect simpson's asset even after death. goldman's family vowed to never speak simpson's name and in fact in interviews oftentimes mr. goldman would refer to simpson only as the killer. yesterday his father and sister said the death ended their hopes for true accountability. now while serve soften did not ends up in prison for murder, he did end up locked up for nine years in nevada in an armed robbery case in las vegas and in that case, he was convicted on 12 counts of armed robbery and the kidnappings of two sports dealers. at gunpoint in a las vegas hotel. he eventually got out and lived in the ritzy las vegas red rock country enclave behind several gates in a friend's home and often posted on social media and look at this. >> my health is good. i mean, obviously i'm dealing with some issues. >> that was the last time we saw simpson son social media or at least one of the last times and that clip he's downplaying his cancer status. >> reed, before his fall from

grace, serve sovereign was a household name bursting on the national scene as a star usc running back. he spent most of the pro career with the buffalo bills and finished the career with niners. off the field, simpson was a commentator and pitchman and actor. he grew up in san francisco both he and his sister lived in a husbanding project in the hill neighborhood. and even his early sports career has san francisco roots. he played football at galileo high school graduating in 196 #. he returned to visit the school. and we mentioned he went to usc but before that he first attended the city college of san francisco. our wilson walker takes a look back at his controversial life and the impact it still has on us with one man who knew o. j. his entire life. >> but it's something that when you can say two letters, you just say o.j. just say o.j.
6:11 am
people know who you are talking about around the world. >> reporter: for timothy allen simon, the letters o.j. are more than the san francisco sports hero who became notorious. he knew simpson from the time he was a child. >> well, i'm a native san franciscan. and, you know, o.j. is -- maybe one of the most famous native san franciscans of all-time. i have known his family my entire life. >> reporter: he says the story of o.j. simpson is one that has changed this country and it was at first the fairytale success of a young man famously from the city's poorest neighborhoods. >> you might say this is what i'm trying to do now. you know, right now, i'm trying to make it and i came from a pretty rough neighborhood around here. >> yeah, it was tough. it was tough. life is tough. so when we say a tough community, i hope that your viewers don't necessarily view that is because of its zip code necessarily. >> and i feel if i make it, that would be a good example
6:12 am
for other kids out there. >> you know, not out of -- wealth or opulence. not with a silver spoon, but in the belief that if you apply yourself and you work hard, that you can become something great. and he did. >> reporter: then there are the other chapters of the simpson story. the chase, the murder charges, and the trial of the century. >> i would say maybe the trial of two centuries. in the fact that it's still as vivid in the minds of those who witnessed the trial. and i think this is an important point that it created an industry within media itself. >> reporter: a media frenzy surrounding a trial that would run right through america's racial divisions. >> not guilty of the crime of murder. >> reporter: and the reaction to the verdict in simon's mind, another part of a long complicated story that has riveted the nation and challenged it. >> he was acquitted by a jury of his peers. which means that he's innocent. but yet, much

of america, and i would include, in no offense, media decided, well, even though he was acquitted, we're going to make the determination that this man is guilty. and that is un-american. and if we're going to call ourselves americans, we should stand true. we should be devoted to that concept, that construct of our jeffersonian democracy. >> well, we have posted more videos and interviews from his early football days on our website. kpix.com. all right, time 6:12. is san francisco becoming just too expensive? the last call for a bar in the mission and their move across the bay. plus, a woman's plummet down a ravine and a dramatic

a longtime san francisco business is saying good-bye to the city and moving to a new location across the bay in oakland. staff tell jose martinez the customers aren't coming to them anymore so they're going to the customers. >> reporter: it's been 16 years since monk's kettle started selling craft beer on 16th street in the mission. but now manager yomo daweu says it's time to say good-bye. >> pretty sad to be leaving actually. but -- just, you know, the way that the business has been going. and the mission these days with the -- media doom loop cycle and the perpetuation of that and then like -- the outflux of people from this area in particular
6:17 am
has made foot traffic dive; maybe a quarter of what it was. >> reporter: he's been the manager here for the last three years and says in an attempt to save the business, they decided to move to oakland. basically chasing their customers. >> all the customers that used to live here, all of the like regulars and stuff that used to live here, all the artists, all of, you know, the musicians and stuff that the demographic used to be over here, all moved to oakland because it's so much cheaper. all been pushed out because of how many tech booms now and now that they left, the rent is still up. [ laughter ] >> reporter: one of those regular customers is christian lester, a teacher who lives in san carlos, but has been coming here a few times a week since they opened in 2007. >> i was surprised. i mean. not surprised because business has been bad. there have been times when yomo and i are the only people here. you know. he makes -- three -- he has three customers in a day or something. something ridiculous. but so it -- i feel
6:18 am
sad for that. i'll still, you know, yeah. >> reporter: especially because he likes the new location in oakland's rockridge neighborhood. >> the neighborhood there is really growing and there's a lot of families and younger families there. there's a lot of, you know, almost five times the foot traffic that there is here. it's a very vibrant area. >> and for now they're going to keep serving beer there until june while getting ready to open the doors of the new place in oakland in the fall. well, dramatic helicopter rescue you have got to see. this played out saving the life of a woman on mount tam. she was pulled from the bottom of that ravine yesterday after her car flew some 200 feet down the highway. and as rescuers carried her out of the wooded area, the woman grateful to be alive, saying thank you and also listen. she's apologizing. >> so sorry for all this trouble.
6:19 am
>> no. not trouble at all. it's not trouble at all. >> yes it is. [ laughter ] >> no. >> believe me i'm so sorry. this is a survival story and really an example of how our amazing first responders have hours of training and it pays off. to save lives. and we're so grateful despite the precarious nature of the story the woman is going to be okay. a live look outside on this friday morning. and it is beautiful outside. lovely colors in the skies there but we understand shawn, the skies are going to deliver some changes. >> not for long and as we get ready for the weekend jess, we have to prepare for the changes right? >> absolutely. grab the umbrella and grab everything you need to dress warm because right around the corner, i mean the 80s we had yesterday were great. but they're not long-lived and i mean today we're now down into the 60s throughout most of the bay area. to add to that we're also going to continue to cool down into the 50s by tomorrow as a cold front moves its way in. bringing in a series of showers for us widespread throughout the bay area. so let's start off with today. i want to take a look at what's going on for us heading into this afternoon because it's just a blanket of
6:20 am
clouds widespread throughout the bay area. we have that on our virtual reality map right now and we can see that it on futurecast too. that cloud lay already continue to build in into the afternoon hours today but we're still left with dry conditions. that rain system that we've been talking about all week long does arrive into the bay area. but it doesn't happen until late tonight. around 7:30 notice how it's just hitting the tip of the northern portions of counties stretching up into santa rosa. still dry in the 8:00 hour, takes about until 11:00 for us to see a little bit of light rain kind of build from bodega bay stretching up into santa rosa. moderate pockets of rain starting to get closer to that coastline into the 2:00 a.m. hour tomorrow. so keep in mind this is an overnight system and many of russian just going to sleep right through it. and then we're going to wake up around -- let's say. you wake up around 8:30. and at that point we're starting to see drying conditions as that system moved its way throughout the bay. now in the sacramento valley snow still falling up near mount hamilton and more unsettled weather on saturday as the area of low pressure is centered just offshore. bringing in plenty of rain for us heading into our sunday
6:21 am
forecast too. but that once again happens in the early morning hours. we'll start to clear up into sunday evening and we're left with drier conditions just in time for next workweek. but still inconvenient right? it happens over the weekend. many of us might have outdoor plans that were scheduled and we're getting close to around an inch of rain throughout the bay area. actually passing an inch on models right now near yucaipa. lots of changes with the d. and lots of changes when it comes to the rainy skies too because yesterday we were just talking about 80s and beautiful sunshine off in the east bay near antioch and now we're holding tight to the low 60s near concord. it's still off to a dry start right now in the santa clara valley and seeing the low hanging clouds kind of just coastal -- hitting the coastal areas too. los gatos, daytime highs today in the 60s. so it's going to be an interesting one for us as we head into the next couple of days and here's the reason why. that cold front moves in. yes. it brings in rain and gusty conditions and definitely cooler temperatures. we know that now. but watching into next week, we're talking about
6:22 am
a gradual warming trend right back to the 80s and drier conditions right around the corner and that's something to look forward to. reed? major hotspot for those of you in the east bay planning to take southbound 880 in hayward. all morning lev been reporting on this big freeway closure at the winton avenue exit. big rig, one on its side, one looks to be jackknifed there blocking lanes. so you drivers are having to be detoured and starting at the a. street exit and very slow once you get off the 238 connector. coming from san leandro. so our traffic producer cynthia this morning wanting to let you know e to plan accordingly as you get ow the door and yes i do say thanks to cynthia. been helping me all week. another crash reported by chp on southbound 880 as well in oakland. the far right lane blocked causing slow reactions after the embarcadero exit. on some lighter news, if you plan on taking highway 101 from the peninsula over to san francisco, it seems to be traffic free. so get on the roads when you can to avoid any further traffic time. just make your friday easy right? shawn. >> sounds good to me. the dubs entering the final

warriors are facing -- fighting for seeding at this point. they cannot get out of the play in tournament. but every game still matters. last night the dubs took on the trailblazers. the warriors have made an epic push as of late winning nine of the last ten games including this one. no clay thompson. no draymond green. no problem. the warriors showing off their strength in the final frame ripping off a 17-1 run in the fourth quarter. steph curry led the way with 22 points and eight assists and seven rebounds and dubs won 100-92. check out the western conference standings. the kings and rangers both have two regular season games left. so we'd love to see a dubs' win tonight against the pelicans and sunday against the jazz. all right, the first round of the masters golf tournament continuing right now in augusta, georgia. play was suspended yesterday because it was so dark out. bryson dechambeau ride now. he is 7

6:31 am
>> jess? >> i know. i just -- the rain has to ruin the weekends and then of course it dries up by monday right? just in time for the us to go back to work and school. but here's the look at our forecast. it's almost hard to believe that our rain chances are increasing as we head into the next couple of days but a this morning as we wake up a beautiful start and i mean little bit of the low clouds along the foothills into the santa clara valley. a little bit of the haze as we wake up this morning too. it's cool and it's cloudy for us this morning throughout the bay area. whether you live off near concord or whether you are in the heart of san francisco. but no matter where you live in the bay area, rain chances increase for us late tonight early tomorrow morning. and then it's game on as we head into a kind of wet and wild weekend ahead of us, there's going to be moments where it is dry in your local communities in don't get me wrong. not a huge washout event but a few moments heavier than usual rain that's going to fall in the local areas and i'm here to break that apart for you and let you know how much you can expect with the rainfall totals. clouds areholdingen tight to us

this morning. the blanket of clouds continuing to move in from the north all throughout the afternoon. a dry day for us all throughout the bay. yes the rain returns today or late night tonight but watch how it actually kind of falls more into the evening hours tomorrow. just starting to see rain near san francisco and at this point it's been raining for about 30 minutes up near santa rosa, that's going to actually sweep over the peninsula close to around 2:30. keep in mind many of us are asleep at this point. we're going to continue to watch that rain track off into the east and i'm going to have the rainfall totals and how long this system is going to last for you coming up in just a bit. for now over to you, reed. all right, thank you so much. no word just yet on when lanes of southbound 880 will reopen. this is a live look right now and you can see the depth of exactly what happened on the roads. this is an overturned big rig and one also that looks kind of jackknifed there blocking the majority of those lanes. it's debris out on the roads as well. southbound 880 shut down. so detours are in your future this
