>> hey, good morning, anne-marie. the day ended with former president trump blasting the judge for requiring him to be in the court room every day of his trial, arguing that would make him miss other personal and legal milestones. now on day two both sides are try to get back to seat a jury in this historic trial. >> reporter: after a full first day in his first criminal trial, soon former president trump heads back to a manhattan courtroom. >> it's a scam. it's a political witch hunt. >> reporter: trump emerged defiant after yesterday's historic proceedings which ended without a single juror chosen. that's after 96 potential jurors out of a pool of hundreds were brought in, more than hoof of them excused, telling the judge they could not be fair and impartial. >> jury selection is not going to be easy in this case. everyone in this country has an opinion of the former president. some think he's a criminal, an insurrectionist. others think he's a hero who's

being accused unfairly. >> reporter: trump is accused of hiding records, paying funds to storeny daniels. they say trump directed the payments to cover up an alleged past affair with daniels ahead of the 2016 election. trump has denied the affair and the charges. >> this is a persecution like never before. >> reporter: yesterday prosecutors asked the judge to hold trump in contempt over violating a gag order over recent social media posts slamming both cohen and daniels. a hearing is scheduled for next week. trump has publicly said he'd like to testify in the trial, but it's unclear if his legal team will call on him to do so. >> all right. this is the fiftd of trump's four criminal cases to go to trial. it could be the only one to get a verdict before the election. anne-marie, jury selection is expected to take several more days if not weeks. >> oh, wow. jarred hill in new york. thank you, jarred. >> thanks. well, the u.s. supreme court

will hear arguments today that could impact former president trump's election interference case as well as charges against hundreds of january 6th rioters. at issue, the federal charge of obstruction of an official proceeding. now, attorneys argue the law, which was passed in the wake of the enron scandal, can't be used in these cases because it's intended for financial crimes and evidence-tampering. and now to israel where the country's military chief says that they will respond to iran's unprecedented large-scale drone and missile attack over the weekend. while israeli leaders have hinted at retaliation, the government is under intense international pressure not to further escalate the conflict. cbs's debora patta reports from jerusalem. >> reporter: a fiery display of iran's aerial might choreographed for maximum effect resulted in minimal damage. more than 300 projectiles were launched. first came over 170 drones and

30 cruise missiles, all shot down before reaching israel. with help from u.s., supjordan,d saudi arabia, they took out 180 drones. then 120 ballistic missile, half failed to launch or crashed in flight. five ballistic missiles landed and caused minor damage to a military baze. israel's war cabinet favors retaliation while israel's defense force is on standby. >> iran will face the consequences for its actions. >> reporter: we are weighing our steps, the chief says. the launch of so many drones and missiles toward israel will be responded to. the attack has triggered global cause for restraint. >> it's time to step back from the brink. >> reporter: under pressure at home, critics of prime minister benjamin netanyahu question whether he's the right person to

the president. hundreds took part across the city. cbs's weijian jiang reports. >> reporter: from san francisco to chicago, protesters in several major cities blocked traffic, demanding an end to the war in gaza, dialing up pressure for president biden to do the same. in new york city some even waved a hezbollah flag, showing condemnation for israel. the protests were planned before iran launched an unprecedented assault on israel. as biden hosted the prime minister of iraq in the oval office, he stressed, u.s. support of israel but acknowledged fears that responding to iran could widen the war. >> we're committed to a cease-fire that will bring the hostages home and prevent any conflict from spreading from beyond what it already has. >> reporter: cbs news has learned that during a phone call saturday night, president biden urged prime minister netanyahu to think carefully and

strategically about the risks of escalation and said that if the idf launched a reprisal strike on iran, the u.s. would not participate. biden issued this warning to iran just one day before the strikes. >> don't. >> reporter: tehran went ahead anyway. does that signal to iran that it can defy the u.s. without facing any consequences? >> if i'm sitting in tehran and i'm taking a look at what just happened on saturday night, i don't think i would be betting that the u staets is not willing to get engaged here and defend israel. >> reporter: weijia jiang, cbs news, the white house. well, boeing is defending how some of its largest planes are built in the wake of a whistle-blower's claim about safety issue. a boeing engineer is expected to tell a senate subcommittee tomorrow the panels on the outside of the boeing 787 dreamliner could break apart while in the air. well, yesterday boeing's executive said the material used

is resistant to the metal fatigue that can cause cracks in conventional aluminum fuselages. and the american airlines pilots union is warning of a spike in safety issues in that airline. in a memo to its members, the union listed a series of problems including tools left in plane wheel wells and fewer routine aircraft inspections. american said that it's in regular contact with regulators and unions to bolster its strong safety record. about 25 million americans in the midwest are at risk of severe storms today. the most intense thunderstorms will push into iowa, missouri, and illinois, reaching des moines before lunchtime. they will continue moving east, heading through st. louis and then reaching chicago by the dinner hour. these storms will bring a threat of tornadoes and large hail. and tomorrow this system will bring chances of severe weather to michigan, ohio, and indiana. well, coming up, bridge collapse investigation.

"the baltimore sun" reports the fbi opened a criminal investigation. the ship apparently lost power and rammed into the bridge, causing it to collapse. yesterday the "associated press" reported the vessel apparently had electrical problems before it left the port of baltimore. six construction workers were killed when the bridge collapsed. the body of a fourth worker was recovered on sunday. the bodies of two victims are still missing. the "orlando sentinel" say a shocking twist in a deadly carjacking led to the arrest of a florida sheriff's deputy and his wife. cellphone video taken by a witness last week shows the armed kidnapping and carjacking of a 31-year-old woman. she was later found dead in her burnt out vehicle. yesterday authorities arrested sheriff's deputy francisco estrella and his wife for allegedly leaking information to the victim's husband.

neither is thought to be linked to the carjacking or woman's death. >> and the a new mexico judge sentenced a weapons supervisor to 18 months in prison for the deadly shooting on the set of the movie "rust." a tearful hannah gutierrez-reed received the maximum sentence. she was found guilty. cinematographer halyna hutchins was killed when a gun held by alec baldwin was fired during the filming in 2021. >> the jury has found me guilty of this god-awful thing, but that doesn't make me a monster. that makes me human. >> the judge said she did not find gutierrez-reed remorseful for her role in the cinematographer's death. baldwin's involuntary manslaughter trial is set to begin in july. still to come, hitting rock bottom. the search for two people caught on video vandalizing an ancient rock formation. vandalizing an shenlt rock formation. there are places you'd like to be. like here.
