it's downright nice outside this morning at least i think so. but let's get an expert in. jessica, we understand today might be what i call good tomato planting weather. good morning. oh absolutely it is. and it's funny too because yesterday was kind of cool for us in the bay. but by the tomorrow we're talking about 80s once again. so we're kind of in the hybrid day for us today. slowly warming up into those 80s by tomorrow. what's happening is high pressure is moving its way in. so that's going to clear us up and it's going to dry us up and it is going to give us some nice warm temperatures but we are off to a cool start down into the santa clara valley. partly cloudy conditions are in the forecast for us this morning. lasting into this afternoon. very similar to yesterday. but big difference? well, it's the fact that we're going to be seeing a lot warmer weather right around the corner. this system starts to move its way in. it's kind of acting like a little bit of a heat dome keeping the rain clouds away from us. to add to that continue to watch drier conditions last into the weekend forecast with above average temperatures already in sight for us today. now our

daytime highs this afternoon, they're mostly sitting about four to ten degrees above average. upper 70s in our inland areas like concord and san jose and upper 60s just close to san francisco. and let's take san jose as an example. we will hit the 80s as we head into the forecast for wednesday and thursday. a similar trend with a little bit of a heat bump just into our weekend forecast. and all throughout the bay area, i mean, we're talking about spots like -- petaluma and santa rosa. we're going to feel that warmth today too. it's definitely a spring-like day for us throughout the bay. light winds and dry conditions. this is the type of forecast like reed mentioned to get out there and plant the tomatoes and plant anything in the garden and maybe take the kids to the park this afternoon. i mean we're talking about 77 today in san jose. 75 in los gatos. this is a stunning day to really take advantage of the forecast. the pollen count is high though. more on that coming up in a bit. for now over to you, g. thank you. starting off the look at our mapping system to see the green on the roadways this morning. which is good news and boy what a difference a day makes. not seeing any

delays or issues out there in comparison to yesterday's nightmare commute was. 101 out of marin and along the peninsula all checking in problem free. live look here t the golden gate bridge. great start so far, so good as you commute this morning. and if you are taking the ride over to the bay bridge e here's a look at traffic through there. heading into the maze. and right now we're not seeing a lot of issues or trouble spots there. traffic is actually moving along pretty well overall on most of the bay area freeways. well, let's take a live look at 880 and the golden gate bridge once again. traffic flowing normal this morning, a major reversal from what we saw yesterday during the peak of rush hour. you might have been caught in this. hundreds of protesters shut down these major bay area arteries. 880 in oakland and then the golden gate bridge. this was to draw attention to the war in gaza. some even using chains and barrels filled with concrete to block the roadway. we asked one of the protesters on 880 about their message yesterday. >> they want to say that

they're condemning what's happening and what israel is doing, at the same time they're giving them bombs and money. >> the shutdowns lasted into the early afternoon before chp was able to get all of the lanes reopened. and we know some of you were stuck in your cars and some people for more than four hours. >> the beginning when i was kind of afraid and i didn't know what was going on. this is not fair for lot of people that are going to work. they're trying to make some money, you know, and look what happened. >> well, while the chp had their attention on 880, another group took over the golden gate bridge. haifa pa troll thought something like this might happen but didn't know specific plans and protest organizers were very clear this action was not the last. spokesperson told us what's expected to come next. >> we're going to keep pushing until people pay attention and we know from our history that

people's actions work. and they won't listen to us unless we hit them where it hurts which is in the economic region. >> well, as the hours dragged on, people had no choice but to wait it out. as many did and although some were sympathetic, some were also frustrated. >> yes it's an inconvenient but it's also inconvenient to be a human being in gaza. >> when you have this level of disruption to our whole transportation system, i think we need to draw a line. >> well, chp says they arrested 26 protesters at the bridge demonstration and four cars were impounded and those arrested are facing multiple charges including unlawful assembly. but as crazy as the traffic blockage was this was not the first time a gaza protest of this magnitude happened. >> in november we remember this. this was during the apec summit and protesters took over the bay bridge. that time once again, calling for a cease fire in gaza and protesters we know

this, they snarled traffic for hours to get their point across. there were ramifications to many who were stuck there. in fact, ucsf transplant organs were delayed because they couldn't get over the bridge. protesters got what critics said at the time was really just a slap on the wrists. [ cheering and applause ] yeah, cheering. that's the so-called bay bridge 78. met with those cheers as they walked out of a san francisco courtroom avoiding jail time. and getting a deal to just do community service and pay a small amount of restitution money. well, 78 there, yesterday 38. they were arrested at both the golden gate bridge and 880 but this time, many say this new group will face some more aggressive charges. we wait and see, our shawn chitnis is live at the golden gate bridge with the breakdown of what we expect by way of charges and punishment this time. shawn? >> reporter: reed, good morning. yes, so we know there are a list of charges that they are looking at. those include unlawful assembly, resisting an officer, conspiracy as well as

a new one, false imprisonment. we have not seen that one before in cases like that. and that's because people were truly stuck in their cars or on the road for hours. and it does speak to the amount of preparation that the protesters took in planning what we saw around the bay area yesterday. to make sure it was as difficult as possible to remove them using both heavy chains and cement barrels. the chp was quick to get in position on the bay bridge during all this but perks say they can only be so proactive with their current staffing levels. >> every single law enforcement agency in california is shorthanded and the more that we put these folks in a position where they're sitting idly on a bridge, the more they can be doing things more productive elsewhere. so that's sort of a double edged sword and a personnel manpower challenge they have to deal with. >> reporter: so that's former fbi special agent jeff harp. he was actually one of the commuters who was caught up in

the traffic stuck because of the protest. he says another thing that makes these kinds of protests tough to get ahead of is that the planning is no longer on social media. it's all happening on encrypted channels. now what we talk about that new charge of false imprisonment. there are some including lawyers who believe that's going to be seen as excessive. but other law enforcement experts would point out that it actually will be seen as lenient compared to some of the charges protesters in other parts of the country will face for their actions yesterday. reed, back to you. >> all right, shawn chitnis, thank you. now this. and we didn't see protests just on our bridges. this demonstration in the south bay got tense for a few moments. this was outside of the tesla factory in fremont last night. protesters caravaned there, also part of the nationwide day of action demanding a cease fear in gaza. and an end to all u.s. aid to israel. >> i see so many people i know that just keep -- just going

back to their daily life. because they don't want the deal with it. we're just going to keep saying no. we're still here. you know? you cannot just turn your eye away from this. >> it was not just the bay area either. we saw protests all over the country. like at seattle's airport and the brooklyn bridge in new york and in chicago. a presidio hair forced travelers to get out of their cars and walk so that they could make it inside. as for the cause, the protesters are focused on, there are reports that israeli military is delaying its planned ground invasion into the southern gaza city of rafah. an estimated 1.4 million palestinian civilians are sheltered there after fleeing the fighting elsewhere. we brought you continuing live coverage of the protest shutdowns through the morning on air and streaming on cbs news bay area. we also have continuing coverage on our website at kpix.com. time now 5:10. get ready for another recall of a bay area district attorney. the

peterson murder case. a couple of hours from now, he's set to appear by zoom in a san mateo county court for a motion hearing. the l. a. innocence project recently took up his case, more than 20 years after peterson was convicted of murdering his wife laci and their unborn son. the project is saying some key evidence was ignored. they filed motions to receive sealed court records, a dna test, and other evidence. alameda county's top prosecutor will be facing a recall. the registrar of voters announced last night pamela price's opponents collected enough valid signatures to trigger a recall election. they needed roughly 73,000 signatures and they got close to 75,000. the board of supervisors will discuss the results at a meeting april 30th. then schedule a special election. no comment yet from the da or her team. an update on a wild night of side shows in oakland. police tell us officers cited

52 people, towed 21 cars, and made three arrests after this round of chaotic side shows early sunday. investigators say drivers and spectators took over at least seven major intersections from west to east oakland, spinning doughnuts as you see there, and firing shots into the air, even setting a couple of cars on fire. well, our bay area kids need teachers, this we know. but more and more teachers say it's difficult to find housing prices that match what their salaries will pay. now there's word the teachers with san francisco unified might be getting some help. the district will vote today on resolutio. one is on 7th street and the other located downtown on goff street over between page and haight. already one site consisting of 135 units is under construction on 43rd street. they have a big goal of having 550 units ready for teachers to turn the key by 2030. our bay area farm workers, they're crucial part of our

community. and our economy. and the life and legacy of cesar chavez has really shaped their experience. now there's a resolution for the city of san francisco to recognize his birthday of march 31st, as a paid holiday. mayoral candidate safai to deepen the resolution after governor gavin newsom declared the day a statewide day. gianna? well, in the south bay, a driver is lucky to survive this wreck you see right here. wow. the caltrain hit the car near the san martin station and also pushed the guardrail right through the front windshield. amazingly, the driver made it out with only moderate injuries. wow. and taking a live look outside on this tuesday morning. and yesterday was a nice appetizer for what the weather is going to be this week. because jessica, we have sunny skies and warm temperatures and when is -- you said 80s yesterday. so when is that? >> i said. yeah, 80s is on menu. that is just the appetizer and keep in mind, yeah, you know it's interesting. we have dry

weather today and tomorrow and when you look at our long-range models, there's not a drop of rain in sight. are we finally in that dry period that we've all kind of been hoping for but they didn't want to say it out loud? here's the good news, well above average for the rainfall season so you can say it out loud. finally dealing with a dry break and so great to have it. here's what we have today for the daytime highs. 70s in the forecast for us this afternoon near san jose. stretching off into the east bay. we're pretty much all in the 70s in our inland areas with 60s along the coastline from half-moon bay into san francisco. 70s once again up into wine country. and anywhere from napa all way up into santa rosa. now as we take a look at the next seven days, well, there's really not too much of a change when it comes the least dry skies. but temperatures will kind of fluctuate just a bit as high pressure moves in. and out of the bay. another thing to mention too and i said this earlier, our pollen count is relatively high. so if you are sensitive to allergies like myself, we're in the medium to thigh category, it's worth noting there's a reason. there's a method behind the madness and that pollen count will remain high as we head into next couple of days. high pressure is the reason why

we're dealing with dry skies and at least some mild temperatures. i mean daytime highs today like we talked about sit in the 70s and by tomorrow, we're talking about 80s just around the corner. and here's our rainfall versus average. i brought this up yesterday to kind of paint the picture where we're at this season alone. just up until yesterday, i mean, we're now up to 99% of average off near livermore which is really impressive overall. and even more impressive numbers have been seen widespread throughout the state from santa rosa down into san jose and pretty much everywhere in-between as well. let me drop this real fast and let talk about a little bit about some rain. the lack thereof i should say. the dry skies because still going to be partly cloudy for us as we head into wednesday and thursday and lasting into friday with sunnier skies into the weekend forecast and that's in the inland areas. we're going to see the clouds kind of hold on tight to the coast for a bit longer so if you live near the bay, close to san francisco, or even oakland for that matter, we'll also see that warm-up in the wednesday forecast with partly cloudy skies lasting into the weekend. g? jessica, thank you. let's talk about the roadways right

now. because good news, everything is really quiet and easy commute so far. the live look at bay area bridges with the bay bridge first. and you can see it's nice ride overall we're not seeing any major issues or problems for anyone heading into san francisco right now. metering lights are off. and easy smooth commute heading over into the city. it's kind of the case for most of the bay area freeways thankfully. because yesterday was a very, very tough commute. but #:18 in the morning. not loot of cars out there. not a lot of volume. that makes it easier traveling through 880 or parts of some of the bridges. as well as that ride along the peninsula for 101. now if you are making that ride across the golden gate bridge, out of marin county, all lanes are open and all clear, no caltrans to slow you down on the north end sometimes we'll see that in the morning as they do road work along 101. but so far things are pretty quiet and smooth there. and live look at 880 here, yesterday this was all backed up. today all open and all clear and no delays. if you are near the coliseum this morning, traffic is moving along very well. and even in the south bay, as we take a look there, traffic is pretty

well, one of baseball's most underrated pitchers and former athletic ken holtsman died this weekend. he had two no-hitters under his belt and he helped propel the a's to three world series championships in the '70s. the lefty finished his career with a 174-150 record and a sub 3.5 e.r.a. and also owns the distinction of the winningest pitcher of jewish heritage in mlb history. he actually had nine more wins than sandy koufax. the a's posted a statement on ken's passing, they said they're saddened and he helped create lasting memories for the franchise, he was 78. and take a look at this. look who was at the mets' citi field yesterday. that is rachel robinson. rachel was married to jackie robinson prior to his death and she was in new york to help celebrate the 77th anniversary of jackie breaking the color barrier. every april 15th, players don number 42 on

we wish you a very good morning and as we await the sunrise and what the sun will bring and we understand jessica bringing you in. it might bring temperatures that will keep us smiling and maybe even needing some sunscreen? >> absolutely. i mean, do you guys like 80s? >> yes. >> i mean, if somebody says they don't, smack them. >> well, gianna, actually lives in like the only exception if you live along the coast, you are sticking to the 60s this week. >> i guess so. >> g, come hang out with us in the inland areas. hang out with reed or nicole in the inland areas and it will be nice and warm for us and let's start off with the temperatures this afternoon. throughout the bay area, we're actually seeing a little bit warmer weather than yesterday. yesterday we were mostly in the 60s and today now we're seeing 70s. highlight all throughout the bay area. and we'll continue to warm up in the forecast tomorrow as high pressure builds its way in to our atmosphere and we'reactually left with dry conditions all week looks like

i said. all the friends who live near from pacifica into half-moon bay. san francisco is another good example. we'll see 70s today near wine country. and take a quick look at this. we have above average weather pretty much no matter where you live. so 70s and 60s and regardless you are dealing with beautiful weather this afternoon. dry skies for us all week long. we're finally catching that much-needed dry break that i'm sure all of us were really hoping for considering the fact that this rain chance model and our maps have been showing very active weather as of recent and it has been very active season. i mean take a look at the numbers. as of yesterday, we are well above average in areas like san jose and stretching up into san francisco. 116% of average just in the heart of the city. and we are so close to hitting 100% off near livermore for the season too. there's some big changes around the corner for us as we head into our summer season. but it was a very active winter and a very active spring. and no. it was not last year with the 17 atmospheric rivers but still the numbers really speak for themselves. a reservoirs are really high right now and we're seeing well above average numbers and

more on what you can expect for the rest of the dry week's forecast and really game plan to enjoy the beautiful weather. but for now over to you, g. jessica, thank you. well, going to enjoy the beautiful weather and you make your way towards some of our bay area bridges maybe you are going to take the golden state or the bay bridge today. maybe you will get to put the top down if you have got that kind of car. but right now it's a little chilly. wait a bit. but bay bridge toll plaza, metering lights are off. and it's a smooth ride into the city right now. and so far, so good on all of our major freeways. the only place we're tracking any sort of brake lights or delays is that ride into richmond this morning. westbound 80 just a few brake lights through there. here's a live look at the golden gate bridge. and we're seeing that volume now sort of traveling through. but overall, it is a fairly quiet commute for anyone making that ride out of marin county. 880 both directions looking good as well of course keeping aless eye on all the freeways. and the south bay, checking in problem free this morning on 101 as well as 280. traffic though moving much smoother this morning but it was a much different story yesterday after gaza protesters caused major blockage on the

buses could be seen moving into parking lots and driveways although no inmates appeared to board the buses just yet. >> we were notified today that the prison is going to be closed by the bureau of prisons. and we didn't have any sort of notification prior to this morning. >> reporter: she is an attorney with rights behind bars, an advocacy group that represents inmates and sued the prison over numerous sexual abuse and civil rights violations. she said the shutdown came as a surprise just days after a court appointed special master came in last week. all 600 inmates could be moved to other facilities by friday. >> their reck nix of the fact that they can't meet constitutional requirements now and find the solution is closure is very telling. and you know, maybe that is the best step. >> reporter: last month, the fbi searched the prison as part of a years long investigation into sexual abuse of inmates by guards. since 2021, at least

eight prison personnel have been charged with abuse. five pled guilty and two were convicted and another case is pending. also pending are 50 civil rights cases. >> people were subject to, you know, forcible sexual assault by officers. who were subject to officers forcing them to conduct strip shows at the facility. and they would do things like that using their methods of power. so you know, saying that they will issue a disciplinary order if they don't do these sexual acts. >> reporter: it's not yet known if the shutdown is temporary or permanent. inmates and their families are concerned about where they will be sent next to serve out their sentences and montes hopes some non-violent offenders can be credited and have the sentences reduced. >> we hope that the bop can take meaningful steps to release people and make sure that, you know, they aren't further harmed throughout this whole process. >> the prison employs just over

200 people who could be forced to relocate. fci dublin is one of six women only federal prisons and the only one west of the rocky mountains. last year, a former warden at the prison was convicted of sexually assaulting multiple women and lying to the fbi. he was sentenced to 70 months in prison. well, happening today, sfmta will be voting on speed camera locations throughout the city. this map shows the potential 33 spots in san francisco that could get the new technology by 2025. these cameras are located near schools, senior centers, and along the city's so-called high injury network. the distribution of the cameras is part of a pilot program governor gavin newsom signed into law last year. motorists driving more than11 miles over the posted speed limit will be fined and at this point we don't know how much the fines will cost. nicole? time now 5:40. it's already hard enough to get by and your utility bills could still be skyrocketing. so what's being done about it?

thanks to high pressure sitting just offshore. that's going to keep us warm and we're actually expecting 70s today unlike our 60s from yesterday. and we're going hit the 80s by tomorrow. little bit of a warm-up day-by-day thanks to the system offshore and also just going to continue to see some partly cloudy skies really a beautiful forecast for us today, tomorrow and lasting into this weekend. because we're finally seeing dry conditions for a long stint of time. i mean, take a look at this. no chance of showers anytime soon in the next seven days. and if you are probably starting to think ooh no, what does that mean for us? we are well out of a drought for the whole state of california thanks to a very active season last year in 2023 and a very active season this year too. i mean, last year we had over 200% of that snow pack. all left in the sierra. this year, we're over 100%. so great news across the board and our reservoirs are high and we have plenty of snow pack and we're well above average for a rainfall season so far. it's just good news all across the state of california. i could not love it any more than what we have right now with the current conditions. and of
