this is cbs news bay area with elizabeth rea with elizabeth cook. cracking down on speeding drivers. what san francisco is considering that could lead to faster penalties. they are supposed to light the way but we look at the damage to the light poles at lake merritt. it was not the ending the warriors or dove nation wanted. how the team is reflecting on this past season. san francisco is one step closer to getting new speed cameras that would automatically send out tickets. supporters say it is all about safety but critics are worried this is not the right move. more on that in a moment. sheriff's deputies have started to lift the lockdown at one san francisco jail . the

jail in san bruno could open later on this week. the sheriff's department blames a recent spike in violence for the lockdowns. the deputies union has asked for the national guard to come in and help with stopping. alaska airlines is still experiencing some delays after their planes were grounded by the faa this morning. the airlines has the grounding was due to a problem with a software update that messed with the weight and balance systems. at our local airports, the delays appear to be on the inbound flights from the pacific northwest. we hear from one passenger who was stuck while flying from portland to oakland. >> i texted my family. i hate that i am on a boeing 737 and they are not telling us why we are not taking a. kind of stressed me out. lamp posts around oakland's lake merritt have appeared to be vandalized. this has been happening for more than a month now and our chopper was overhead today while maintenance crews worked

to stop some of the light posts along the lake. we are following the story and we will have the latest coming up at 5:00 stanford will officially introduce kate pay as the head coach for women's basketball. she spent two decades as an assistant coach for the team. she is a former player herself and she replaces tara vanderveer who retired after 38 seasons and three national titles. onto first alert weather now. we are still enjoying a dry stretch with warm temperatures across the bay area today. meteorologist jessica burch is in the virtual view studio with how long this will last. >> it is one of the warmest days we have had so far in the bay area with high pressure sitting directly off shore, driving in some really warm temperatures. winds from the north and a mix of sun and clouds throughout the afternoon hours today. for everyone in our inland areas that is thinking, is this summer

already, in a way, it seems like that. we are talking about 80s this afternoon but it is about 10 degrees above average. getting a good look at our local communities, 71 in san francisco. upper 60s along our coast. a little bit of the clouds holding on tight to the coastline and along the bay shoreline. for our inland areas, plenty of sunshine into this afternoon. we will see 80s in the forecast again tomorrow in our inland areas but i will not be the case into the weekend. we get the cold front moving in by early next week, bringing in more clouds, a light chance of showers late next week but for now, we are remaining dry. that is the reason why our pollen count is still high. lasting into the rest of this week we are in the medium high category. as i suggest, do all of those outdoor activities but take it slow or your loved ones who do have allergies. once we head into the rest of this week, we will see a cool down. not by much but we are flirting with the upper 70s and lower 80s

throughout the rest of this week in our inland areas. partly cloudy skies turning into sunshine by sunday and monday . get a good look at the bay. a similar trend for anyone who lives close to san francisco, across the bay bridge into oakland. we hold on tight to the 60s and 70s into the weekend. partly cloudy skies to pick up next week as well. if you got stuck on the golden gate bridge during monday morning's protest, san francisco's district attorney says you should call the chp and tell them about your experience. 26 people were arrested on monday as part of a protest that shut down the bridge in both directions. hundreds of drivers were left stranded for hours. the protesters were released yesterday with no charges. da brooke jenkins says that is because the fennelly -- felony charge of conspiracy required her to take action within 48 hours and it will take a lot longer than that to build her case. >> we have to be able to attribute specific conduct to specific individuals. what role they played, got they were

present and participating and that they were not simply an onlooker. >> as for the 12 people arrested in the protest that shut down 880 in oakland, alameda county da pamela price says her office is waiting to receive case information from the chp. new speed cameras just got the green light from transit officials in san francisco and the consequences would be swift. the cameras would automatically send tickets to speeding drivers and they are sent to go in some of the city's most dangerous areas for pedestrians. john ramos went to one of those intersections where the reaction was missed. -- mixed. >> the idea is to put 33 automated cameras around the city in places like this that are determined to be of either high risk or chronic violation. the most speed violated road is harrison between 4th and pick streets. data shows that one out of every four cars is

traveling at least 10 miles per hour over the posted speed limit. the limit on the five lane street is 25 miles per hour because of a school located in the middle of the block. it is a prime location for a speed camera. >> people need to be more aware that they need to keep their speed down. it is not a highway. i know are links to a highway but people are moving all around. >> the proposal would make san francisco part of a statewide pilot program installing cameras that send automated citations to the owners of cars that violate the speed limit by 10 or more miles per hour . >> san franciscans are generally pretty excited about these speed cameras and it is because we are all feeling how much things have changed on our streets, how dangerous it has become because so many drivers are pushing beyond the limits. >> not everyone is feeling that way. alexis jimenez says she

trusts the instincts of the average city driver and thinks the cameras would be more appropriate on the freeways. >> streets like this, i think it is just too much control. i think everyone in the bay area, generally, as a driver myself, knows what the limitations are, when to speed, went to not speed. i think it is unnecessary. >> mitch washington suspects it would be less about safety and more about the fines. >> 5 or 10 miles per hour above the speed limit happens all the time whether it is on the freeway or off the freeway. if it really helps, i am all for it but if it is just to make money on unsuspecting motorists, the no, i am against it completely. >> michelle anderson seems skeptical about the whole idea. >> i would probably end up in traffic court or wherever. what is the magic number, 10 miles over? what if they were going

five miles over? >> actually, the city of chicago tried lowering the threshold of their cameras from 10 miles per hour to six and the citations exploded. at one intersections, ticket sort from 500 to 15,000. that is probably an indication of how differently people drive than the letter of the law dictates. >> still, with muni's unanimous vote, san francisco's seems headed to begin issuing robo tickets as a way to change behavior on the city streets. >> the issue now heads to the board of supervisors for final approval . the program would be managed by the transportation authority and not the police department. if it is enacted, muni expects to get the first cameras up and running sometime in 2025. helping neighborhood businesses catch your attention and hopefully bounce back. we will show you how a.i. is

celebrating a new project in san francisco's excelsior district and it is all to support small businesses. store owners are bouncing back with new eye catching designs. take a look. >> this was put up about nine years ago. with the wind and the debris blowing on it, it gets really dirty. it was perfect timing when they came in. i was already looking at new logos and bringing more curb appeal . when she came through, it was like right at the right moment. >> business owners say the results are all thanks to the designers. our shawn chitnis has morning revitalization project using artificial intelligence. >> a design company is using a.i. technology to help small businesses here in the excelsior district improve their storefront, making them more inviting and attention-getting. it is a method that they have used in other parts of the city as well as in spain.

>> the appeal of the excelsior district to coffee shop owner leah was in the history of this neighborhood, a chance to add her family story to one of the diverse communities in the city. >> i wanted to settle and lay roots and a foundation for myself as a woman of color, a multiracial background, and i have kids now. >> when she and her husband saw the chance to build a business here, offering a coffee shop experience no one else was providing on this block, they went for it. >> if we don't do it, someone else might. at least we can represent the cultures where we come from and do it our way. >> almost 5 years later, it is having an impact. some of their first customers are still loyal. the even own shirts that celebrate excelsior coffee. >> we love it. it is a very vibrant neighborhood. tons of

families here and a super diverse group of people. >> when the opportunity to get some help to dress up the storefront on mission street came to businesses like layoffs, many jumped at the chance. you can see the impact already next-door where restaurant has new exteriors and interiors thanks to the free paik neighborhood design project. the company uses a.i. to help designers create renderings for the revitalization work it is doing on the street. >> to have a beautiful storefront or assets that help cultivate that brand, it is only going to uplift other people and garner attention and curiosity. >> the goal is to bring more people to the neighborhood, making it a place residents and visitors can gather while also increasing business through the store. leah says for some shops, their façade tells their story and has to do the work of a website they may not have up and running yet. >> i feel like this is a

neighborhood that is the last real san francisco. >> a new look for an old soul in the city that residents and business owners believe has a charming character worth preserving. on this block, we can see some of the businesses that have already benefited from this project and others that still hope to be a part of it. excelsior coffee is one of those and it is coming at a time where they hope to expand by becoming a roaster as well as adding more food and drink options to their location. also in san francisco, the city's most talked about toilet is now open for business, so to speak. this bathroom opened up to the public in know we valley's townsquare this week. you might remember this toilet making headlines over its estimated price tag of $1.7 million. that is the cost of a house. the official amount came to around $200,000. residents say the bathroom is in a great location but they are split on whether it was fully worth the price. >> i understand that creating

a fortified structure that can withstand public use potentially costs a little bit of money but it is a small little bathroom. >> it is great. it is clean. dysfunctional. it is useful. >> the city says the price tag dropped after they received contributions from a company. this weekend, townsquare will be holding an event to celebrate the grand opening of the bathroom. taking a live look at chase center right now as the warriors' season comes to a close after they lost to the sacramento kings 118-94 in the play in tournament last night. today, the team thanked dub nation for sticking with them. the warriors finish with a 46-36 record, ending up tent in the western conference. >> the biggest challenge, just putting everything in perspective. knowing that there will be ups and there will be

downs. >> how much of a priority is it for you to stay with this organization and the long-term? >> i love it here. i love it here. like i said, i love it here and the rest of the things -- >> last year, 46 wins would have gotten us higher in the playoffs. teams were a lot better, a lot more competitive. people really try to win. >> the warriors will head into the off-season with lots of question marks, the big one being, what does the future hold for klay thompson? with his free agency looming, the warriors will have to make a really tough decision. it is a business but his coaches and teammates are on his side. coach kerr said he means a lot to the franchise and they would have him back. curry saying he could never see himself without draymond green and thompson by him side -- his side. green also chimed in saying he does

not think thompson is leaving. during his exit interview today, klay thompson said he's still not sure what the future holds this off-season. there is a bright spot for two members of the warriors' organization. head coach steve kerr will coach team usa in the paris olympics this summer and steph curry will play. this is steph 's first appearance in the olympic games. coach kerr was an assistant on the 20 when doing it -- 2021 team that won gold in tokyo. joining curry on the roster, lebron james and anthony davis of the lakers, kevin durant, joel embiid. and, anthony edwards of the minnesota timberwolves, jayson tatum and jrue holiday from the boston celtics, sam abrego of the miami heat and tyrese halliburton of the indiana pacers and kawhi leonard of the clippers. they will play serbia first on july 28. what a team,
