death and destruction across the country's midsection. one town in complete ruins. the race to close in on a hostage deal. secretary of state antony blinken arrives in the middle east, his seventh diplomatic mission to the region since the start of the israel-hamas war. where things stand. and campus crackdowns. fights and arrests mark a weekend of unrest as colleges nationwide struggle to quell antiwar demonstrations. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning people in the plains are assessing the damage and vowing to rebuild after a weekend of violent weather, tornadoes roaring across more than a dozen states. the hardest hit, oklahoma. it took -- rather, take a look at this devastation. businesses and homes reduced to rubble. at least four deaths confirmed in the state including an infant. the small city of sulphur, home to 5,000 and 85 miles southeast of oklahoma city, took a direct

hit. that is where cbs' omar villafranca is with a look at the destruction. large tornado confirmed on the ground. moving north just south of sulphur. >> reporter: violent storms ravaged oklahoma. the small city of sulphur devastated after taking a direct hit. >> downtown sulphur is destroyed. >> reporter: at sunrise the widespread damage revealed. the tornado shredding buildings, turning them into piles of metal and brick. 19-year-old addy gordon was helping out at the local steakhouse when she heard sirens and ran for cover. >> as we were running to get to the basement, the glass is shattering out of the windows, and it's just like -- a bomb went off. >> reporter: at any point were you scared? >> i screamed. i thought i was going to pee myself. >> it's so much worse in person. just so hard to wrap your mind around. >> reporter: dana vanderver and donna lewis' business was wiped out one day after the store's

grand opening. >> too soon to even think about it really. don't know what we'll do. >> reporter: dozens of tornadoes ripped through the plains this weekend impacting millions. in the city of marietta near the texas-oklahoma border, a tornado carved a canyon through this dollar tree warehouse. the preliminary report from the national weather service says this was an ef3 tornado, meaning wind speed of at least 136 miles per hour. 12 counties in oklahoma are under a state of emergency, and residents say cleanup here could take weeks. omar villafranca, cbs news, sulphur, oklahoma. well now to the middle east. there has been a flurry of activity aimed at reaching an agreement on a cease-fire in gaza and securing the release of hostages being held by hamas. secretary of state antony blinken arrived in saudi arabia this morning before his stop in israel on tuesday. president biden spoke with israeli prime minister benjamin

netanyahu yesterday, warning once again about an israeli assault on the city of rafah. cbs' tina kraus joins us now from london with the latest on all of this. good morning, tina. >> reporter: anne-marie, good morning. secretary of state antony blinken arrived in saudi arabia's capital city of riyadh this morning at the start of a new crisis tour aimed at securing an elusive israel-hamas cease-fire. the push is part of a plan to get hostages out of gaza and more humanitarian aid in to palestinian civilians caught in the crossfire. anger over israel's failure to bring hostages home is spilling onto the streets with israelis stepping up protests to pressure prime minister benjamin netanyahu to cut a cease-fire deal with hamas. >> my heart breaks for us, for the hostages and their families, and also for gaza. >> reporter: antiwar clashes are also continuing to break out on college campuses across the u.s.

with israeli and palestinian supporters shouting slogans and insults. secretary of state antony blinken flew into saudi arabia this morning on his seventh visit to the region since the war began nearly seven months ago. arriving hours after president biden had a phone call with prime minister benjamin netanyahu about israel's possible ground assault on rafah. palestinian president mahmoud abbas says an israeli attack on the southen city where more than a million civilians are taking refuge would be the biggest catastrophe in the history of the palestinian people. he's urging the u.s. to convince israel to call it off. the biden administration is pushing israel to boost humanitarian aid. israel says it's a top priority. >> food, water, medical supplies, shelter equipment, and other aid, more of it is going into gaza than ever before. >> reporter: but with the clock kicking on a cease-fire there's concern getting hostages out of

the hands of hamas could be an even tougher battle. a hamas delegation will be in egypt today to respond to israel's latest proposal for a long-sought hostage release deal. diplomats in the region say talks toward an urgency spire are progressing. >> thank you so much. over the weekend hamas released new updated propaganda video of two hostages being held in gaza. it shows 64-year-old american keith siegel and 47-year-old israeli omari moron. they spoke about not being able to celebrate passover. a u.s. official tells cbs news the fbi is reviewing the proof-of-life video. this comes after hamas released another hostage video just last week. siegel's niece appeared yesterday on "face the nation." >> i do think that these two videos are a signal from hamas deal and a reminder that there are american citizens being held including -- including keith.

>> reporter: more than 130 people are believed to be held hostage in gaza including five u.s. citizens. and the antiwar protests on college campuses show no signs of slowing down with more arrests over the weekend. at ucla fights broke out yesterday between pro-israeli and pro-palestinian demonstrators when a barrier meant to keep both sides apart was breached. there was some pushing and shoving until campus police armed with batons separated the groups. cbs' mark strassmann has the story. >> reporter: the clamor on campus keeps spreading. a clash of more than ideas. riot gear at ohio state. tasers at emory university in atlanta. mostly pro-palestinian protesters at times scuffling with police waved on by school administrators with hundreds of arrests. communities like the university of texas turning on each other.

israel's war on hamas has another frontline -- [ chants ] >> reporter: a free speech and hate speech campus debate that's anything but academic. >> if you want to protect free speech, you don't break up peaceful protests. >> people didn't seem to be aware of how bad the situation for free speech and academic freedom already was on campus until october 7th. >> reporter: the foundation for individual rights and expression is a group defending the right to free speech. do you have a sense that any of this is moving the ball forward? >> some of the ways the protests have gone going on college campuses has been alienating more of the public. >> reporter: on columbia university's west lawn, civil disobedience. this ongoing tent city galvanized national protests. they want the university to divest investments in israel and companies they say profit off repression of palestinians.

dueling protests at columbia, pro-israel, pro-palestinian, reflect a larger welter of opinion and emotion, passion and perceived prejudice. >> people would be up in arms and protesting that right away, but because it's the jews, i feel like nobody cares. >> reporter: all this coast-to-coast commotion is well into its second week. what began here at columbia has now rippled overseas. from paris to london, university students occupied buildings and marched in the streets. they're echoing this u.s. student movement, at times a moment that's been unflattering, even dark, from intolerant protesters to stumbling universities. >> a lot of campuses are teaching young people to think like activists and less like scholars. when you're reduced to just shouting at each another, that is a failure of some of the things that makes higher education so special. >> reporter: mark strassmann, cbs news, new york. pro-palestinian protesters

were also out in force saturday night in washington, d.c., outside the annual white house correspondents' association dinner. hundreds of demonstrators greeted guests in tuxes and gowns as they made their way into the washington hilton. inside president biden roasted the presumptive presidential nominee donald trump. >> 2024 election is in full swing. and yes, age is an issue. i'm a grown man running against a 6-year-old. "florida with today" says houston texans wide receiver tank dell and nine others were shot and wounded at a waterside bar. in a social media post he wrote dell was suspended from a minor wound and released from the hospital.

it happened after a verbal fight during a private event in florida yesterday. a 16-year-old suspect had been charged with attempted murder and other crimes. the "associated press" says u.s. intelligence officials have determined that russian president vladimir putin did not order the death of appropriation -- opposition leader alexei navalny. an official speaking on the condition of anonymity says the u.s. intelligence community did not find a smoking gun that put -- that putin was aware of the timing of navalny's death or ordered it. he died mysteriously in february at a remote penal colony. and npr says that rod rosenstein was hospitalized after -- harvey weinstein was hospitalized, and his attorney says he is a train wreck health wise and is undergoing a battery of tests. weinstein is due in court yesterday after a new york appeals court overturned his 2026 crime conviction.

auto plant, and elon musk makes a surprise trip to china. here matt pieper with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: stocks had their first winning week in the last four, and their biggest weekly gain since november. friday's numbers, the dow gained 153, nasdaq up 316, s&p taking in 51 points. elon musk heads to china. it's to show off new electric vehicles at the beijing auto show. chinese automakers and startups have launched a bevy of electric cars some going head to head with tesla and undercutting the american maker on price. a chinese leader told musk he hopes the u.s. will work more with china on win-win cooperation. sticking with vehicles, strike averted. the united autoworkers union struck a last minute deal with daimler truck so its 7,000 workers are not going on strike. the four-year agreement covers workers at various block grants in north carolina where daimler makes thomas-built buses, freight liner, and western star trucks, as well as distribution centers in atlanta and memphis.
