right now on the afternoon edition, protests against war in gaza continue to grow on college campuses across the country. in the bay area at a time many students are studying for finals. good afternoon. i am ryan yamamoto. sonoma state university is the latest school where demonstrators have set up

camp to protest the war in gaza. the tents went up this weekend. students want the school to disclose investments, create a curriculum on palestinian history and permanent cease fire. the school did respond with a statement saying sonoma state university is primarily concerned with three things during such events. safety of students, faculty, staff, visitors, supporting right to free expression by our community and minimizing disruption to the teaching, learning, working taking place on campus. students say that statement is not enough. they want direct action from the university. >> it seems sonoma state's tactic is to kind of ignore us and use our oppositional movement, like, to kind of coop as a messaging for the school to say we support students while not doing any of our demands. >> students say they plan to stay in place until all demands are met. in other parts of the

country encampments continue to grow despite repeated efforts to shut them down. peaceful protests have become violent at some schools. elise preston has more. >> reporter: ucla was one of the latest flash points between pro palestinian and pro israeli demonstrators. physical altercations took place but no injuries were reported. officials moved to drastically reinforce barricades and railings. across the country, authorities detained 100 people at northeastern university in boston. pro palestinian student demonstrators are calling for their schools to divest from companies that do business with israel. >> the current operations are place blatantly war crimes.

>> reporter: they say promoting anti-semitism and ignoring held hostages. >> if you want peace like we do and want a cease fire, hostages need to be released and at the fore front of this discussion. >> reporter: as commencement day approaches for many students, administrators at public and private schools are scrambling to find ways forward. at columbia university where the first encampment still stands, commencement still hangs in the balance. >> i don't view it as much of a loss if we don't have a graduation, especially with what they're trying to fight for. >> intense negotiations underway in the middle east in israel and hamas negotiate potential cease fire to stop the fighting and free hostages. the secretary of state is expected to be in israel tomorrow. this is his seventh visit since the war began

nearly seven months ago. president joe biden had a phone call with the prime minister benjamin netanyahu about israel's possible ground assault on rafah. israeli officials are concerned that international criminal court can issue arrest warrants against the country's leaders alleging war crimes. israel's foreign ministry says it has informed missions around the world that warrants may be imminent. the foreign minister says any such warrants would, quote, provide moral boost to hamas and other militant groups. icc has not commented. continuing coverage of what's happening and protests on college campuses stay with us on air and our website at kpix.com and streaming on the free news app. as bay area looks to bounce back on difficulty, the focus is on small businesses. in oakland the amount of foot

traffic was up by more than 20%. da lin spoke to small businesses trying to get foot traffic in their doors. >> reporter: at this downtown oakland bar, it is wine with a twist. >> women only make up 5% of the industry. and people of color make up probably 3% and black producers make up 1%. the wine industry is a multi billion dollar industry. what i wanted to do is reverse engineer the industrynd provide retail space specifically for the under represented wine makers and give them a platform. >> reporter: this business owner says all the wines are made by women and people of color. >> i wanted to bring the wine country, napa and sonoma, to oakland. >> reporter: the wine shop and bar opened at the corner of 13th and webster streets in december 2022. alicia says business initially got off to a very strong start.

>> with the crime, my business has decreased in sales but it is slowly trending upward now that the spring and summer is coming. >> reporter: as oakland celebrates and kicks off small business week, many owners say the biggest challenge is crime. some experienced repeated burglaries and robberies. >> it has impacted my business in the sense that customers are afraid to come to oakland. i have had to invest thousands and thousands of dollars in marketing to get customers to come. >> reporter: elected leaders say they hear them and are working to reduce crime. during the small business week, the city will host free classes and networking events. this workshop on sunday focused on digital marketing. >> i am somebody who is getting started. so i am very new. i am trying to figure out what social media platforms to leverage, how to get your content out there. >> i work on my business, on my website. i want to improve social media image.

>> i am more of an artist but because it's my business, i have to wear all the hats. so i came to learn more about what goes into those. >> reporter: many say they chose to invest in the city. despite challenges they believe in oakland. >> what adds color and vibrancy to the city is the small businesses and the people behind the businesses. >> reporter: alicia agrees and says thriving businesses is a reflection of a thriving city. >> increased safety, invest in security. i think that's number one. i think safety is the ultimate concern because customers are not going to come if their cars are being broken into. >> business owners continue to urge people outside of oakland to shop and dine here. some businesses will reimburse lyft and uber rides with a purchase. >> as for how other cities are fairing, businesses to downtown dropped more than 21% between march last year and this february. san jose saw a jump

a big clean up effort underway after a deadly storm system left a path of devastation in the middle of the country over the weekend. more than 100 tornadoes were reported across six states on friday alone with more storms on saturday and sunday. at least five people were killed. the storm system spawned a slew of tornadoes across the plains including nebraska where parts of omaha were leveled. in oklahoma tornadoes destroyed homes and businesses. >> you come upstairs and see that you have no house emerging from the basement. you are home

but you are homeless. >> 12 counties in oklahoma are under state of emergency. power is out to thousands. crews are working around the clock trying to restore that. residents say it could be weeks or maybe months before things get back to normal. back to our first alert weather, a live look outside looking at the golden gate bridge, it's much calmer on the west coast. let's check back in. we are warming up a lot. we are already off to a great start. 70s into the santa clara valley near san jose and los gatos. 70s in the east bay too. our micro climates are doing something different today. 50s near half moon bay, bodega bay. here is the reason why. we have gusty conditions this afternoon along the coastline with wind speeds expected around 40 miles per hour just in the next hours or so from bodega bay to half

moon bay. that will be the case into the evening hours tonight. breezy conditions around the corner along the coast. it is not so much in inland areas but let's pick on the inland areas a little bit. today we are in the 70s which is great. but we will warm up to the 80s as high pressure moves in warming us and drying us throughout this week's forecast just to see a cool down this weekend. how do we go from 80s to 60s? a cold front will move in into our weekend forecast. as we look at rain chances they start to increase as that moves its way in. not by much but we will keep a close eye on the totals especially closer to our friday, saturday, sunday forecast because there could be big changes around the corner. let's start with taking a look at the next seven days in inland areas specifically. we know we have the nice warm up in the forecast but we have plenty sunshine to accompany it. this is a great week to get out there and do fun outdoor activities especially in inland areas just to see cooler,

cloudier conditions this weekend. it isn't the worse. we could be dodging light showers here and there. into the bay closer to san francisco and oakland, we will experience that warm up too. not to the 80s necessarily but we get pretty dang close. we are talking about 70s wednesday and thursday and then 60s and cloudy skies into saturday. california has a plan to phase out sale of new gasoline only vehicles by 2035. before we can go all electric, people need places to charge their cars. that just got a little easier, tesla opening fast chargers to nontesla vehicles. california officials call it a game changer and those who own electric vehicles say this will go a long way to increase accessibility. >> if you have an electric vehicle and say you live in an apartment where they don't have electric vehicle charging as part of the parking lot or whatever parking facilities they have, then you rely on the public charging station.

there is a major push for women to join the first responders in the bay area. it is important on so many levels. the berkeley fire department, they camp to put women in power as firefighters. >> history has taught us when it comes to being a first responder, ability matters more than gender. >> i was definitely not expecting this. i was more expecting a class environment. >> reporter: if areli thought she would spend the weekend in the classroom, she got a surprise when she found herself in turn outs climbing a 30-foot

ladder. >> i started to panic and i was going to stop. i told myself i could do it and i came here for a reason. >> reporter: she's one of three dozen young women invited to first in fire camp sponsored by berkeley fire department. the purpose was to recruit more women to the fire service but the first challenge is convincing them that they can do it. >> a lot of the firefighters, either their dad, brother, uncle did it too. a lot of times, if you don't physically see it as a woman or as anybody, you may not know that's something you can do. that's what we are trying to explore. this is do-able. these are some of the skills we do. this is how you can practice, how you can get better. it's just the introduction. >> reporter: that introduction included hands on instruction in the use of a chain saw, proper technique for exiting a building on to a ladder, basic emergency medical skills

including cpr and splinting injured limbs. none of it he was easy especially for beginners. positive reinforcement from veteran firefighters, most of them women, helped a lot. >> the women in the fire service do the recruitings and they see the real life example. this is another one where it is real life example of them teaching them what to do and they are getting motivated. >> reporter: london price seemed motivated realizing she could lug a heavy fire hose up and down two flights of stairs may have rekindled a desire to become a firefighter. >> when i was younger, i thought about it only because i got hyper fixated. i have was like that's going to be me. then it died. but now it is me. >> reporter: they say people come to the fire service for different reasons. for arieli it is a desire to help people in need. that includes her own parents. >> i am glad i came. i learned a lot of things. i do want to make this into a career. >> it would mean a lot for me

but mostly for my parents. they came with nothing and i want to give them everything they couldn't give me. >> this would mean a lot to them as well as to yourself. >> yeah. >> reporter: the goal is to get more young women into the academies. camps like this help them realize that they do belong there. >> there is still a lot to do. women only make up about 14% of the berkeley fire department staff. next, another major milestone for taylor swift. how her latest album is breaking records in the charts only a week after its release. we take those headlines a step further to sort of connect all the wonderful communities. >> really embracing the positivity and hopefully
