the entire uc system has handled pro palestinian protests. the university argues the strike is illegal in the first place, but the students are not backing down, even blocking off the main entrance and setting up a new encampment. our kevin ko reports from the campus in santa cruz. >> it's going to be hardship, but i think in terms of why we are out here, we're saying that we want divestment now. that's in the power of the uc. they can do that and we're waiting on that. >> reporter: uc santa cruz is in the thick of its spring quarter, final exams in three weeks, but uaw 4811, the union representing about 2,000 uc santa cruz grad student workers say if their final demands aren't met, they'll stay out of class on strike. uc officials responded by filing an unfair labor practice or ulp with the state stating the

strike is illegal and unlawful. uc santa cruz executive vice chancellor releasing this statement which read in part, "the university of california disagrees with the union's position and views this work stoppage as unlawful and in violation of the clear terms of the collective bargaining agreements between the parties which prohibits strikes, work stoppages, and any other concerted activities that interfere directly or indirectly with university operation." grad student worker jennifer calls the statement by the uc disappointing. >> i do believe that we should have a safe environment where we can definitely protest without fearing that the uc police or even the city police are going to attack and arrest and have very serious consequences for those students. >> reporter: union workers are accusing the university of california of allowing violent attacks on pro palestine protesters by both outside agitators and police. this

encampment sweep at ucla followed by arrests sparked outrage across uc santa cruz. >> to come in and sweep the encampment with that amount of violence, i had colleagues, some of them who are not american citizens, who spent the night in jail. this is really a shame on the uc and to not offer amnesty and sit down on the table and actually talk about divestment is on the wrong side of history, quite frankly. >> reporter: associate professor davis teaches history, but plans to be on the front lines as union workers accuse uc of unfair labor practices. that includes the claim that the uc violated policy by summoning police to eject and arrest university employees engaged in political speech. in response to claims of violence at other campuses, uc officials stated, "when protests violate university policy or threaten the safety and security of others, the university has taken lawful action to end impermissible and
5:03 pm
unlawful behavior." students say the university's decision to deem the strike illegal won't make them leave. >> our strike is supposed to be today until june 30th. >> reporter: that also means the strike will coincide with commencement ceremonies set for mid-june. >> the local chapter of the jewish community relations council is asking school officials to quickly end the strike. they sent us a statement saying in part, "today's strike does more than result in canceled classes. it makes jewish students feel targeted and deeply unwelcome. these students feel there is no safe place for them on campus." you may remember back in 2020 uc santa cruz fired more than 50 grad student workers who went on strike for higher pay because of the high cost of living. as part of that strike, those workers withheld fall quarter grades, but unlike today's strike, the 2020 strike was not supported by their union. as for the war in

decide whether to issue the arrest warrants and allow a case to move forward. a decision could come in two months. new video of a helicopter rescue in the north bay, the sheriff's office captured this footage as a crew locketted located a crashed car and then its driver outside bringing him to safety. here's more on how this whole thing happened. >> 911 dispatchers got a call about this crash through the car's automated crash notification system from the side of a cliff, no word from the driver or where they might be. so finding both the car and driver was the challenge in steep and rocky terrain. this is footage from the sonoma county sheriff's department sunday morning near jewel gulch north of jenner on highway 1. the sheriff's office got the call around 8:00 and they sent a helicopter to search. they found the vehicle about an hour later here about 200 feet from the roadway above with the

driver nowhere in sight. >> initially we thought they may have just been ejected and were in close proximity of the car, but it was heavily treed around there and the car was very unstable and i could see the car moving from the helicopter. >> with the helicopter unable to reach the cliff's ravines and the deputy unable to hop ledge to ledge, this is how they had to search. the deputy hooked up and dangled from below the chopper giving them two different views. they finally found that driver about 300 feet from where they found the car. >> i was kind of thinking the worst, this was probably going to be a recovery just based on the amount of time, condition of the wreckage and as soon as the rotor wash hit him and the wind hit him, he kind of looked up at us and was putting his hand out like i need help and it was like okay. he's alive. >> they were able to fly this man to safety. he is now in the hospital in critical condition, but he is expected to survive.
5:07 pm
they say this was not a technique they've ever used before to reach a victim, but that every rescue is different along the california coast. >> thank goodness they were there. thank you. iran's president and foreign minister died in a helicopter crash. the deaths could have an impact on that country's internal politics, but it's unlikely to change iran's aggressive stance against the u.s. and the west. erika brown has more details from the white house. >> reporter: mourners filled the streets in iran monday after learning their president, ebrahim raisi, and foreign minister were found dead in the wreckage of a helicopter crash. this man said, "this truly great it calamity has descended upon us like a burning thunderbolt." in other parts of the world iranian exiles pointed to raisi's history of brutally suppressing protesters. >> inside of iran they are
5:08 pm
very, very happy today. they celebrate also inside iran because he killed all of our people. >> reporter: supreme court leader ayatollah ali khomeini quickly named an interim president who held his first cabinet meeting. iran has been at the center of crises around the world and that's unlikely to change with raisi's death. >> we will continue to confront the iranian regime's support of terrorism and prolific weapons and nuclear program. >> reporter: at least one iranian official blamed the u.s. for the crash saying sanctions kept from them buying helicopter parts. >> the united states had no part to play in that crash. >> reporter: the u.s. issued condolences for raisi's death even as the administration blames him for trampling on human rights. >> the state department says iran asked for help in the search and recovery efforts following the helicopter crash

and america was willing to provide that support, but logistical reasons prevented it from happening. developing news in the bay, a federal judge moved to reopen the sentencing of david depape, the man convicted of breaking into nancy pelosi's san francisco home and attacking her husband with a hammer. he was sentenced to 30 years in prison last week, but there was a court error. the judge didn't offer depape a chance to speak during his sentencing. so a new hearing is slated for later this month. now to san jose where an officer-involved shooting left one man in the hospital with life threatening injuries. this happened yesterday in the area of kolmar drive. when officers arrived at the scene, they were met with gunfire. this video shows a man stepping outside a car shooting a gun. >> the potential for a mass tragedy last night was immense. this apartment complex was filled with people enjoying a

of the accusations ventura made last november in a now settled lawsuit that alleged combs physically and sexually abused her for years during their relationship. at least five other people came forward in the weeks after ventura accusing combs of sexual assault, physical abuse, and forced druggings. those lawsuits are still pending. combs posted online in december, "let me be absolutely clear. i did not do any of the awful things being alleged." in march law enforcement raided combs' mansions in california and florida as part of a federal investigation being handled by a team that deals with human trafficking. combs continued to deny all claims of wrongdoing until posting this in response to the security video sunday. >> i'm not asking for forgiveness. i'm truly sorry. >> reporter: ventura's attorney called combsally words combs'

words disingenuous. the l.a. county district attorney's office said no case related to the attack in the scooter video was brought to law enforcement and added it is now outside the statute of limitations, but legal experts say it could still be used in other civil cases against combs. >> if the video were shown in court, that would way very heavily on a jury's mind and so i think for the other accusers this video gives at least out of court an enormous amount of credence to their claims. >> if you or someone you know is in an abusive relationship, you can call the national domestic violence hotline at 1-800-799-safe. you can also text start to 88788 or visit thehotline.org. wildfires burning in canada are triggering air quality alerts and warnings in the u.s. thousands of canadians are
