(glass breaking noise) break. before that.dozens of i counted 35 rounds fired in 12 seconds. this was the second shooting scene. just minutes after the suspect killed the two detectives at his nearby home. we'll play the video for you again. hah of it down. this officer has crime tape that he hasn't even put up yet. felt this was a very chaotic scene. you can deceive the swatlooks like he might he turning up his radio. there were officers place. a male here looks to be to be covering him. and residents in the area were escoreted away as soon some violent, tense moments yesterday afternoon in santa cruz.

>> pam: we now have new information on how the murder of the police officers, and the suspect. played out. dan kerman is live tonight know? >> reporter: the officers could not go very far because they had boxed him in. the sheriff's department officer said that after he shot it down the officers, he fled the scene. this is helicopter partner chefs surveillance from the b.c. 7. he was dressed for battle. >> he was wearing body armor. trying to determine where that was coming from. there is a possibility that he came from standard police the equipment that could have come from one of the vehicles of the police vehicles. or he could have put supplied it himself how. >> reporter: he was killed

information about the cop past. kron4's justine waldman in santa cruz -- justine, what have you uncovered? >> reporter: we have learned that this man has a very long criminal history. here are some of the many mug shots of jeremy goulet. the 35-year old has a long criminal record.goulet was arrested this past friday in santa cruz for misdeminor public intoxication. he bailed out. goulet worked at this coffee house. reports claim he broke into a co-workers house and tried to assualt her. he then was fired from the kind grind on saturday. goulet was arrested in 2007 in portland oregon for attempted murder. here is video from where it happened. he was accused of peeping on a 22-year-old woman as she showered. prosecutors accused goulet of removing a screen and using a stick to part the bathroom blinds to get a better view. reports state, goulet

admitted on the stand that he liked to videotape unsuspecting women on his cellphone in his free-time but. he was found guilty of invasion of privacy and unlawful possession of firearm. a jury acquitted him of trying to kill the woman's boyfriend when his gun went off during a struggle. he was detained in 2008 for violating the terms of his release and he served 1 year jail sentence. goulet has also been arrested in other cities in california for peeping, prowling and being drunk in public. long time coffee house customers. knew goulet. and tell me he gave off a strange vibe. bill o fremontplymouhe was strad not offer any information about himself. >> reporter: his father said that he was a ticking time

bomb. justin waldman, kron 4. >> pam: new. kron 4 has uncovered the killers ties to the bay area. at one point. he lived and worked in berkeley -- this was his home. coming up at six -- we'll take you to his former place of work. then at eight -- we'll hear from former neighbors who say they are not surprised. >> tonight we are learning more about the officers killed. detective seargent loren baker went by the name 'butch'. the santa cruz police force. he leaves behind a wife and two daughters.and a son. for the department as a co and -- detective elizabeth butler -- a ten year veteran -- she has two young sons. police say -- sgt. loren baker, who went by the nickname butch -- a 28-year veteran of the force. leaves behined his wife -- two daughters -- and a son who

works with santa cruz police as a community service officer. kron4 caught up with one man who knew baker. detective elizabeth butler -- was a 10-year veteran of the force. butler was assigned to investigations. she leaves behind her partner and two young sons, ages five and one. police chief kevin vogel worked with both butler and baker. right now -- a vigil outside the santa cruz police department. is growing. and hear from people who developing right now -- crews in san francisco working to clean up this mess. a water main break that left cars underwater in san francisco. we'll show you the stunning damage -- after the break. to be a done deal. multiple sources saying alex smith is headed to the chiefs. the niners get the chiefs second round draft pick in april's draft.that's the 34th pick in the draft. the 49ers also get a draft pick in next year's draft. this marks the end of a roller- coaster ride for smith in san francisco. there were huge expectations for the #1 overall pick in the 2005 draft. he spent eight years with niners. smith was initially labeled a bust, but reserructed his career when jim harbaugh took over in 20-11. smith led the niners to the n-f-c championship game last year. but mid-way through this season the 29-year old suffered a concussion and lost the starting job to rising star colin now smith will get to start

murder of two police officers. santa cruz. investigating a sex crime -- when gunfire broke out. once the officers were dead -- the suspect took their guns and stole their car. the suspect was then later killed by other officers. he wearing body armor. the murdered officers are seargant loren baker -- and detective elizabeth butler. baker, went by the nickname 'butch' -- he was a 28-year veteran of the department. and leaves behined his wife. two daughters and a son. butler was a 10-year veteran of the force who specialized in investigating sexual assault cases. she leaves behind two young children here is what we now know about the killer -- jeremy goulet. he was a coffee shop worker. his father says he had numerous run-ins with the law and swore he would never go back to jail. adding -- the goulet was a ticking time bomb. we'll have more from the father tonight on kron-4 news at eight. kron4's mike pelton was at growing memorial for the officers today. and talked to a few people who knew them personally. community members added to this growing of memorial. the flags are at half staff. they both believe behind

families. mr. baker leaves behind his wife, two daughters and a sound. elizabeth butler was a 10 year veteran leaving behind a husband and her two sons. i caught up with these two people that knew them. >> it is devastating. i am completely lost for words and my heart goes out to the family. i cannot begin to feel what they are feeling and he made a huge impact on my life. i will always be grateful. i will never forget. he was a really good man. >> i knew butler and i've seen baker around all my life. it is hard to except the fact that this all happen to. if on the front door of this police department. the police

northeast. in kansas -- the powerful winter storm pounded about three-to-four feet of wet snow on the roof of a macys store. fears that the roof would collapse under the heavy snow-- the store was evacuated. workers called authorities wednesday morning after noticing sagging ceiling tiles inside. and students in iowa are now being blamed for a crash that injured more than 20 people-- all because of a snowball fight. police say the students threw snow at a school bus in sioux city, causing the driver to stop abruptly. that's when a city transit bus rear-ended the school bus. those injured suffered mostly bumps and bruises. and one child was taken to the hospital as a
