looks good and no problems into foster city, the richmond sandra fell hot spot free a nice drive on 5.80 west to the north bay at 7 minutes traits. >>all right, thank you very much rob and time now is 5 oh one and happening today. we are remembering the great loma prieta earthquake. it happened 30 years ago on this very day. the epicenter was in the santa cruz mountains but it caused devastation across the entire bay area. and as you can see some of this video sections of the upper deck of the old bay bridge came crashing down on the road surface below. >>dozens of people were killed thousands were injured it was the biggest quake to hit the bay area in nearly a 100 years. >>and since then we've recovered and learned a lot. >>yeah, in fact today an annual event which has become tradition is being held to teach people about earthquake safety and kron 4 sarah stinson actually live in san francisco with more on the shakeout drills sarah. >>how great is this that we have annual shakeout drill on the 30th anniversary of the loma prieta earthquake because

this day is still in the minds of so many people across the bay area. people take it seriously they remember that day. that means maybe more people will do this trail is trolls really important because it's for you to pretend like a real earthquake is happening. actually be prepared when it does happen and a lot earthquakes this week and i've heard people tell me what they did when it happened and a lot of people told me they just looked around and they were saying was shaking and they just sat there, but what you need to do is drop. and today during that drill it starts at 1017 here on october 17th. you need to be able to remember that. you are standing on the street. what you're going to do so joining us now is mark. and tell us here at the get. >>with the earthquake country

going to show you that coming up in the 6 o'clock hour from now i'm live in san francisco sarah stinson kron. >>always fascinating see that shake room works so be looking for for that thank you sarah with the anniversary there's an earthquake warning alert that is now available to everybody in california through a smartphone app developed at u c berkeley yeah, it's the app is called the my shakes us will need to look for when you download it and it produces based on the state's shake alert system. it doesn't necessarily predict earthquakes, but it does detect at least the start of them and likely have said it will give you least maybe a second or 2 warning just so that you're not started suppose when the shaking actually start your phone go off color you about to feel some shaking. >>and then it pushes education, it happens when the earthquake started it will it detects the those initial waves that start to happen down below ground, maybe we can't feel feel old yet right. those are those precursor ways and then the the real waves that cause the shaking. >>propagate throughout the area so they're actually saying you can download this app. and then you can also use

>>kron four's will tran national treasure island right now with more on what happened 30 years ago today will. >>what happened the easter span right behind me broke and but cold so we have a new span in direct correlation to the earthquake because they want to make sure that it is safe moving forward the earthquake struck exactly 5 oh 4 30 years ago tonight and by the time it was over 63 people were killed 38 100 others injured. it did damage all across the bay area fires broke out throughout the city parts of freeways buckled and broke including the eastern span. we do know that they learned from that and that's why they start a rebuilding many of the buildings and structures all all over the bay area, including the eastern span. now i can tell you the eastern span started construction, 13 years after loma prieta it took 11 years to finish at a

cost of billion. but according to caltrans and they obviously thought about the 19 oh 6 earthquake, the 1989 earthquake. they say it know it sounds weird in counter intuitive but they say when another major earthquake hits is actually safe to be on the bridge. if you're on the bay bridge. >>the bridge is going to move a fair amount in a very large scale earthquake. but you shouldn't worry because that's what it's been designed to do so basically when you see earthquake is that the bridge would move and the tower that's up above you. it's actually made in for independent part so it can twist, it's ok and also you've seen the deck undulate move in waves, it's designed to do that and it will subside as the earthquake ends. >>as horrible as 90 earthquake 98 in earthquake was a could have been even deadlier because we all know the world series was in progress so the bay bridge at the time was a

lot lighter than normal because so many people that night we're at candlestick back to you, thanks a lot. well. >>well the 30th anniversary of loma prieta earthquake of course also brings back. memories of the deadly cypress structure collapse in oakland, 42 people were killed when that freeway collapse kron four's philly to call speaks with a retired firefighter who was among the first to respond. >>30 years after the cypress structure collapse the to dec freeway in oakland replaced with a green belt, no longer cypress street remains mandela parkway the rebuilt fire station number 3 located behind the cypress memorial that's where we met mark hoffman. he retired from the oakland fire department last year after more than 38 years of service eventually rising to the rank of chief. he was a lieutenant in 1989, when he and his crew of 4 were among the first responders to the cyprus saw a mushroom cloud.

70's for today's daytime highs more 's on the map today than not hayward at 68 san jose down to 69 while oakland also at 68, san francisco today at 67 degrees tomorrow going to be pretty similar to today, daytime highs range from the 60's to 70's again to start the weekend. saturday a few clouds a few sprinkles possible too sunday, we start to see temperatures on the rise and come monday tuesday and wednesday of next week. it's back to warmer weather with highs in the 80's, not just inland. but also right alongside the day. that's a look at your forecast robin how's traffic right now. >>not so bad just a little busy and a little foggy we're checking out a blurry san mateo bridge camera here on west 92, you can blame it on the drizzle you may be for headlights in the wipers driving in some areas out there this morning roads are a little damp to i noticed that i was driving to work so reduce your speed not bad here for 92, it's about a 13 minute trip off to the peninsula. we're checking the bay bridge and it just keeps stacking up

off and on in some of the cast lanes but this is a great trip coming hot spot. no problems 12 minutes that's really good to make it off to fremont street i want to take you over to 5.80 because we have a new crash right here wes 5 80 at hop yard and just moved off to the side you can see alex stacking up traffic a bit from santa rita leading up to the dublin interchange so 14 minutes because of that crash to make it from vasco in livermore to the 5 8680 split highway for picking up 16 minutes antioch to concord and you're fine on the nimitz and one oh one from san jose to menlo part back to you thanks a lot. >>and 5 18 in the east bay a close call for a mother and her twin babies. >>when a car crashed into their home. let's take a look there is launched right in the front of the home on lincoln avenue in alameda. the blue car went into the home there any other cars involved says so that launched a blue car into the home. and that's where the mother and her 2

babies were inside. went right in to the baby's room. both drivers involved in the crash. i do not and neither driver involved in the crash seems to be hurt. everybody in the house is ok but they sure are shaken up. it's lucky that no one was killed because this is a. >>very frequent you frequently use intersection for high school kids in elementary kids going to the school just down the street. so time of the morning. there's a lot of pedestrian traffic and we're just absolutely fortunate that no one was killed. >>sure are the families staying with another family member because they home has been deemed unsafe to live in. the father says that the mother and the twins are doing ok. very far as the fire. the new star facility in crockett fire crews say there's no more threat of a fire reigniting there. the next step now is to clean up the fuel storage facility where the fire broke out. and that cleanup will

include draining the containment ponds of the thousands of gallons of ethanol. that's in the ditches right now and then venting and jason tanks to relieve pressure. investigators. our remaining in charge of the facility as they search. they actually have a search warrant. they serve that search warrant on new star. it's standard procedure in these situations to get the in information they need to decide what caused the fire in the explosions. an accident. >>copper train yard left one bart train operator with a crushed leg, christian young was moving trains on to attract when she fell in her leg was caught between 2 cars and crushed. there's a 10 mile per hour limit on moving cars in that yard trains or move manually by propulsion machine workers tell us there are times in this process though when that rain can suddenly jolt and catch you off guard. but representative say they can talk about personnel matters. but we'll find out

more as investigation unfolds. well speaking of bart general manager robert powers is on a listening tour to hear directly from writers. it's part of his effort to find out what can be done to improve the transit system. yesterday he walked along the platform at the 12th street station in oakland you can see they're shaking hands, meeting people. he heard their complaints. everything from late trains to full trains fare evaders safety concerns he got an earful. the dirty conditions to are also top of mind for a lot of writers powers also got complements though about bart as well. >>another theme that i'm hearing as they everybody loves the new cars and get more the new cars out here very insightful so and it's going really help in the long run to make part a world class system. >>and the general manager plans to do this listening tour. every wednesday at different parts stations. throughout the new year. >>4 morning news people, san francisco neighborhood are putting up their own blockades

it's pulling back beyond west grand so just be prepared for that we're heading over to pasco road southbound bump reports of a car fire so coming out of britain would heading for byron that is backing up traffic and we do have crews on the way but it's slow in both directions all lanes open 5 the west at hop yard after a car very sluggish from santa rita 14 minutes and growing from vasco to the dublin interchange starting. thanks a lot rob. >>want to big story in the north a short elementary school in sandra fell is going to close after this kron four's christina live at that school now with more on the decision to shut it down christina. >>so is a decision made not just by to sandra fell city's schools, but also a large group of the parents and supporters of the school. they all say it has to do with attendance. but let's try show you exactly where we are here in sandra fell where the school is if you can tell here by this map. it's really odd

with in a bunch of residential areas right here, i'm not far from downtown and this is a school that had started short of 10 years ago because attendant was on the rise and they had to me kindergartners in the school district starting school so obviously they needed to make sure that they accommodated that also had a lot of transitional kindergarten students as well that were just slightly before that age. they wanted to make sure got into the school system. however, this has been this decision to shut down the school has been something that they have been working on in deciding on throughout the past. few months because as they said. sandra fell city schools has said that they have been measuring attendance as well as the incoming classes of kindergartners and there just simply aren't enough. students to really accommodate the space here. now i want to go read you a statement for a press release sent out by the school district's i'm going to read that in part right now we're also going to put that up on your screen for you so you can see that. so it says right here a statement from sandra fell city school. the board

staff and task force understand this is a very difficult decision that will impact students families and staff at the same time everyone wanted she wanted to be very mindful of how the size of a school can impact student learning family engagement and overall success of the school community. now right now short school currently has about 100 students and they have a transitional kindergarten and grades 2 through 5. so right now again they say they just don't have and that students will be coming into the school district to go ahead and accommodate the larger facility here the theater originally built for an influx of students coming in. so this is again a decision put on by sandra fell city schools as well as that task force i'd mention that was a group of parents has ball supporters of the school that made that decision just last night now step 2 of this process now that they have voted to go ahead and shut down the school is obviously to let parents and family snow that this is something that's going to

happen. they of course are going to finish out the school year. but another step they're going to make is really decide how they're going to use this building in this facility after this school year reporting live here in sandra fell christina tetreault kron 4 news. >>all right, thank you christina. it's 5.34. church is facing more legal trouble over new claims of child-sex abuse. 3 women has filed a new lawsuit against the church. because of a new bill that was just signed by the governor. the law extends the deadline for child sexual-assault victims to file a claim. one woman says she was abused 40 years ago when she was 11 years old by monsignor vincent breen who worked at holy spirit school in fremont police investigated but the charges were never brought against him back sen. the new law signed by the governor give survivors of child-sex assault regardless of their age a 3 year window to bring civil lawsuits against any

perpetrator. the 3 women in thase suits are asking for damages due to physical and mental pain and suffering. >>well people in one san francisco neighborhood are taking matters into their own hands, they're fed up with homeless drug addicts and dealers hanging around their neighborhood in fact a few weeks ago, someone put up plywood blocking access on this alleyway it connects a section of ocean avenue with the angle side terrace neighborhood and with the homes on both sides it meets up with better driver people who live there say that the pathways oftentimes littered with human waste and needles. and other debris. >>they exchange kind one needles but can for them. walking through all that ali now for him a few years, i'm afraid to i like to see this.

>>well the head of the department public works signed a director's order allowing that land to be sealed off at both ends by temporary locked gate so they're waiting for that installation. police are asking for your help now to find the driver responsible for hit and run it happened at the intersection of manor drive and paul meadow avenue on monday. the victim says she was hit by a white car while crossing the street. she wasn't seriously hurt thankfully. but pacifica police looked over surveillance video and they did see a white jeep cherokee or something similar at the scene during the hit and run. >>a developi story oakland raiders offensive tackle trent brown is being sued in civil court by his ex-girlfriend for domestic violence. she accuses him of repeatedly beating her up the espn reports this lawsuit was filed in alameda county. last week. and she accuses brown of slapping her punching her choking her multiple times, starting in 2018. they have a child

abortion pills, starting january of 2023. all university of california and california state university health centers will be required to provide access to abortion medication for students who wanted the new law will offer the abortion pills to students in the first 10 weeks of pregnancy for free. some students say the service is good reassurance but not everyone supports this plan. believe that belongs. and the proper hands, a little more monitored. >>and not as easily accessible. i don't have a car. so if i was ever in that situation and they had it i would be really grateful. like safe. they knew from only you know like really convenient. >>a u c davis a student group installed vending machines that dispense condoms pregnancy tests and morning after pills. but some other students say that that does not belong on campuses.

are expected to see ball through the course of the day your daytime highs are about to be the coolest they've been in a while even cooler than yesterday's 60's for san francisco and the coastal like coastline today, elsewhere we're still seeing a lot of 60's such as ride along the bay shore millbrae at 64 burlingame at 67. redwood city woodside and foster city all at 68 today, south bay noticeably cooler than yesterday's low 70's. highs today fall into the upper 60's for your highs, east bay temperatures 60's and 70's a similar to yesterday for dublin livermore but little cooler in areas like oakland berkeley and san leandro as for the north bay temperatures down into the 70's fairfield our warmest spot in only 74 degrees. you know it's a cool day. and that's the hottest temperature you've got mill valley at 69 while stinson beach in point raise similar to yesterday's highs in the low 60's. tomorrow, staying cool and staying pretty sunny. saturday a few clouds and maybe a few light sprinkles nothing much though sunday
