>> when fun time from t barea's you're watching kron. 4 news heading. >> now at 8, we are learning more tonight about the deadly stabbing at a high school in santa rosa. the grandmother of the student who was killed is identified him as 16 year-old jayden pm to a junior at the school. thank you for joining us tonight at 8. i'm pam moore and i'm catherine heenan in for ken wayne tonight. >> police say today's stabbing involved 3 teenagers inside a classroom. classes have been canceled at the high school for the rest of the week. tonight, the family of the student killed is demanding

have been fighting for weeks. >> parents called the school until the school of what happened in that they had made complaints that there was people that they were. there's these 2 kids that were threatening them and to give him a hard time. his father made complaints to the school and school did so you don't know what was at the heart of the matter. we're live. this all started, you know. >> but it wasn't whatever it was. was it worth losing his late wednesday afternoon, the santa rosa police chief said that around 11 they received multiple 9-1-1, calls to students have been stabbed after a fight broke out in an art class. >> the 2 juniors have reportedly entered the class and confronted a freshman. >> a teacher tried to stop the altercation. police say that the freshman pulled a knife stab one student 3 times. the other ones. >> medical staff arrived here on the scene and quickly started treating the students and they were transported to a local hospital. unfortunately, one of the students who is a 16 year-old male and a juvenile here are a junior here at the monte campus

passed away at that hospital. >> the suspect ran away after the stabbing. and police say that teround at a nearby church and arrested him. all classes were dismissed for the day and school will be closed for the next few days. according to officials late in t evening fa■/■bmily and friends brought flowers, balloons. a picture of jane with this family and a white board for people to share their condolences. the family says that they want answers about how this could have happened. >> first going on in montgomery, high school needs to stop ministrations to take accountability for this is not ability. >> and you're looking at a live picture throughout the evening. there has been students set of showed up here. they as i mentioned, there is a white board that was put out here by the family there's markers in there sharing their thoughts in expressing themselves as

bullets started to fly. 18 year-old mario. >> navarro was shot and killed. 7 others were injured. according to local police. 21 year-old bryan crews of san leandro was arrested in connection to the borrows death. he is beingheld without bail at the santa rita jail and is expected to enter a plea next month. >> the man accused of beheading his ex-girlfriend with a sword appeared in a san mateo county courtroom today. jose landeta charged with murdering his ex-girlfriend. 27 year-old karina castro. it happened in september in front of castro's home in san carlos. police s they've been arguing, but the custody of their one year-old child. prosecutors say he attacked castro with a samurai sword today the court decithat the case will move forward to trial. landeta has pleaded not guilty to murder during today's hearing, his defense attorneys implied they might argue self-defense. the next court appearance is march

other words, to supervise site, where users can go take drugs. if you're facing crisis, a health isis of people potentially die. who want to make sure you've created oportunities for people never lose them. >> and so you can reach them. we're not even thinking about. coming in for treatment, ice and ceo of health for a 3.60, a nonprofit which provides services and treatment for low-income californis dealing with drug use and mental illnes >> she says treatment centers are not the only option and overdose prevention sites can be beneficial. creing a space where people can pretty obtain drugs and use in a safe place where we can build real at thstaff that work there can first and foremost. >> prevent overde deaths make sure people have are g in hygenic and safe ronment creates opportunities to build connections and relationships that willead to better health outcomes while health.

bay area time and talking about the last couple of weeks. boy. >> it is this just unbelievably cold breaking records back to the 18. 100's night going to be cold. one to we' got freezin temperatures developinound the bay area. skies are nice and clear out-there right now. that's the way they're going to stay freezing. yeah, you bet. many areas shaded their purple under freeze warning tonight, all the way from healdsburg to sonoma. napa stretching across to most of the east bay, too, everywhere else around the bay area, including san francisco under a frost advisory. those temperatures overnight tonight, 20's a some low 30 so very cold out there about 27 in santa rosa. 33 in napa. 32 degrees and freezing in livermore. even inside the bay. you'll see widespread 30's, i think in many spots in the santa clara valley. 35 in san jose. 36 in mount view, you're looking at 37 degrees in half moon bay about 38 degrees in oakland and 33 in the bottle. get chilly out there. already. the winds have been blowing a little bit, but those winds coming out of the

north now and as those winds continue to calm down and the temperatures, well, they do fall off in a hurry. in fact, it's already 35 degrees now in calistoga. still some 40's and 50's elsewhere. but well, it's been really cold around the state to not just here. in fact, the western half of united states has just been inundated with all kinds of snow on stormy weather. the pastcouple of weeks lo kely to catch a little bit of a break. even southern california, things begin to wind down there. but there are more storms that are kind a lining up again. we'll let you know whatece tmake landfall coming up in a ■fe minutes. >> today, a state program that provided extra cash, an extra cash payments for pe student otsteps.that program came to anndpeople who use their benefits to purchase groceries will lose out on about ■$170 a month. and they will now get the on average. >> $23 month the extra money was part of a pandemic policy. but that policy is expiring and that

that's not the some they still might have tha >> lee says the crimes have gone worse and he noticed other restauras and fes have boarded up their shops in the neighborhood. when he saw the mayor's post, he replied to the mayor on social media saying, quote, near read what is happening to our city when other residentsgoing to be protected. my car windows have been shattered multiple times and my restaurant got broken into today. there was absolutely no protection for us in this lawless city. in a statement to kron 4, a spokesperson from the mayor's office wrote in part addressing public safety is top priority for mayor breed and a vital part of the city's economic recovery. she understands people are fed up and shares their frustrations, which is why the city's new budget increase public safety investments to build 200 vacant police officer positions. the statement went on to say mayor breed is partnering with the district attorney who is taking a more aggressive stance on public safety, including holding repeat offenders accountable, targeting and addressing the

weekend. well, let's check on our 4 zone forecast. a clear nice. you can see those of the bay bridge. our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow sending buses is clear but is cold vcold around the bay area even the high temperatures today really. >> well below the average again, but not record low. but still cold temperatures. they've been the case in looks like we're finally catching a break. >> in the stormy weather, the question is, how long is it going to last right now? just a few days looks like before we start to return to a winy weather pattern of facts, more cold air likely going to see some more snow even over our local mounins out there tonig, a uiet night, the golden gate bridge dry out there. how about that? but it is cold and yeah, of course, we s some more cold temperature records least. we tied a few here. san francisco had an overnight low of 39 degrees that tied a record back to 18, 96. oakland. 38 degrees also tying a record there believe lee cold temperatures for the bay area. even the highs today, many places running a good 10 degrees below the average high

>> a developing story, school safety now front and center in santa rosa after today's deadly stabbing. the city's police chief is pointing out that there was no school resource officer at montgomery high or any santa rosa city school before the killing kron four's. dan is in santa rosa tonight with that side of the story, there's a whole new discussion now cropping up

about resource officers. dan. >> that's right, pam. and there is a growing memorial here at montgomery high school after that, deadly stabbing earlier today. the violence renewing the conversation over police officers being at school. the school resource program over the school resource officer program for santa rosa schools came under scrutiny back in 2020 and that was after the killing of george floyd by that june. in june 2020, the school board voted to get rid of the school resource officer program. they put it on pause at that time. and just earlier we talked with the board president who says that they do not believe if a police officer was on campus today. it would have made any difference >> the deadly stabbing of a student draws police officers to montgomery high school in santa rosa. investigators say the killing happened during a fight among 3 students inside in our classroom. the police

chief was pressed on the department's response just hours after the stabbing. i think it's really important understand that the santa rosa police department did not remove arose from the school campus. so i think that's very important. that was a decision made by the santa rosa school board. chief john cregan says he's advocated for the return of school resource officers. >> but there is not been won on santa rosa city school campuses since 2020, the board voted to pause the sro program following the death of george floyd. i believe that there are other options besides law enforcement being on our campuses that contribute to safety. >> school board president stephanie been yeah. re says the call for sro's to return to schools has come to the forefront following wednesday's violence when gary was heartbroken by the killing of a 16 year-old at montgomery high, but maintains she is against police being it schools. i am not in favor of school resource officers on campus. >> and the board has has stood pretty strong on on this

decision of ours. january says the focus over the next few days is on the immediate need for students and staff to feel safe. returning to campus. the next steps will be coordinating a community forum on safety in santa rosa schools. >> well, the school superintendent also pointed out today that no santa rosa city schools have metal detectors either. and she says that there's going to be an ongoing conversation about safety as the community works to heal. reporting live in santa rosa. dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> have a tv watching tv talking with yeah, and we have to. that's the good thing. yeah. hopefully this morning looks sunny. hopefully we going it is today. >> truck drivers. they hunkering down near donner have had to wait for the all-clear before they try to

get through. while they wait, they have to do everything. they're cooking. they're cleaning their sleeping. all of it in their trucks while waiting for answers on the freezing weather. >> those guys are pretty good natured about it. all right. we're looking live here at i-80 near donner summit. maybe not snowing right now, but tons of snow left behind. and our chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is here to tell us if they're hope the more oh, my goodness, they're going to get a bunch more just a little bit more. but just keep coming as weather makes you feel small. sometimes sometimes like control everything but not the weather out there. we've got that snow that is broken up a little bit. now you see the walls of snow along the side of i-80 here. they've opened up eastbound westbound is still closed. so. >> yeah, tough going in the high country things finally clearing out a bit for them today. but all that snow left behind and i'm melting anytime too soon. in fact, overnight lows tonight dropping down the teens and then finally moving up in the 40's by tomorrow afternoon. but winter storm watches have already been

posted. beginning on saturday, continuing until monday. that's when we could see another 3, maybe 5 feet of snow across the high country. so yeah, catching a much-needed break up there. now we've got some dry conditions expected for thursday and on friday. so if you had to sneak up this the time to do it this weekend, another storm system comes in. that's going to be cold storm to look at the temperatures drop in the 20's by then even colder, probably into sunday. so here's the forecast. we'll see what happens here as we take you through time. dry weather over the next couple of days. then we get the weekend and here comes you've got another round of rain in the bay area. more snow moving across the sierra nevada and that cold snow going stretch further south as we head in towards sunday with all that cold air and it just keeps coming into monday. more snow showers, although they'll be lighter, more scattered and more showers continuing likely into tuesday, then maybe a little bit of a break. but after that, models really start to diverge. we've got one model that wants to bring the good old atmospheric river back in the california, bringing some high level snow and a ton of rain to the

state. we certainly don't want that. we're going to wait and see right now. this is how things are panning now. we're going to dry things out the next couple days. locally rain likely make return the bay area by saturday. thank you, lawrence. protesters rallied outside the san francisco hall of justice today. they are asking the da to move forward with prosecuting a san francisco police officer for killing an unarmed man. they are angry with da brooke jenkins for moving too dismiss a manslaughter charge against a former san francisco police officer. christopher samayoa was charged for the 2017 shooting of key to o'neill who was unarmed. jenkins does not believe the facts supported prosecution. she says her predecessor chesa boudin press charges for political gain nails. family members are not happy about that. message will be it does and walks away. it will matter what may be. all you have pictures from

>> nearly 2 months after sacramento native tyre, nichols was killed in memphis, tennessee. his family says they're finding new ways to honor his life reporter jamie, when shares with us what his family has planned with the city of sacramento. >> the skate park you see behind me here is at the regency community park in this place meant a lot to tyre. so now his family is hoping a new name can help keep his memory alive all while celebrating the life he lived. the skate park at regency community park. can be an escape for many skaters. at 1.0, one of those skaters was tyree. have a lot of memories here. this is where it all began as a board and ernie, but his journey came to an abrupt end back in january, following a traffic stop. >> by these 5 officers in memphis, tennessee. today, his sister's kiyana dixon and the eyes are are still mourning.

the loss of their little brother were blown up. you know, as a family, we're holding >> but nearly 2 months after his passing, his sisters are making sure his name is never forgotten. and they're starting at one of his favorite places. >> we want to name this after tyre nichols, who spent a lot of his childhood time and skating. as you see a lot of the guys behind me doing sacramento council member lisa kaplan says the skate park currently does not have an official name. we all know this is the regency park, but the state parks actually not. i'm so if you google it, look it up. you don't find a skate park. the plan now is to hopefully change it to the tyre nichols skate park for eyes. are she hopes adding her brother's name to this park will make a positive impact. >> on the future generation of skaters ferry was a free spirit and he was himself. >> unapologetically and i hope that inspires other kids to be themselves. if that means skateboarding, whatever your passion is, go after it. and

>> for your health tonight, the cdc is monitoring the spread of a bacteria called shigella that is causing stomach infections and the problem or strains become resistant to antibiotics. kron four's rob knows but talk to an infectious disease expert. >> shigella infections are not new in our most common among young children. but the cdc says last year about 5% of infections were strong enough to resist treatment. doctor peter chin. hong from ucsf says the concern is that the resistance will continue to trend upward people taking care of any videos with shigella. >> have to realize some of the treatments that we take for granted will work. the symptoms of shigella include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. doctor chin-hong says about 40% of people who get it have to be hospitalized. but that most get better on their

own. >> the cdc has seen an increase of spread among and bisexual men as well as others ms less people >> immune compromised individuals and international travelers. doctor chin-hong understands the frustrations of these groups after going through the covid pandemic, an increase of m-pox infections last summer and now she gala. he says it's important for anyone with symptoms to contact their doctor and get tested early. it should i clinicians now know that if the individual is sick enough to be treated, that we may need to work with the cdc and and bring out some alton there by the won, said to be commonly use, according to the cdc, should tell is usually spread when infected fecal matter, enters the nose or mouth. it's why the simplest way to prevent infection is to practice in the hygiene habits that will preach during the pandemic washing hands has made a comeback. and i think should go as one of these places where it can also be helpful in san francisco. rob nesbitt kron. 4 news.
