the kron. 4 morning news at 6. >> it's another cold once again ready. daria and i'm james, thank you for joining us here on the kron. 4 morning news. yeah, big stories to get to. obviously the cold temperatures, the big one that's impacting all of us. another round of freeze and frost warnings as temperatures drop into the 30's. so we'll delve deeper. >> and a memorial is growing outside a high school in the north bay. there was a knife fight in a class that turned deadly. and of course, following the latest with beloved san francisco radio host, his wife now saying her husband most likely won't be coming home following his disappearance. so we'll keep you updated. all right. the first thing we want to do is check the weather is let's go the weather center and get the details. good morning to another beautiful but cold morning out there. we're repeating a lot of things that we had yesterday. the clear, dry skies. we've got more of that. another cold morning. yeah, we've got more of that. but we are taking away some of that wind. so that's going to help him to feel a little bit better. your view outside from the east bay hills right now looking nice and clear about to be a little bit brighter were in one of the coldest times of day just before the

sun comes up. so do expect it to feel pretty brisk as you're getting out there. >> frost advisories in lighter blue closer to the bayshore the coast will freeze warnings further inland all up until 09:00am this morning. so where are temperatures? well, half moon bay, redwood city, san mateo, san jose, as well as hayward and fremont right along the bay shore coast in all down in the 30's, livermore and dublin just above freezing. same for you in concord at 34 degrees. same in santa rosa as well. at 34. well, the legal holding on to 40 degrees here, not quite as cold as you were yesterday. there i mention winds being a lot calmer. that's a nice change. but we're keeping around the sunshine and that will help us out this afternoon making for a really comfortable feel later on. i've got your full forecast for the rest of the week. still to come rain. all right, john, thanks for that. let's get you going on this thursday morning had maybe you're heading into the city right now. >> meteor lights are on. so about a 14 minute ride so that fremont street exit your san mateo bridge about 12 minutes heading across towards the peninsula. a richmond center

that 16 year-old student who was killed. he was rushed to the hospital, but he was stabbed several times in the chest with a four-inch switchblade on campus. doctors could not save his life. and i let me show you video. this all happened during school hours at around 11, 20 yesterday morning. according to police officers, 2.16, year-old kids. one of them jaden pm to he and another 16 year-old boy go into an art class. they were not students of that are classed to confront a 15 year-old boy. the 3 they get into it. teachers and aides rush in break up the fight, but it resumes a little bit later. and that's when investigators say the 15 year-old boy pulls out a switchblade 4 to 5 inches long. the blade and stabbed the 2 of them. the 2.16 year-olds actually make their way to the nurse's office. they were rushed to

the hospital, but unfortunately, the 16 year-old boy could not survive his injuries. he's family, particularly his grandmother, who we were able to track down an interview. they simply cannot believe what happened to their family member. not expect to help my daughter go through this. >> how is she going to get through this? very baby. i don't understand. >> the 15 year-old boy, james and well, he ran off campus. police officers ran onto campus. they lock it down. we're talking about 3 dozen police officers on campus to try to find a 15 year-old boy. they didn't know if there were others involved in all of this. then a witness tells a police officer that they spotted this boy near a creek.

they rush over there and they arrest him. his name not be released at this time, of course, because he is a minor. but we do know he will be charged with murder and attempted murder. this has shocked the entire community of santa rosa, which is why normally right around this time being on campus. a lot, guys, you kind of see the principal and the vice principal started drifting at this time. but instead the lights are dark and will remain dark. at least throughout the rest of this week as they wrap their minds around what happened. thank you. will. 605. >> considering what happened? school safety is front and center. a lot of people are very concerned about this. the city's police chief pointing out that that no in santa rosa has not a montgomery high. not anywhere anymore. a resource officer school resource officers kron four's dan thorn actually took a closer look at that part of the story. >> the memorial continues to pgrow here at montgomery high

school following the violence and it has intensified the debate over police officers being at santa rosa city schools. the school resource program was under scrutiny back in 2020 following the death of george floyd by june 2020, that program was paused and the school board president says they are not sure if a police officer would have made a difference in this stabbing. >> the deadly stabbing of a student draws police officers to montgomery high school in santa rosa. investigators say the killing happened during a fight among 3 students inside in our classroom. the police chief was pressed on the department's response just hours after the stabbing. i think it's really important understand that the santa rosa police department did not remove arose from the school campus. so i think that's very important. that was a decision made by the santa rosa school board. chief john cregan says he's advocated for the return of school resource officers. >> but there is not been won on santa rosa city school

campuses since 2020, the board voted to pause the sro program following the death of george floyd. i believe that there are other options besides law enforcement being on our campuses that contribute to safety. >> school board president stephanie, many areas says the call for sro's to return to schools has come to the forefront following wednesday's violence. gary was heartbroken by the killing of a 16 year-old at montgomery high, but maintains she is against police being it schools. i am not in favor of school resource officers on campus >> and the board has has stood pretty strong on on this decision of ours. january says the focus over the next few days is on the immediate need for students and staff to feel safe. returning to campus. the next steps will be coordinating a community forum on safety in santa rosa schools. >> the school superintendent also weighing in on safety at santa rosa city schools saying that there are no metal detectors on any of the

campuses. >> she says that safety is going to be an ongoing conversation as the community works to heal, reporting in santa rosa. dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> 607, right now. and developing news this morning, a beloved san francisco radio host life seems to have ended. jeffrey vandergrift also known as j v hasn't been seen since last week. >> now his wife says she's received information that suggests he may not be coming home. crawford's michael thomas joins us from the newsroom with more on the story. michael. >> hey, good morning, everyone. you know, tomorrow actually marks one week that the beloved radio host known as j b has been missing. and this update has left the community shocked and heartbroken. and that includes us here at kron 4. as many of our viewers know, he actually was part of our morning show at one point. and here's a snippet from his segment back in 2015 >> 9.46. let's go wild. 94 9 where jb is talking what? what's hot on the radio show by daria. we're talking about.

>> now the fremont native and wild 94.9 radio host jv has been missing since last friday. he was last seen leaving his home on the 200 block of king street around 10:00pm the night before he is still considered missing by san francisco police. but just hours ago, his wife, natasha yi posted to instagram with an update saying she doesn't believe he will be coming back. take a look. he says jv and i quote, excuse me, jb and i have always considered this community part of our family. so i want to let you know that personal information has recently been discovered. that leads us to believe jv will not be coming back. i tell you this with incredible pain and sadness in my heart, he goes on to say that there is no foul play suspected in his disappearance and the details will be capped with an immediate family at this time. she thinks san francisco police for its efforts and asked the community for forgiveness for her silence as she says, her heart is utterly broken. anyone with information regarding this matter is asked to call san francisco police. i did reach out to them this morning asking them if they had any

updates have not heard back. but as soon as we get more information, we'll continue to keep you updated. that's the very latest. we'll send it back to the desk. and i remember michael, when, you know, he used to be for you as funny and then we would do this segment and he would joke around about his wife in and just the sweetest way. and you can you can really see his his presence of life and excitement. and just joy in those in that small snippet that the show he was a vibrant personality. yeah. michael, thank you. all right. it is. >> also in the news this morning, we have the social media trend. unfortunately, that's targeting cars made by 2 specific companies and it's led to a spike now in thefts across the country. and now one east bay cities warning warning people about this trend. berkeley pd says they've seen 3 times a number of key is and i stolen since this trend started the challenge on social media shows people how to steal older model cars that don't have an engine immobilizer installed, which is a common theft prevention device. now,

days built into an engine control unit and it makes it hard to start a car unless the correct key is used. well, these cars have been targeted are older model, key is and eyes that use a physical key and they don't have an immobilizer. byron, brian white with the berkeley police department says that thieves are exploiting this weakness. >> essentially criminals are taking advantage vulnerability and the mechanics of the south where these vehicles notices going from. deaths in november. jumping to 33 and december of last year. and the trend continues. trend has continued since that point. well, this has become a nationwide issue apparently getting so bad that some insurance companies >> are now refusing to cover these cars in certain markets, according to the national highway, transportation administration, kia and hyundai have started offering software upgrades to owners a free of charge to try to fix

at 33 degrees right now. santa rosa at 34 allay san mateo dropping into the upper 30's currently frost advisories at the bayshore in the coast. freeze warnings inland. all of them in effect through 09:00am this morning. yet another dry and clear day today and for the sierra and southern california now also dry and the spots 80 back open crossing the sierra nevada. i-5 also opened over the great find both of those routes were closed yesterday due to heavy snowfall. now, high pressure ridge temporarily resurging just south of us. it's not doing much for us. aside from keeping storm tracks to the north, but we've got another dip in the jet stream making its way our direction this weekend. that's going to bring along with that another push of winter, the snow in the sierra and the bay area. rainfall all making a resurgence over the weekend. that means today and tomorrow, the sunshine and the relatively mild conditions we have or something you would enjoy as much as possible. we do have winter storm watches taking effect saturday morning in the sierra through monday morning, one to 5 feet of

snowfall. widespread up. they're not as much as what we saw earlier this week, but still a lot new snowfall to be expected for the bay area. it's 50's today a little bit more mild than yesterday. temperatures are a couple of degrees warmer for daytime highs and winds are going to be a little calmer. all that adds up to just a much more comfortable field. san jose at 59 for your high fremont hayward as well as oakland up to richmond. all at 57 and the north bay among or warmer spots delay what 57 degrees in santa rosa are only area actually getting up to 60 today. tomorrow's temperatures similar to today's. we will see a cool down this weekend. the showers move back on in and often on rain into next week as well. so that unsettled pattern continues. meaning the sunshine that we've got today and tomorrow take full advantage of it. all right, john, thank you for that. certainly do so. >> well, we do have an accident. 80 westbound just east of pow street in emeryville. so drive times along 85, 80 of gone up

care workers in poor hospitals in an effort to try to keep that staff. meanwhile, a congressperson introduced a proposal to boost residencies a gap of about 450,000 nurses and more than 120,000 doctors needs to be filled in the next 2 years. >> in national news, a major drug maker is slashing insulin prices to make the lifesaving drug more affordable. yeah, we've got our washington correspondent reshad hudson joining us live from dc with the and reaction from lawmakers. when does this ever happen? right? hey, good morning. insulin companies have faced pressure from lawmakers when it comes to lowering the price of that life saving medication. now president biden is calling on other companies to do the same thing. eli lilly announced wednesday its new pricing for insulin capping out of pocket costs at $35 a month. largest manufacturer united states of america.

>> i agreed to do just that. while speaking at an event for house democrats wednesday evening, president biden praised the move and called on others to do the same ever. the company making insulin is going to have to lower their prices. the 35 because they can't compete. the american diabetes association says 37 million americans have diabetes and 8 million require insulin. virginia democratic tim kaine calls it a smart play by the drug maker. wayne gretzky says don't skate where the puck is skate where the puck going. >> and eli lilly has decided they're going to skate where the puck is going. and missouri republican senator josh hawley criticized escalating costs. >> but it done this years ago, they didn't do it because they were forced to do it because they like making all of those profits off of the backs of people who are desperate for insulin have to have it literally in order to live. and the company ceo says this all came about due to conversations between the

>> all right. we're back at 6.25. new york police now looking for. rapper travis scott after he allegedly assaulted a sound engineer.

this happened early wednesday morning at a manhattan nightclub when scott and the victim got into a verbal argument. it escalated with scott punching the 52 year-old man in the face. he also damaged an audio speaker and a video screen. again, all this according to police, scott is now wanted for assault and criminal mischief charges. >> a federal judge rules starbucks committed egregious and widespread labor law violations in an effort to stop union. the campaigns. the judge ordered starbucks to reopen closed its stores and reimburse employees. 21 stores in buffalo, new york in that area were charged with 33 unfair labor practices against workers who were affiliated in a union drive back in 2021. 268 us starbucks stores have voted to unionize so far. >> tiktok users under 18 now have an automatic daily screen time limit of just 60 minutes.

back to you. thanks a lot. 6.31. for your health this morning. the cdc is warning people about the spread of bacteria is called shigella and it causes severe stomach it's not pleasant. we talk with an infectious disease expert about how the specter has become resistant to antibiotics. >> proper as but takes a look. >> shigella infections are not new in our most common among young children. but the cdc says last year about 5% of infections were strong enough to resist treatment. doctor peter chin hong from ucsf says the concern is that the resistance will continue to trend upward going from 0. >> and 2015, 2.4% in 2019 and during the pandemic and then lost all of a sudden, it's 5% of cases where. no drugs that's kind of frightening to me. the symptoms of shigella include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. doctor chin-hong says about 40% of people who get it have to be hospitalized. >> but that most get better on their own. the cdc has seen an

vaccine for older people. the first of its kind in the whole world in a close vote. an advisory panel for the fda recommends approval of a vaccine from pfizer for people 60 and older. pfizer says its single dose reduces the risk of illness from rsv by as much as 86%. so they say it's pretty effective. the next step is for the fda to approve and that could take several months. but usually they do follow the advisory committee's recommendations. >> well, to the state capitol now where lawmakers on both sides of the aisle are supporting a package of behavioral health bills. and one of those bills in extreme cases would allow people deemed mentally ill and living on the streets to be held and treated even if against their will. >> these are people who are in dire need of care right now in our communities. you continue to deteriorate to a point where you can't provide care for yourself. >> well, the package of bills also includes a proposal to create an online database of available bed space in

psychiatric another care facilities. supporters say that the database like that would ensure providers would quickly be able to find out if there's any available beds and were any immediate slots open for treatment? and while some critics have said the package could take away freedoms for those on the street. republicans, democrats at the capitol say this legislation is necessary. the man accused of beheading his ex-girlfriend with a sword has pleaded not guilty. jose, when data is charged with murdering his ex-girlfriend, 27 year-old karina castro. he was happened back in september in front of castro's home in san carlos. police say they've gotten into an argument over the custody of their one year-old child. prosecutors say he attacked castro with a samurai sword yesterday in court. they decided the case will move forward to trial. there is enough evidence and during the hearing, his defense attorney imply that they might put forth a self-defense argument. the next court appearance is on march 23rd.

>> 6.35 of the south bay disgraced theranos ceo elizabeth holmes is continuing her fight to try to keep yourself out of prison. yeah. in her latest effort, she argues that her prison sentence should be delayed because she has just given birth to a baby. and that's according to a recently filed court documents ahead of another hearing which is set for next month. kron four's justin campbell has reaction from legal experts. >> elizabeth holmes has given birth to her second baby, but lawyers didn't say when in last week's court filings in an effort to keep her out of starting 11 year prison sentence, the u.s. attorney's office patients is growing very thin with elizabeth holmes. attorney steve clarke says prosecutors want to show there is not 2 justice systems. message is going to be set here that. >> if you are convicted, you start your time. just like everybody i think they want to boost send a message to ms holmes into the community at large that the justice system is working fairly for everyone. but attorney paula

canny says homeschool was convicted on 4 felonies may have a chance of staying out of prison. i probably. >> would grant her. >> bail on appeal because it's a nonviolent felony. but can he does acknowledge if it was anyone else? they probably would have been in prison by now, which is what prosecutors are trying to achieve. nothing about this. >> is ordinary reporting in san jose. justin campell kron. 4 news. >> people are without a home this morning after a fire broke out at an apartment complex in daly city. it happened last night just before 5. the complex is on miriam street. the north fire county. authorities says that the fire started outside of the complex and then spread to the walls of the building. they say fire crews were able to keep the fire from spreading and were able to evacuate everybody safely. the cause of the fire that's still under investigation. >> 6.37 in the east bay, oakland, mayor sheng tao says

it's going to take a few more weeks for the city to fully recover from the ransomware attack on it, which was reported last month that it had brought down several city services, including the 3, 1, one phone system parking citations, business tax licenses. the mayor says her team is working around the clock to try to fix these services and in the meantime, fees are being waived for businesses that can pay their taxes. a ransomware attack happens if you don't know when somebody gets encrypted files and then they demand a ransom to make them accessible again. we asked mayor, tell what's taking so long. >> it is a pretty long time. you know, it's it's one of those things where we are. you know, it's unfortunate that the previous administration to make the investments into the it department. but under this administration, we will be making those something like this never happens every saying is in regards to resources in ensuring that we make those investments. >> it's still not clear how much money the hackers were demanding in the first place.
