9:16 am
to pop up elsewhere in the bay. the rest of the day after that gets pretty wet and the sierra starts to get wet as well with snowfall beginning to pile up starting saturday and a winter storm watch going into effect that morning lasting through monday morning. today's temperatures in the bay area will be a touch warmer than yesterd-y's mid 50's for san francisco. we've got low 50's out along the coastline. i'd say still bring your jackets. definitely as you're getting out there. but with are calmer winds under clear skies. those upper 50's on the bayshore going to feel great. san jose up to 59 today. when you stand in the sunshine, soak it in for a minute. going to feel pretty good. hayward, castro valley, oakland, up to richmond all at 57. well, the north bay among some of our warmest spots, fairfield and vacaville at 59 and santa rosa, all the way up to 60 degrees today. tomorrow, we're repeating a lot of what we loved about today and saturday and sunday. we're repeating what we saw earlier this week. ritz debatable on the love part, but we definitely needed the rain and snow and we're getting more of

9:43 am
9:44 am
>> all right. we're back at
9:45 am
9.45. in the weather center with john getting a deep on the new drought monitor map that was released today. we've been anticipating it because we were hoping would show us some big improvements given all the rain that we've been getting turns out. that's what it showed in some impressive improvements. it's nice to see the side by side. so this was 3 weeks ago. >> and this was already big improvement from earlier this a bay area in moderate drought conditions. okay. so remember that those brown conditions being that a moderate drought conditions james mentioned that was last week and then they have this. is this ok? so we've gone from that base to yellow now, which normally dry, one step away from no yes, one step away from a free of it. and then the central sierra, the central coast down to la and a lot of the north coast is officially out of drought altogether. no surprises this out of it because so much snow. that's been incredible. exactly. some record breaking stuff, actually, james. so this map right here shows basically the ranking of wet winter season since 18. 95 ok and green is
9:46 am
the way this winter season. so there's a lot of the country that's been looking at really record bridge. so when need whether this has been the wettest yeah, richard season on record this winter season and that stretches from the great lakes all the way to parts of the east bay. so for areas like contra costa counties and portions of alameda county's. yeah, this has been one of if not the wettest winter seasons on record rate here and that's what you want to seize the green in the dark blue. i want to see it. but it validates what we've been seeing around here. it has been like storm after storm after storm and that also shows you after such a deep drought that lasted many years. that's why we've seen so many improvements. it takes a winter like this. yeah, and well, we've got a lot of snowfall on with that rain to as the skies cleared yesterday, we were able to get the satellite view of what the state look like. and you can see that snow cloud cover in those areas right there. that snow on the north coast, right? okay. this is snow around mount hamilton. there's a little white dot that's about right there. and then we are seeing, of course, the
9:47 am
sierra nevada just completely just buried in blanket. yeah. well, that's pretty incredible. obviously the clear skies overhead right now contributing to the ability to get a shot like that. we're that outside. i think we've got a live picture here to share with everybody of i believe golden gate bridge looked so good. those are the clear skies. yeah, these are the clear skies that you've got to take full advantage of today. and tomorrow because guess what? we've got more of the rain and the snow this weekend. it's just around the corner from us again. so this is a little break that we're getting. it's been a cold break this morning, but the afternoon gets pretty mild. already seen a few 50's mountain view. san mateo alameda in berkeley. among those spots back in the 50's right now, we will see increasing temperatures as the afternoon progresses. now we did see roads closed the past couple of days. routes like i-80 into the sierra and i-5 over the grapevine were closed yesterday because of bad weather in each of these spots. but the rest of the state has followed us in the bay area. we're already there yesterday. and now we're looking at those clear skies
9:48 am
for the entire state. so really today is a good travel day and tomorrow will be as well. the weekend ahead of us, though, we have another storm system that's set to be dropping in and this is going to result in even more heavy snow at times up in the sierra nevada. so today, lots of sunshine tomorrow. we're going to keep that sun and those dry skies around overnight friday night is when we start to make the transition. and by the time you wake up on saturday morning, you're likely to be seeing some rainfall across parts of the bay. this is 09:30am, on saturday morning. moderate showers returning to the peninsula and some heavier rain returning to the north bay. only going to drift further south and into the bay. beyond that into the rest of the day on saturday and for the sierra nevada, right back to the feet of snowfall, one to 5 feet of it up there. a winter storm watch taking effect saturday morning lasting through monday morning. going make your travels into the sierra kind of dicey as you try to enjoy all that new snow this weekend. 50's across the board today for the bay area. going to be a pleasant one. really the big plus today as compared
9:49 am
to yesterday is the fact that winds are not going to be near as much of an issue. so those upper 50's you're saying going to be a whole lot more enjoyable without the brisk winds. oakland, you'll be at 57 today. walnut creek at 58 and one of us santa rosa up to 60 degrees. your next 7 days looking like a bit of an up and down today and tomorrow. definitely the ups with the sunshine and the warmer temps cooling into the weekend with cloud cover and rain and then off and on showers through next week. john thing here that well drive times went up for a moment. >> on the bay bridge because we had some police activity. i-80 westbound right near the mid span, but they've cleared all the lanes here right now. so it's a superstar to build our at 41 38. hopefully it's going continue to go down of the open up all those lanes there. but i'm not seeing any major issues across are other bridges like they just showed you the golden gate bridge looks great for team in arriving at the san mateo bridge in the richmond. sandra fell bridge just under 11 minutes. 101 of the south bay.
9:50 am
46 minutes of 85 to menlo park 8.80, say leanne shut down towards to 37. it's going to take about 34 minutes cracking down towards the maze. 21 minute drive for you this morning. and doubling down a fremont just under 30 minutes. darya. james, back to you. >> thank you, brandon 9.49. for your health. the cdc is warning americans to go to mexico. if you're going for spring break, for example, be careful if you buy medications there. more than a million americans each year due by prescription drugs in mexico. ucla sent researchers some mexican pharmacies posing as tourists and they but zanik saddle and oxycodone or what they thought were those drugs. well, 44% of those drugs, we're actually counterfeit oxy pills contain fentanyl and heroin. and 82% of the atoll pills that they got their contained methamphetamine. some experts say that this may be linked to the cartels.

9:52 am
say little work has actually been done to stimulate the upper spine because the process is always been too difficult. but looks like they're starting to make some progress. >> the motion thought known that able to do the things that couldn't do before they hire me open and close my hands. >> and i was doing it in a way that i have and i'm show and we all were in tears. >> that's pretty incredible. as of now, the device isn't it's still be developing tested. so it's in the lab. but with new funding from the national institutes of health, scientists there at the university of pittsburgh are hoping to advance or technology and work with more stroke survivor. see if they can't get this to market. >> we're going take a break. it's 9.52. we'll be right back. almost time for us to go.
