>> now to santa clara county nurses on the picket lines pushing for better working conditions for live with their demands. plus, how the county is responding. and in that haitian is not flattering. in this case. why san francisco city leaders are against the move to change the name of the oakland airport. and a new documentary is set to tell the story about alexis quay. that's the only woman who disappeared in 2022, we'll hear from her family about what this means for the case. >> station. he's calling news 2. >> thank you for joining us here on kron. 4 news at 2. i'm justine waldman and just into our newsroom, a shelter-in-place order has been lifted for san francisco's sunnyside neighborhood. the fire department says. >> a construction crew hit a gas line that led to a gas leak on toast avenue just a couple of blocks away from the sunnyside elementary school. this happened just before 11

o'clock this morning. people in the area were asked to close all of their windows and doors as were trying to cap this leak. again, the shelter in place has been lifted. and we have just learned that 2 people have been arrested in connection to a shooting at a safeway parking lot in american canyon. so 18 year-old christian evans has been arrested for charges, including attempted murder. a miner was also arrested for attempted murder and possession concealable firearm by a minor. police say that the shooting took place yesterday after a verbal altercation escalated into gunfire. evans, the minor and another person involved in this fight were hurt and are in the hospital. 2, 16 year-olds in san francisco then arrested in connection with the shooting death of another teenager at the powell street bart station last thursday night, police found a 17 year-old dead in the plaza outside of the station. and witnesses reported seeing 2 young men running after hearing what sounded like fireworks. people in san

francisco's mission district are speaking up about violence in work that's happening in their neighborhood. a suppose it worker attacked a woman over the weekend and it was caught on camera caught 4. sarah stinson has the story. >> i looked out my window and i 2 women beating up another one. and based on how the women were dressed was clear to me that they were prostitutes. this woman speaking up after capturing video of a violent attack happening in front of her san francisco home on shotwell street saturday. but she asked to stay anonymous. i see them grabbing a woman by the hair and throwing her to the ground. they're kicking her one point. a woman sitting on her and the woman gets offer and just kicks are very hard in the head. the woman who was beaten called 9-1-1. the concern neighbor came down to check on her. and apparently the fight began because she was in her car and the girls were looking inside of her car. and she said, what are you? why are you looking in my

car? sfpd says officers found a woman matching the description of the attacker 3 blocks away. they arrested a 24 year-old woman from fairfield for aggravated assault shot will street. is a problem with work. but i'm not used to seeing it during the day shows. that was surprising. i was horrified, but i wasn't surprised. this is something where if you've been listening to the neighborhood you've been hearing about this weekly. >> trevor chandler lives in the neighborhood. he's running for supervisor in this district in says ever since barricades were put up on capp street to prevent work. the business has come to shot. well, street chandler says he believes fully staffing. the police department is the answer for says we actually have true penalties for the johns and the pimps that are doing this because we are so understaffed and our police department. we don't have the coverage to fully staff are human trafficking and trafficking divisions. >> that was sara stinson reporting. there is a petition going around to get license plate readers in that

neighborhood. we did reach out to supervisor hillary ronen is office for comment. but so far not heard back. and happening right now, santa clara county nurses are on strike. the strikes is expected to last at least 3 days. kron four's tiffany justice is live in san jose is nurses are on the picket lines there. thanks for joining us. tiffany. >> all right. just seeing day one of a three-day strike see many of the nurses right behind us are really kind of covering this campuses. hospital campus. they've been out here since 6 o'clock this morning and they plan a remaining out here until 06:00pm this evening. >> 4,000 nurses at 3 santa clara county hospitals, as well as 13 clinics starting their three-day strike tuesday. they're demanding higher pay than what the county is offering. the nurses also say right now operating procedure dictates the county and they can tell a nurse which hospital they are needed now to help with short staffing. the nurses claim

despite being run by the county, each hospital has its own policies and procedures last mediators proposal wasn't voted down by the membership because of the money. it was voted down because the county wants to be able to send us to different hospitals. and we believe that's unsafe for nurses and unsafe for our patients. >> it's all because the county failed to integrate the 3 hospitals together. the county is offering a 10.5% pay raise over the next 3 years. and nurses want a 15% pay raise to keep up with inflation. county officials say nearly 1000 traveling nurses have been brought in to work the shifts during this three-day strike. >> and so we do have a nurses are all licensed. they've received orientation specific to our system over the last few days. but they do come from all over the country. >> pleased to report this morning that said despite the labor action, our hospitals and clinics remain open. and we are continuing to be able to provide all emergent and critical services to the community, including our level

one trauma center at valley medical center. >> the county executive says this is costing the county of santa clara more than 20 million dollars to provide this coverage. we're told the county is facing a 250 million dollar structural deficit as a county organization. they are asking the nurses to come back to the table after they rejected the mediators proposal which led to the strike. >> now, county officials also go on to say here at the valley medical center, though trauma center was closed down for several hours on friday due to what's being called a sickout in reporting live to be just as kron. 4 tiffany, thank you. >> in san jose, police have arrested 4 suspects who may be linked to nearly $400,000 in stolen items taken from storage units. police say the 4 suspects have been linked to at least 3 storage facility break-ins in december, january and february in 2. of those 3

break-ins, nearly $400,000 in property was stolen, including musical instruments. investigators served search warrants at the suspects homes and found several musical instruments and other property valued at $60,000. detectives also found other stolen property, including a semiautomatic pistol and 2000 rounds of ammunition before have now been booked into the santa clara county main jail. we'll talk about our weather right now. here's what it looks like. a nice, big picture looking out towards the marin headlands today. nice and clear and sunny out there again. kyle is here with a look at our forecast. yeah. hey there. i thought start with how warm we've got yesterday. just to take a look at some of these numbers. pretty impressive. >> 83 degrees, pittsburgh. that's how warm you were yesterday. 77 in santa rosa, but you can see also 71 in oakland and even 69 in san francisco. so we have had a really warm run yesterday and we're continuing that today's we've got those blue skies out there. san jose livermore

coming in at 74 at this hour. 72 in concord. notice that the north bay is a little bit behind because we did start off a little foggy today, a san francisco sitting at 60 degrees that are a little cooler out of half moon bay sitting at 57 also getting a little breezy in spots you can see in san francisco, but 12 miles per hour. things are going to change as we get into tomorrow. all of the things that are calm today, including the blue skies are set to start rolling into a different pattern as we see a low-pressure system that's going to knock that high pressure out of the way. and when it does, it's going to bring us some rain. but it is also going to press those temperatures down really, really low. it's going to be a very chilly feeling when you get into thursday tomorrow we'll start to feel a bit thursday. it's going to be a big difference of tonight. it will be about increasing clouds. we will have that over not night. fog with us yet again. temperatures will be mild tonight and for my inland valleys. this going to last night for the next 3 that we're going to have those mild temperatures. so get ready for it. we do have some rain on the way. i'll be back in a little bit. we'll track that for you. get you ready for the

week ahead. back to you. tom. great. thank you. happening today, the san francisco board of supervisors will hold a protest vote and oakland's new proposed airport name change. city officials don't like that. oakland wants to include san francisco and its title. >> kron four's michael thomas has the latest. >> oakland airports proposing a would-be san francisco bay, oakland international airport. but even just the thought of it is not sitting well with san franciscans. in fact, city officials are already gathering to schedule a vote on whether they want to officially oppose the possible name change was announced last week by the port of oakland which believes the name change could bring more travelers to oakland airport. adding that right now, most travelers don't realize how close open is to san francisco or that it's even in the bay area. so we asked east bay residents at oakland airport they thought it would bring more travelers and what their thoughts were i think they should keep it yeah, it's located oakland point. liked. i think it is

incomplete because people outside of open don't know the various times also the period don't know too much was keeping >> right after the announcement, san francisco supervisor aaron peskin posted to x, formerly known as twitter saying imitation is the highest form of flattery. and the idea really is a neighborly sfo. officials also commented saying they didn't like the idea of the name change, adding they've been using the name san francisco since the late 20's making it recognizable to travelers and adding the city named to oakland airport would just confuse travelers and people this morning say they agree stale one. and why do you think that? >> simpler people are going to get confuse am i going to san francisco my open sure. >> the name change has not been made official. but oakland commissioners are set to consider it later this month at a board meeting has san francisco city officials will officially ban together and oppose it. well, time will tell more information from both cities, oakland and san francisco on that name. change

will keep you updated. but as you heard from those here in the east they do want the name to stay open airport. that's the very latest reporting at oakland airport to michael thomas will send it back to live in the studio. >> some developing news now as the war in gaza has claimed the lives of 7 international humanitarian workers. the victims worked for celebrity chef jose andres world central kitchen charity. he says his crew had just delivered food and supplies yesterday when their vehicle came under fire by an israeli airstrike there. palestinian driver was also killed. the non profit, which has been a crucial source for food for the people in gaza is now pausing operations in the region. coming up here at to how the brentwood police department plans to stop teenagers from riding bikes recklessly. plus the new fast food minimum wage law is now in effect. so we'll hear from one south bay business owner who says this new law. >> may force him to lay off workers and a new documentary on the murder of alexis. gabe is set to air later on this

pressure has prompted a television network to an shell but documentary about the killing of an east bay woman. >> alexis quay was murdered more than 2 years ago and after investigation, discovery told her family that their episodes will be pushed back to the following season. kron 4 to all reports gabe's father saying public outcry led to producers changing their course. >> when game says he and his family are grateful for the overwhelming support they receive from the community as they live their daily lives.

but the pain from his late daughter, alexis, gabe's gruesome murder is always present, were still struggling. i >> it's not something that you easily good and just move on. you know that pain accentuated in recent weeks when a producer with the investigation discovery series on the case with pows on. >> first notified the games that the documentary they took part in last detailing alexis's case was set to air at the end of april. only to be told soon after that, the episode had been tabled and would instead air the following season. the games announced their disappointment to the more than 16,000 members of the justice. for alexis, gabe, facebook page. the group flooded investigation, discovery with stern comments and >> thursday, last week, this one i received a phone call for persona, a producer. saying that the decided to

case to bring charges against the mother. based on what we saw. >> there was definitely evidence showing. aiding and abetting. there was evidence for sure. and we're hoping the documentary reveals all about where is alexis is slated to air april 24th at 7 o'clock at night on investigation. discovery. >> and will be available on several streaming services. philippe djegal all kron. 4 news. >> the brentwood police department is looking for ways that they can seize bikes from teens to gather groups and right recklessly throughout the city. the police chief says officers are only able to issue citations to teens who ride their bikes to close to cars and don't get hit. the chief says he wants the city council to draft an ordinance that would let officers impound the bikes. he noted that many of the teens are not even from brentwood. he says

they're from oakley in antioch, and he says that they use social media to coordinate locations. he's encouraging residents to continue making reports when they see cyclists riding recklessly in the street. all right, live look outside right now showed us the beautiful sunny skies today trying see if anyone's got shortstop there sunglasses are on. it's just a gorgeous spring. day keilar is here now. >> with a look at our forecast. yeah, it's definitely i'm going take a walk afterwards. it's beautiful out there. you've got to enjoy it. and there's a couple reasons why you're going to want to enjoy it. we're going to get to that in a second. but let's start a half moon bay where? >> hey, we've got a lot of people out there enjoying the beautiful blue skies. it's another lovely day out there. and then to be followed by an evening. we're going to start to see some clouds move in and we're going to start to see a little bit a breeze pick up. now, that is an indication of a system that's going to coming our way. not only is it going bring us some rain. it is chilly, downright chilly. so we'll talk about that temp drop coming up in just second here. all of this is happening because high pressure right

now is in control. and that's what's giving us the sunny skies. that's why today is lovely. however, as is so often the case low-pressure rolling in behind this one. a blast of cool air that is coming as we're talking about temperatures dropping, you know, 10 to 15 degrees. so if we take an example, santa rosa, which should top out at about 70 today by thursday, looking at 56 degrees as your high. and you can see for san francisco dropping into the 50's as well. conquer going from 75 today to 57 on thursday. same story in san jose. so again, 10 to 15 degree drop. now it starts a little suddenly tomorrow. it's going to start to see the cool down. i'm taking you through this to show you that tomorrow is all but the clouds. but we do stay dry. cooler air moving in. but it isn't until this front tracks through on thursday that we get the rain a little sierra snow and chilly air behind this. we could even see some snow up and high elevation in the peaks here. how the bay area we do have a little chance of rain also on sunday. but then once we get into next week, we clear out we warm up and we're

back to our springtime temperatures. we're talking likely between about a quarter of an inch to maybe a little bit up to about 3 quarters of an inch in certain spots. but i think a quarter to a half is about what we'll see across the bay area. wind is going to pick up. this is tomorrow afternoon. you can see some of that gusty wind rolling in and again, the temperatures. so when we talk about thursday, we're not just talking about bringing your umbrella. we're talking about getting the bigger code out, maybe because our highs are only going to be in the 50's. and again, we do have a pretty good looking weekend. and boy, do we rebound. we get into next week. look at that beautiful sunshine monday and tuesday. the statewide minimum wage for most fast food workers in california has officially gone up. most fast food employees across the state are now making $20 an hour. >> vitality bowls is one of the businesses impacted by this new minimum wage law and the owner of 2 locations in san jose says that the law will make it more challenging for him to run his shops. >> well, definitely, you were

going to have to increase prices to cover the cost. real possibilities cutting hours for my employees, which is that good. and also possibly layoffs for small business. you know, weise is minds of the family business. i have my wife, 2 sons. and basically, you know, there's a potential if things don't improve with the higher prices that customers stop coming in, that we will shut down and, you know, then basically people jobs. >> want jack in the box worker talking to us in spanish tells us it's been difficult to afford basics in california. she feels that this extra money will help her pay for her rent and her sons housing at college. >> it's more tell you a little bit. it's going to really be a really for me because things continue to go gas food, low, paying expenses. and as i mentioned, helped write my son to with all of those expenses. and so this is going to be a

soaring home prices and mortgage rates are keeping many prospective buyers out of the market. a new bankrate study shows that the required salary to purchase the average home. >> is now over $110,000. that's up. 46% in just 4 years. california leads the pack when it comes to the highest salary needed to buy a home here in the golden state. lead to make almost $200,000 to buy a house, the least expensive state to buy a home. mississippi. and fewer homes are being built in california. home construction in our state dropped 7% in 2023. compared to the year before construction contractors site higher cost for borrowing materials and some of the factors here. they also say

certain regulations make it more difficult to turn a profit. they say all of this results in fewer projects because it makes financial sense for them to scale back construction. however, less housing availability means higher prices for home buyers. the city of san francisco is reporting losing over 20,000 jobs in just a three-month period. the city controller's office reports that 21,000 jobs were lost between december 2023. to this past february. they say a lot of this has to do with the end of seasonal employment during the holidays. but there have been a lot of job losses because of layoffs in the tech industry. the report also noted that unemployment went up to 3.8% and hiring trends continue to decline. coming up to the department of water resources has conducted. >> its 4th snow survey of the year. so we'll see where the snow pack stands now. plus, a lawsuit filed against tesla involving a 2 year-old behind the wheel is set to start this

seems that travelers still find convenience and price to be the most important passengers traveling on a united flight from frankfurt, germany, to sfo friday had a less than pleasant experience when one of the plane's toilets might deter me from passengers were accommodated in hotels in frankfurt and put on a different flight the next day. >> i spoke with travel industry analyst henry harteveldt about the incident that happened on the united flight between frankfurt and francisco was embarrassing. we don't know the cause of it, whether it was caused >> a passenger who may put something down the toilet that shouldn't have gone down there or whether there was a problem with the lavatory that was not discovered before the aircraft left. frankfurt. >> a united spokesperson said the incident involved a of the aircraft's lavatories. the latest in a series of mechanical and safety issues involving the airline. but it did not deter travelers like vincent wong from booking united for us. were not really commit >> airline, just whatever is

fremont plant. a federal judge gave the agency the green light to proceed with this lawsuit joins 2 other suits filed in alameda county. also related to allegations of a racially hostile work environment at the factory. the e e o c says not a black managers and employees repeatedly use the n word to address black employees. tesla has denied these allegations. the next step here is an initial case management conference and that's going to be held in may. and a trial involving tesla's also set to begin next week and a case where 2 year-old was behind the wheel. a south bay woman has filed the suit and she was 8 months pregnant at the time of this crash in 2018. she says that their tesla was parked in their driveway with her son crawled into the driver seat that 2 year-old and somehow turn the car act. she says he then crashed into their garage, pinning her to the garage wall. a neighbor was able to backed the car up and free her. she went to the hospital with severe injuries. jury is going to determine if

weather. they are looking out for a little more snow as we get into the week. we're right now. 56 degrees and some really nice sunshine. wind is relatively calm out there. so it's it's really lovely. yesterday. we looked here. we have a little bit of snow on the ground. obviously that has melted as these temperatures warmed up. we're going to see big temperature drop here in this year as well. just like we will in the bay area. you can see tomorrow the high about 54 degrees. but by thursday, we'll be lucky to make it to the freezing mark. looking up for highs of 31 degrees as we've got some additional snow showers coming in. so winter weather advisory is up. yes, we've got another system, folks. this is going into effect 11:00pm on wednesday. so late wednesday, into late friday about 11:00pm on and this is going to be another interesting system is going to be very cold system basically rolling in late wednesday into saturday. and then you can see the other kind of interesting thing about this is some of the snow levels could get really low between about 1503,000 feet expecting about a foot to foot and a half of snow up at the peaks. but it's going to be a very, very cold system. it's not going to have a whole lot

freshman year of high school and to date, we've empowered more than 13,000 girls worldwide. and we have over 230 chapters. we've been able to host the world's first new women in sports conference. and we also host a variety of sports camps like seen in the pictures are. so what inspired you to do this? yeah, so i growing up. i've always been extremely ambitious aptly. i think in the right hands for throughout my childhood. and so it was not in the one that stuck with but i think older started noticing that more and more girls were dropping out of sports because receiving sexist comments. underpinned the ideology that being female equated to being inferior in sports after receiving such comments myself, i was pushed to start girl for sports to empower girls to pursue what i was discouraged, too. >> so you've got a lot on your plate. but will this $5,000 do for your organization? how will it change things make things better for the future?

>> yes, a lot of the funding for camps such as these seen in the video right now is comes out of pocket. we know part of the girls executive team that we have the opportunity and the resources to find camps. so we would like to eat. we're currently using our own resources allow other girls to pursue sports. but through the funding that receiving through prudential, we're hoping to integrate more sports programs in wide-scale them. so i actually believe that the mission statement girl to sports should be extended to every corner of the world. and in order to be fundings that just them from prudential is crucial. so currently speaking schools ghana, africa and janai india to interest sports programs so that we allow for girls who don't have support option to pursue it. >> you're from dublin. but where do these different camps take place? yes, so it from a variety of places to the in

first vessel to use an alternate channel to bypass the wreckage of the key bridge in baltimore. video shows the barge being pushed by a tugboat late yesterday afternoon. it's headed to de-aware's dover air force base to supply jet fuel to the department of defense officials say the temporary channel will be mostly used by vessels helping with the cleanup of the key bridge. crews are now working to open up a second channel to deeper vessels to past. in the meantime, all that complicated work to remove the steel and concrete from the water is ongoing. the key bridge collapsed a week ago when a container ship lost power and crashed into a supporting column. 6 people working on that bridge at the time are now presumed dead. coming up here as oakland leaders try to keep the a's at the coliseum. >> before their move to las vegas, sacramento is hoping that the team is going to go there instead. we'll explain why. plus. >> i'm trevor shirley in washington. the department of

hazardous only have to have a single crew member in most cases, officials from the department of transportation say that can pose a safety risk. the new regulation unveiled today requires a minimum of 2 operators. officials say a second crew member increases safety by catching problems. a single operator might miss. the administration has dealt with several major rail disasters, including a massive derailment in east palestine, ohio, last year after that administration officials vowed an increased push for greater trains. safety. but the railroad industry is pushing back the association of american railroads says there's no connection between crew size and train safety. that organization says crews safety levels are based on data and collective bargaining agreements which would be up ended by this new regulation. administration officials, though, say the new rule will lead to greater safety. this is a good day for the safety of rail workers, rail passengers and every american who lives near rail line all

out there today and enjoy it all the sun because things look a little different as yes, end of the week, we're going to slide into big weather pattern. change tomorrow will begin the slide. but today it's so nice out. 72 in los angeles. 76 in bakersfield reading at 76 degrees. >> and we're looking awfully nice here in the bay to see. take a live look here from sutro tower. we've got lots of blue skies out there and the temperatures that. we are at 77 degrees in fremont. you can see 66 in oakland, 62 in downtown san francisco. 75 for you in pittsburgh as we head up to the north bay, we're start to warm up a little bit there to put a limit right now at 71 degrees. so our skies are nice and clear. but you do see some clouds kind of hanging out there. we are going to see some of that rebuild in tonight. as high pressure starts to weaken while low pressure begins, pushing on it, right. so that's going to bring that front our way. and that's why we're going to see some rain in the forecast too. so it's going to be between about a quarter of an inch and maybe 3 quarters of an inch of rain. i

think a quarter to a half is about right. but a few spots could get a little bit more than that. and it is mostly a thursday into friday event before it's all said and done. so show you future cast tomorrow. those clouds start to slide in, but we should stay dry. i do think you can see a little coastal drizzle overnight tonight, but that's about it. then the front tracks through as we get into thursday. that will bring us the rain, the sierra snow and some chilly temperatures behind this front is cold air rushes in friday. we'll see a few more showers and then things will start to wrap up. as i mentioned, we're looking out for about a quarter to half an inch for most spots. we could see a little bit higher totals, maybe for some of our coastal areas. and then that will be the end of that. however, it does take us a minute to warm back up here. so as we start to roll down by thursday, temperatures just in the 50's we stay there on friday. we will start to recover as we get to saturday, we'll get a little sunshine into some partly cloudy skies, a slight chance sunday evening for a little shower. and then we start next week. that's when we get back to those

spring-like temperatures and a little more. california sunshine. well, the oakland a's and the city of oakland and the county of alameda back of the negotiation table today discussing an extension to the a's lease at the coliseum. >> no deal has been reached but the talks to continue the current lease runs out after the season and the a's need a place to play for a few years until a new ballpark in las vegas is complete. so if it's not the coliseum, it could be sutter. health park in west sacramento, dennis shanahan has the story. in general. >> i can safely say that aaa requirements are different than major league requirements. we spoke with former miami marlins president david p sampson now host of the daily podcast. nothing personal as someone who knows what it's like to run a big league team. he says sutter health park will need major upgrades if it's going to be acceptable to major league ballplayers. still, he's see sacramento as a frontrunner for landing the a's until they move to las vegas because the team plans to leave open

anyway and he says open is asking too much for a lease extension. i would say fire the president of the a's. there is not one scenario under which i would be pay 97 million dollars in rent. the biggest issue that i see pace in sacramento is that wherever oakland plays there has to be union approval. >> if it's outside of oakland and there has to be a an agreement for some sort of tv revenue that major league baseball would have to approve because there's a calculation done for revenue sharing purposes. and the question owners will ask is how much money are we going to be giving to the a's during this quote, unquote, interim period, of course, center health park is technically in west sacramento. that city's mayor martha guerrero told fox 40 by telephone monday. she's not ready to comment until she has more information. sacramento mayor darrell steinberg sent us this statement. >> it's important for me to express my sincere hope that the a's remain in oakland. i've been consistent in my support for this from the very
