settlement was filed in a case involving a bay area man who died while behind the wheel of a tesla. thanks so much for joining us. everybody. i'm vicki liviakis and i'm noelle bellow. the family of walter playing sued tesla accusing the auto pilot feature of malfunctioning. >> causing the deadly accident in mountain view back in 2018 prison jack moment was at the courthouse today and has the latest. >> no, well, we do not know how much money tesla is settling for after the family of walter sued the car manufacturer. what we do know, though, is that the attorneys representing the family submitted documents in support of the settlement earlier this morning, the court case goes back at least 5 years now as walter hong crashed into the median on highway 101 in mountain view back in 2018. the family sued the year after investigators with the u.s. national transportation safety board say wong was playing video games on his smart phone and using tesla's autopilot feature at the time of the crash. hong died later in the hospital. that investigation also determined tesla's

autopilot system operated improperly by not recognizing the lane change on the highway. tesla has long said its futures do not prevent all accidents. while one family has said tesla misled kong into thinking the auto pilot was safe. now this case is far from over. attorneys from both sides will be back here on thursday to discuss the settlement further. now, the attorneys representing the family told me that if i want details on the settlement, just wait until thursday. i did reach out to tesla for comment but have not heard back yet. and downtown san jose jack moment kron 4 news. >> and another court case involving tesla will be heard in the south bay tomorrow. the case involves a family whose 2 year-old son crash the tesla model x into his pregnant mother back in 2018. the lawsuit accuses tesla of consumer fraud for advertising. the model x as safe. it also claims tesla knew about the defective design. tesla has denied any liability in that crash attempts to reach a settlement between the attorneys for tesla and the family have

fallen through a search underway in oakland tonight for the car involved in a hit and run that killed a person. >> happened just before 1 o'clock this morning at the intersection of 70th avenue and san leandro street. that's near the coliseum. bart station. police say when they got there, they found the victim dead. and no word tonight suspected car's description or the victim's name. but anybody with information about the crash is being asked to call oakland police. >> a man was arrested after police say he stole more than $1000 in merchandise and threatened employees with pepper spray at the san mateo ross store. it happened around one saturday afternoon at the store on kong car drive. police say on their way to ross. they found the suspect. 53 year-old james bell driving recklessly on highway 92. officers say they tried to pull him over but he led them on a pursuit. police say bell eventually crashed into a guardrail which threw him out of the car. he was taken to

the hospital and later arrested on several charges to the east bay. now a little girl was killed in a freeway crash near concord over the weekend as kron four's philippe djegal reports the. >> man behind the wheel of the car. she was in is on the run. >> the california highway patrol is searching for a 30 year-old man who was allegedly behind the wheel of an suv that flew off the freeway near concord sunday morning. we're speaking with the. >> for people that got transported to the hospital. they're all stable and expected to recover from their injuries. they're helping piece together who the driver was. a 9 year-old girl did not survive the crash. she died on scene. >> the chp says the suv was the only car involved. it crashed in the dirt median between interstate 6.80, and highway 2.40, to near concord. >> and rolled over several times before landing on its roof. the chp says most if not all of the passengers were ejected and likely not strapped in before the crash.

she always recommend wearing seat belts. one of them was we enforce the most. >> if you don't wear your seatbelt and you get involved in a collision that's going to increase the likelihood of major injury or death. the child who dies mother, 13 year-old sister and 2.17, year-old cousins were also in the car and where the passengers hospitalized since the driver left the scene before officers arrived at this time. it's unclear if intoxication played a role in the crash in concord, philippe djegal all kron. 4 >> the port of oakland is ready to battle the city of san francisco over the proposed name change of the oakland airport. the port will vote on thursday on renaming the airport. san francisco bay, oakland international airport will report says it wants to change the name to, quote, boost inbound travelers, geographic awareness of the airport's location on the san francisco bay. but san francisco city attorney david chiu has sent the port a letter threatening

legal action if they go through with that name change, she says using san francisco as part of the renaming of oakland airport will cause confusion and chaos. and he says also infringes on sf owes trademark. >> we believe that their proposal appears intentionally designed to divert travelers. it may be unfamiliar with the area. geography. it may lead them to believe that oakland has a business relationship with us po which it does not. we believe that the clear similarity and a very high likelihood of confusion gives us a strong federal trademark infringement, a claim as well as a strong federal dilution claim and taken together. these are clear infringement on sfo straight months. >> now we have received a statement from the oakland airport response to a possible lawsuit reads in part, quote, the proposed the modification will clarify, not confuse the new name identifies where the airport is actually located,

which is on the safe disco bay. now, if the proposed a modification is approved by the board, the board, will take all appropriate measures to defend its right to use this accurate geographic identifier and quote, a port of oakland officials say if the name change is approved a thursday, they are prepared to defend their right to use it. well, it was eclipsed. haha. millions of people in the usa put on a pair solar-viewing glasses. >> there they went. the bay-area course wasn't in the path of totality, but you could still see the moon

blocked part of the yeah. there's a lot of people out there today trying to get a glimpse. kron four's rob nesbitt joining us live from san francisco with what it was like to look up at the eclipse. hi, rob. >> hi, noelle and vicki, like so many other people i put on glasses like this to look up at the sun for myself and here in san francisco, you could actually see part of the moon eclipse, the lower part of the sun. but there really wasn't a noticeable change in lightness to darkness and other parts of the country, though, mother nature really put on a show, including in my home town in maine. >> and a solar eclipse came with a lot of anticipation. millions of people i. the united states excited for this rare moment of darkness. the best viewing was in the path of totality starting in texas and running 2200 miles to my hometown of hoxton main hi mom. i were like so many others, my family turned the eclipse into a family viewing party, seeing the skyline change from day to night and back today and a matter of

minutes for my 3 year-old nephew. will that cool? yes. to my 91 year-old grammy j mall with a light around 10 miles from there in houlton, maine. >> the population more than doubled overnight with tours traveling for the best view of the dark sky. >> a cloudy forecast for other parts of the country. rerouted eclipse watchers to northern maine airport was really wild. the busy we had to be a 10, 10 jets that's low in. >> people that had been planning on going to texas and and and redid their flight plans and came up here stead executive director for the greater hold the chamber of commerce. jane torres spent more than 2 years planning for the solar eclipse. a full week events for locals and visitors leading up to the moon's big move in a big boost to the local economy. all the hotels are full. all they are being these are full. >> and the restaurant, that's where packed to capacity. the solar eclipse may have only lasted a few minutes. the small towns like we're i grew up hoping the once in a lifetime celestial event will

eclipse on to a piece of paper. the sunlight filters through the holes in the colander and because some of the sun was covered by the moon made these little crescent on the paper. really cool. >> let's get you a check of the forecast. thankfully, there not really a cloud in sight today when people are trying check out that eclipse. yeah. and we thank dave spahr for that. next weekend. well, yeah, but again, yeah. i know things are going to be changing a little bit. but before we get there, we have also nice feeling of the moment or spring for you. >> as we get those temperatures climbing into the lower 80's, it looks like here's the golden gate bridge for you. little bit of a breeze at work here you see the flag flapping around a little bit there. a check with those live winds generally speaking there on shore. a bit typical inland heating. we'll see that pop a little bit tomorrow. but so not to clear the bigger pictures. we say doesn't look like there's going to be much wind driven. that's one of the reasons why we'll see inland heating going on here. we won't have the diversity of the temperatures moving around so much so there

>> welcome back. while lawmakers in nevada seem happy to fork over 380 million dollars in public money to help a's owner john fisher. a build a new stadium. a new poll finds a majority of voters in las vegas are not

happy to do that. kron four's dan kerman reports. >> last week the a's were celebrating moving to a minor league ballpark in sacramento for 3 years until the new las vegas stadium is built. the nevada legislature is already shelled out 380 million dollars in public funds to help build that stadium. but a new poll finds residents of las vegas opposed using public money. the emerson college polling survey asked 500 likely las vegas voters. do you support or oppose the use of public money going towards the construction of a baseball stadium for the las vegas a's. well, almost 32% supported public funding. nearly 52% opposed it. and more than 16% remain unsure. >> everyone but nevada, politicians and the stadium authority seem to see through this. john fisher scam that he's got going on. alexander marks is with the nevada state education associations, schools over stadiums campaign, which is trying to stop the public funding of that las vegas stadium. well,

those surveyed live in the city of las vegas seen here in yellow, not along the part of the strip with the ballpark will be built marks thinks the poll results are significant. billionaires like john fisher don't want this on the ballot. they know that if this is on the ballot, they're going to probably we just saw what happened in jackson county, missouri last week. we saw the polling they can read the tea leaves like everybody else. it's still unclear if nevada voters will get a say in the public funding question on tuesday, the nevada supreme court will rule as to whether schools over stadiums can move ahead and collect signatures for the ballot measure to put the question on the november ballot marks remains optimistic. at the end of the day, public money should not be going to billionaires for stadium. public funds should be on the public schools or other essential services. you know, we we keep saying there's been more planning of a world-class stadium. there has a world-class education system. we've got all these bills that didn't get hurt or like universal school lunches

or reducing class sizes and that our legislature gets focused on this new shiny object for john fisher because he asked them for money and they said, ok, how much? meanwhile, teachers have been saying we love a 20% salary increase and they said, well, it's expensive. we can't afford that. dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> state leaders are pressing pause to rent increases for some tenants in california, california tax credit allocation alliance. pastor rent cap on all future housing developments built with the help of low-income housing tax credit. this is where the state gives money to private developers to build affordable housing in california, which is around 20,000 units a year. one nonprofit, though, says it's not enough and is advocating for protection to low-income renters. that group is working to qualify local ballot measures and 5 bay area counties this fall that would impose further rent caps between 3 to 5%. >> the price of avoiding long airport lines is going up. the

global entry program gives users faster clearance when entering the country and lets them use expedited lanes at security checkpoints. the cost will now go up from 100 to $120 starting october. 1st, customs and border control officials say the price has not changed in 15 years. and this new fee better reflects the program costs expedited re entry is still available for free. using a passport app called mobile passport control, which allows travelers to avoid filling out paper forms. >> president biden says his administration is inching closer to finalizing a plan to provide student debt relief to millions of americans. our washington correspondent raquel martin explains. >> president biden says millions of americans will see the amount of interest reduced as early as this fall. we're told as many as 5 million americans will see their debt raised as a result. >> president biden unveiled his new student loan forgiveness plan today.

>> too many americans, especially young people are several guns is tenable. that's his latest plan comes after the supreme court struck down his 2022. push. >> to erase student debt for more than 40 million americans. that didn't stop us to you to find alternatives. past reduced to that. the new plan target up to 30 million americans. in part it would cancel up to $20,000 and runaway interest for borrowers who now owe more than they did at the start of repayment. it would also wipe out the entirety of interest for borrowers enrolled in the study plan and make less than $120,000 a year and it cancels debt for borrowers experiencing financial hardships such as high medical bills or tile care. give everybody a fair shot. just a shot. freedom to chase their dreams. the president made the announcement in the swing state of wisconsin and republicans there or swimming the move try to buy votes. pecking are hard working blue collar men and women. we decide to go to trade school.

>> to pay off the bill of people that have decided to get a 4 year degree. adam kissel with the conservative heritage foundation says he expects another legal battle at the supreme court. could see a g's representing a dozen states. >> once again sued the biden administration over this unlawful action. >> the rule filed by the department of education is not yet finalized before anyone sees relief, it will have to undergo public comment in the next coming months. for now in washington, raquel martin, back to you. >> the $0.99 only store could get a second chance to keep its doors open in some parts of california, a group of investors led by the former president of big lots and pick and save is now attempting to acquire more than 140 southern california locations of the store. it comes after $0.99 only announced last week, all 371 locations would be shutting down throughout 4

states. investor. mark jae miller says his group is hoping to move fast to make the acquisition. if successful. miller says the group plans to reopen the store's 90 days after the going out of business sales. >> get your check of your forecast now taking a live look at the golden gate bridge. still beautiful sight. that is correct. first meteorologist dave spahr here to explain. >> beautiful weather days are going to last and the. >> when we're going to see rain again. okay. well, good evening, we're looking some rain quite come the end of the week into the weekend. looks like it's unsettled as we get into the weekend. but we have a pretty much all week long trend here of some spring weather. here's the golden gate bridge for you. nice blue skies. little bit of it looks like an offshore wind from this vantage point. but most of the trend is on shore. we'll see that again for tomorrow. as is typical inland heating going on. we don't have the synoptic forces at work. that's important because we don't we don't cool down

inland a little bit. we don't have a lot of winds at work next. 3 hours staying pretty clear. temperatures drop a few degrees by 11 o'clock by 9 about 57 or so across the district. and right now, here's how we stand. here's a tumble. we're going to have 73 off the brentwood. 75 pittsburgh, but the east bay shoreline, most readings in the lower to middle 60's with upper 60's. meanwhile, as you head up north, so again, this high pressure building over the next few days, if the scenario where played out in july or august or september, we'll be talking about a heat spike, but not this go around. this won't interfere with us as far as of this week is concern. but there is a little low developing in the gulf of alaska dropping south and it's little bag of tricks will be much the same. it looks like as what we've seen from previous weeks now, the short term period, maybe some scattered clouds tomorrow morning, not a big deal around the bay. going back to mostly clear, maybe some higher clouds working here as we get into wednesday. this will be late tuesday overnight into wednesday, maybe perhaps in the afternoon a little bit. but expect more daytime heating warming up pretty nicely. here's a look at those highs for tomorrow. we've got
