blades cold barbershops as before the pandemic, they had a bustling business on columbus avenue near the financial district now they're trying to raise money just to survive. kron four's. dan thorn joins us now live from san francisco with more. dan? vicki, the owner that barber shop says that things were going really well along columbus avenue. they had a lot of customers that would come in. >> financial district just has been really slow with coming back. and it's really been hitting her business hard and she's not sure how much longer they can go on without getting some sort of help. >> barber, jorge flores cleaning up after cutting the hair of one of his few customers. the san francisco shot he works for is struggling to stay open. kind of miss how used to be before are really popular and >> we have plenty clients the situation changes right after covid flores has been cutting hair. it glades co barbershop on columbus avenue for the

mother, 13 year-old sister and 2.17, year-old cousins are still being treated at the hospital. the driver left the scene, but he's been caught and identified as 22 year-old jesus. yvonne, the wrong investigators did not say if he was the actual driver. his bail has been set at $200,000. >> where millions of muslims around the world, not only forecast, not >> a dinner for uc berkeley law, students got pretty heated tuesday night with a pro palestinian protester stood up to read a speech about ramadan in the current state of palestine. and as you just saw there, other professors hosting the dinner at their home, attempted to put it into the speech. parker's noelle bellow has more now on what happened and she joins us live from the newsroom with more noel vicki, the professors, erwin chemerinsky and catherine fisk have invited law students to

>> stolen vehicles have been recovered in oakland during an 8 week period where they made almost 200 arrests. they say they also recovered. 31 guns linked the crimes. the people arrested were linked to carjack carjackings, drug, dealing, dui and theft. the governor credits the increased presence of chp officers have been working with local law enforcement since february. >> and the one just kind of sums it up and just feeling defeated. >> and oakland family speaking out tonight as their decades-old donut shop continues to be targeted by thieves. colonial donuts has been robbed 4 times now in less than a year for for sara stinson, spoke with the family about the security measures that they are taking to avoid that. sarah, they say nothing seems to be working. what's going on? >> the key there is a heavy sense of hopelessness for not only the owners of colonial donuts, but also for the customers and people who live in that area after the shop

was robbed again last month. the owners fear nothing will stop this from continuing. >> colonial donuts on lakeshore avenue in oakland has been a staple for 40 years. a family business that the owner's daughter wanted to protect for decades to come. i left job. came back. >> and i plan and want to continue my family's legacy. but it's just it's very hard and very she's speaking out wednesday night, but wanting to keep their privacy after being robbed 4 times in less than a year. security video from march first shows 3 people entering the shop. >> just before 6 in the morning, one with a golf club in hand grabbed the register. i think i want to say they made up for like $300 in cash in the register and up is like over 1000. the shop was also robbed back in december. what is going on here in customers rallied in support of the shop and against rampant crime. the daughter says mayor sheng thao has stopped by to check in on

going by 10:00am. that's an coming up. temperatures pushing near 70 in the valleys. so cooler 50's with patchy fog out of the coast. has been almost a year now since oakland started to evict people living in encampments on wood street in west oakland. >> federal judge gave caltrans and city leaders a green light to clear the area after several fires were started in the summer of 2022, the encampment was full of broken down cars and tents, trench stretching for miles along interstate 5, interstate 80 in a long 5.80, and although section is now clear areas near it are still full of encampments. still ahead, sideshows in saving the bay area. why the chp says >> they don't break up the car shows and progress and instead wait to make arrest. why marine experts searching for the whale that got con in some fishing nets along the coast are temporarily suspending their search. from the

peninsula to the east bay, even on the bay bridge. police had their hands full with recent sideshows out of the hundreds who took part in the sideshows over the weekend. only 2 people were arrested. proffers rob nesbitt talked with one man who says he's decided to leave the bay area because of the. >> multiple bay area cities with the same side show scenes, cars racing circles at intersections from saturday night into sunday morning. menlo park, palo alto mountain view. oakland.

>> and lastly, on the bay bridge were black marks are still visible leave skid marks that are like almost like permanency. you see it in the roads in s has recorded multiple sideshows over the years for the balcony of a san francisco apartment. so much so that he made the recent decision to move to mexico and only comes back to the city when he has to for work. part of the reason my left as i just can't i can't deal with us anymore. it's just the stress of, you know, of feeling like i have no control over my environment. during the weekend sideshows, chp says 2 people were arrested at the bay bridge and 2 minors were cited. officer andrew barclay with chp golden gate division says recent legislation allows officers to investigate and take later action. it doesn't have to be. we see it right there. stop them and take the vehicle. >> if we identify that vehicle, we can, you know, come in a couple weeks later without warrant and take that vehicles. officer barclay get several questions about why responding officers don't break up sideshows in progress. he says that's not

always a safe option for law enforcement. very often. you're looking at. >> hundreds of people involved in these and sending in a single officer. i can be dangerous for that officer. says police officers responding to the sideshows he's recorded, stay too far away to document evidence. >> wishing law enforcement would put more resources into not just responding, but also stopping the chaos in progress. i don't feel protected by chp these ways. and i don't feel like there's. >> again, like i it worries me of something bigger chp control this. what can they do? even though there were multiple sideshows around the same time in the bay area this weekend, chp is still investigating to determine if they are linked in any way reporting in san francisco. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> tonight, rescue crews are suspending their search for the whale whose tail got caught up in fishing net pacifica, they say tomorrow there will be fog and large swells making pretty tough for them. >> when we are working with

enjoy the nice weather while we have. and i think tonight, couple more of those patches of fog going to develop along the coastline, pushing to places like lake merced, said as you head toward tomorrow morning will be little through thick early on some of that right down on the deck. but overall, high pressure up above. and that's going to bring lot of sunshine in the bay area. and again, some very warm temperatures by the afternoon up in the 70's, even a couple low 80's late in the day out there right now live look out the golden gate bridge looking good. no fog. so far. temperature wise numbers still very comfortable for this hour. 63 in san jose. 63 also in fremont. 59 redwood city, still 65 and mild in concord. and 64 degrees in antioch. but yeah, a couple high clouds drifting across the state and the competitive fog trying to form down below but not much so far. but the boy still staying very active on the pacific. and you can see the storms churning out there. eventually something in developer right about here that will put itself together, likely form bring a chance of rain as we head in toward the weekend. but not tomorrow. looks like a beautiful day. lots of sunshine coming our

way. a little cool on the coastline some patchy fog. otherwise warm inside the bay and the valleys. all right, lawrence, get even more developments now in the race to replace an su in congress. >> to request for a recount have been made in both santa clara and san mateo counties following an unprecedented two-way tie for second as it stands right now and then low and joe, some indian would both be joining sam liccardo on the november ballot. kron four's catherine heenan gives us a closer look at what could come next. and one of the counties. >> it seemed both evan low and joe summit. ian, we're willing to accept the recent surprising news of a two-way tie. their teams not talking about an expensive recount. former san jose mayor sam liccardo is already safely in first place. now santa clara county officials tell me they are being asked to do a manual recount, something that could begin as soon as monday. the approximate cost $32,000 a day

lasting, maybe 10 days. so. >> who's asking for a there's allegation that one of the people requesting the recount associated with some luck heart of who actually would benefit from having a 2 person race rather than 3 person race. it's much easier. it weighs money. it's much easier draw contrasts. >> the name on the recount petition is a former staffer for sam liccardo name jonathan padilla. but look, camp is not confirming that only saying the final count needs to be accurate. meantime, a very angry reaction from evan los campaign. the statement from his spokesperson, this is a page right out of trump's political playbook using dirty tricks to attack democracy and subvert the will of voters. sam liccardo, who does not live in this district, did not file a recount himself. instead, he had his former staffer do it for him. what's he afraid of? think sandra democratic at all.

>> to ask for ask for a recount and in a lot of races and there are mandatory recounts like a presidential. and then when there's no one squat about anti democratic. >> also weighing in south bay, congressman roe conn who said in a post on x, a candidate wanting to overturn the will of the voters is undemocratic. sam liccardo supporters should not push for a recount asking to overturn election results and district 16 when all other candidates have accepted them. it's a crash political ploy and it's why i'm with evan low. >> it's a tie. vote. >> yockey says if somebody is willing to pay for recount. well, clearly that's allowed by law. and he says there's a huge if in all this will somebody come up with the money they there been instances already. >> in california history where people requested a recount, stale come up with the meantime, in this flurry of excited reactions. yaki thanks

18 stores in california. the company filed for bankruptcy protection last year reporting annual losses for several years along with facing financial risk from lawsuits over opioid prescriptions. not clear how many of those store closures will be here in the bay area. tomorrow. it is opening up a food hall and its downtown san francisco location. they say the food hall will take up 2 floors. >> seat up to 450 people. the space also have entertainment, including live music and community gatherings. company says people be able to enjoy 11 different culinary cuisines from burgers to mexican food, curry and noodles. it will also have a cooking school and will serve a nordic style beer by local brewery. 4 point the grand opening is set for 11 30 tomorrow morning. nonprofit is pushing to take lunchables out of schools. the organization consumer reports says. >> it is asking the department of agriculture to remove them due to health concerns. kraft heinz the company that makes

deaths continue to plague san jose. 13 people have died in car crashes so far this year. city leaders are blaming the city's wide roads and speeding conference. jack molmud. >> talk with the mayor about what the city is doing to try and prevent more deaths. >> from a fatal crash on monterey road in january. to a man who spent months trying to recover but ultimately died in april after he was hit by a car off mckee wrote, we do everything right. >> we follow all the rules we wear bright clothing. and still, we have a lot of those calls. max siegel with the organization, families for safe streets says even when walking his daughters to school, it's just too close for comfort close call can be. >> not paying attention to the intersection. san jose keeps

track of its car crashes on a public database so far this year we have seen twice as many fatal car crashes compared to just this time last year. so many of the through ways that run through san jose rack up quite a few deaths from bad data set. but none may be more dangerous that monterey road, which between 2018, 2023 logged 6 teen road fatalities here. when we just almost saw someone get that right now that we're talking a max off the corner of monterey and tully and has been shot. >> cars driving into the bike lane. they're supposed to be separated by these posts. new work towards. designing our streets holistically. a public data also shows san jose's years long campaign to improve its roads like installing those bike lane markers and transforming final through ways in the summer. i grew up on this section of brandon road right here. a couple decades ago. you had 3 lanes and 3 lanes of cars going within 40 miles an hour in the city of san jose. recognize the problem here ended up

reducing it to 2 lanes to 2 lanes and added in protected bike lane. one death one too many when it comes to our roadways, people should feel safe. san jose mayor matt mahan says the projects are improving streets slowly but surely infrastructure projects are expensive and then the staff and actually carry them out there says he wants to hire more police officers, 4 enforcement and even the potential addition of security camera automatically issue first a warning. and then after the first 6 months a ticket, max says the city should not only focus on police staffing. >> but the design of the roads themselves. and so we need again to have a design, a design, our streets. >> that encourages people and forces people to behave better. now there's some funding set aside to improve. king wrote that's an east side, san jose and yet another statistically dangerous road in the city. >> now regarding the security cameras, the mayor says that if city council approves those cameras, they would start with around 30 of them and placed them around school zones in the newsroom. i'm jack moment. kron 4 news.

>> francisco bay area muslim community reacting tonight after a man vandalized a mosque with a skateboard broken windows could be seen at the u.s. good. all tory mosque in lower hill, a member tells kron 4 on april 4th, the man parked his car in front of the mosque, walked over and started smashing windows with a skateboard shouting hate speech and then went inside the mosque to drink water and then went back to his car. this comes as the muslim community has been celebrating ramadan. >> it's really sad is unacceptable. i went to school at this mosque as a kid. i played almost every single payer. >> during ramadan. >> over here. musk board members say over the past month there have been other acts of vandalism >> the words on this now painted over wall once read, quote, you will all burn in and the word own has been written at the entrance of the mosque. >> and oakland business is on

the the owner of a long time live music venue in downtown oakland says burglaries and crime really scaring customers off. kron four's philippe kyle talks with the owner who says so he'll likely have to close his doors for good. >> in oscar edwards is 15 years running a business in downtown oakland. he says thieves pretty much stayed away from his establishment called complex oakland. but recently he has been burglarized 3 times twice in february and they have been costly. it was like about $40,000 worth stuff. he says it has already been referred tracking artists to perform at his live music venue or dine at his full service restaurant on the second floor. thing that fee, what the city is becoming, edwards says he has taken steps to secure his facility and has cameras set up to keep an eye on the space. but that has seemingly only brought pain having video evidence of thieves stealing from him and getting away with it really hurts my heart because i don't want to have to leave the city.

mostly clear right now. are san francisco looking good so far? come patches of fog likely form as we head through the night tonight. but yeah, you know, with everything so nice outside, we're really the pollen count rise and so running high again for tomorrow. i think by friday that will start to back off a little bit. the good side of getting the cold weather and the rain that's going to really knock down the pollen count on saturday and sunday to give you a little bit of a break. but then a return to nice weather again on monday. and that pollen count will slowly start to rise out the door. tonight, a few high clouds up above competitors, fog likely to form along the coastline tomorrow should be mostly sunny, mild, warm around most of the bay area. the one place maybe a little cool is right along the water's edge. but this weekend, yeah, boy, these temperatures really going to drop rain likely on saturday, especially saturday morning. not a washout for the entire day but scattered showers and the possibility of thunderstorms throughout the day. maybe even a lingering shower early in the morning on sunday. so after door right now, we've got some cooler 50's along the coastline. still, 61 in downtown san francisco to 60 in calistoga

and 65 degrees. comfortable in concord right now. but overall, i the pattern looking good as we've got high pressure ready to take care of us for tonight. little northerly component to when you can see right there. that means we're going to warm things up as we head throughout the day for tomorrow. so right now around the bay area, you see things fairly calm inland. just a light breeze in the san francisco and that normally component keeping a clear most of fog so far. but i think overnight tonight might see just a little bit of a sea breeze return. here's long-range forecast model and you'll see as we head through tomorrow morning should be a good commute other than some patchy fog should be dry. the afternoon looks great. then we get friday. you start to see the system roll down the coastline. here we go again. we've got some rain in the forecast as we head toward friday night and saturday. see roll through right there. maybe even some snow on our local mountains. that's how cold the system's going to be. so we're going to join the nice days while we 60's 70's go tomorrow. got some patchy fog along the coastline. 15 60's there about 66 degrees in burlingame 70's beginning to pop up down the peninsula. 70's and 80's in the south bay by tomorrow afternoon about 81
