robbery. >> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 7. >> good morning. thank you so much for joining us here on the kron. morning news. i'm stephanie lin. >> it's sunday. april, the 14th. let's get your day started with a look at the weather with dave sphar had their day. well, good morning, stephanie. good morning, everybody. and for the most part, we've kind of retired the bit of rain for this weekend going on. we still have that little isolated chance in the hills. you might see a little shower going forward. but the next job is to do the clearing aspect of things. and that will be a little bit on the slow side. checking a radar. real quick here. you'll see a few little showers nestled in some of the hills like santa cruz mountains, a little bit of a way out towards the east and central valley a bit and way up north. we kind of talked about this a little bit yesterday. this is was the pattern we're looking now. just giving you an idea and the motion there's the low, it's actually in our backyard right now. but in the has a significant breaks in their. remember, it's not having any

>> video from last wednesday show several masked men armed with guns smashing glass cases and ransacking falling jewelry. the robbers were eventually scared off when the owners has been came out with their own gun. the owner's son says most of the stores inventory was stolen. >> this robbery you know that this past wednesday was probably one of the most brazen never before. we've had 8 eventually rushed that the business get away cars. we worked really hard for everything we've got, but we're going to be some type times they were able to get in when we get back on own 2 feet. we're going to get back. we're going to get back to the community. >> jewelry has been in oakland's chinatown since the 1980's. the family says they are thankful for the outpouring of community support. a gofundme has so far raised more than $30,000. is a business owners are speaking out over repeated break-ins with thieves, sometimes making out with thousands of dollars. the latest victim in downtown

san jose where a gamer bar was hit. not once but 8 times. kron four's jack moment reports. >> so walking down first street here in downtown saint is passed by the guild house. it's a really busy saturday here for the gamer bar and you wouldn't know it if you weren't there to see it. but just a couple of days ago, it was the site of a burglary with thieves taking more than $20,000 worth of cash and merchandise. >> it's a packed event in south downtown san jose k-pop event. pretty good business to the owner. kevin, we're going on our 3rd year in july, stranger to working in downtown. and unfortunately, no stranger to this. a pair of thieves making off with files, credit cards and merchandise. wic says, though, this isn't the first time in the beginning when broken into we didn't want to seen as vulnerable potentially make more people aware that we're here and that where we could be a target. >> but that clearly wasn't

victim. and before i was a victim. it was a normal woman with normal mingle and a very normal life. >> the bill sb 5, 5, 4, is sitting in the california state assembly after senate passed it earlier this year. it's san francisco, a man convicted of domestic violence and elder abuse is sentenced to 3 years of probation. otis mason is accused of attacking his 73 year-old former partner earlier this month. prosecutors say mason punched the woman more than once inside their home, then chased her outside district attorney brooke jenkins says the jury's verdict delivers justice to the survivor, adding that domestic violence will not be tolerated. mason got credit for serving 82 days in custody. in the north bay. petaluma police arrested a san francisco man for stealing a semi truck. this happened thursday night. investigators

say the man stole a semi with a 40 foot trailer attached to it during the chase on mcdowell boulevard. police say the driver lost control and smashed into a tree and a roadside. he was eventually stopped and booked into the sonoma county jail. 2 women are dead following an overnight shooting in the north bay. hope was. tiffany justice is live for us now at the napa police department with the latest details on this. tiffany. all right, stephanie, police are still investigating this case. napa police say that when they arrived on the scene, they found 2 women laying on the street. >> with wounds to both of them each they say from at least one gus suffering from at least one gunshot wound to each. now, this is video from the scene last night. police say this happened around 8.10, at night off of the 400 block of riverside drive medical personnel responding to the scene as well and quickly began life saving efforts. we do know that one of the

victims was declared dead at the scene. the second victim was transported to a local hospital where she to succumb to her injuries. the nab a county major crimes investigation team is conducting this investigation and they are encouraging anyone with information or if you may have witnessed this happened to please come forward reporting live in napa. tiffany justice kron, 4 news. tiffany, thank you. >> what should drivers hit a fire truck that the scene of an accident in fremont. it happened around 7 saturday morning on 6.80, near the and rondae exit. now crews were helping survivors in the first accident when 2 different driver struck the responding fire engine. one driver was rushed to a hospital with minor injuries. the fire engine had to be towed. chp is investigating the union representing san francisco. sheriff's deputies is requesting help from the california national guard to solve a staffing shortage at the county's jails. the

president of the union says there were 240 reports of prisoner fights last year and nearly 60% increase from 2022, the union president says the national guard temporarily help beef up staffing levels. as of friday. there were more than 1100 inmates in san francisco county jails. convicted killer scott peterson is back in redwood city court on tuesday. this is the first of 3 hearings in an effort to get his conviction overturned. peterson was convicted in 2004 of the murder of his wife, laci and their unborn child. peterson has maintained his innocence. he is serving life in prison earlier this year. the los angeles innocence project which takes on cases it believes led to wrongful convictions. took on peterson's case lawyers there asking a judge to approve new dna testing and that evidence be reexamined. week is officially underway in san francisco. the event highlights 7 license lounges

of drones and ballistic missiles at the jewish state. israel's iron dome missile defense system intercepting many of those strikes, the u.s. the uk and france also shooting down some of the drones and missiles. the israeli defense forces urging citizens to seek safety in bomb shelters in areas where sirens are sounding. he wants direct attack comes after israel bombed in iran, an iranian embassy in syria earlier this week, killing 7 senior iranian officials since then israel and its allies have been anticipating a retaliatory strike. president biden was joined by a team of national security advisers who are monitoring the situation. they say the u.s. will continue to defend israel. israel prime minister benjamin netanyahu addressing israelis shortly before the rockets were fired. but johnny israel has been preparing for the possibility of a direct attack from iran. our defense systems are deployed and we are prepared for any scenario.

says a direct attack by iran represents a dramatic escalation of hostilities in the region, even if it is short-lived. iran is really looking for. >> iran is trying to show the world that they can defend themselves. they can support in conflict who they want to have support from russia to support iran. >> and show you know their power to the middle east. >> now growing concern the u.s. and its allies could be drawn into a wider war in the middle east. what were seen as we speak is a ron, the world's worst state-sponsored terrorism directly attacking israel, our closest and most reliable ally in the middle east. and i think now is truly the time for the united states to stand with israel to help protect it and to make iran regret this attack. i'd say beijing is watching putin's watching america talks a big game about israel now is where we see what if we put our money where our mouth, as if we do that, we're serving our

breaks of sun are already making way. here's how it looks like. and we're kind of in the center of where this low is right it doesn't have a lot of moisture which to work with. that's kind of around that. it's getting it. and we're getting some of the central valley and will this afternoon and down south is where the thunder shower action most likely will be popping up out of the scope the bay. a quick look at sfo. we're looking at minor delays due to construction about an hour and a half or so. but we don't see any weather causing any problems here. her your winds will bit of an offshore wind to the proximity. this low and someone in the teens going kind of chilly today in fighting the cloud cover and the cool temps. we'll feel that way with those winds added to that. we're only in the mid 40's right now. got those upper 40's lining up the coast. a bit of there and you see well inland like 47 antioch and up to napa. 44 chilly degrees for a vallejo, little cooler inland than we were yesterday. a little warmer along the coast and today. well, mixed bag of some sun and clouds will call a temperatures in the mid to

hospital where she too died from her injuries in napa county. major crimes investigation team is conducting this investigation. they have not released any details on a suspect or a possible motive at this time. we have reached out to the police department for further information about this shooting. but in the meantime, they are encouraging people. if you have seen this happen or witnessed the shooting happened. please come forward or if you have any information, also give them a call. reporting live to just call. reporting live to just as kron. 4 news. all right, reporting this morning. police arrested an east bay resident for driving a stolen car with drugs inside the hercules police department. >> found the stolen car and home depot on thursday they arrested the driver. a san pablo resident on drug charges after finding 31 grams of meth inside of that car. police say a man died from a drug overdose at the walnut creek bart station on friday night. police say they found the man unresponsive on a train

officers administered narcan while trying other lifesaving measures. unfortunately, that person died. trains were delayed while emergency crews were on scene. week marks 118 years since the 19 0, 6, earthquake that and fire that devastated san francisco officials plan to honor that day by remembering those who lost their lives and honoring those who help rebuild the city. there will be a wreath laying ceremony and a moment of silence followed by sirens from a fire truck. the ceremony is this thursday. offense is preparing to close part of the 101 freeway to complete construction of the world's largest wildlife crossing, starting monday and a gore hills, all southbound lanes shut down from midnight to 5 in the morning. special bridge is designed to create a corridor between 2 sections of the santa monica mountains, providing safe travel for wildlife, including the endangered mountain lion population. >> we're saving an entire species from extinction

locally. our mountain lions have killed by death for them. >> caltrans is planning closures for a couple months while they were on the southbound lanes and then switch to the northbound lanes. the state legislature has approved a plan that democrats say will shrink a portion of the state's multi-billion dollar deficit. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace takes a closer look at what will be cut. clerk will open the road. when the state assembly. to the state senate are 32 knows 5 the merger process. democratic lawmakers in both chambers overwhelmingly approving a plan they say will immediately shrink part of the state budget deficit by 17.3 billion dollars. this is not. >> the final word on our state budget far from it. this is the first step assembly budget committee chair just a gabriel delivering that message, noting the plan takes a chunk out of the deficit, but he stresses it's just that a chalk. in fact, the

non-partisan legislative analyst's office estimates the state faces a total deficit of 73 billion dollars while the newsom administration estimates it's closer to 38 billion. whatever the number democrats say their plan will help ahead of the legislature's june deadline to pass a fully balanced budget because >> this legislature and this governor. highly responsible in stewarding taxpayer resources. are now reducing the shortfall months ahead of what we have to do it. it's like paying down a personal debt. you know, your student loan, a car payment. >> maybe advance payment towards your next mortgage payment. that's essentially what they're doing today. included in the plan. 5.2 billion in borrowing another 5.2 billion in funding delays. >> and 3.6 billion in actual cuts including reductions to some climate programs and the program responsible for building school facilities. it also includes an estimated 700 plus million dollar cut to

save an administrative costs across state agencies. but republicans say the plan does not cut enough and was negotiated without transparency. backroom deals done by the party in control. >> our caucus has not had the opportunity to weigh in and we have some serious budget deficits in out to the future that we need to really be adults in the room and tackle. looking ahead. assembly speaker robert reeva says he's adamant about not dipping into more than half of the state's 24 billion dollar rainy day fund to make sure it is still around to the state needed in future years, ensuring that we still have some savings >> that we is important for the members of our caucus. and so got to be very cautious certainly excited the progress some very challenging choices to make and the governor is expected to sign this in the coming days. meantime, the legislature has until mid june to determine how to shrink the remaining portion of the deficit and pass a fully balanced budget reporting at the state capitol. a tonn wallace. >> kron 4 news.

>> it's been deemed a crisis by the department of education. all the delays with the processing of this year's new federal student aid application, also known as fafsa. kristen, joyce has more on how students can cope. >> they can be really difficult sometimes for students to figure out what to do. many of the 5 million students who filled out an application are waiting in limbo to find out just how much the low for tuition for the upcoming school year. jennifer affinity of scholarship owl says don't feel pressure to make a decision until you have all your information. most colleges have a may 1st deadline for incoming students to commit. but many schools have pushed that date back in light of the fast foot delays. if your college hasn't done that yet, the college you want to attend, contact the financial aid office and explained that you are waiting for the fina%cial aid offer to be able to accept their offer of admission and see what they say. if you get in a package, that isn't what you're hoping for. you can try negotiate with the financial aid office, contact the college. that is first on your list and try the

following. explain that. you're there. colleges, your first choice college. it really like to 10, but that the financial part of it is just really challenging and ask if there's anything they can do. maybe there's some scholarships or other opportunities i have for you. if you're talking to a private or out of state university, you have a decent chance to negotiate that offer. not as likely, however, for a public in-state institution. and if your student aid index a number generated by the fafsa which or college we used to help determine your eligibility feels off this year. you'll definitely want to ask them to take another look. and most importantly, while you wait the most important thing to do besides stress, which is, of course, what all students are doing right now as they should really push that energy into work and be more productive for them, focused on applying for scholarships, focus. i'm getting a summer job. if you don't have one lined up yet. >> several tech companies are coming out with new laptops with some unique features. >> our rich demuro takes them for a spin.

there's plenty of snow for people to come up and enjoy. right now. janet title owner of donner ski ranch says the overall ski season at the resort has been seen on average. a couple of 100 people per day. economic leads to very good on the bar and the restaurant host a busy throughout the season. donner ski ranch has been open since december and they hope to stay open as of late into the year as they can. but the slowness, we have snow and we have people that are still interested in coming up to go skeen. we will stay open on weekends long as we can. those going 2 boreal mountain taking advantage of the final weekend of laps. it looks good. it was a, you know, condition in the morning was really nice. >> thus most slushy. in the afternoon we can see like it's snowing. it's actually getting nicer. me show you and her family taking it all in before closing day tomorrow. we all

the senate earlier this year. in san francisco, a man convicted of domestic violence and elder abuse is sentenced to 3 years of probation. does mason is accused of attacking his 73 year-old former partner earlier this month. prosecutors say mason punched the woman more than once inside their home, then chased her outside district attorney brooke jenkins says the jury's verdict delivers justice to the survivor at a domestic violence will not be tolerated. mason got credit for serving 82 days in custody. in the north bay. petaluma police arrested a san francisco man for stealing a semi truck. this happened thursday night. investigators say the man stole a semi with a 40 foot trailer attached to it during the chase on mcdowell boulevard. police say the driver lost control and smashed into a tree and road sign. he was eventually stopped and booked into the sonoma county jail. and 2 men are dead following an overnight shooting in the

north bay humphries, tiffany justice is live at the napa police department with the latest details on this. tiffany. >> all right, stephanie, this is a case that police are still investigating. napa. police say that when they arrived on the scene, they found 2 women laying on the street with gunshot wounds. we do want to show you some video when this happened last night. we do know that police say this happened around 8.10, last night off of the 400 block of riverside drive medical personnel responding to the scene and quickly begin life saving efforts. we do know one of the victims was dead at the scene. the second victim was transported to a local hospital where she too died from her injuries. the napa county major crimes investigation team is conducting this investigation they have told us that they have not have not released any details on a suspect or any possible motive. we have reached out to the police department for more information this morning. meanwhile, they are asking

back to kron. 4 morning checking out radar real quick. not much to see. pretty much of it is far from home. both north and south. just a couple little splashes that appear there's you can see. >> lot of that might be virga re not actually striking the ground. so you kind of overcast with some breaks. developing this, the golden gate bridge for you. there is the flag checking in for those offshore winds that we have mentioned from before that pretty much lives up to what everybody is experiencing. now, these winds are we saying that radar winds as opposed to when they're talking a local they don't usually use that term as much and local winds. we tend to see a lot of times in the summer months when we

get the daytime heating, we get onshore wind at work. that's just a local phenomenon. it's not being driven by these features will. this is clearly a low and it's causing weather all over the west coast. and we talked about this yesterday a little bit with the thunderstorm activity will be far to the south where most of the action will be because this system is fairly dry. it's moisture star. for the most part, it doesn't have a plume of moisture coming up like systems have during the quarter of our winter months, heading down south a little bit. you heard about this from before the been having some big-time winds going on on shore. they were. and this is all reminiscent of 2005, a little bit here when they were getting the system's dropping this far south late in the season because this late in the season to be seeing the system's dropping down there, driving winds and they're dealing with the same thing in the coachella valley that we deal with here. those rain shadow effect like you get in the santa clara valley. it trouble getting over these hills getting into the desert. that's why desert alright, mid to upper 40's going on. well inland. you can see right now 40's up north 50 hayward, a little bit of warming there

what they're doing today. included in the plan. 5.2 ppbillion in borrowing another 5.2 billion in funding delays. >> and 3.6 billion in actual cuts including reductions to some climate programs and the program responsible for building school facilities. it also includes an estimated 700 plus million dollar cut to save an administrative costs across state agencies. but republicans say the plan does not cut enough and was negotiated without transparency. backroom deals done by the party in control. >> our caucus has not had the opportunity to weigh in and we have some serious budget deficits in out to the future that we need to really be adults in the room and tackle. looking ahead. assembly speaker robert reeva says he's adamant about not dipping into more than half of the state's 24 billion dollar rainy day fund to make sure it is still around to the state needed in future years, ensuring that we still have some savings >> that we is important of our caucus. and so we've got to be very cautious when forward.

shooting in the north bay crawford's tiffany justice. live for us now at the napa police department with the late-breaking details. tiffany. >> hi, stephanie. we're still waiting to hear back from police this morning that we do know that this is an ongoing investigation. napa police telling us that when they arrived on the scene, they found 2 women with gunshot wounds. we do want to show you video of the scene last night. police say that this happened around 8.10, at night off with the 400 block of riverside drive medical personnel responding as quickly as they could to the scene and quickly began life saving efforts. one of the victims was dead at the scene. the second victim was transported to a local hospital where she too died from her injuries. now, the napa county, major crimes investigation team is conducting this investigation. they have not released any details on a suspect or any possible motive at this time. but we have reached out to

here's the leftovers from this low. when it's kind of moisture starved has really been the story with a lot of the systems which you've heard is kind of a good thing because we don't want these plumes of moisture like we had over the winter months when these lows would come in mid latitude. there were warm and very wet. we had flooding and all that fun business. this go around. that's not as much of a problem. now, although it is a bit on the chilly side when we're done, we've got 40's and 50's on the board lower 5c's for the east bay shoreline. by the way, 52 for half moon bay. 54 san francisco. so in future cast, you can see there's not much punch left in this low. from our perspective, some breaks in the clouds, but that will be filled back in again as we get that heating. the moisture just evaporating from the ground produce some cloud cover for there is a stray shower, perhaps in the hills. you might get. but as we get into monday, everybody is starting to clear out even out towards the mountains as well. there's some leftover cloud cover as we get into the evening hours. but looking pretty good into next week. so weve got those variable clouds. that's a positive spin on. it looks like homeless, mostly cloudy or considerable

in larkspur. also sausalito now has evening services. latest time returning to sf is 06:55pm. a full update is online right now on their website. the state legislature has approved a plan that democrats say will shrink a portion of the state's multi-billion dollar deficit. capitol correspondent eytan wallace takes a closer look at what will be caught. >> clerk will open the road. when the state assembly. to the state senate are 32 knows 5 the measure process. democratic lawmakers in both chambers overwhelmingly approving a plan they say will immediately shrink part of the state budget deficit by 17.3 billion dollars. this is not the final word on our state budget far from it. this is the first step assembly budget committee chair just a gabriel delivering that message, noting the plan takes a chunk out of the deficit, but he stresses it's just that a chalk. in fact, the non-partisan legislative analyst's office estimates the state faces a total deficit of

73 billion dollars while the newsom administration estimates it's closer to 38 billion. whatever the number democrats say their plan will help ahead of the legislature's june deadline to pass a fully balanced budget because >> this legislature and this governor. highly responsible in stewarding taxpayer resources. we are now reducing the shortfall months ahead. and when we have to do it, it's like paying down a personal debt. you know, your student loan, a car payment. >> maybe advance payment towards your next mortgage payment. that's essentially what they're doing today. included in the plan. 5.2 billion in borrowing another 5.2 billion in funding delays. >> and 3.6 billion in actual cuts including reductions to some climate programs and the program responsible for building school facilities. it also includes an estimated 700 plus million dollar cut to save an administrative costs across state agencies. but republicans say the plan does

not cut enough and was negotiated without transparency. backroom deals done by the party in control. >> our caucus has not had the opportunity to weigh in and we have some serious budget deficits in out to the future that we need to really be adults in the room and tackle. looking ahead. assembly speaker robert reeva says he's adamant about not dipping into more than half of the state's 24 billion dollar rainy day fund to make sure it is still around to the state needed in future years, ensuring that still have some savings >> that we is important of our caucus. and so got to be very cautious when forward. but, you know, certainly excited the progress we've made today, but we have some challenging choices to make and the governor is expected to sign this in the coming days. meantime, the legislature has until mid june to determine how to shrink the remaining portion of the deficit and pass a fully balanced budget reporting at the state capitol. a tonn wallace. >> kron 4 news. >> it's been deemed a crisis

by the department of education. all the delays with the processing of this year's new federal student aid application known as fafsa. kristen, joyce has more on how students can cope. >> they can be really difficult sometimes for students to figure out what to do. many of the 5 million students who filled out an application or waiting in limbo to find out just how much the low for tuition for the upcoming school year. jennifer affinity of scholarship owl says don't feel pressure to make a decision until you have all your information. most colleges have a may first deadline for incoming students to commit. but many schools have pushed that date back in light of the fast foot delays. if your college hasn't done that yet, the college you want to attend, contact the financial aid office and explained that you are waiting for the financial aid offer to be able to accept their offer of admission and see what they say. if you get in a package, that isn't what you're hoping for. you can try negotiate with the financial aid office, contact the college. that is first on your list and try the following. explain that.

just wasn't safe. you know, it's just a heartbreaking situation for all involved in touched by this awful conflict overseas tell us a bit about the situation that the animals were facing out there. >> well, it was written they could not get food. they can get medical care. so the animals were huge many of the animals were on site already ill missing. limbs, like i said, are, you know, in need of surgery and they couldn't get the care that they need to do. so what was the process when it came to rescuing them and getting them out of that tough situations? >> well, they they somehow got to tel aviv. >> and i think that was land. and then they flew from tel aviv to belgium role yeltsin to london, london to new york. and then they spent the night in new york and then they brought them by i call them fighting but i think there's something different wings of

you know, for anyone who's interested in meeting her or any of the other dogs that are available, how do they do that? just email us docked at rocket dog rescue dot ok, we're also doing a little adoption event today in half moon bay. if anybody wants to stop case, i have to tell you about that earlier. hot dog month hopped ok from one to 5, to 5 in half moon bay. okay. have a lot of one go animals. if you want to come out and meet them o k fed testing and are there any other ways that people can help? are you expecting more dogs from overseas? we are not expecting more dogs. we might be getting one more from this case. and we're waiting to hear back on that. but need volunteers. we need foster thank goodness. it was foster homes ready and able to take these guys. and when they when they came off the plane, you know, they were able to meet us and and take the dogs you know, and so that they could heal and become are, you know, just have time
