gridlock across the bay. several protests wreaking havoc on east bay freeways and the golden gate bridge for hours today. thanks for joining us here on kron for news at 5. >> i'm noelle bellow and i'm grant lotus at the golden gate bridge. all lanes were shut down after dozens of protesters locked themselves together inside parked cars blocking all southbound similar scene in the east bay where several protests took place along. i-80 in oakland. >> this was the scene near the embarcadero exit this morning, 7 protestors chained themselves to 55 gallon drums filled with concrete, took several hours to remove the protesters and reopened that stretch of roadway. 7 people were arrested there, but it was not the only place in oakland where protesters affected the interstate kron four's rob nesbitt. >> joins us live in the newsroom with details about what else played out there. rob traffic is at a standstill for most of the day on i-80 in oakland and i was at the

freeways entrance on 7th street around 300 protesters gathered to call for a cease-fire in gaza. >> the protestors goal in oakland monday was to stop the daily commute and it clearly worked as driver said in standstill traffic for several hours along. i-80, according to chp around 300 protesters blocked the southbound lanes and kron 4 spoke with several of them who chose not to share their names, disgusted by what's happening in gaza. >> and i believe that all people of conscience, the 2. stand up against against the genocide that's happening. >> protesters with bikes blocked the southbound freeway entrance on 7th street in oakland. some drivers honked in support. while others like this man stopped and expressed his frustrations with the people blocking his car, those standing in front of him saying the disruption of daily lives is what is needed to get the president's to biden to stop arming israel and to help bring an end. cease-fire by 01:00pm. chp officers in riot

gear back. the large crowd of protesters off the freeway, allowing traffic to flow. the protesters chanted for a cease-fire as they carried their flags off the freeway and down 7th street in oakland, according to chp, 5 people were arrested. protesters say they clearly got their point across or seeing their rhetoric. >> changing around this in congress. we're seeing. changes in in the international legal system. >> traffic along 80 was disrupted for about 5 hours and the protesters marched from there down 7th street toward the west oakland bart station. that station was closed briefly for reports of police activity. reporting in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. thank you, rob. meanwhile, more than 2 dozen people were arrested after the golden gate bridge was shut down for hours this morning as protesters chained themselves together. >> kron four's dan kerman spoke with the chp and has the latest. you from the north bay

into san francisco came to a grinding halt just before 8 monday morning as pro-palestinian protesters brought their cars to a stop shutting down the southbound lanes of the golden gate bridge. officers has to contend with numerous skipping numerous vehicles. chained. >> with chains, concealed with pipes, connecting the drivers and passengers outside of the vehicles. >> the chp then shut down the northbound lanes of the bridge and for more than 4 hours, traffic did not move in either direction. >> i'm going to take walk hike. take an uber to the ferry and then take the ferry up socially, do so. another hour pro palestinian demonstrators were protesting the israeli gaza war. >> and demonstrators used tax day to protest u.s. funding of israel. don't want my tax dollars that on dollars going to israel to support they

wanted us the chp ended up arresting 26 of the golden gate bridge. protesters will face a variety of charges, including false imprisonment for not allowing people free movement as well as conspiracy. it was an orchestrated event that they put forth. >> they blocked a 3 separate locations on freeways. they prevented, you know, law enforcement, paramedics, ambulances to get to their points of destination and prevented that from happening. and that's that can happen by 12, 15 lanes in both directions. reopened. >> the chp ended up impounding for vehicles at the golden gate bridge. dan kerman kron. 4 news. >> taking a look at traffic now things looking calm as the evening commute is starting to set in a much different story for all of those commuters this morning that protest on the golden gate bridge had widespread impacts on those trying to get into and out of san francisco kron four's

terisa stasio caught up with those who are struggling to figure out some alternative routes. >> just not the way to do. it's not. it's not their care at the larkspur ferry monday, a scramble to secure another way to san francisco. did that protests shutting down the golden gate bridge? very disturbing day understand protesting is a right not the way to do every disrupted so many people's lives had a doctor's appointment city. >> disrupted my wife has a doctor's appointment of the city. >> can't be changed. so this is our only option. i one many people shared frustration with the hours-long closure. others had a different perspective. it's the first day going back to school for me as a teacher after spring wasn't expecting this. we adapt and i'm antiwar. so i'm not in favor of shutting down the bridge, but i am in favor of stopping the and it wasn't just challenge is to get into the city. but those trying to get

out at this morning, i was on my way to sausalito to work and fortunately had the radio on to kick right before i hit the bridge, found out about turned around, went whoa. >> followed at the news for a little while and then decided. have a beautiful ride over on the ferry so that i'm here in larkspur. >> just might take it more yeah, i know that's not an option for everybody. and i'm really grateful that it worked out for at the larkspur ferry theresa kron. 4 news. >> yeah, fairy is not a bad idea on a day like today. now the bay bridge was spared this time around. it was 5 months ago, though, when dozens of protesters stopped their cars and blocked traffic for hours during president biden's visit for the apec conference, those folks toss their keys in the bay while calling for a permanent cease-fire in the war between israel and hamas. a san francisco judge ordered 78 of the 80 demonstrators there to 5 hours of community service. they also agreed to pay more than $4,000 in

restitution to avoid criminal charges. and then last month, protesters took over san francisco international airport calling for a cease-fire in gaza. >> they lined up blocking gates with a giant banner that read stop the world for gaza. there are speakers using megaphones leading chants, others play the drums. this went on for hours as is a public space and no arrests were made. >> and earlier this month, pro-palestinian protesters blocked the entrance of a lockheed martin research facility in sunnyvale about 250 people there participating. it lasted for about 5 hours. at one point the situation did get scary when driver sped towards the protesters. got out of the car and threatened them with a knife. no one was arrested during that protest. it's good to know what's going on, especially days like this and stay with kron 4 for continuing coverage online and on air. >> you can download the free kron 4 app to get push alerts sent right to your phone or tablet when news breaks.

despite all of that, it was a pretty gorgeous day outside taking a live look there at mount tam. we've got green hills and blue skies. if you had to be stuck on the bridge, lawrence, today the day to do it. had a lot of sunshine out there. not much in the way of fog. gorgeous weather after some storms over the weekend. but that may have been the last storm of the season. one step to wait and see. but now we're back. >> it is a bright white sunshine. well, it looks like some nice days ahead as we're going to see some warmer weather specially toward the middle of week. beautiful. look outside little haze down below high pressure. going to be taking over the next couple of days is that ridge builds in. yeah. going to be looking good. check out the numbers right now. a little breeze and the san francisco, but a comfortable 62 degrees. also in oakland, san jose. checking in at 68. 66 in lemore right now. 68 in concord and 66 degrees. it's santa rosa. overall, the pattern beginning to change. now, the storm clouds heading on out of town in the country's midsection. we're drying things out around the bay area right now. cleared out most your skies.

couple pop-up clouds over the mountain tops. but other than that, not bad. we may see a opcouple patches of fog overnight tonight, but nrt much otherwise. if you're stepping out the door. yeah. lots of sunshine this evening as you head on out and couldn't probably to stay that way. starry skies. we head toward 8 o'clock tonight after the sun sets. do expect a couple patches of fog by tomorrow morning. thank you, lawrence. >> the federal bureau of prisons is planning to close the women's prison in dublin. this comes after the fbi searched the prison last month in the last 3 years. at least 8 employees at fci, dublin have been charged with sexually abusing inmates. 5 of them have already pleaded guilty bureau of prisons. officials say the agency had taken tremendous measures to address employee misconduct. and despite the steps and efforts, fci, dublin is not meeting standards. they say the best course of action is to close the facility. >> to san francisco county jails are now on lockdown after lots of inmates have been attacking staff members,

the union that represents the deputies. there's demanding the immediate deployment of the california national guard to help the lockdowns are happening at county jails 2, 3 where the sheriff's office says 7 staff members have been injured by inmates since the end of march. >> coming up next here on kron for news at 5, we continue our coverage of the protests as the evening commute sets it. stick with us.

you know, seemingly got under way. very quickly. yeah, but it took hours to clear kron four's catherine heenan. >> in the newsroom now with a timeline of how this all went down, catherine? yeah, this is a timeline that some of this morning's commuters will not soon forget and time they won't be getting back. the trouble began early this morning starting off on interstate 8.80. around 06:30am, protesters have blocked. >> all 4 northbound lanes of aid, 80 south of 5th street and barca darryl and this put you right in the heart of the morning commute there in oakland. protesters have completely stopped traffic and there is a police response. some of the protesters h d chained themselves to large barrels filled with concrete, which had been dropped off by a truck, making it clear immediately there would be no fast way to move them. the bad news spread quickly, look at all the police that are responding. they need vehicles. we'll the lift and movies, oil drums. there are thousands of cars that go for

miles that are stuck, not moving at all. then news of a second protest. we have just found out holding a bridge southbound. >> we understand that no one's going by this target, the golden gate bridge, protesters blocked all lanes the southbound direction, backing up traffic for miles and dimmer and they civil demonstration is affecting golden gate bridge. southbound expect delays, use alternate routes. everybody needs to on the alert for demonstrations like this. they're trying to get attention to their cause. >> this is a really efficient way to do meantime, the protest was not only affecting the northbound lanes of 8.80, southbound lanes also closed as hundreds of protesters with banners got onto the >> they're currently trying to change some of these people, cutting those chains. a big part of the reason this mess took hours to on. do we got a

look around 10:00am you can see they put those protective earmuffs on the demonstrators as well to protect their years as they're sawing through these metal oil drums. yeah, i'd say it definitely makes me pretty angry. cars now going through back at the golden gate bridge, things finally began opening up a little after noon traffic in both directions up fully reopen. and within the hour, traffic was moving again on 8.80. the protesters have now gone up 7 street there off the freeway. well, one protest or the other covered a span of roughly 7 hours today. and that's >> not counting my at a time. it took for long lines of drivers to get back to speed and reach their destinations noel. all right, catherine, thank you. >> the international community is on edge today as israel's war cabinet continues to weigh its response to iran's weekend attack at the jewish state.

israel's air defense system along with forces from neighboring nations and allies help propel the unprecedented attack from iran. a 7 year-old girl being the only serious injury. the u.s. along with several key allies such as britain and france are making it clear now they hope to prevent the conflict from escalating. >> the u.s. standpoint you know, we continue to make very clear that we don't seek a wider regional war and we'll continue to work towards that result. >> in the 36 hours since. we have been coordinating a diplomatic response. seek to prevent escalation. >> however, according to israeli media, the idf said chief of staff on a visit to an airbase today said the attack by iran will be met with a response. >> escalating tension in the middle east is affecting air travel between europe and asia. several airlines are rerouting to avoid trouble spots between the 2 regions. travelers are being warned of

long delays and possible cancellations for impacted flights. airlines say flight options between asia and europe should be further narrowed in the coming days and costs will be higher as a result. back here at home, we're taking a live look outside been talking so much about the golden gate bridge. but after some rain this weekend, it has warmed up a bit and the sun is shining. now. we're like in this weather, lawrence. yeah. how about that? that's an is back. the temperatures begin to warm up around the bay area after. >> very chilly weekend. but now you've seen it. things are grown out there like crazy and they will continue to do so on the warm sunshine and looks like that's going to stick around. not for the next day or so, but i think the better part of this week and even next weekend, we may be saying it's a dry weekend many will say that a lot this year so far. but out there right now, that breeze has picked up a little bit. yeah, if you've been season a little bit, there's probably some good reason seeing the allergy kept running pretty high. in fact, it will continue to move up the board here just a bit. the

pollen count going up in the high category on wednesday, thursday and friday of this week. come back down a little bit on saturday. but everything is growing and that beautiful sunshine right now will continue to do so for the weeks ahead. that sea breeze right now just to kind of a general sea breeze out the door right now, 15, 16, even 17 miles per hour in the san francisco. that will continue blower to see a little more lee component overnight tonight. so even though we're going to get some patchy fog, it's not going to be a widespread fog that right now looking good all across the state. scan your skies out there. doppler radar all the way up from northern california, southern california. we are dry right now and that's the way it's going to stay. it looks like for the better part of this week overnight tonight. yeah, we've got the little bit of a northwesterly flow right now, but becoming little more normally as high pressure going to begin to build in as that happens, maybe a patchy fog right along the immediate coastline. then i think as we head toward tomorrow afternoon, couple high clouds begin to drift in overhead, but really should be another beautiful day around the bay area with mostly sunny skies and some pretty couple temperatures go along with

that about 77 degrees. a nice warm day in san jose about 73 degrees in oakland and about 65 degrees in san francisco. couple patches of fog along the coastline of that little sunshine, a little breeze in the afternoon. but some really nice weather ahead the next few days. looking good, too. how about this? sneaking up on the low 80's as we head toward midweek? that will probably the warmest day the weekend cooling down just a little bit on thursday. right now doesn't look like there's any rain in the forecast. something i haven't been able to say for quite some time. not that we're done with but right now, i don't see anything right now at least for the next 5 to 7 days. this weekend's rain was really that bad. it was just so cold. it was not really. i mean, those temperatures are hovering in the 50's for april. that was that was chilly. nice to see this now. sure. u.s. banks okay. >> this week marks 118 years since the 19 0, 6, earthquake and fire devastated. san francisco has they do every year? city officials are going to honor the day with wreath laying ceremony and a moment of silence followed by sirens

>> welcome back. taking a live look now at a calm golden gate bridge. as we've been covering all evening, a huge traffic mess put a halt to this morning's commute into the city and out of the city with protesters shutting down the golden gate bridge completely. here's a look at that. about 3 hours in authorities started making arrests. the demonstrators there were protesting the war in gaza. dozens of activists stopped their cars and blocked all southbound lanes demanding the u.s. stop arming and funding israel. more than 20 people were arrested at golden gate bridge earlier today. >> and in the east bay, there were several protests along 80 in oakland. this is video from this morning showing the scene near the
