murderer scott peterson is set to appear in court this morning as he continues pushing for a new trial. and after weeks of counting signatures by hand, the recall effort. for alameda county district attorney pamela price is moving forward. >> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news >> good morning and thanks for waking up with us new day and nothing in your way. and that's the good news. i'm donna and i'm james and other. but sunshine this afternoon or for the week ahead. we've got john with the forecast a job yet. we're keeping the sunshine around this time. none of that weekend. back in the 50's in the rain today we are setting ourselves up for some 70's. >> they're going to stick around. you're look outside at the golden gate bridge. nothing but the sun out there. now we had some fog earlier. it's already burned off at the golden gate bridge. watch for a few spots along 101 as well as out towards the tri valley in the delta. most of us will be looking up at that sunshine

consistently through the day and temperatures are going to rise under it pretty quickly. oakland at 54 right now, dublin and fremont. each of 48 degrees later on today. we'll see daytime highs, as i mentioned, rising well into the 70's. >> well, let's get day. not as busy as you guys were yesterday. still seeing traffic starting to build, though, here in the 8 o'clock hour, 20 minute ride traveling into the city this morning at the san mateo bridge around. 26, we had a few hazards there. thankfully they got those off the bridge christmas somerville bridge around 14 minutes. golden gate bridge just short of 40 i'm not seeing anything studying the bridge down with yet more people traveling along 1, 1, in the north bay. now let's check on 80 in oakland selanne to down to milpitas just short. a 52 minutes started days back to you. thank you. reyna to 801 and will be a hearing today for convicted killer scott peterson who is trying again. >> to get a new trial. yeah, this will be in redwood city. the first of 3 hearings that have been set now by his new

defense team. they're trying to get a new trial and >> crawford's michael thomas following it all from the hall of justice in redwood city. michael. >> hey, good morning. everyone will really the overall purpose of these hearings is to try and find discrepancies in the case to allow scott peterson a new trial that would overturn his double murder conviction of killing his pregnant wife, laci and their unborn son. conner, back in 2002 before dumping their bodies into the san francisco bay. we've got video up on your screen so i can break it all down. now. his legal team is trying to get this new trial by asking for dna evidence to be tested. peterson was convicted of those 2 murders back in 2004 but has maintained his innocence while serving a life in prison sentence at a facility just east of sacramento. earlier this year, the los angeles innocence project which takes on cases that they believe were wrongfully convicted, took on peterson's case and are now asking a judge to approve new dna testing to reexamined evidence from 2 tech decades ago. the evidence includes

things related to a burned out van that was found near the peterson home in modesto around the time that his wife, laci disappeared and his legal team is also asking that new dna be tested, specifically blood that was found inside of that van on a mattress. they're asking to see reports collected from the search at the bay area. marina, which leases remains were found and to see interviews that were conducted during that time asking that police reports on a burglary across the street from the peterson home also be looked into the original attorneys who prosecuted peterson are set to be here in court today. and peterson will be joining via zoom from the mule creek state prison, which he's currently at over in the east area of sacramento, as if these request will be granted or if a new trial will be possible. only time will tell. but back out here live, this is set to start at 9 o'clock this morning. there's tons of media both nationally and locally. so lots of eyes on this this morning. we'll continue to bring you the latest coverage from inside that courtroom as the morning progresses live this morning in redwood city, michael send it back to to live in the

studio. thank you, michael. >> time now is 803. and the big story this morning is the follow-up. after all those protests we saw yesterday and more than 50 pro-palestinian protesters who were rallying in fremont who ended up in a confrontation with the pup police. yeah, this was at the tesla factory there. police responded. >> that's when things turned a little sideways. a gate was ripped down. pepper were fired. our own jack moment was actually there following it all in. got caught up in >> and those pepper bullets not only hit the protesters, but they also a journalist as well, including us here kron 4 news, not before that confrontation with police officers. the protest was relatively peaceful and what demonstrators call a nationwide economic god, it's the chance heard around the bay area monday, protesters looking to make a statement blocking traffic. >> and some of the region's biggest names will not be

complicit in genocide. and we not allow economy to proceed like normal. khalil gibran organized for the protest says they want to target tesla as the benefits from u.s. tax dollars which also go to fund the country's allies like israel, even if no one in charge. here is the message. broad says they are but we will come out in the numbers to make sure that we what matters to them is their capitalism is one of the pressing people here in the states and globally. the protest started at the warm springs bart station in fremont at this protesters didn't give us their name. >> says they were prepared to be there all evening. >> but quickly, the group took to their cars, arrived at the entrance of the tesla factory. employees tried to block off the crowd with fences, but the increasing number of protesters took it down. they marched all the way to the main entrance of tesla's factory where they met with police. it was peaceful at first, but fired at protesters and some the more we protest,

the more we show up we're going to get. and i just hope that people are ready to come together and stand up the protests died down after that. but for people like that, they're corey, who is palestinian american and it's been affecting us our whole my whole life. he says he's standing up for his family who lives in the war zone. are you worried for >> absolutely. yeah. sometimes they don't respond because they're just like i said, they're tired of responding everybody, but it scares you because you don't know if something happened to them or they're just like tired responded, you know, now these are the pepper that fremont police used against protesters. and of course, that ended up hitting journalist as well. >> for you watching at home, these the definitely not feel good. now we reached out to from a police to find out how many people were arrested from today's protest as well as tesla for comment. but we did not hear back reporting in fremont jacmel kron. 4 news. >> 806, is the time and the effort to recall alameda county district attorney pamela price is moving forward. the registrar voters

confirms there are enough signatures for a recall election. the group behind the effort believes recalling price would bring positive change to alameda county. the next step is for the alameda county board of supervisors to review the petition. they plan to do that on april. 30th. >> happening today, the san francisco sheriff's office is going to have a discussion about the lockdowns that have been happening at 2 of the jail's the lockdowns have happened at an after a number of inmate attacks on deputies and staff they've to county jails number 2, 3, where the sheriff's office says inmates have her 7 staff members since march 29th and the union representing the deputies is demanding the california national guard be called in to help. that press conference happens at 2 o'clock this afternoon. >> and federal officials plan to close the women's prison in dublin. this after the fbi searched the prison last month. >> and in the last 3 years, at least 8 employees of the double in prison have been charged with sexually abusing inmates and 5 of them have

already pleaded guilty. we don't know on the date that the prison is set to close. >> well, we're learning the ages now of the 2 teenage girl shot and killed in napa over the weekend. now police say one was 17 years old. the other was 19 officers arrived at the scene saturday to find the 2 girls suffering from gunshot wounds. one of the girls died at the scene. the other died at the hospital says all saturday night. neighbors we spoke with say they were shocked to learn about what happened. >> you know, it's it's out of the norm. not just for the neighborhood, but for the the community of napa large. we just don't, you know, have homicides, you know, much less of a double so it's it's rattled us all. >> and neighbors also tell us this doesn't happen in this neighborhood as you just heard him say, is generally a peaceful place. so far no arrests have been made. police say more information about the shooting that will be released soon. so we'll keep you

updated. one person is injured after their car struck by caltrain near the san martine station. take a look. firefighters say this car was on the tracks around 6.30, yesterday evening as a southbound train struck it. there are 25 passengers on board the time. none of them hurt. but again, the driver was taken to the hospital to be treated. police now looking into why the car was on the tracks. >> mayor london breed is in china this week. she wants to strengthen our economic ties with china. she met with a representative shenzhen airlines yesterday. they talked about adding direct flights to san francisco. she says in 2023 visitors from china spent more than 630 million dollars in san francisco. and she says the boosting tourism list the entire economy creates jobs and supports local businesses. newsom today is going to be in the bay area will be here this afteraoon announcing a new climate partnership with norway. that event happens at noon. 2 dogs are reunited

happened. was it that monday but hey, today, 70's are back tomorrow. 80's are back. so we're slipping, but and only able come back, we could built a haha. i do the night. i saved everything yes, definitely. it's all circulate back after last so, yeah, lots of sunshine out there this morning. looking outside at the east bay hills right here. no cloud cover whatsoever. you can see the radar is showing those nice clear skies from the sierra to the bay to southern california as well. high pressure ridge in place from lead-out will contribute to this pretty steady forecast. unlike last week, we're keeping the high pressure ridge around this time. so the weekend sees just as warm and comfortable as where we're at. skies today will clear out more and more. a couple of foggy spots this morning for sure. but we're all going to tap into at least 60's to low 70's tomorrow. some low 80's for inland spots. and we're going to stay very, very mild into the weekend, too. temps right now

are cool. but look at the 60's later today in sf as well as at the coastline. not too bad for the coast today and you'll get your sunshine 70's for most of the rest of us. burlingame at 71 san carlos. 73, santa clara cupertino, saratoga spots at 76. well, the east faith keeping that range of mid 70's going with san leandro in moraga at 73 today. we've got napa right at 75 degrees. and sandra fell and avato at 73 tomorrow and thursday. there's those low 80's. i mentioned by friday and saturday. it's mid 70's of the warmest. hey, that's ok, mid 70's is that sweet spot. and this time around the mid hold the weekend instead of the rain that we saw last weekend. right i don't think even that was not seen a major blockages like we had yesterday. >> but in the 8 o'clock hour, traffic is busy. you're seeing red from the north bay east bay all the way down to the south bay. so back to that. and if you're going to leave in the house right now, checking on the bay bridge into the city 20 minute ride.

no accidents. we have one of the last hour. that's clear. and we also had a hazard in the last hour on the san mateo bridge. they got that off the bridge. thankfully, 24 min right. outdoorsman is about 43 minutes. start to build. just as you hit her caylee's all the way into the city. so and are down to 2.37. about 15 minutes. checking out things in the south. they want to one 85 in the low part just short of an hour. are you back to you? thanks. a lot of rain. a 15 and today sonoma county, home care providers are going to be rallying in the board of supervisors meeting because they want. >> higher pay. they want a livable wage. the union says the workers at a home care providers in nursing homes in the county are making less than what it costs to live in sonoma county. and they say the low wages have contributed to a caregiver shortage. that rally is set for 10 o'clock this morning. >> a new study says that some pregnancy complications can lead to an increased risk of death. even decades after giving birth. and that includes conditions like just a diabetes. researchers found

the risk of early death remained elevated for more than 40 years. the study says that's because pregnancy complications can lead to inflammation or other abnormalities in small blood vessels, which can lead, which can be hard to detect at the time the conditions can lead, though, to other health problems that may take years or even decades to develop and appear. well, concerns are growing now over nationwide shortages of obgyn doctors, which data shows is only expected to get worse. a recent report from the department of health and human services shows a projected shortage of five-thousand obgyn ends in a little more than 5 years. and while demand ix expected to rise slightly in that period. so it's going to be a problem. the growing shortage has been worsening for the last decade. what's happening as physicians are retiring faster than they could be replaced by new doctors. and according to the american medical association, close to half of doctors nationwide are 55 and older.

and then the next 5 years, 35% of the physician workforce is expected to be of retirement age and fewer med students are applying to be obgyn in states where there are strict abortion restrictions. >> a top psychological group says that social media with its infinite scrolling features, making it easy free, a cotton the what they call that the doomscrolling. it's risky for young people's mental health to do that. this was a report in the american psychological association. they found endless scrolling can cause a distraction. 2 young people's developing brains. and so they're urging tech companies to change their policies and take more action to protect adolescents, mental health. they argce that the age restrictions on those apps right fully address these dangers because we all know that kids can work around that. the report did not offer any specific changes on social media apps, but they say the parents should also and can also play a role and living social media use for your

child and just being aware of what's going on. >> google is reducing the california news websites that they show. so when you search for news, might not see your favorite crown for. i don't know where any kind of news that you might be looking for because google is pushing back against a pending state bill that google says will require tech companies to pay publishers for their content. so google says that that would change the company's business model they want. they don't really like that. lawmakers condemn google's actions. they say it's an abuse of power. >> we'll see what happens there. meanwhile, state senator dave court se is set to present a bill now that aims to expand data centers in silicon valley that bill is going before the senate energy utilities and communications committee today. cortez, he says the bill will help sustain the growth of silicon valley's technology sector by expanding data centers not just in silicon valley but across the state to he says a

lack of data centers is underscoring the need right now to meet the demand of this industry and that streamlining the approval process for the center's. we'll ensure that tech industry continues to grow and stay competitive. pg e is warning customers about a significant increase now in scams in an email utility company said that the rate of scams increased at an alarming rate recently. they say scammers can be pretty convincing often targeting those who are most vulnerable. they also target small business owners to during busy customer service hours when they might be distracted pg. e says common trends with these cameras include asking for payment in unconventional ways like prepaid debit cards or gift cards or 3rd party mobile payment applications pg e doesn't do that. they also threatened to disconnect your power because of past due bills. if your payments not made immediately. they might even ask for personal information. again. pge says they don't do any of those

things. if you get a call and somebody is asking for that stuff. it's probably a scam. >> it's springtime, lot of people that the bug to do some spring cleaning and that might include cleaning out your closet. so experts have some tips about what you can do to lighten your load. look at what you've got your closet. and if you want to donate it, make sure it's in good condition. nobody wants to get stuff. damage or ripped are stained or anything like that. so see what he's doing. throw in the wash. make sure it's clean, dry, clean it. if you need to charities. also ask that you separate and label what you are donating and keep socks and shoes in paris together. nobody will settle mixed up in different bags and also donating boots and coats in the winter is better for them. don't donate that now include donate the lighter clothing in the spring and summer that people need and can use right now. and speaking of spring, we are on the tail and now of spring break vacations. and we have

the list of the world's busiest airports, according to the airports council rankings. atlanta's hartsfield-jackson airport was once again the world busiest airport in 2023. 195 million passengers went through there and they have top the list almost every year for more than 2 decades. well, i don't think i've never pass to atlanta. the big change this year is dubai's airport. they went from the 5th busiest to now be second busiest airport in the world. sfo, oakland and san jose. none of those made the top 10 for the busiest airports in the world and, you know, i guess it's a good or bad thing depending on if you want that kind of business and crowds of this is true. yes. all right. 6, 28. 22 is that i didn't want to a 22. >> and up ahead on the kron 4 morning news, we've got the latest on that fatal wrong-way crash last month on 5.80, tell you what people behind the wheel charged with. plus california business owners are in our nation's capital right now working to secure more federal dollars for our

>> 25 in the north bay, a man was hit by a car earlier this his injuries. he was hit ed earlier month on april 6. it was about 09:00pm. he wa walking in the area of corporate center parkway and sebastopol road. he was not in

a march crosswalk or anything like thahe was taken to the hospital and ended up dying on sunday. a driver did cooperate with investigators. they say drugs or alcohol. this was not a factor. >> dui checkpoint in millbrae didn't find any drunk drivers, but they sure found unlicensed ones. mateo county sheriff's office screened almost 1300 vehicles and ended of citing 28 drivers for drivsng without a license. another 5 drivers were cited for not possessing their dmv. issued california driver's license. and while no one was found drinking under the influence, the sheriff's deputies still want to remind drivers that first-time dui offenders can face and average of $13,500 in fines and penalties as well as a suspended license. speaking of driving, gas prices are now almost $0.10 higher than they were last week, least according to triple a nowhere in the bay area. we find gas under $5 anymore. good news is gas prices are about one to

>> a 29. we want to talk more about what we're in store for today with all that sunshine. yeah. and for the week ahead to a whole nothing but really nice weather, john. yeah, the weather ahead. like that sweet spot. some mid 70's out there all the way through the weekend so we can actually get used to it and just talk about rainfall around the corner like the past few months protests. your view outside of the golden gate bridge has cleared out a lot. we saw some fog there earlier. it's out now. we are seeing a little bit of fog around 101 up in the north bay as well as around the tri valley and up into the delta skies are clear and temperatures are going to rise quickly underneath them. alameda already on the cusp of 60 degrees sitting at 59 degrees right now later on today, it will be a lot of 70's for the first time in a few days tomorrow. we'll see a few low 80's popping back up.

a a different protests over the golden gate bridge where the protesters also held up traffic for hours for sarah stinson takes a closer look at what could be next for those arrested. >> i implore people, please. protest were here to protect your rights to protest, but you cannot block roadways. you cannot keep emergency personnel, whether it's ambulance or law enforcement, fire department from getting out to assist other people. >> stern words from california highway patrol after arresting 38 protesters monday. they were among hundreds of people who disrupted traffic for hours at 3 different locations in the bay area. all calling for an immediate cease-fire in gaza. 26 people got arrested after blocking all lanes on the golden gate bridge. 7 people got arrested on i-80 in oakland after a group of locked their arms 280 pound concrete barrels in the middle of traffic lanes. and at the 7th street exit of i-80,

8000's of protesters walked onto the freeway. 5 people got arrested there. chp says the protesters now face a slew of charges. the most serious being conspiracy to commit a crime and false imprisonment, which surprise legal expert stephen clark. >> the chp is obviously taking this very seriously with these arrests suggesting conspiracy that could elevate these charges to a felony. the protesters on the golden gate bridge will be prosecuted by the san francisco district attorney and the protesters in the east bay will be prosecuted by the alameda county district attorney. >> clark says it might be hard to prove the false imprisonment charges. certainly you can argue that the protesters by shutting down access on the bridge you are presenting those drivers. at the same time, the drivers could have got out of thair car and left. so i don't know that that. >> it's false imprisonment charge would hold up in trial.

clark says as a former prosecutor, this will be overall a challenge in court when the defense argues for first amendment rights. i think it will be a difficult call for the da just how to handle these cases. >> because this is a very progressive community. we do respect the right free speech. but at the same time, we don't want to see public safety jeopardized. >> i'm sara stinson reporting kron. 4 news. a 33 right now and prosecutors are charging 2 men who they say are guilty of a robbery will be on charged trial for that. but they're also saying that they're going to be charged. one of them with murder because of this deadly accident happened with the getaway car. the contra costa county da is charging patrick sheckells from oakland. >> with 6 counts including murder and andrea l byrne of stockton with burglary last month. they say the 2 men broke into an l straighter tobacco store stoll products and that led police on a chase. eventually the getaway car went the wrong way on 5.80, near the bay bridge toll

plaza and slammed it head on into 2 vehicles, killing one of those drivers. there is a bride to be was no wedding dress because of a porch pirate. now redwood city is asking for help in finding him. take a look at the man who made off with the dress he stole packages from the front porch, including one of those packages had a $2000 wedding dress. and so now she has no dress. and i don't know how close, you know, the wedding is now, but she's going need to wear something in. this happened last thursday night. 08:30pm, their homes on adams street near madison avenue, just about a half mile away from downtown redwood city. so if you recognize this man, maybe he still got that wedding dress because, you know, it's not going to hit them. >> it 35 is the time. and we have hundreds of california leaders now gathering in our nation's capital for the 52nd annual capped a cap conference capital to capital conference.

will celebrity paris hilton is advocating for a bill now to bring more accountability to youth retreat. youth treatment facilities in california. she joined lawmakers in sacramento yesterday. if the bill is approved, it would require facilities to publicly post information related to the use of restraints and seclusion rooms. hilton has been open about her experience at similar facilities, even testified before congress about it. she says this bill will help protect the state's youth. >> they count ability and children's treatment act increases. transparency. so the public knows what really happens behind closed doors. if these facilities are scared of a simple transparency measure, then i think we should ask them, what do they have to hide? our current system designed to reform and some horrific instances does the exact opposite. >> the bill is currently on the senate side of the legislature. and it does at this point have bipartisan support.

>> for the local election headquarters, southern california senator steven bradford last campaign for lieutenant governor in 2026. senator bradford served in the senate since 2016 and previously served as on assembly. u.s. well gardenia city council. he was also a member of california's reparations task force. he believes that his background as a fighter in the legislature is going to help them in this run for lieutenant governor. >> i'm running for lieutenant governor because i think we're at place and time in the state of california we really need all levels of government working closely, kind of been responsive. i've been engaged. i show up. this is the kind of job that the lieutenant governor's position is. it's not about glam about put your head down and doing the real work. i've done that for 26 years that i've been an elected official. >> and if elected, senator radford would be just the second black person to hold that role, his mentor whose mervyn damali was the first.
