>> now to scott peterson appears in a bay area courtroom. he is trying to overturn his conviction for killing his pregnant wife and their unborn son. we're live with what his attorneys are now requesting and the effort to recall alameda county district attorney pamela price

is moving forward after the register voters confirms there are enough signatures for a recall election will see the community is responding. plus, after being dubbed the great club, the federal bureau of prisons says closing the fci dublin's women's prison. so we'll see what happens now to the women who are incarcerated there and the people who work at this facility. >> station. he's calling news 2. >> thanks for joining us here on kron for news of 2. i'm justine waldman, a hearing for convicted killer scott peterson was held this morning in redwood city. this is the first of 3 hearings that have been set as his new defense team tries to get him a new trial kron. s charles clifford has more now live from redwood city outside of the hall of justice. charles, what happened in court today? >> well, good afternoon to you know, scott peterson appearing in court video conference. but

this is the first of several hearings over the next couple of months in which peterson is trying to get his conviction overturned. tuesday morning, scott peterson appeared in the san mateo county courtroom via video conference from mill creek state prison in amador county. his attorneys from the la innocence project have submitted more than 1500 pages of legal documents. >> requesting evidence and information related to his case. among those documents was a letter asking that any new details they obtain be sealed to protect the identities of those who might provide that information. on tuesday, the innocence project withdrew that letter after the stanislaus county district attorney's office raised concerns that ceiling new information could be problematic. the da's office also said they are struggling to review and respond to the innocence projects large requests for records and evidence in the now. 21 year-old case following tuesday's hearing. there are 2 additional court date scheduled for later this year and which the judge is being asked to rule on defense requests for access to

evidence, documents and witness testimony. the innocence project is also seeking to perform new dna testing on blood samples that were found in a burned out van near the peterson home around the time of laci peterson's disappearance. it's unclear at this point if these hearings will eventually result in a new trial for scott peterson. but attorney paula canny says that it places blood is found in the van. all bets are off. >> let's say that those materials are tested for dna and laci peterson's dna on some of those materials. they would give rise for a good basis for a motion for a new tron. >> the next hearing is in this case are set for may 29th july. 15th. all right, back live now. that is the very latest here in redwood city, charles clifford kron, 4 news. charles, thank you. and that will go to the north bay where 3 people have been arrested for the shooting deaths of 2 teenage girls in napa from over the weekend. >> now police say one of the

victims was 17. the other was 19 officers found the 2 who was shot on saturday and they did not survive. napa. police say now 3 people have been arrested. john nicholson of allay being charged with murder jessica whitton and judith 8 off both of santa rosa have been charged with aiding in a felony. napa. police say all 3 suspects have been charged and booked into the napa county jail. officials say although there have been some arrests, they're still looking for witnesses to the shooting and hoping that they come forward with some more information. >> happening now, the san francisco sheriff's office discussing the recent lockdowns, the 2 jails in the city. they say the jails were locked down after a number of inmate attacks on deputies and staff. >> this happened at county jails 2, 3, where the sheriff's office says inmates hurt 7 staff members since march. 29th. the union representing the deputies is demanding that the california national guard be called in to help. we'll have more on this story as new information comes

into our newsroom. and now the all-women federal correction institution, dublin is going to be shutting down. this follows a years long abuse scandal at that prison that included the convictions and prison sentences for 7 former corrections officers, including the former warden and chaplain. for some call reports now on what happens next. >> rampant abuse and poor living conditions have plagued federal correctional institution, dublin. now, just weeks after a u.s. district judge ordered the appointment and the special master to oversee the all-women prison in the east bay federal bureau of prisons. director cliff peters says the facility will be shuttered. this kin% of a brat closure. >> feels like a total evasion of accountability to or by various incarcerated people. >> and at the candidates in a statement, peters says, quote, over the past several years at fci, dublin, the fb o p has taken unprecedented steps and

provided a tremendous amount of resources to address culture, recruitment and retention aging infrastructure. and most critical employee misconduct despite these steps and resources we have determined that fci dublin is not meeting expected standards and that the best course of action is to close the facility. this decision is being made after ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of those unprecedented steps and additional resources. prison closure in general is, of course something. i support it. >> but it needs to be accompanied releases and with community emily shapiro says instead from speaking with incarcerated people at the facility and survivors of the scandal. >> the announced closure has left inmates, family members and staff scrambling. >> shapiro has been a volunteer advocate for the california coalition for women, prisoners for 8 years and has been visiting inmates for the past 2 years. i've

heard people inside. >> early yesterday morning, people were loaded onto buses and the total chaos and confusion that and pulled it was really scary for people. they were told they had to like packed their belongings, and they only have so much that they're allowed pack. so there are also told to just throw out that they can't pack. and, you know, the cost of commissaries, they expensive. and so they're deciding between like shampoo in photos of family to let peters says no employees will lose their jobs with the closure and the women currently housed there will be transferred to other facilities without providing a timeline. >> adding though, that the fb o p will try to keep them as close to the release locations as possible. peters did not elaborate when asked if the closure is permanent. philippe djegal all kron. 4 >> san francisco congressman

mark to sunday commenting on the closure. the federal correction institution in dublin. in a statement he says the fact that we got to this point is deeply troubling. the top priorities must be the protection of the inmates, their constitutional rights, the job security of the innocent staff and whistleblowers and supporting the local community. he goes on to say this closure does not right. the wrongs that occurred at the facility, which is why it is imperative that federal investigations continue. and we'll talk about our forecast now with a look at the sunny skies here in san francisco are in store for a warm-up today. meteorologist kyla grogan in the weather center with details on all that sun we're enjoying today. yeah. look at that weather. pretty out there today, everybody. you're taking a live look here. >> for my future tower camera. and it's just been a lovely day once again, seeing these temperatures start to go up and you can see to the tune of some nice 70's right now in san jose livermore, concord, santa rosa, all in the low 70's. still some 60's in san francisco in oakland. but you know, a bunch warmer than we were yesterday. half moon bay

about 57 degrees right now. as you can see, stormtracker 4 just showing in a few light high clouds that are up there and that is about it. as we zoom out, you see the reason for all of this, which is that we've got a ridge right here. you can kind of see afbuilding in of high pressure that is sitting off the coast. that's why we're getting the sunshine. that's why we're getting the warmer temperatures. that's pretty much where we're going to stay as we head over the next couple of days. and we're going to warm up a little bit more. wind is also nice and calm. you can see a little bit of wind out of the coming in from the northwest. we're going to notice as we get later in the week. we'll start to see a little more onshore flow that will bring some cooling in. but right now we're going to play that game again where we look at the temperatures from 24 hours ago to now. and this is the difference in those temperatures across the board. we're warmer, in fact, in san francisco and spots like oakland where, you know, 10 degrees warmer than we were this time yesterday. so obviously the trend has begun. as we take a look here from the east bay. again, you can see those blue skies in use in concord is an example tomorrow and thursday. that's when the warmth is going to peak will

>> menlo park man wanted for human trafficking has now been arrested. police. they that they key mackey at hotel in monterey last week and when he was taken into custody, police say they found this loaded gun on him. according to court documents, mackey was involved in a human trafficking situation he's now facing human trafficking and firearms charges. anyone with information about this incident is being asked to

contact police. today, california attorney general bob onto hosting a roundtable discussion with los angeles community leaders highlighting the ongoing efforts to prevent gun violence and identifying best practices to help keep communities safe. his focus equipping locals with the tools necessary to stop the shooting before happens, foster knowledge about accessible resources for the public and enhance partnerships statewide more effectively trying to prevent shootings and interrupt the cycles of trauma and violence in california. >> so often after. i tragic, horrific mass shooting. we we hear interviews of of family members or co-workers or folks, you know, the person and they say often, you know, there's you know, this is not a total surprise to i saw something that was off. i saw something that was wrong. and if that person was empowered and have the education and awareness and had a great gun violence restraining order program san diego has maybe that could have prevented one

of those tragic mass shootings. and if we can prevent those. >> we should. >> no word yet on when these practices could take effect or b presented for consideration. antisemitic incidents have drastically increased in the u.s. and northern california, according to the anti-defamation league incidents of assault, vandalism and harassment are up 140% from 2020. this is the highest level of incidents since the atl started tracking the in 1979. anti-semitic incidents after october, 7th spiked dramatically in response to hamas is attack on israel. mark levine, the direltor of the adl says it's up to all of us to push back against hate. >> we need a whole society response to fight hate. we know there are far more allies to address this outpouring of hate and those who act to undermine american values. that's some great diversity. rowdy and a multitude of cultures. >> the adl released this map

showing anti semitic incidents across the u.s. since october. 7th. they have recorded more than 3200 incidents in 6 months. well, the first of 6 jurors for donald trump's hush money criminal trial have now been chosen. this is coming with lawyers grilling members of the jury pool about their social media post. their political views and their personal lives in order decide whether or not they can fairly sit in judgment of the former president, our washington, d.c., correspondent hannah brandt has more from day 2 in court. >> today in court, the focus was on questioning potential jurors. they're looking for people who say they can be fair and impartial when deciding if the former president committed 34 felonies on day 2 of his criminal trial, donald trump came out swinging strike a disgrace. the trial centers on accusations that trump illegally falsified business records as part of a hush money scheme to cover up

alleged affairs. but he denies those >> that's exactly what it was right now. the court is working through jury selection. the judge has already dismissed dozens of people who say they can not be fair and impartial, but lawyers are questioning dozens more in an effort to find 12 jurors and 6 alternates who will ultimately decide whether or not to convict the former president. back in dc republican congressman troy nehls railed against the trial. america quite honestly should be ashamed. >> of what's taken place stuck court for what's expected to be a weeks-long process. trump expressed frustration about the timing. and president joe biden is doing just that. he's spending the next 3 days making his reelection pitch in pennsylvania, which is

area today signing a climate partnership with norway. the governor was joined by a new region delegation, including the nation's crown prince and norway's minister of trade and industry. the u.s. climate partnership that was signed cement, a framework for collaboration between california and norway to both support climate action and to help grow both respective economies. it's a point pride that we dominate the american solar week dominate in electric vehicles were dominating on battery storage. we're proud of that leadership and we want to see that. >> we will not see that regardless of the prevailing winds. my one political comment regardless the prevailing winds nationally, california is from in advancing its environmental strategies and its environmental leadership. >> addressing criminal justice and prison reform. also part of today's agreement with norway. the governor spent time with this delegation at san quentin discussing the changes being made there in

part based on norway's prison system. we're taking a live look outside from our camera atop of mount tam. some can see what's going on across the bay area. right now. we're enjoying lots of sun in a little warm ups on the way. kyle is here with what's happening we had yet good week to be a meteorologist, a good week to be in the bay area. everybody i talk to somebody who's visiting this week and i said, oh, you got a good >> we're taking a live look here at the embarcadero. you can see people out walking the dog, enjoying the weather temperatures right now. san francisco are in the mid 60's are at 70 degrees, though down in mountain view, 72 in livermore. 73 in santa rose. get the idea. it's nice and warm out there. oakland right now thinking about 69 degrees. if we look at santa rosa, we kind of compare these temperatures yesterday as the blue line today is the yellow line. you can see where rowling just above it. so yesterday we were in the 60's topped off about 66 67 degrees today. going into the 70's not only in santa rosa, but also and walnut creek. so if you're out on the patio, maybe doing a little work out there today,

he picked a good spot. the wind is nice and light to see don't have anything blowing around. we're looking good for baseball game tonight. another great thing to do in the weather is lovely. the oakland a's taking on the st. louis cardinals and they're going to setting up that first pitch about 06:40pm, temperatures in the mid 60's, partly cloudy skies in the wind. a negligible tonight which is a perfect forecast right for some baseball. so enjoy that. if you're headed out to do that, all of this lovely weather is courtesy of high pressure that's sitting here off the coast. it's going to hang with us for the next couple of days. then it does start to relent, but nothing really major knocks it out of the ways we have a big low pressure system coming in after this. right? so we're going to get what's called zonal for a little bit, which means we just kind of hang out. so we warm up tomorrow and thursday. then we start to bring down on friday. but notice this is the part saying the kind of hang out fate friday through monday. we don't have a whole lot of variability in our temperatures. still above average. still some really nice sunshine, particularly as we head into the weekend. i do think sunday will be the better day of the 2. having said that, i don't think

up today at the board of supervisors meeting with those signatures in had those signatures have been verified by the registrar of voters for the county of alameda. they we are here. >> asking for what's right is for the board of supervisors to give us a special election in the next couple of months and not have us wait until november tuesday, leaders a safe say that would tough for everyone. the group behind the effort to recall alameda county district attorney pamela price speaking in front of the county's administration building, also making their presence known at the board of supervisors meeting in had the required amount of signatures needed for a special election. main reason for being here today is to make sure >> that the board of supervisors follows the charter. we've had so many back in force about the chartered, the charter. you specific words without delay. >> immediately. and that's what we needed. and we need to be done. without the light, which today we asked him to

victims, families. >> and concerned citizens who have come together in the face of rising crimes and what they say is a failure by the district attorney to hold perpetrators accountable. the coalition adds price is jeopardizing residents in the safety of businesses by failing to enforce the law, prosecuting criminals and keeping violent offenders off of our streets may not know. but in oakland this year, violent crime, the violent crime index is up 10%. that's up. >> from 20% last year, robberies, violent robberies against our citizens are up already. 28% this year. that's up from 49%. last year. >> issue affecting the recall effort is measure b, which would adopt state guidelines for recalling elected officials, a move that would raise a number of signatures required and give local election officials additional time to schedule a vote. >> now the next board of

israel-hamas war unfolding today at google's headquarters in sunnyvale, demonstrators targeting. >> google at their main offices in the bay area as well as in new york and seattle. those behind the protest one google to stop doing business with israel, which they accused of committing genocide in some employees are also protesting against a contract between google and israel. >> today at a couple of a scuffle. workers are. sitting on the office. the ceo of google cloud to demand an end to the contract project nimbus which is a 1.2 billion dollar contract between the state of israel, including the israeli military, the israeli defense forces. i contract between them and amazon services aws and google cloud. >> the group wants google to end its contract with the

israeli government. and by the >> so chp releasing this video showing how they removed the protesters from concrete barrel drums during yesterday's demonstrations that blocked traffic on 8.80, in oakland and of the golden gate bridge. the protesters use what's called sleeping dragons where they handcuffed themselves and then put their hands through pvc pipes. and then inside these concrete barrels. but they do those that hold on to this piece of rebar inside there. eventually the man in the video here was released from that barrel and then taken into custody. they were showing that why took so long to try to remove the protesters from those freeways and things have settled down after that messy commute all across the bay area that those protesters caused. this all started at 8.80, when the protesters chain themselves to

those. >> 6 concrete filled drums traffic at a standstill both directions on 80 for about 5 hours. then they blocked the southbound lanes of the golden gate bridge chained themselves together. for 4 hours. traffic was shut down in both directions. there. so now what happens to the dozens of people that the chp arrested kron 4, sarah, since since then spoke with a legal expert to find out. i implore people, please. protest were here to protect your rights to protest. >> but you cannot block roadways. you cannot keep emergency personnel, whether it's ambulance or law enforcement, fire department from getting out to assist other people. >> stern words from california highway patrol after arresting 38 protesters monday. they were among hundreds of people who disrupted traffic for hours at 3 different locations in the bay area. all calling for an immediate cease-fire in gaza. 26 people got arrested after blocking all lanes on

the golden gate bridge. 7 people got arrested on i-880, in oakland after a group locked their arms 280 pound concrete barrels in the middle of traffic lanes. and at the 7th street exit of i-80, 8000's of protesters walked onto the freeway. 5 people got arrested there. chp says the protesters now face a slew of charges. the most serious being conspiracy to commit a crime and false imprisonment, which surprise legal expert stephen clark. >> the chp is obviously taking this very seriously with these arrests suggesting conspiracy that could elevate these charges to a felony. the protesters on the golden gate bridge will be prosecuted by the san francisco district attorney and the protesters in the east bay will be prosecuted by the alameda county district attorney. >> clark says it might be hard to prove the false imprisonment charges. certainly you can argue that the protesters by shutting

down access on the bridge you are presenting those drivers. at the same time, the drivers could have got out of their car and left. so i don't know that that. >> it's false imprisonment charge would hold up in trial. clark says as a former prosecutor, this will be overall a challenge in court when the defense argues for first amendment rights. i think it will be a difficult call for the da just how to handle these cases. >> because this is a very progressive community. we do respect the right to free speech. but at the same time, we don't want to see public safety jeopardized. >> i'm sara stinson reporting kron. 4 news >> this was the scene outside of the tesla factory in fremont last night. dozens of demonstrators calling for a cease-fire in gaza. >> they were walking from the warm springs bart station to

the tesla facility and tesla put employees tried putting up some barriers, but protesters took them down and then continue to march on the property. tesla eventually called police and officers then shot pepper pellets at the demonstrators when they start due to a knockdown, the police barricades. >> we will come out in the numbers to make sure that we are hurt. what matters to them is their capital is one of the pressing people here in the states and globally. the more we protest, the more we show up we're going to get. and i just hope that people are ready to come together and stand up to freemont police tell kron 4 they did not make any arrests during last night's gathering at the tesla factory. >> the american jewish committee of san francisco released this statement regarding yesterday's protests. it says in part american jewish community committee of san francisco condemns. >> in the strongest possible terms, the selfish and misguided demonstrations that closed down several san francisco bay area bridges and

adversely impacted thousands of local residents and went on to say we thank law enforcement agencies for doing everything they can to safely put an end to these illegal and disruptive actions. the university of california has canceled its valedictorian speech due to accusations of her being anti-semitic. asked not to the class of 2024. valedictorian was scheduled to speak at this commencement but was told that usc will not allow her to do so for safety reasons. at least 2 student groups are accusing her of sharing antisemitic and anti zionist views and content on social media. some students on campus are expressing their disappointment in this decision. >> these primary reason for not having her be docked for are getting about different speech. i just a few concerns is how are you able to protect some of the world's biggest leaders who many, many on this campus? i promise you a court and have a head in disgust. you our allies and with la region are able to protect them but not protect of the senate on.

>> about to torrey and is not convinced that the school is worried about her safety. she says that she's not aware of any threats against her and wanted to use the speech to inspire hope. usc will host around 65,000 people in 19,000 graduates at its los angeles campus for the commencement ceremony on may 10th. san pablo police arresting a suspect for vandalizing a bank. the suspect vandalized a local bank last night. they say using weapons that are shown here when officers tried to take him into custody. they say he ran towards a crowded store. no one was hurt and police were able to arrest him safely. now caltrain had an accident on the peninsula that hurt the driver of this car near the san martine station. the car was on the tracks last night when a southbound train hit it. the driver went to the hospital for treatment about 25 passengers on the train at the time. none of them were hurt. police are looking into why the car was on the tracks.

and we're taking a live look outside. look at north towards the golden gate bridge and it's nice and green out there. we've kind of hit that sweet spot. kyle aware we're enjoying all the benefits, the rain. it's so nice out there right now and things are still warming up across the country to they are. and i wanted to talk a little bit just seen yesterday. i mention that would cold air and warm air come together. you get the potential for a dangerous weather. >> you get severe thunderstorms and sometimes tornadoes. and you can see as we take a look here, minneapolis right now. 46 degrees. notice chicago's at 78. that's a huge temperature gradient. and just where that is, we're starting to see where we have this tornado watch today. you see the little boxes in red and that's our tornado warnings that are happening right now in parts of iowa. and you can see also some of that moving now in towards illinois as well. so as we zoom in here, it is that big line of storms that is thought throwing some cells that could be turned attic. and you can see right here this one until about 4.45. so this line is going to be moving towards the north and the east. and my concern here is that it's now starting to get in just a very heavily

go for a score say that we can do this together. we can conquer this together. of course, the stigma of growing up where we come from this like ali, therapy might you know, >> i i and so we shut it down. and we and when and as we as we high from it, it grows and grows and amplifies. and by the time that it's treated or about the time that it reaches the surface is too late because we've already done something. we reacted and the consequences are far great for us to recover from. but there are several my brother kuriga. he has these mental wellness programs and he's laid the blueprint for many rather, so learn how to organize and galvanize and come together. and as we stand on the precipice of continuing to try to get the black man and man in general. i don't want people to just think that this is just only black people can come. this is open up tall man of all walks of life. our our need to be convivial was something that should be put on the forefront. that is something that as needed for a person to be happy and to be

get off the eagle of being, you know, being all dad has always right. but fathers, relationships, relationships with their significant other partners forgiveness. some of the things of, you know, learning just certain things that we're dealing with. an watching brothers come out and talk about it from different walks of life is like, wow, wow, to see people that have may have spent time in prison to people that have may have been gone away in college and seeing how their struggle are so connected. the next isn't being that i'm thankful that. as i as an organizer of this, along with the rest of the people that's helping us that we're doing this work because it's so necessary is so necessary as brotherhood's of meetings of rather sitting now praying together, talking together, meditating together, we have drums coming out from the spiritual advice, bar and eating together. this is what's needed and i'm just happy to be a somebody that's on the forefront of assembling. but i only play a small role as many other people have roles that they
