>> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 6. >> good morning and thanks for waking up with us on a wednesday and i'm james. we've got a nice dry start to the day today. looks like that's going to be the pattern for why little sunscreen morning, john. yes, that sunscreen get some good use out of it. hopefully to find it. we're looking outside at what is a nice cool morning yet again, very similar to the past couple of mornings. >> this afternoon, just as warm if not even the warmer for other law of the bay area today. but get a look outside right now. and you can see that we do have the golden gate bridge right here with a little bit of fog streaming through it. currently you can see that there's just the very top of the bridge streaming through that fog. most of us visibility is fine. but there are a couple of spots of fog at the coast. so watch your highway 101 travel this morning. temperatures currently are in the 40's to 50's with berkeley and san mateo sitting at 51 degrees nevado petaluma and santa rosa each in the mid to upper 40's

everyone. this decision from san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins to not pursue the charges, really came as a shock for many after a california highway patrol did make numerous arrests for numerous offenses of those who did shut down that golden gate bridge. take a look. this is video from monday morning at around 8.30, of what the scene really looked like at the time pro-palestinian protesters did take over the bridge, stopping traffic both ways and in total, 26 protesters were arrested by chp for false imprisonment, unlawful assembly and conspiracy to commit a crime. now during their time on the bridge, they did use pipes, chains and locks making things difficult for law enforcement to get them off of the road and get traffic flowing again. and despite the havoc that it caused when it comes to numerous traffic areas. san francisco da, brooke jenkins says there was just not enough clear evidence to charge these 26 protesters causing her to miss the 48 hour deadline filing charges adding that she needed video of the arrested protesters caught directly in the act and says that the

public does have any of that information or videos. to contact her office says she can pass it along to chp. take a listen to what she had to say regarding these protest. >> we have been in constant communication with chp moran regarding their investigation since these arrests were made. once the investigation is complete, we will have to conduct an individualized assessment of the evidence to see what charges should be filed against which individuals that participated. >> as of this morning, those protesters were released from jail and right on the other side of the bay over in alameda county, pro-palestinian protesters also shut down the northbound lanes of 8.80, on monday morning causing traffic to be at a standstill for miles after cementing their arms into oil barrels in sitting across the freeway. however, alameda county district attorney pamela price is yet to make a statement on if

those protesters i have or will be charged with any of those actions. now back out here live as we get more information from officials on how they plan to move forward. we'll keep you updated. the district attorney for san francisco is asking anyone with information to contact her office is in the coming days. that's a very latest reporting live from the golden gate bridge michael thomas story. james, we'll send it back to thank you, michael. >> all right. well, it's 603. we've got pro-palestinian. demonstrators also blocking entrances to a weapons manufacturer. name general dynamics, ordnance and tactical systems. they're located down in heels. brings all happened organizes say they blocked the entrances for more than 3 hours. the company builds. >> guns, missiles, rockets and ammunition the protesters say they refuse to be part of the war machine. so they were out there making their voices heard. and on the peninsula, protesters gathered outside the google headquarters in sunnyvale calling on google to stop doing business with

israel because of what's going on with the israel and gaza conflict. sunnyvale police say about 80 people were there around 10:30am, in the morning yesterday. most of them left by about lunchtime. but 5 protesters did stay their past 6.30, last night. and police eventually arrested them for trespassing. in the south bay. a former youth pastor in san jose now charged with committing crimes against young women. brett franklin by master is being charged now with 6 counts of lewd acts with a girl from the time she was 8 until she was 13. he worked as a youth group director and pastor at the river church community in san jose. and in a report filed by santa clara county district attorney's office, youth group members claim that by master groomed teenagers and performed lewd acts on them. in a statement kron 4 by masters lawyer, though, denies the allegations calling them the latest in a slanders campaign to destroy with the

lawyer says is a good citizen. fact, he went on to say, quote, while mister by master worked at the riverside or at work at the river, he ministered on christian ideas of health, all of these lessons were voluntary and were part of a larger curriculum that was approved by the river. >> including a number of parents on the board. now, the river church also released a statement saying, quote, we are deeply saddened by these developments and continue to express our concerns, prayers and support for the young people who are bravely raised their voices for all victims of abuse and for our entire church community. during these distressing times in 2019, by master left the church and began working at healing grove health center, which is a faith-based clinic in san jose. the health center has placed by master on administrative leave, telling us they had no further details at this time by master appeared in court last week and his bail has been set at $400,000. he'll be in court this friday likely to ask a

judge to reduce that bail. >> its 606, and a baseball league in east bay is trying to rebuild because they were burglarized over the weekend. it's the junior optimist baseball league and they have a go fund me now because thieves stole about $15,000 worth of equipment. the fees also vandalize a number of pieces of property and now they have to fix and replace those to the organization is asking for help. leaders behind the effort recall. how are kind to store where is for the board of supervisors to give us a special election in the next couple of months. >> and not have us wait until november. leaders behind the effort to recall alameda county district attorney pamela price were at the board of supervisors meeting yesterday with enough signatures. >> to put the recall on the ballot on monday. the registrar of voters validated about 75,000 signatures. and now it's up to the board to set a date for the recall. the

next board of supervisors meeting is april 30 u.s.. >> well, while opponents of price are excited, the registrar of voters has declared legal signatures gathered to force a recall, a recall election. >> may still never happened. and that is because prices attorneys says that this recall was illegal kron four's. dan kerman has the details. embattled alameda county district attorney pamela price may soon be going to war with their own county. the reason the attempt to recall her, we believe that the recall is the waggle jim sutton is the attorney for the pamela price campaign. >> well, the registrar of voters says enough valid signatures have been gathered to move the recalled forward. sutton says the recall is illegal because the county did not follow its own rules dictated by the county's charter. that's county charter is very clear that. >> the registrar house to verify all the signatures within 10 days. >> sutton says instead the county took more than 5 weeks

to verify the signatures. another problem, some signature gatherers were from outside the county. another violation of the charter. the county must comply with the law to say what she has to comply with the law. >> and when the county charter is so clear about these roles and we see that from the beginning, the county seems to be picking and choosing which. in the lot was the fall in which it doesn't want to follow. the registrar of voters is expected to certify the vote at the board of supervisors meeting april 30th. >> it's at that time. the board can also set a date for the recall election itself. district attorney plans to before that time asked the board of supervisors to not schedule because it's illegal. if the board moves forward anyway, it's likely district attorney pamela price. we'll sue the county. it's a writ of mandate against the county. asking the court to tell the county that it cannot move forward with election because it violates the county

charter. >> we reached out to the alameda county counsel's office for comment. they didn't get back to us. dan kerman kron. 4 news. >> kron 4 is your local elections headquarters and the recount of the ballots cast in the congressional seat race to replace an action is now underway. it's happening because of the. tide that it never happened before. but a tie between assemblyman evan low and santa clara county supervisor joe submitting and at the santa clara county registrar of voters, the request to county 150,000 votes was asked to be by machine, not by hand. it's faster but it's not cheaper. >> the estimated duration of this recount can last anywhere between one and 2 weeks. and we require $12,000 deposit daily. additional fees can incur each state depending on what the requests are wants examine. >> well, the person who asked for the recount, jonathan

padilla reportedly has ties to former san jose mayor sam liccardo. the carter who is already on the november ballot is not confirming that. but but the reportedly asked for the recount on behalf of evan low. although lows campaign says that's not true. meantime, the fact that some indian and low each received the exact same number of votes is still considered amazing. even the people at the registrar's office. >> yeah, this is and extraordinary event yeah, unique we're just we're handling it day by doing. >> san mateo county, meanwhile, confirms that workers are getting those ballots ready for. the recount, which is expected to begin today. >> time now 6.11, and still ahead on the kron, 4 morning news advocates for prisoners are concerned about the reason behind the closure of the women's prison in dublin. we're going to see why there abruptly shuttering facility.

things that you need to know today. police are investigating the cause. a man shed ashore. his body was found in the berkeley marina last saturday night. it's a man in his 50's and investigators are now looking into the cause of death. the san francisco sheriff's office says the lockdown that one of its jails is ending today. this is 2 jails have been

locked down because of a number of inmate attacks on deputies and staff december jail will reopen later this week. santa clara county residents could see higher water bills in the upcoming year valley. water is spending a lot of money to fix 2 dams. so they want to raise charges to cover that cost could be in about 8.78 a month extra to customers bills. the oakland ballers are hopeful as the city of oakland is considering a plan to renovate and it would be about 1.6 million dollars to get them in reliant raimondi park and have it ready for the 2024 spring season. a final decision on that is set for april 30th. >> well, we know that earthquakes can happen at any time here in california and pg e is hosting earthquake awareness events this month. in fact, yesterday in san ramon, they showcased an earthquake simulator. we've seen these before, right? michael thomas was in last time it came around. it simulates a 7.5 earthquake and

are going to remain dry, at least over the next 10 days. now, a long-range models are pointing towards the very of april. your final weekend of april, possibility of a little bit of a switch-up occurring. but for now, at least the next 10 days are looking nice and dry and pretty comfortable as well. today is going to be a bit warmer than yesterday with a few of us reaching the low 80's, mostly just the south bay tomorrow, very similar to that. let's get a look at these temperatures for francisco mission in financial district back up in the low 70's, coastal areas, mostly in the 60's. while the 70's for most of the rest of us, we do have 80's in the south bay today that like santa clara and san jose getting up to 80 81 degrees east bay temps pretty close in some cases, fremont walnut creek conquered in danville, each getting up to 79 today. well, richmond through oakl nd and san leandro in the mid 70's. a look ahead shows tomorrow's temperatures very similar to today's little cooler this

peterson appeared in court redwood city for the first of 3 hearings. >> his defense team is trying to get a new trial for the murder of his wife, laci and their unborn son. connor. he appeared in san mateo court on video conferences. you can see from prison yesterday. his attorneys are from the la innocence project and they submitted more than 1500 pages of legal documents requesting evidence and information in this case. the innocence project is looking to retest evidence found near the peterson home around the time laci peterson disappeared. >> say that those materials are tested for dna and laci peterson's dna on some of those materials to would give rise for a good basis for a motion for a new tron. >> the next hearing in the case is set for may 29th. and then there's another one for july. 15th. there's a renewed

push in the south bay to brett re-sentenced inmates are on death row. yes, santa clara county district attorney jeff rosen is leading that charge and kron four's jack moment reports. >> over time, my thinking has change. it's a new perspective on justice for a long time district attorney who spent a decade prosecuting rape and murder cases in santa clara county. jeff rosen says he no longer thinks the death penalty is justified. >> adding, well, california hasn't executed anyone since 2006 and governor gavin newsom put a moratorium on it in 2018. santa clara county still has 15 inmates on death row. >> racism and other kinds of biases have deeply affected our country since its founding. his goal now is to ask that all 15 of these individuals have their sentences changed from death to life without the possibility of parole and for a local faith leaders such as san jose bishop oscar cantu. this is a progressive step. but are we a throwaway culture? where can simply

throw away >> individuals bishop can't who recently went to alabama where he met with other bishops who support getting rid of the death penalty. yes, we do want justice to be served. >> but we also don't want to play god either. my hope is that this will help too. and a lot of the litigation around the death penalty. meantime, da rosen says he's spoken with many of the victims families in related cases, some support his efforts. >> others not so much, but for rosen justices still served as best. it can with some of the worst criminal offenders spending the rest of their lives behind bars while at the same time. >> trying to strengthen and make our justice system more fair. and the district attorney says that it's hard to tell how easy or difficult it will be because each of these cases for the 15 people currently sitting on death row will be taken individually. so the process will take months. the district attorney tells me the first case for that first inmate on death row. it set

for about 2 months from now. for now, we're in san jose jack moment. kron 4 news. >> in the south bay, santa clara's board of supervisors voted in favor of creating a report to help keep the regional medical center open. and this comes hours after the public testimony against the closure of the trauma center supervisor cindy chavez says the closing the center, what it meant people would have who had a stroke or heart attack or are in a car accident would have to travel a lot further to get it to the help they need it. supervisors are now calling on the state department of health services to use its authority to prevent the shutdown. the supervisors believe that if they can demonstrate why the trauma center closure is a major public safety danger. well, then the state would be obligated to not allow it to close. we'll take a break here at 6.22. >> coming up on the kron 4 morning news detectives have identified the body now that was found in the oakland estuary. we'll tell you why they believe that bodies out of the woman, the suspected of the woman, the suspected killed by her son in law.

suspect or suspects at this point. but anyone with information is asked to call san francisco police. brett, would police have arrested 2 men from fairfield for stealing buckets of paint. so the theft happened at a home depot about 6 o'clock sunday night. police say daniel clark and thomas hodges used a magnetic device to deactivate security devices before than stealing those buckets of paint. officers say they found several more buckets of paint in their truck along with cash. both men now been arrested on suspicion of organized retail theft, conspiracy to commit a crime and other related offenses. >> its 6.25, and the north bay novato police are reminding you that portsmouth drive brooklyn drive and chesapeake lane are going to be closed. intermittently throughout today. you can see them here on your screen. we've marked them out so that you can take a look at the area that's going to be affected from 08:00am to 08:00pm thinking they're going to be delays there. so you want to work your way around that

neighborhood in the east bay, the city of pittsburgh, the city council awarded a half-million dollar contract to a general and jun earring contractors so that the complex of safety improvements on crestview drive and that includes new pavement, markings and raised medians and pedestrian crossings as well at 6 intersections. they're going to start at nina place and go all the way down to william way. the city recognized that crestview area as say there are too many speeding cars and doing donuts. the intersections police have also increased their enforcement that area. we're going to take a break as we approach 6.27. up next, though, police are still looking for the suspect who robbed a mail carrier at (cat 1) friskies world! that they're going to be closing that prison following a years long abuse scandal. kron four's philippe djegal has details. >> emily shapiro has been a volunteer advocate for the california coalition for women prisoners for 8 years and has been visiting inmates at federal correctional institution. dublin for the past 2 years. she's concerned by the abrupt announcement, but the troubled facility is closing their way. that it's happening is a bad thing. just weeks after a u.s. district judge ordered the appointment of a special master to oversee the all-women prison in the east bay federal bureau of prisons. director colette peters says the facility will be shuttered. one plagued by rampant abuse and poor living conditions. the back of opiate, the 19 that the prison is closed, doesn't feel like they're admitting their culpability in harming people inside. >> i feel what's happening is.

to me, i believe essentially trying to silence and disappear. the people who really put a lot on the line to call out the abusive abuses effort. in a statement, peters says, quote, over the past several years at fci, dublin, the fb o p has taken unprecedented steps and provided a tremendous amount of resources. >> to address culture, recruitment and retention aging infrastructure and most critical employee misconduct. >> despite these steps and resources, we have determined that fci, dublin is not meeting expected standards and that the best course of action is to close the facility. this decision is being made after ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of those unprecedented steps and additional resources like silent seen in dispensing blowers and >> putting an end to the bad

press surrounding the prison without actually address seen the harmons. colette peters says no employees will lose their jobs with the closure and the women currently house. there will be transferred to other facilities without providing a timeline. we're defining the closure as permanent. philippe djegal all kron. 4 news. >> 6.33. right now and the san francisco sheriff's office says the lockdown at one of their jails is ending today. this has to jails have been locked down because of a number of inmate have attacked deputies and staff the other jail in san bruno is going to reopen later this week after 9 members of jail staff there were assaulted by inmates. >> in the east bay, detectives in san pablo identified the body of a woman that was found back in for september in the oakland estuary. they believe she was killed by her son in law. they say the body belongs to. q tran and police have been looking for her and her daughter so lie since she went missing back in september last

month. fuchs vo was arrested and investigators say that vo called police telling them the women took off in a car after an argument. but then police later found that car in oakland and vote was driving it. police say they gathered more evidence and they believe now that the man was involved in the death of both women and their disappearance. the body of ly has not yet been found. well, police now investigating after a body of a man washed ashore in the berkeley marina. they say that body was found last saturday evening. they think it belongs to a main his 50's. investigators are looking now and whether this death is a suspicious one or not. we'll let you know when we find out. >> time now is 6.35. and a mail the up usps was attacked and robbed at gunpoint in union city. and police now looking for the attacker even offering a reward finding him. kron 4 sarah stinson has the story.

>> a mail carrier assaulted and robbed at gunpoint here in union city in the middle of the afternoon. the thieves also took off with a postal key. i spoke with a postal inspector who says this could result in mail being stolen from people who live in that neighborhood where the robbery took place. for us a very high priority investigation. another u.s. postal service mail carrier attacked on the job. this time the postal employee was assaulted and robbed at gunpoint in union city. it happened around 2 saturday afternoon on granada way off regions boulevard. >> union city police responded in say the mail carrier was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. postal police are working around the clock to identify and find the attacker. usps has put out $150,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the person or people involved of

the safety of letter carriers is our number one concern. jeff fitch is a postal inspector. he says people who live in this union city neighborhood should be on high alert if they see you know. >> 3, 4, weeks, credit card statements or bank statements where there's transaction they did not make. contact u.s. or contact. union city police department fitch says in the last 4 years usps.has seen an uptick in mail carrier robberies. it's been all over the bay area. we have robberies in san francisco. we've had properties here oakland. >> berkeley. that the number of different cities just last month kron 4 reported on postal worker being robbed in oakland. investigators shared this photo of the suspect who they're still searching for. there's $150,000 reward offered in this case as well. anybody has information that any of these robberies that we publicized contact us at the 24 hour number, the 877-876-2455.

>> if the person or people involved in this robbery are caught and convicted, they would face 2 felonies for allegedly stealing the postal people, but also assaulting the mail carrier that could result in up to 35 years behind bars. i'm sara stinson reporting in union city. back to you. >> 6.37 is the time. and as you can see here, long lead. that's a memorial that is growing now for 2 teenage girls who were killed over the weekend in napa. police have arrested 3 people in connection with the murders. john nicholson, junior of allay is charged with 2 counts of murder. and jessica whitton and judith adolph both of santa rosa have been charged with aiding in a felony that getting the attention of visitors in this or royal for the 17 year-old and 19 year-old who were killed. >> because it is sad and they see little girls should not. this should not happen to them is where live and eat and sleep. you should never be scared to come outside. the
