>> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at >> good morning. a lot of stories on tap for you this morning, including a former youth pastor in san jose was now charged with crimes against children and then in the east bay, alameda county district attorney pamela price speaking out now that the recall effort against her is moving forward and we've moved on from the protest at the golden gate bridge that shut down the bridge on monday. but >> so far, no charges against the protesters will see wine. good morning. i'm daria and i'm james and we'll get those stories in a moment. but first, a great shot here. the golden gate bridge from our sutro tower camera have very clear out there and more sunshine on the way high. yep, nt of it, no shortage of it. in fact, today is going to be a bit warmer than it was yesterday across the bay area. >> got the sunshine full force out there epo and a look from above shows you all that sunshine we're seeing as well from mount tam into the bay

e seeing clear skies today. little bit of fog out into the delta currently. not a lot of it up in the north bay. this morning, though, temperatures in the 40's to 50's right now, oakland and alameda at 57 right now. hayward is our closest spot to 60 degrees sitting at 59 degrees currently later on today. it's going to be the low 80's for some of the south bay 70's for most of the rest of us. i'll give you that forecast ahead, rain. all right, john, thank you for that. and bridges pretty busy in 8 o'clock hour. >> good news is the accident was on the bay bridge. looks like that's about clear. now. drive times is a pretty consistent around. 21 minutes. most of that accident. 31 minutes on the 7 to bridge. you might think there are delays here, but that's just a little slower getting on that bridge 80 richmond center fell bridge 15 minutes. golden gate bridge around. 38 minutes 101, in the north is a little slow checking on those highways across the bay are seeing a lot more red now in regions. back to you. thanks. a lot rain and the time is 801. in

our top story. no charges yet against the protesters who shut down the golden gate bridge on monday for our yes. san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins says she needs more evidence. >> robert michael thomas live at the golden gate bridge to explain michael. >> hey, good morning. everyone will the decision from san francisco da brooke jenkins to not file those charges against protesters and missing that deadline is really causing a little bit of concern for some people in the north bay, especially after california highway patrol says they already brought forth numerous reasons of why they were arrested in what she could have moved forward with. take a look. this is video of what the bay bridge looked like. give me the golden gate bridge. look like on monday morning at around 8.30, this was after pro-palestinian protesters took over the bridge and stop traffic both ways and total. 26 protesters were arrested by chp for false imprisonment, unlawful assembly and conspiracy to commit a crime. protesters use pipes, chains and locks making things difficult for law enforcement to get them off the road and get traffic

moving. but despite the havoc caused san francisco da, brooke jenkins says there was no clear evidence to charge these. 26 protesters causing her to miss. a 48 hour deadline on filing those charges, adding that she needed exact video of those arrested. protesters caught in the act. and she says if the public has any of those videos to reach out to her office so she can pass it along to chp. but take a listen to what she had to say regarding the incident. >> we have been in constant communication with chp moran regarding their investigation since these arrests were made. once the investigation is complete, we will have to conduct an individualized assessment of the evidence to see what charges should be filed against which individuals that participated. >> now, as of this morning, those protesters are currently released and out of jail and across the bay over in alameda county, pro-palestinian protesters also shut down the northbound lanes of 8.80,

causing traffic to be at a standstill for miles after cementing their arms into oil barrels and sitting across the freeway. however, alameda county district attorney pamela price has yet to make a statement on if those protesters will be charged. now back out here live, we did talk to some residents over in the north bay this morning and you'll hear from them. and next coming hour. but essentially they do think that protesters should have been charged, but you'll hear all of that coming up at 9 o'clock demonstrators actually blocked entrances to a weapons manufacturer, name general dynamics, ordnance and tactical systems. you see them. they're out there yesterday. >> in healdsburg. yeah. they say they were blocking the entrances for more than 3 hours because the company builds guns and rockets and ammunition. and the protesters don't want to be part of the

war machine. also in the south bay, protesters gathered yesterday. they were outside of the google facility in sunnyvale. they want google to stop doing business with israel. again, this is in sunnyvale and there are about 80 people who are outside that facility 10:30am, in the morning yesterday. most of them ended up leaving on their own around lunchtime. but there were 5 protesters to stay stay there. and they were still passed 6, 30 there in the evening. and police eventually arrested them for trespassing. >> in the south bay, a former youth pastor in san jose is now charged with committing crimes against young women. brett franklin by master is facing 6 counts of committing lewd acts with a girl from the time she was 8 until she was 13. he worked as a youth group director and pastor at the river church community in san jose. and according to the santa clara county district attorney's office youth group members claim by master groomed teenagers and performed lewd acts on them. in a statement to kron 4 by

masters lawyer denies the allegations claiming that they're all part of a slanderous campaign to destroy his client's reputation. he says, quote, while mister by master worked at the river, he ministered on the christian ideas of health. all of the lessons were voluntary and were part of a larger curriculum that was approved by the river, including a number of parents on the board. now, the river church also released a statement and it read, quote, we are deeply saddened by these developments and continue to express our concerns, prayers and support for the young people who briefly raised their voices for all victims of abuse. and for our entire church community. during these distressing times and quote, now in 2019 by master left the church for a job at healing grove health center, which is a faith based clinic san jose. he's currently on administrative leave there by master will be in court this friday when he's expected to ask the judge to reduce his $400,000 bail.

>> in the east bay, a baseball league has to rebuild now because they were burglarized over the weekend. the junior optimist baseball league. somebody stole $15,000 of equipment from them and that he's also vandalized a number saying so they have to replace repair and they are asking for help and donations to rebuild. there's a gofundme page if you're interested. so today we are here. >> asking for what's right is for the board of supervisors to give us a special election in the next couple of months and not have us wait until november. >> that's the group behind the effort to recall alameda county district attorney pamela price outside of the board of supervisors meeting yesterday with the signatures for the recall after monday when the rest are voters validated nearly 75,000 signatures? what's up next? is the board to vote on this? and their meeting is set for april 30th. well.

>> even though those recall supporters have collected enough signatures that doesn't necessarily guarantee a recall election will actually happen. that is because prices attorney says that the effort is illegal. kron four's dan kerman has more. embattled alameda county district attorney pamela price may soon be going to war with their own county. the reason the attempt to recall her, we believe that the recall is the waggle jim sutton is the attorney for the pamela price campaign. >> well, the registrar of voters says enough valid signatures have been gathered to move the recalled forward. sutton says the recall is illegal because the county did not follow its own rules dictated by the county's charter. that's county charter is very clear that. >> the registrar house to verify all the signatures within 10 days. >> sutton says instead the county took more than 5 weeks to verify the signatures. another problem, some signature gatherers were from outside the county. another violation of the charter. the county must comply with the

law to say what she has to comply with the law. >> and when the county charter is so clear about these roles and we see that from the beginning, the county seems to picking and choosing which. in the lot was the fall and which it doesn't want to follow. the registrar of voters is expected to certify the vote at the board of supervisors meeting april 30th. >> it's at that time. the board can also set a date for the recall election itself. district attorney plans to before that time asked the board of supervisors to not schedule action because it's illegal. if the board moves forward anyway, it's likely district attorney pamela price. we'll sue the county. it's a writ of mandate against the county. asking the court to tell the county that it cannot move forward with this election because it violates the county charter. >> we reached out to the alameda county counsel's office for comment. they didn't get back to us. dan kerman kron. 4 news.

>> well, kron 4 is your local election headquarters and santa clara county has started recounting its ballots in the race to replace an issue in congress at the moment. assemblymember evan low and santa clara county supervisor joe, some indian are tied for second place. this recount will decide who moves on to face. former san jose mayor sam liccardo on the november ballot. now recounting the 150,000 ballots in santa clara county will not be done by hand, but rather by machine, which isn't cheap. but it is fast. >> the estimated duration of this recount can last anywhere between one and 2 weeks. and we require a $12,000 deposit daily. additional fees can incur each state depending on what the requester wants examine. >> well, the person who asked for the recount is jonathan padilla. he reportedly has ties to former san jose mayor sam liccardo. padilla was as we understand finance director for the carters 2014 campaign for mayor. and he's also a current donors to his campaign. mcardle hasn't

responded to requests for comments. padilla, though, says he actually asked for the recount on behalf of evan low, although those campaign says that's not true in any yeah, this is >> and extraordinary event. yeah, they're unique we're just we're handling it day by day. >> yeah, that's the rest. are voters reacting to the fact that we've never seen a tie before now? santa clara is one of 2 counties to have have been requested to recount their ballots. the other san mateo county and officials there confirmed that their recount is expected to start today that i'm ok, so time now is a 10. another story that we're following is the sfmta. >> board of directors which has just voted to finalize the plans and installing those speed cameras around the city in 2023, there was a state bill that past allowing san francisco and 5 other cities to implement a 5 year safety camera pilot program. and that

lets the sfmta install 33 speed cameras on streets of the history of speeding or severe fatal crashes. it's 8.11 and still ahead on the kron, 4 morning news advocates for prisoners are concerned about what is happening behind bars in the troubled. >> women's prison in the east bay in dublin will see why they think that closing it would allow those who are guilty to get off the hook. and after the break, reports say that cheddar biscuit, creator red lobster. may have to cut back on costs. we'll tell you why.

18th anniversary of so i'm sure we'll see something about that, too. but we'll cover live as we do every nothing alarming about this forecast. no good. no such thing as earthquake weather. no down. not that we know is it's just a mess. seems like a although if there was any sort of weather to get outside this is that we abhor share and hey, i'm going to be out there hopefully a little bit today as san jose is going to be one of our warmer spots getting up to the low 80's today in san jose. one of our warmer areas in the bay that we've had so far this year. in fact, now we are looking out there clear skies. we even saw less fog this morning up in the north bay. so that was a nice start for high pressure. ridge is going to stay in place this time around. so it's a prolonged round of drier weather this time. a lot of long-range models are indicating the end of april is the time that we may start to see something coming through in disrupting this otherwise dry trend. that's still a whole long ways off, though. so in the meantime, we're just looking at dry weather through

the weekend and really into next week, too. skies will be relatively clear into today and tomorrow, just a few clouds here and there and these are 2 warmest days of the forecast. that's going to get a few spots up to the low 80's. but most of us will still stay in those 70's in some 60's out along the coastline. burlingame at 74 degrees today, looking at foster city. also at 74 south bay temperatures. you'll be in the low 80's. our warmest spots, san jose and campbell being at 81 degrees mid to upper 70's across the east bay hayward and san leandro at 76. well, oakland at 75 today, north bay temps pretty warm pittsburgher all the way up to 79 today tomorrow, just as warm as today. friday, we get a little bit cooler, but mid 70's to upper 60's is a pretty nice range to hang out in for the weekend. next week. looks very similar to that. great. all right, john, thank you for that long. you can see pretty busy in our 8 o'clock hour. >> most of iowa is covered and ran from the north. a long one. a one 80 or in the east bay. as you're traveling to

emeryville, 8.80, as you're heading from hayward all the way into fremont things. a little slow to 80's. probably the light is highway at this hour. a 14 minute ride into the city. last hour we had an accident on the bay bridge. took us up to about 23 minutes of the match. they got that off pretty quickly. 3 men are on the mateo bridge, 8 80's, a little slow getting on that bridge. there. 15 minutes in the south bay, 1, 0, one. 85 to menlo park on 2, 80 82 2.37. not ask ingest it. and a 55 minute ride to atlanta down to 37. if you're hopping on there right now, certainly give yourself a little extra time. are you back to you? thanks. a lot rain. it 8.17, and convicted wife killer scott peterson appeared in court redwood city yesterday. he had the first of 3 hearings. >> trying to get a new trial. he appeared a through a video conference in the san mateo county courtroom. his attorneys are from the la innocence project and they submitted more than 1500 pages. a legal documents asking for evidence and

information in the case where he was convicted of killing his pregnant wife, laci and their unborn son, connor. and the bodies were found in the san francisco bay. the innocence project is also looking to retest some evidence that was found near the peterson home around the time that laci disappeared. >> say that those materials are tested for dna and laci peterson's dna on some of those materials. >> that to would give rise for a good basis for a motion for a new >> the next hearings are set for may 29th and july 15th. >> well, there is renewed push in the south bay to re-sentenced inmates that are currently on death row santa clara county district attorney jeff rosen is leading the charge. kron four's jack moment explains why. over time. my thinking has change. it's a new perspective on justice for a long time

district attorney who spent a decade prosecuting rape and murder cases in santa clara county. jeff rosen says he no longer thinks the death penalty is justified. >> adding, well, california hasn't executed anyone since 2006 and governor gavin newsom put a moratorium on it in 2018. santa clara county still has 15 inmates on death row. >> racism and other kinds of biases have deeply affected our country since its founding. his goal now is to ask that all 15 of these individuals have their sentences changed from death to life without the possibility of parole and for a local faith leaders such as san jose bishop oscar cantu. this is a progressive step. but are we a throwaway culture? >> where can simply throw away individuals. bishop can't who recently went to alabama where he met with other bishops who support getting rid of the death penalty. yes, we do want justice to be served. >> but we also don't want to play god either. my hope is

that this will help too. and a lot of the litigation around the death penalty. meantime, da rosen says he's spoken with many of the victims families in related cases, some support his efforts. >> others not so much, but for rosen justices still served as best. it can with some of the worst criminal offenders spending the rest of their lives behind bars while at the same time. >> trying to strengthen and make our justice system more fair. and the district attorney says that it's hard to tell how easy or difficult it will be because each of these cases for the 15 people currently sitting on death row will be taken individually. so the process will take months. the district attorney tells me the first case for that first inmate on death row. it set for about 2 months from now. for now, we're in san jose jack moment. kron 4 news. >> in the south bay, the santa clara county board of supervisors has voted in favor of supporting the effort to keep the regional medical center open. this comes after hours of public testimony

against the closure of the trauma center. there supervisor cindy chavez says that closing that center would mean people who suffered a stroke or a heart attack or involved in a car accident would have to go a lot further to get the help they need. supervisors are now calling on the state department of health to use its powers to keep that trauma center open. the supervisors believe that if they can demonstrate why that trauma center is and the closure of it would be a major safety danger. well, the state would be obligated to keep it open. >> it's a 21. and would he like at red lobster? red lobster might be getting ready to file for bankruptcy. the chain looks like they want to restructure their debt. a recording to a report that came out in bloomberg. it's the latest financial blow for red lobster after their parent company said they were cutting ties earlier this year and last summer they had the $20. all you can eat shrimp deal that cost the chain 11 million

>> and be careful. there's a lot of mosquitoes out there. there's a new study that says san francisco has a big mosquito population, which means lots of bite. and that's not all. researchers say that the mosquitoes are coming out earlier and sticking around longer than ever before. this study was been done turman x and it ranks san francisco number 10 for having the most mosquitoes in the country. it also found areas with seasonal temperatures that higher than 55 degrees are at a higher risk of mosquito activity, especially along the coast. the number one city for the most mosquitoes is los angeles, other california cities on the list. palm springs, sacramento and san diego. i just saw my first big one last night. well, sequoia hospital in redwood city has been will just been named among the >> top 100 hospitals in the nation. that list was published this week by fortune

magazine, sequoia hospital was the only hospital in the bay area actually to make that prestigious list this year. the rankings are determined by patient outcomes and community impact. according to the study, all hospitals performed at the level of the top 100, well, an additional 350,000 lives could be saved each year and the health care system would save more than 17 billion dollars to. scripps memorial in southern california. and sutter davis hospital where only other 2 california hospitals to make the list. we're going take a break as we come upon a 27 coming up, though, we've got police still looking for the suspect who robbed a mail carrier at gunpoint in union city will have that full story.

>> emily shapiro has been a volunteer advocate for the california coalition for women prisoners for 8 years and has been visiting inmates at federal correctional institution. dublin for the past 2 years. she's concerned by the abrupt announcement, but the troubled facility is closing their way that it's happening is a bad thing. just weeks after a u.s. district judge ordered the appointment of a special master to oversee the all-women prison in the east bay federal bureau of prisons. director colette peters says the facility will be shuttered. one plagued by rampant abuse and poor living conditions. the back of opiate, the 19 that the prison is closed. >> doesn't feel like they're admitting their culpability in harming people inside. >> i feel what's happening there to me. i believe essentially trying silence and

disappear. the people who really put a lot on the line to call out the abuse abuse. is effort in a statement, peters says, quote, over the past several years at fci, dublin, the fb o p has taken unprecedented steps and provided a tremendous amount of resources to address culture, recruitment and retention aging infrastructure and most critical employee misconduct. >> despite these steps and resources, we have determined that fci, dublin is not meeting expected standards and that the best course of action is to close the facility. this decision is being made after ongoing evaluation of the effectiveness of those unprecedented steps and additional resources like silent seen in dispensing blowers and >> putting an end to the bad press surrounding the prison without actually address seen the harms. colette peters says no employees will lose their

jobs with the closure and the women currently house. there will be transferred to other facilities without providing a timeline. we're defining the closure as permanent. philippe djegal all kron. 4 news. >> okay. we have some breaking news to report as we take a live look here at sfo. the faa currently now issuing a ground stop for all alaska airlines flights. multiple sources say it's because of a problem with the computer system. upgrade. apparently this request came from alaska airlines to the faa to stop all of its main line. and so carrier flights again, if there's an issue with their computer system, that's understandable why they need to stop flights until they can get that fixed. we've got kron 4 charles clifford heading to the airport now to try to collect more information. and as soon as we gather, that will come back here with another update. stay tuned. a 34 right now in the san francisco sheriff's office has the lockdown at one of their jails is going to end today. >> 2 jails have been locked down because of a number of inmate attacks on deputies and

staff. the jail in san bruno is going to reopen later this week after 9 members of the jail staff there have been assaulted by inmates. >> in east bay, detectives in paolo have identified the body of a woman found back in september and the oakland estuary and they believe she was killef by her son in law. the body belongs to 75 year-old cute ran. police have been looking for her and her 4 year-old daughter. so ally since they both went missing in september last month, police arrested lies, husband, fuchs vo. now investigators say vo claimed the women took off in a car after an argument. but police later found that car in oakland with vo behind the wheel. investigators now believe he was involved in the deaths and disappearance of both women. police are still looking for his wife's body. meanwhile, police are investigating the body of a man that washed ashore in the berkeley marina. they found it last saturday evening. they say it is of a man in his 50's. investigators are trying to determine his

identity and cause of death will keep you updated. >> it's a 35 and somebody attacked and robbed a mail carrier at gunpoint in union city did. and police are now offering a reward as they look for the attacker cropper. sara stinson shows us what happened. >> a mail carrier assaulted and robbed at gunpoint here in union city in the middle of the afternoon. the thieves also took off with a postal key. i spoke with a postal inspector who says this could result in mail being stolen from people who live in that neighborhood where the robbery took place. this for us a very high priority investigation. another u.s. postal service mail carrier attacked on the job. this time the postal employee was assaulted and robbed at gunpoint in union city. it happened around 2 saturday afternoon on granada way off regions boulevard. union city police responded in say the mail carrier was taken to the hospital with minor injuries. postal police are

working around the clock to identify and find the attacker. usps has put out $150,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the pprson or people involved of the safety of letter carriers is our number one concern. jeff fitch is a postal inspector. he says people who live in this union city neighborhood should be on high alert if they see you know. >> 3, 4, weeks, credit card statements or bank statements where there's transaction they did not make. contact us or contact. union city police department fitch says in the last 4 years usps has seen an uptick in mail carrier robberies. it's been all over the bay area. we had robberies in san francisco. we've had properties here oakland. >> berkeley. number of different cities just last month kron 4 reported on postal worker being robbed in oakland. investigators shared this photo of the suspect who they're still searching for. there's $150,000 reward

offered in this case as well. anybody has information that any of these robberies that we publicized contact us at the 24 hour number, the 877-876-2455. >> if the person or people involved in this robbery are caught and convicted, they would face 2 felonies for allegedly stealing the postal people, but also assaulting the mail carrier that could result in up to 35 years behind bars. i'm sara stinson reporting in union city. back to you. >> it's a 37, a new this morning. the city of san jose has a new police watchdog. any aubrey is the new independent police auditor. the city council just made the decision after reports showed complaints against the police in 2023. actually went down for the first time since 2019. aubrey was head of the office of professional accountability for the richmond police before going to san jose and now this is san jose, 7th independent

police auditor was taking over on may 6th. and the san jose police department says it is increasing patrols at local places of worship. now because of the conflict between israel and hamas. there's a new report. this as antisemitic incidents have gone up by 140% since 2020 in the united states. this is video from lake merritt in oakland in december when vandals tossed a menorah into the lake. and then in march, you can see here at the walnut creek city council meeting, a man came in and with an anti-semitic rant that he made. the anti-defamation league says there have been a spike in incidents after the whole thing started on october, 7th the attack on israel and then israel's retaliation for that attack in the bombing of gaza. >> we need a whole society response to fight hate. we know there are far more allies to address this outpouring of hate and those who act to

any airport across the country that handles both alaska and horizon flights because there is a nationwide ground stop in effect right now for all alaska and horizon flights due to a problem with a software upgrade that the airline was trying to conduct this morning. now, we do have a statement from alaska airlines and it reads, quote, this morning we experienced an issue while performing an upgrade to the system that calculates our weight and balance. this is for the weight and balance of the aircraft. you need that information. if you're going to fly the plane properly. so they do the updated trying to get better and it made it kind of propaganda. okay. the statement goes on to read a ground stop for all alaska and horizon flights was instituted at approximately 7.50 this morning pacific time. so that's our time zone. we're working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible. we apologize for the inconvenience and encourage guests to check the status of their flights on the alaska air website or the alaska gpp prior to heading the airport because if they can't resolve this computer issue, yeah, he's ground delays could
