well, an open family is without a home after a lithium battery caught fire in the garage. >> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning news all. >> well, good thursday morning thank you waking up with this bright and early on the kron. 4 morning news. today's emily i'm reyna harvey. the weather has been so beautiful these past few days but have to admit jaw allergies. it does not hang in good morning yeah. all that extra and really making things grow. so probably a lot more pollen levels than a lot of us have been used to the past few this year last year, which is really bringing all that growth. >> you're look outside where we're sitting this morning at the golden gate bridge skies are relatively clear out there. we're talking another morning that is going to have mild conditions ahead of what will be a perfectly sunny and warm afternoon. in fact, more sunshine today than what we saw yesterday about of those

high clouds of yesterday. not really in the picture this afternoon. so that's going help temperatures to even become a little bit warmer for some spots. could just a touch warmer than yesterday. 40's to 50's for our current temperatures on the map as we move into the afternoon. still holding on to those low 80's inland and a lot of 70's along the bay shore and even some spots out towards the coast. i'm talking more in your forecast as we go roadways this morning are rolling along just fine. we're looking at the bay bridge here with an 8 minute crossing and definitely a nice way to get the morning started out there. san mateo bridge, your typical 13 minutes rolling at the limit. both the richmond, sandra fell and the golden gate free of any signs of anything close to a back up just yet great. all right, john, thank you for that. we start with breaking overnight news. the oakland police department now investigating a deadly shooting that involved an officer. >> shooting happened just before 9.30, last night on 16th street. the police department says the sacramento police department was oakland investigating a homicide. they

asked opd to help them arrest a suspect. opd says the suspect came from inside of a home with a gun. an officer shot and killed the person. they say no officers were injured. department says the officers involved placed on paid administrative leave as they investigate this incident. pro-palestine demonstrators. they were back in south san francisco after man attacked last week. video shows the man physically and verbally assaulted members of the group change s s f kron four's. dan thorn has that story. >> the man in that video was arrested by south san francisco police and charged with battery and hate speech. organizers for change ssf say facing that kind of vitriol was unfair and unacceptable because they're simply calling for peace and an end to the war in gaza. and they're rallies are not going to end until this war is over.

>> all i people messages targeting pro-palestinian protesters last week in south san francisco races. a 57 year-old man was caught on camera bumping hurling insults and even spitting and i don't think being anti genocide. antiwar but apparently >> educated by our messaging. change ssf and see a 15 for palestine rallied in the same spot where the incident happened wednesday evening for weeks. they've been demanding a cease-fire resolution in south city. >> out of fear of the return of any bad actors, organizers asked for children to be kept at my son does wish that he could out here with us. >> this is a very important cause along with others, even like called following last week's violence doxing. he's also been a concern for the group. >> so kron 4 was asked to not share the names of any

ralliers. but the demonstrators are also not staying silent, waving palestinian flags and getting the attention of drivers along el camino. change. ssf says they will not be deterred from their mission by men like everywhere. there's always going to be bad actors, whatever you're or whatever case you're advocating for. i think that this is a matter of human rights and >> i think if you're advocating against preservation of human life, you take a good look at yourself. >> these demonstrations were not supposed to be a weekly thing, but after last week's attack, the group says they felt compelled to carry on and they're planning on having another rally next week at the civic campus here in south san francisco in south san francisco. dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> well, google says it has fired 28 of its employees who protested at the company's offices across the county on tuesday. one of the protests

happened right outside of the google office in sunnyvale. demonstrators demanded the company cut ties with israel. police arrested 5 people, including some google employees, they say refused to leave a google spokesperson says physically impeding other employees work and preventing access to facilities. the clear violation of company policy. alameda county district attorney pamela price says her office is now working on filing charges against protesters who block 8.80 earlier this week. in a statement kron, 4 da price says her office is working with chp to process evidence and information right in part, quote, while my office supports the essential right to protest, it's important to note public safety should never be compromised and exercising the first amendment right of free speech guaranteed under the u.s. constitution. meanwhile, san francisco district attorney brooke jenkins is also reaching out to anybody might have been impacted by the

protest on the golden gate bridge saying anyone trapped on the bridge that they should contact the chp in marin. and over family would like to raise awareness about signs of a faulty battery. so this comes after a lithium battery caught fire and left them without a home. however, stinson has that story. >> suzy fetter and clark boyd described the traumatic moment when a fire started at their oakland home sunday afternoon. you're screaming for your partner about eye wall there in start. fire is says you wouldn't believe that would knew. the couple says loud pops and smoke started coming from their garage. so boyd went to check it out. >> that's when like the rest of black smoke came. and boyd says he quickly saw it was his lithium battery that caught fire setter quickly called 9-1-1. but she says she was put on hold over 6 minutes. >> and i ended having to hang so i could. >> call other people and other

neighbors were out and there are hold with 9, 1, as well that are then grabbed their 18 month-old baby and dog. her husband stayed behind to fight the fire. and got the garden hose from the backyard trying put the fire out. eventually firefighters arrived and put out the flames, a car inside the garage and the building. >> got heavily damaged. thankfully, no one got hurt, but the family and their 2 neighbors now without a home. it's just definitely overwhelming. and it's even hard to process we need to do at this time. boyd says he had a lot of flammable things in the garage. so this could have been a lot worse. we're all counting their blessings of this reflecting on the chaos of sunday. boyd wants to warn others about faulty lithium batteries. you have a problem targeting a better. do use that at all. you know, returning returning. if they have a problem that, you know your best to get your money back. and if you do, >> take that loss taking a loss on the little battered

$100 battery say a something possibly even somebody getting hurt. >> well, that was sara stinson reporting. the family says they bought that battery from a company called some pop. dow usa and before combusted. they say they contact the company about charging problems customer service was not helpful. and the north bay, a santa rosa man died yesterday afternoon after his dump truck overturned on highway. 29 in napa. police say the truck crashed into a concrete mailbox and guardrail causing the truck to overturn. they say both the driver and his passenger seatbelts. they were ejected from that vehicle. the driver of the truck died while his passenger taken to the hospital with major injuries. chp does not believe drugs alcohol played a role in the crash, but they say that investigation is ongoing. it has been one month since a family of 4 was tragically killed at a west portal bus stop last night, san francisco police have traffic safety

operation staying right in that area. officers were stationed at alloa and will right near west portal. ave so in just 90 minutes, they headed out. 22 citations and 5 warnings, assistant police chief david was our says since that accident community has and really vocal about wanting to see changes made to that area was our says as of pd agrees that with them offering up tips to pedestrians across the city. i would say for the whole city has a pedestrian walking around. you just have to be really aware of your surroundings for a lot of reasons, you know, to prevent crime, but also in terms of traffic safety. >> really making sure you're looking both ways a few times before you cross make eye contact with drivers, putting your hands up to just be seen and be safe. >> we were there. the driver received a citation or failing to yield to a pedestrian. she wasn't too happy with the way police were conducting wednesday's operation. she did say there's a lot going on the intersection and it could use improvement like maybe a nat stop sign or clear crosswalk.

3 people now facing charges in connection to the shooting deaths of 2 teens in napa. 22 year-old john nicholson, junior, 2 teen girls were arrested for the saturday night shooting. investigators say nicholson plant not guilty. several charges, including murder. they say the 2 girls arrested from santa rosa were in the car with him during that shooting and they could face charges as accomplices. still ahead, the proper morning news. >> after o j simpson's passing one question still remains. well, ron goldman and nicole simpson collect any money owed to their families. and say it was just a health. officials are working to bring child health care clinics to those who are not used to navigating them. we'll hear from a resident who has been attending the clinics for years. and today is the 100 and 18th annual remembrance of

>> well, a man from the east bay was charged vehicular manslaughter, all connection to a hit and run crash that killed a pedestrian in oakland in 2022. prosecutors say they believe jose perez was driving a stolen car when he hit a woman and did not stop to call for help. well, was a police say a 14 year-old stocks for setting this driverless car on

fire in chinatown. we crowd roughy the waymo car broke a window through fireworks in the car which lift the car fire. speaking of driverless cars, a new bill brought to the state senate looks to further regulate driverless cars if it's passed, that bill would allow police to to get the cars and will let communities keep them out of the area of concern. and all of the police are investigating graffiti at killingsworth junior high school. the threat this will shooting what happened today. so the department says there are no known credible threats to the school or staff and they're working with school staff on that investigation right now. all right. let's get to that forecast. one of the highlights for today, john. it is supposed to yet another nice one morning. >> yeah, very warm out there yet again today. just as warm as yesterday. so that means some low 80's inland and some 70's along the bay shore. after this. we're going to be in for a bit of a cool down, not much but if you really enjoy that warmth is for you. you look outside mount tam

right now is showing crystal clear conditions. in fact, less cloud cover across the bay than what we had yesterday. high pressure. ridge has been the predominate force of this forecast lately, but about to be nudged out by a cut off low, that places itself right across the region into early next week. and that is going to be the first signs of a bit of a pattern change towards the very end of next week. really? no rainfall in the immediate forecast just yet, but we are going to be backing off the heat slowly but surely of the next few days. you can see in future cast here. a little bit of cloud cover this morning. but less of it going on into the afternoon as we move into tomorrow. we are going to be seeing temperatures down in the mid 70's at the warmest still very, very comfortable. just not as warm as both yesterday and today are about to the now temperatures since the city back up into the mid mid 60's to low 70's daly city at 67, half moon bay at 66 today. well, looking at 70's pretty consistently for most of the rest of us, a few

spots, notably the south bay. all right, back into those low 80's this afternoon with san jose. 82 degrees livermore. kudos to the 80's at 79 degrees today. danville up to concord. you'll actually get up to 80 while oakland up to richmond at 74. also a few more low 80's out into solano county. look ahead shows tomorrow's temperatures down into the mid 70's same into saturday, sunday and monday of next week. briefly back in the upper 70's before we drop into the 60's at the warmest by tuesday and wednesday of next week with some partly cloudy skies. as for your roads, things out there are doing just fine this bay bridge, easy and early. if you are getting out there early risers, always get a bit of an easier commute. at least most of the time. san mateo bridge, 13 minutes. get you across both. the richmond, sandra fell and the golden gate also holding up just fine for early risers. all right, john, thank you for that. >> so over the last 20 years, you've got health officials

catherine e talk with a bay area civil trial attorney about that matter. it doesn't fit. you must acquit. >> about a year after o j. simpson's 1995. acquittal on murder charges. he was back in court facing civil charges. only a small fraction of the 33 and a half million dollars. he was eventually ordered to pay out after that trial was reportedly ever delivered and attorney for the family of ron goldman says with interest, the amount is now 114 million. so to the families have a better chance now of collecting a bay area. civil trial attorney says it depends on how much of simpson's assets are successfully found or marshaled always what's actually going to be marshall. >> you can hide in a mansion. you can hide a boat. can my core you can hide money, you can jewelry. we talked earlier. you can put some jewelry and a cough canterbury

>> welcome back to the kron. 4 morning news are almost in channel 5.30, here. hey, last few days have been beautiful. john, i think you say in the next few days we're in for a treat. >> haha, i mean, it has just been consistently so nice lately. it's been a lot of treats and we're getting spoiled now. we're looking out there at the east bay hills right here. skies, nice and clear. we're not seeing as much high cloud cover today either. so skies even a little bit. you are today. now today is going to be the last of our low, 80 degree days. tomorrow is going to be mid 70's, which

honestly sounds just as nice if not even a little bit better. i was getting a few tax yesterday from people saying, oh, my gosh, today's actually warm like this. maybe a little too warm for some of us. but yeah, we kind of settle back into those 70's after today. 40's to 50's for our current temperatures petaluma and santa rosa at 47 berkeley at 51, oakland and alameda sitting at 54 degrees as we move into the afternoon today, those low 80's for just one more day. as i mentioned, we do see a subtle cool down for the rest of the forecast, which i got the details on. still to come, as for your roads, things out there are doing ok this morning. it is still early. no need for the metering lights just the bay bridge, nor looking at any backups on any of our other spans. so right now anticipate rolling at the limit. definitely a nice day to be an early riser and getting out there on the roads. great. all right, john, thank you for that. we continue to follow breaking news from overnight. >> the oakland police department now investigating a deadly shooting that involved an officer. shooting happened

just before 9.30, last night on 16th street. police department says the sacramento police department, they were in oakland investigating a homicide. well, they asked opd to help them arrest a suspect. opd says the suspect came from inside of a home with a gun and officers shot and killed that person. they said officers were injured. the department says the officers involved are now placed on paid administrative leave as they investigate this incident. time now, 5.30, and the city of san francisco is holding a ceremony to remember 118 years since that devastating 19. 0, 6, earthquake. this is footage from the big one. more than 3,000 people lost their lives. more than 200,000 people were left without homes. michael thomas is live in san francisco as the city continues to remember the morning, michael. >> good morning, everyone. this is now nearly 120 years later and the city of san

francisco along with its residents and officials continue to remember those who lost their lives back in 19. 0, 6, during the san francisco earthquake and fire known as the big one. and take a look. this is a lot of spouting right here. you can they've done that annual wreath laying it's raining, mentioned for the 118 year this ceremony. and you can we've got lots of people out here. i would say close to maybe 100 to 150 and as she said, this year marks 118 years and officials began honoring the anniversary at around 4.45. this morning with annual wreath laying here at the lot of stuff near market street in downtown this year's week laying was being dedicated to the memory of senator dianne feinstein and san francisco flores. and then also a lot of stone wreath maker larry, through this. now, of over the years, this been a tradition this year about 3 months ago. they did put in a plaque near market street that gives all the details of that 19. 0, 6, san

score staff and they're working with school staff on that investigation. and some parents in the east bay chose to pick up their students early from school yesterday morning after 5 school districts received bomb threats. officials say the threat email claimed a bomb would go off yesterday afternoon unless russian prisoners were released from us jails. ultimately the threat was found not to be credible. one superintendent said the threat was also sent to schools across the state. time alameda police are investigating a swatting incident and instill junior and senior high school. this happened just before one yesterday afternoon when the police department received a call reporting a hostage situation at the school. police say they responded to school and they searched the campus. they did not find anything suspicious. a warning about a trendy now on social media could have dire consequences in marin county deputies recently followed up concerned citizens report

about a kid running to the neighbor who was a gun kron four's terisa stasio report the teen admitted to playing a game called senior assassins. yeah, just call that the assassin challenge. kron. 4 news obtained the snapshots from a deputy's body worn camera of replica gun. >> recovered by marin county sheriffs on tuesday. a spokesperson says the deputies pulled over the team with friends after an uber driver have reported seeing what he thought was a teen running through a neighborhood holding a real weapon, according to their was something that they knew could be riskier. people could be concerned about. >> so they're trying to be smart about but running through residential neighborhoods and adding by is not really smart way to go about doing that. >> that's marin county deputy adam schumer horn. he says that the high school student told deputies recently purchased the fagan online to participate in the senior assassins game. we're seniors

teams and eliminate each other by tagging competitors with water, guns. >> although kids want to have fun that they want to do silly pranks to do things like that, that many of us that senior of our own this is something that definitely has some serious ramifications. >> last month after a teen was cited on a marine bike path with another fagan principles that marin county high school sent out emails to parents warning them about the game. and consequences of getting caught. redwood high school doctor payne sent this out, quote, school consequences for participation in this game may include loss of privileges such as prom graduation ceremonies, athletics and other activities, end quote. martin county sheriff's office put on their social media site. the circumstances surrounding the teen and the realistic looking gun has a message for all. >> my hope is that parents will see this and conversations with their be cognizant about the types items that they're leaving the

house with for the 3 and purchasing in marin county, theresa kron. 4 news. >> francisco police say a 14 year-old was charged with setting this driverless car on fire. out of that in february in chinatown, police say a crowd graffiti, the waymo car broke a window through fireworks in the college lit the fire. thankfully nobody was inside and no injuries were reported. and there's a new bill brought to the state senate looking to further regulate driverless cars. the bill aligns driverless vehicle restrictions with those of human driven vehicles. that means local police can ticket the cars that communities could keep them out of areas of concern. driverless cars will also be subject to the same guy and the requirements as any other vehicle. the bill had its first hearing yesterday. it could be a month or more until it hits the governor's desk. more layoffs

and google spokesperson for the mountain view based company toy rotors, reuters that the layoffs are part of an effort to cut costs. still no word on the number of employees being let go slay's round of layoffs follows job cuts made earlier this year where the company laid off about 1000 employees. someone vandalized the historic street landslide, a lake merritt in oakland. they've been different ever. >> take a look at this city officials say 40 kerr boxes were broken into 10 light poles are down from a combination of fallen trees and then a listen. city workers are having replaced liars and install temporary light poles, a permanent replacements are being fabricated. residents say the now scared to come out tonight. >> is like safe like going to feel safe? got this makes like. >> well, the city estimates they've repaired about 25% of damage so far. but they say

they're finding a lot more damage and stolen wire as they make the repairs. and the south bay, a newly released audit of the san jose police department shows more than 360 complaints made against officers in 2023, nearly 250 those complaints involve police misconduct. the one complaint an officer was accused of using excessive force during an arrest when asked by the suspect why he was being detained. the officer replied, quote, we just decide to stop a black man for no reason. okay in quote. a review of that incident found that the officers use of force was within police policy. but that additional training was needed to avoid baez based policing and 2 other cases, citizens complained that during a traffic stop and officer asked, quote, other any dead babies in the car in, quote. upon further investigation. one officer said this was an example of chalk talk meant to catch a listener off guard and

thereby cause a greater likelihood of the listener speaking the truth audit recommends that the department strongly discourage such tactics. california attorney general bonta set to hold a press conference this morning in oakland to talk about the efforts in solving california's ongoing housing crisis. honda plans to speak at 9.30 this morning and also is going. here's some concerns from residents of the fayetteville transit village after that conference, bonds and plans to do a hard hat or want those village a planned cultural hub for community entrepreneurship and local businesses. californians for safe communities coalition, they're going to make an announcement this morning. all in regards 2 signature collections for the homeless drug addiction and that production act. the press conference is set for 10, 30 this morning. that's at 6.19, market street in san francisco. small business owners, social justice leaders and families of victims packed
