kron. 4 morning news. police are looking for the person who killed a woman. she was shot downtown san jose. tensions are rising on college campuses across the country and here in the bay area over the war in gaza will take you to uc berkeley and we're going to take it to sacramento where the oakland a's are. now. they're big fans are protesting because these are going to get to play there before they moved vegas. >> from the local news station, you're watching you on morning team. >> good morning. and happy monday to you happens every week. and here we are again at 10 o'clock. but it's sunny and gorgeous. and we're in for a great week and may starts this this week. dave. oh, yes, that's right. for this week ahead. okay. door ahead. good morning, everybody. i thought

berkeley as we get closer to graduation. the question is how are they going? we know there's been a camp and they're now we're in the second week. kron four's will tran is live on campus with a look at what's going on. will. >> there are students moving about and they're going to the classrooms, hoping to learn. and then there are students on campus. literally they don't leave campus. they're hoping to teach the university a few things, including what's going on. of course, between israel and palestine. you can see the tents right behind me. this is at sproul hall. this is just one sliver. let me show you the other sections of this being called an encampment. there are dozens of tense at this location and they have a huge banner hanging at sproul hall listing their demands. >> another one of the demands that the university at this location at mit, they say what's going on in palestine.

israel is genocide. so they want uc berkeley's to admit that. and they also want uc berkeley to not invest in companies that work with israel as specially making weapons of war. so this is going to go on until they get their demands. met. in the meantime, a lot of them are here, but none of them want to speak on camera given the many opportunities to go on camera talk to us to their side verbally and they all they said to me was we have a batter. it speaks for us. meanwhile, so many people are walking by heading to the classrooms with no chaos. i mention that because universities across the country and of course, including here at berkeley and across the bay area at stanford, they are watching this very closely. they want the students to have free speech as well as 2 the free thinkers. but of course, they don't want chaos to a rapt. and so far it looks like uc berkeley and has been peaceful. back to you. all

right. thanks a lot. we'll and as we'll mention, protests have been going on all around the country. some want to take a look at some of the video. >> from other protests at other universities and see how they've been handled. our dc correspondent hannah brandt has more. >> so it's a great american value to to protest, but i don't believe living in a pup tent us is really helpful on the hill sunday. senator john fetterman raised concerns about the protests and on nbc's meet the press. senator mitch mcconnell called the situation dangerous. there's also anti-semitism. >> just completely unacceptable. many students are demanding their universities cut ties with israel and senator bernie sanders told cnn the raising legitimate concerns about the death toll palestinians and the humanitarian crisis in gaza. when you make those charges, that is not semitic. >> that is a reality on fox news. senator chris murphy said he supports students demonstrating peacefully. 95% of the young people who are on

these campuses are there because they believe there's a fundamental injustice being perpetrated. senator jd vance as well. students do have a right to protest. do not have the right to set up tent cities on our public spaces in turn our cities in the garbage dumps, that that is what i think we should not allow some college campuses have use law enforcement to break up the protests and hundreds have been arrested. but senator tim kaine warned against escalating the response. the national guard going to college campuses, kent state and elsewhere did not end well. >> and i think that would be a very, very bad idea. some of the protests threaten to disrupt the upcoming graduation ceremonies scheduled at many of the college campuses with at least one already canceled in washington. i'm hannah brandt. >> 10, 0, 5, is the time. and a woman was shot and killed near downtown san jose. and now police are looking for who did this happen in the area of north 4th and east saint james streets. it was friday night around 09:00pm and her body was found in the street. the

shooter got away. neighbors just heard the gunshots and they called the police. by the time the officers got there, it was about 6 o'clock in the morning on saturday. this is the city's 12th homicide of the year. >> want to give you an update to a story we first told you about last tuesday where one of our tv crews was interviewing san jose's mayor in downtown and this man ran up wound up in a physical altercation with the police officer who was assigned to protect the mayor and what happened was is 35 year-old name wesley pollard ended up being arrested for confronting. and finally, actually physically and hitting the security guard. as you can see here he they say, became confrontational and ended up attacking the officer. but the san jose silicon valley naacp released a statement from their view about what happened and they say, quote, the officer involved in the altercation did not clearly identify himself as a law enforcement

officer. and it appears that there was no legal basis for instructing the pedestrian to move from his location in a public space. the pedestrians reaction should have been met with a more measured response from the officer considering the circumstances and quote. >> oakland >> a's fans went to sacramento to chant sell the team. they are upset that the a's are going to be able to play in sacramento while they wait for their ballpark in las vegas to be built. and here's one of them talking about it. >> i mean, sacramento kings fans field. if if if another owner came about and say, hey, we'll let you play here for free. i mean, that's what he's doing. like, yeah, you might be moving. john fisher is the 3 years. but you're also moving in the summer of sell the summer boycott. these fans are passionate and you think we're just going to go away because? it's an hour and a half away. >> help they're going to keep sacramento in protesting what plan to do in the north bay

after 27 years in business and iconic candy store on main street into braun is closing. the owner talked to kron 4 sarah stinson. >> after nearly 3 decades of providing sweet treats the candy store on main street in tehran is closing. the store was packed with people sunday trying to get their favorite candies one last time. iran is not to run without this candy it's a destination for the kids to come downtown and get candy. this is kind of sad to see that like a childhood memories going away. the shop is a sweet childhood memory for the owner to cam heartbroken. i really am i you this is been half of my life 16 years. jenny torres grew up in temple run and work to the candy store in high school in 2015 when the original owners wanted to sell, she left her job as a teacher and bought it at just 24 years old. i close up that night and i was a business tourists. as in the

last 9 years, she's experienced the ups and downs of running a business in a seasonal tourist town. during the pandemic. you know, i moved heaven and earth to to stay here keep profitable and keep paying the rent. miss a mint. torres says she was trying to renew her lease on main street. but when her landlord hiked the re 60%, she says she made the difficult decision to close. once. i realize that they weren't really willing to negotiate. i haven't had a broken talk to them. then i realized that it was just going i was suarez says this has other small businesses on main worried about being pushed out to their nervous having one in the street east, such a high rate would cause their regular rate skyrocket. you know, as word got out about the closure, the support came flooding in from the community. a lot of people came and asked me what i needed, what i wanted. people offer to invest. people offer you know, pay the rent. a gofundme page was set up to save the candy shop. it's raised more than $6,000.

tourists hopes one day she can open up the shop in a new location. but for now, it's farewell. was many of it has been coming to say goodbye to the candy store. look at that smile. i we going take away the smiles. torres is hoping to keep this sweet tradition alive by opening up another candy store somewhere else in town. >> with a different landlord, we reached out to her current landlord, but we did not hear back in time for this report. >> i'm sara stinson reporting in timber kron. 4 news. >> asia sf has officially close to. the nightclub was known for hosting dinner cabaret performances for transgender dancers and they've been around for 26 years in the south of market neighborhood in san francisco. the owner is hoping that there will be able to keep doing pop-up performances to keep the legacy of asia sf going. >> in oakland, the restaurant horn barbecue is officially back open after it suffered a devastating fire and look at

this flight actually, it started sacramento and they were headed to denver when they had to land yesterday in san francisco, it was a boeing 7.37. in all those say is there were mechanical issues or a mechanical issue, but they didn't say what they said. the pilot didn't have to make an emergency landing. they just landed there safely 160 people. they got him off the plane and put them on to another aircraft and they made it to denver about 2 hours later. in san francisco, a man is sentenced to 10 years in prison for trying to hire an undercover fbi agent to murder his ex-wife. allen gessen was in a years long legal battle with his ex-wife for custody of their 2 children. investigators say his original plan involved bribing immigration agents to deport his acts to her home country and then they say he plotted to kill her in twenty-twenty to the fbi says that guests and met with one of their undercover agents and wired

about $23,000 to one of the agency's bank accounts. new this morning, a fire broke out in multiple storage units and fremont. it happened earlier this morning at extra space storage on fremont boulevard. nobody was hurt. firefighters quickly put out a lot of damage there. and you can see a lot of people store the stuff in there. so that stuff is all ruined as well. 10. 21 is the time right now. alameda county taxpayers are going to see a sales tax increase to help fund children. childcare. it's called measure c and it is a half a cent sales tax that is going to be in effect for 20 years because voters passed this in 2020, but it never took effect till now because it was challenged by alameda county taxpayers association, the california supreme court, however, has upheld the measure that just happened. so now this money is going to be divided into 2 accounts. 20% is devoted to pediatric health care and then

>> it's 10. 25 and police arrested 2 minors for carjacking and robbing a person and the the victim was sitting in their car near holiday street and cassidy street on tuesday night when a man walked up with a weapon and was able to drive off with the dodge avenger. that vehicle was spotted 2 days later and officers noticed it was stolen car. so they tried to pull it over. a chase ensued in berkeley and the driver ended up crashing into another vehicle. then 2 people got out of the car, made a run for. they went across the highway and police were able to arrest them. it turns out they were teens 10. 26 is the time and happening now, santa clara county fire crews are clearing vegetation along multiple roads. the doing this work in los altos hills. and

>> over 500 teams of students from around 144 different schools from the bay area. and northern california joined together here downtown san jose for the 37th annual tech challenged. but the tech projects they're working go back months. >> time means the end of the school year. but for these kids. >> really, fun. >> challenging the 37th annual tech challenge in downtown san jose. well, months in the making doesn't feel like your usual homework assignment. this is really an opportunity from students all over california to showcase their amazing engineers feel i belong core helps protect challenge on every single year. this is her 11th and she says every year is a different theme. this year's theme is space. >> she adds that every year is special. they started as early as october. >> at the end of the project, they come here to showcase everything they've built for long court. it's a pivotal moment for kids anywhere from 4th grade to senior year round for me. i really love to see

was space, but organizers are dropping back next year's theme could be something that has to grab it's, quote, gravity is your friend. we're in downtown san jose. jack moment. kron 4 news. >> at my age gravity that my friend? it is 10. 33 right now. and police have arrested. a homeless man is accused of attacking piedmont's police chief when the chief went for this arrest was a situation that happened at an ace hardware on grand avenue in piedmont. that's where was reported that an elderly man had been hit by someone. and so when police showed up, the suspect was identified as willie gomer. he ran next door and police tried to apprehend him. but they say that he attacked officers, cities, pepper spray and they tased him. but then he got away and broke into a home and threatened to residents there. then he came outside on that house and he was confronted by piedmont's police chief jeremy bowers. well, he managed to

get into the chiefs police cruiser and the chief ran around to the other side of the car. and that is when gomer allegedly attacked the chiefs. they took him into custody and faces several charges on the peninsula. san mateo deputies arrested a man for a taking a child the same day that she was reported kidnapped, a woman approached them outside of police headquarters in north fair oaks saturday afternoon saying that her 4 year-old daughter had been taken by the child's father. the his car was spotted driving down el camino real and he was taken into custody. the child was returned unharmed. it appears indications are the supreme court may rule in favor of cities in case of whether to allow punishments for unhoused people who are sleeping outside when there are shelters at full capacity and here in the bay area, san francisco has said that they've been blocked from enforcing camping regulations because the city does not have enough shelter space for the
