across college campuses calling for a cease-fire for the war in gaza. what happened when students at columbia to find a deadline to get out? and a storage unit goes up in flames in the east bay. we're live there with details. >> from the bay station. you're watching kron. news. >> thank you for joining us here on kron. 4 news at noon. i'm justine waldman. we're going to start with that fire at that east bay storage unit. at that east bay storage unit. smoke could be seen for miles us now live from fremont with details. how are things looking this afternoon? charles? >> well, good afternoon. the good news here is this fire under control and no one was injured. but the cleanup is probably going to continue throughout the day. around 6 monday morning. the fremont fire department responded here to extra space storage in the 30,000 block of fremont boulevard on reports of a fire crews arriving on scene found

this 2 story building composed of storage and it's fully engulfed in flames. it took crews about an hour using water and foam to bring the fire under control. >> adding to the challenge of fighting this blaze is the unknown nature of what was in the storage units in a storage facility. typically people. >> pack them full of whatever the contents were unaware of what those contents are, but they're usually packed fully so. >> you have a heavy fire load so that that always what is going to create different fire conditions for us, even though the fire was contained quickly, fire crews plan to be on scene for most of the day monday, just in case the flames kick back up again. there's still that deep-seated smoldering fire beneath that just. >> makes it a challenge for for getting in there and getting to the scene of the fire. fire crews were able to keep this fire from spreading 2 other buildings. >> all right, back live now, the exact cause of this fire, that remains under investigation. also the washington shopping center here which was blocked off. i has now reopened for folks who want to come in here. but for now in fremont, charles

clifford kron, 4 news. charles, thank you. >> number cars were set on fire across san francisco's tenderloin district. fire crews say 4 cars caught on fire around 5 yesterday. morning video now from the citizens app showing the area near van ness at hickory and rose street. chris are saying the other fires happened on jones and eddie in the area of hate and octavia and market street. no one was hurt. the cause of the fires are under investigation. police are still looking for the suspect who shot and killed a woman. this happened the area of north 4th at east saint james streets friday night around 9 in san jose. police say the victim was found in the street. they say that the shooter ran away from the scene. neighbors in the area tell us they heard multiple gunshots and that it sounded like firecrackers. this now becomes the city's 12th homicide of the year. another united flight had to be diverted to sfo because of a mechanical issue that flight heading from sacramento to denver yesterday when it had

to land here at sfo with this live picture, we're checking out what's happening at the airport now. that aircraft was a boeing 7.37, it's unclear what that mechanical issue was. but we're told that the pilots did not have to make an emergency landing. the 160 people on board were then transferred to a different aircraft and they made it to denver about 2 hours later. some developing news now. a student protests are continuing at u c berkeley as many of them are rallying for a ceasefire in gaza. the protests now entering its second week. kron four's will tran has more. >> there are students moving about and they're going to the classrooms, hoping to learn. and then there are students on campus. literally they don't leave campus. they're hoping to teach the university a few things, including what's going on, of course, between israel and palestine. you can see the tents right behind me. this is at sproul hall. this is just one sliver. let me show you the other sections of this

being called an encampment. there are dozens of tense at this location and they have a huge banner hanging at sproul hall listing their demands. another one of the demands that the university at this location at mit. >> they say what's going on in palestine. israel is genocide said they want uc berkeley's to admit that. and they also want uc berkeley to not invest in companies that work with israel as specially making weapons of war. so this is going to go on until they get their demands. met. in the meantime, a lot of them are here, but none of them want to speak on camera given the many opportunities to go on camera to talk to us to their side verbally and they all they said to me was we have a batter. it speaks for us. meanwhile, so many people are walking by heading to the classrooms with no chaos. i mentioned that because universities across the

country and of course, including here at berkeley and across the bay area at stanford, they are watching this very closely. they want the students to have free speech as well as 2 the free thinkers. but of course, they don't want chaos to erupt. and so far it looks like a uc berkeley and has been peaceful. similar protests are happening on college campuses all across the country. many students are demanding that the universities. >> cut ties with israel. some college campuses have asked police to break up the protests. hundreds have already been arrested and these protests and encampments could disrupt upcoming graduation ceremonies happening at a lot of colleges. usc has already canceled its main graduation ceremony and columbia activists have now defied a deadline to clear out a tent encampment. instead, more than 300 demonstrators were seen chanting, clapping and drumming, at least 120 tents are still up right now. video

showing us these pro-palestinian protesters taking a vote to disregard this dispersal order. the school set a deadline of about one hour ago. 2 o'clock eastern for all these kids to leave and also to sign a form to go by university policies through june of 2025. or graduation, whichever comes first for them. the notice sent a protester said if they did, they could finish the master thit semester in good standing. if they did not, they would be suspended so far no officials appear to have entered the watching this closely. we'll keep you updated right here on kron 4 this afternoon. local businesses are taking a hit as the sausalito ferry now remains closed for commuters. these closures are now in their second week afternoon. expect inspection found one of the pier pilings was damaged. a ferry spokesperson said they can only work during low tide. so repairs are going to take some time. people living in sausalito say this is just a

big loss. just not just for the town, but for anyone who's trying to come visit. i think everybody's businesses affected. >> 15 or more per cent. people that visit san francisco, one of the things they have to do while they're in san francisco's take a ferry boat to sausalito and spend the day here in the in the magic kingdom. and that's what this is. >> the golden gate ferry hopes to have the sausalito serv ce back up and running sometime next week. while repairs are being made, a transit bus will take passengers across the golden gate bridge. saturday marked one year since banko brown was killed outside of a walgreens in san francisco. here is that security video from last april morning here. this private security guard involved here claims that brown was shoplifting during their fights. michael earl wayne anthony shot brown as he tried to leave the business a

second time. the district attorney's office did not try anthony because he argued that he had acted in self-defense, claiming that brown threatened to stab him. brown was later found to be unarmed. walgreens, the guard and the company that employed the guard were all fined. brown, a black transgender man was unhoused of the time in a voeunteer organizer for the youth woman's freedom center issued a statement saturday writing in part, quote, bancos lifeless worth so much more than what it was taken for in the face of adversity. he was resilient and courageous. he fearlessly fought for the rights and dignity of trans people. a celebration of life is being planned for a glide co-founder. the reverend cecil williams. he died last monday at the age of 94. he was also a civil rights and lgbtq activists, glide announcing on social media that the celebration of life will be held on sunday. may 12th at one of the afternoon at the glide church on ellis street.

and here we take a live look outside a wide view here so we can see what's it looks like from our mount tam cam, sunny skies to start our week. meteorologist kyla grogan here now with details. that was pleasant today. just wake up full sun. yeah, beautiful, right? not a whole lot in the way of clouds along the coast. maybe a few, but that's about it. we've got blue skies here quite hours. you can see. >> and you might notice a little bit of a breeze. we're going to see that pick up as we get into our afternoon, particularly along the coast and at some of our peaks. but right now, just beautiful blue skies. as we zoom out here, you see that we do have some low pressure to the north of us. that's bringing some rain to the pacific northwest right now we're being protected by high pressure and not only today, but over the next few days. we're going to see temperatures actually start to warm up right now. you can see at 63 in downtown san francisco are already at 69 in antioch and santa rosa about 66 in san jose. but some really nice temperatures out there. obviously we're going to be kind of at or above average today. so this is where we would normally be to

those inland spots, kind of those low to mid 70's. and that's about what we're going to see today looking at 60's in san francisco to oakland, but 70's elsewhere should be just a absolutely beautiful kind of pitch. perfect day to day. i mentioned we're going get a little bit breezy as we get into the afternoon. you can already see out of the coast point raise showing the 30 mile per hour wind 18 out francisco in this onshore flow. this direction coming from the ocean into the land. that's what we're going to see today and tomorrow. and that onshore flow will certainly keep the coast cooler. and we'll certainly keep it gusty. in fact, we're going to see some boating conditions that are not very great for those who might be on the water but i did mention a warm-up. i'll be back with your seven-day forecast. we'll talk a little bit more about that. all right. >> happening right now, new temporary housing is coming to san jose county supervisor. cindy chavez is unveiling this project that the salvation army emanuel house, the campus will be getting a complete makeover into temporary houses. a recent counts of unhoused individuals in napa county show significant

progress being made in addressing homelessness. the findings highlight a decline in the overall count of individuals experiencing homelessness, homelessness stemming from increased housing, focus services and strategic investments. according to this preliminary data, there has been an 18% decrease. the overall count of individuals experiencing homelessness between january 2023. in january this year. this is below pre-pandemic levels. the number of individual sleeping in shelters has gone up by 34% the number of individual sleeping outside of a shelter declined by 42%. the number of individuals experiencing first-time homelessness have seen a quote, concerning increase. coming up. here are some new rules and changes coming to the frozen chicken in grocery stores will explain in grocery stores will explain in for your health.

>> in the north bay after 27 years in business, the iconic candy store on main street in tipton is now closing. the owner says a major rent hike is forcing her to close up shop kron four's. sara stinson spoke with customers and the owner about what this is going mean for that little town. >> after nearly 3 decades of providing sweet treats the candy store on main street in tehran is closing. the store was packed with people sunday trying to get their favorite candies one last time. iran is not to run without this candy it's a destination for thes kids to come downtown and get candy. this is kind of sad to see that like a childhood memories going away. the shop is a sweet childhood memory

for the owner to cam heartbroken. and i really am i you this is been half of my life 16 years. jenny torres grew up in temple run and work to the candy store in high school in 2015 when the original owners wanted to sell, she left her job as a teacher and bought it at just 24 years old. i close up that night and i was a business tourists. as in the last 9 years, she's experienced the ups and downs of running a business in a seasonal tourist town during the pandemic. you know, i moved heaven and earth to to stay here keep profitable and keep paying the rent. i never miss a mint. torres says she was trying to renew her lease on main street. but when her landlord hiked the rent 60%, she says she made the difficult decision to close. once. i realize that they weren't really willing to negotiate. i haven't had a broken talk to them. then i realized that it was just going i was suarez says this has other small businesses on main worried

about being pushed out to their nervous having one in the street, the such a high rate would cause their regular rate skyrocket. you know, as word got out about the closure, the support came flooding in from the community. a lot of people came and asked me what i needed, what i wanted. people offer to invest. people offer you know, pay the rent. a gofundme page was set up to save the candy shop. it's raised more than $6,000. tourists hopes one day she can open up the shop in a new location. but for now, it's farewell. and so many of it has been coming to say goodbye to the candy look at that smile. i we're going to take away the smiles. torres is hoping to keep this sweet tradition alive by opening up another candy store somewhere else in town. >> with a different landlord, we reached out to her current landlord, but we did not hear back in time for this report. >> i'm sara stinson reporting in timber kron. 4 news. taking a live look outside right now. you can see what it looks like

here in the embarcadero in san francisco, pitiful sunny. >> day, what a way to start the week. meteorologist kyla grogan here now with details and hoping things will start to warm up a little bit. yeah. have a lovely week above average temperatures on the way. it's not because we don't have some low pressure out here that could cool us down and even potentially bring moisture. >> but it is because we've got high pressure right now at least that's protecting us from that. so that's why we see the sunshine today. that's why we're going to see a warm-up over the next few days. current temperatures right now you can see 50's still in san francisco, but everyone with the exception of half moon bay already off to the races into the 60's. in fact, we're at 69 degrees in santa rosa. 68 in concord's are already getting up there. notice that you do see the flag is flying here. the golden gate bridge, an indication that we are going to some of that on shore flow today getting quite breezy out at the coast. but as far as temperatures are concerned, you can see compared to yesterday, which was a pretty nice right? at least around the bay. we are running a little bit warmer. and again, that warming trend will really kick in and peak as we get

into wednesday, thursday and friday of this week. so i'm taking livermore as an example here. we're looking at the east bay. we can see those beautiful blue skies average high livermore about 72 degrees today. we're looking at for 74 about the same story on tuesday. but look what happens your wednesday per se friday, the kind of go roaring up to some really warm temperatures. and then you notice saturday, we come flying down very quickly as we move into that saturday sunday time frame. so what's going on high pressure is going to protect us and you can see it keeps us almost cloud-free over the next few days. but heading into friday, you notice in the evening. so those clouds rolling in and there's even a very slight chance of a shower coming in saturday night into sunday. now, it is very slight. but regardless of whether or not we get any precipitation out of this, we're certainly could see those temperatures knocked back. i was interesting. i was looking at the 6 to 10 day precipitation outlook. this takes us to may 4th through 8th maybe gives on wednesday. so obviously, you know, it's next weekend. you can see that we do have just a slightly above chance for some rain as we start may. so that means

that we've got a gorgeous week ahead of us. we've got a lovely, warm up, particularly wednesday, thursday into friday. and we're going to cool down, right as we head to the weekend. i did put that chance of a shower overnight saturday into sunday. right now. models are not incredibly bullish on this, but we'll keep an eye on it. but as i mentioned, regardless, it is going to knock those temperatures way down below average for a couple days. back to you. thank you. in the south bay for 37 years, thousands of students around northern california come to downtown san jose to show off their engineering skills. it's called the tech challenge. >> and this year's event brought in 2000 students to go to this competition. kron four's jack molmud was there and has the story. >> over 500 teams of students from around 144 different schools from the bay area and northern california joined together here downtown san jose for 37th annual tech challenge. but the tech projects they're working go back months.

confirms president joe biden spoke this weekend to israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu reaffirming the us's commitment to israel's security. >> that call coming ahead of a visit to the region by secretary of state antony blinken. washington correspondent trevor shirley is in dc with more. secretary blinken is in the middle east right now as those negotiations continue. >> quickest way. to bring this to an end. is to get to a cease-fire and the release of hostages. those are the top priorities for u.s.. secretary of state antony blinken back in the middle east as the israel-hamas war shows no signs of letting up. we strongly support israel its effort to ensure that what

happened october 7th. >> never happens again. but at the same time. we are determined to do everything we can to bring an end to the terrible human suffering that we're seeing every single day in gaza. but striking that balance remains elusive for the u.s. and middle east partners who say they remain committed to negotiations in this moment. the only thing. >> standing between the people of gaza ceasefire is hamas. they have to decide. and they have to decide quickly threatening progress, though, the possibility that israel could expand its operations into rafah against us wishes. we've said clearly in for some time on on rafah that. in the absence of plan to ensure civilians will not i will not be harmed. we can support of mileage a major military operation. and ralph we have not yet seen a plan that gives us confidence that civilians can be effectively protected.

the ad intended to help the country gained back some ground. they lost over the past few months. the san jose police officers association is defending the actions of mayor matt mahan security detail who was attacked while the mayor was providing an interview to kron 4. 35 year old wesley pollard has now been charged for attacking the mayor's security detail last tuesday. pollard stopped and confronted the mayor and his staff when the security detail asked him to move. they say pollard became confrontational in was seen there hitting the security detail. and in response to this altercation, the naacp blamed the officers lack of de-escalation for this. and now the san jose police officers association released a statement it reads in part some such as reverend more from the double a cp as well as others apologists for career criminals. immediately rushed to defend this violent, aggressive and dangerous suspect. mister moore wrote a

very disingenuous fact lus letter that was so chock full of untruths that we wonder if you actually watch the full length video wesley david pollard's assault on a member of mayor mahan security detail and the poe is calling now for a larger security presence for the mayor saying there should always be at least 2 police officers from the san jose police department assigned to him. now it appears the supreme court may rule in favor of cities in the case on whether to allow punishments for unhoused people sleeping outside when shelters are full capacity here in the bay area. san francisco officials say they have been blocked from enforcing camping regulations because the city does not have enough shelter space for its homeless population. california's lieutenant governor has been paying close attention. 2 hearings going on in this case. does it appear as though the court is going to side with the cities? >> and when they make this decision, if it goes that way, that ability to clear

encampments when necessary by the city's he's probably going to be restored. >> so a decision on this case is expected later on this year. some big news for california electric vehicle drivers. governor gavin newsom has announced that tesla's superchargers are not going to be opening up to non tesla vehicles. this is part of the governor's plan to deploy thousands of new public charge or statewide. the governor says it's to help make california the most extensive. charging and refueling network in america. the governor tweeted or put out acts that when the switch is official, there will be more than 105,000 public ev chargers. the governor's office released a statement noting that for every 5 gas stations in california, there is now one electric vehicle fast charging station. alameda county taxpayers are going to see a sales tax increase to create more money for child care measure c as a 20 year half-cent sales tax increase

voters passed in 2020, but it was challenged by alameda county taxpayers association. the california supreme court upheld that measure last week. that money will be divided into 2 counts with 20% devoted to pediatric health care, overseen by a citizens oversight committee that other 80% will be dedicated to child care preschool and early education. it will be administered by first 5 alameda county. a former paramedic who injected elijah mcclain with powerful sedatives has now been sentenced. it was the final trial in a case that garnered national attention. rojo omar's has the story. >> elijah, one. and for ever in a triumpaant tone, sheneen mcclain celebrate her son. elijah is legacy following the latest and final hearing of a first responder in this case, the only closure. it brings me that it's the roar fire paramedic jeremy cooper will serve 4 years probation and 14

months work release along with 100 hours. community service 3 year or police officers stood trial in connection with mcclain's death to are acquitted in one found guilty on 2 counts. another medic peter cooney act was also convicted on charges related claims death. colorado attorney general phil weiser commented on friday sentencing saying in part with this sentence, we now have accountability for another defendant who failed to act the way the law requires. and we have a measure of justice for elijah mcclain, his family and loved ones. true justice, however, would be having elijah live today. his death was an unnecessary tragedy. she mclean commented on cooper after his sentencing ray turning the and forever. he will always be >> it don't matter what he does. it doesn't matter what anybody else do to wipe the blood of my son. >> off their hands. she also commented on her son's legacy. i'm standing here as his mother. to say that is not up to anybody to help other people. remember his name alive to do that all by himself at the adams county
