come with a lot of talk in the right hand, almost like a football player with from the football. >> it's a coffee shop in san francisco being praised for stopping a would-be laptop feet. >> when fun time from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news. good evening next joining us for kron. 4 news at 10. i'm ken wayne and i'm noelle bellow. we start tonight with the search. >> of an 8 year-old boy who police say is in danger. they say aiden ortiz. >> was last seen in mountain view on california street escuela avenue. this is a photo of him here on your screen. that's just a block away from running store of park and el camino re out. they say aiden was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt and blue pajama pants. if you see him, you're asked to give police a call. tonight. water safety is top of mind after a weekend of several drownings, including one that was fatal with summer around the corner.

first responders want you to be prepared before heading to the water kron. 4 grant lodes joins us here in the studio with their advice. grant can well, not only will more people be spending time by the water is the weather. >> gets hotter. but this is also a time of year when the rivers are really moving dangerously fast. all that rain is coming down. the snow is melting and among the reported drownings this weekend, a 5 year-old boy who drowned saturday afternoon, bethel island contra costa county crews began to search for the boy in the afternoon. believed to felon to the water. in less than an hour, a diver found the child. he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead to try to prevent disasters. experts recommend taking safety measures at your home. and when you're out and about. have a flotation on your body when you're in or near that cold water. >> staying out of the current

really aware of where you are in relation to fast-moving current. >> life jackets save lives. experts also recommend dressing children in bright neon clothing, bathing suits when they're near a body of water to make them easily visible. if something bad does start to happen. also, if you're near somebody who starts to get into trouble, like they're drowning. experts say immediately called 9-1-1 while waiting for a first responder. they say a safe thing to do is try to reach that person. >> threw them a rope or a pole. >> or maybe a flotation device. they recommend not jumping in the water to try to save that person because they say there's just been several drownings that happens every year due to failed rescued attempts. could be a tough situation, though, to trying to figure what to do in that case. but that's what they recommend slide in the studio tonight. i'm grant lotus. can noel, back to you? >> grant, thank you. more warm weather is expected to continue this week. kron four's kathy trafton joins us

now from the weather center with what to expect out there. kathy, it will be warm in the inland areas, but not so much at the coast. if you're driving across the golden gate bridge right now. >> visibilities. okay. even though the clouds and fog have been streaming through the golden gate, you know where the visibility is not ok, santa rosa at 0 by tomorrow morning. the visibility decreases to 0 in many spots across the bay area. so make your travel credit plans accordingly. the commute hours shows 0 visibility from santa rosa. napa all the way down towards san jose livermore concord and hayward. so there you go. lots of gray skies. in fact, here's the fog cast, as you see tonight is streaming in. but by tomorrow morning, look at how all the fog blankets the bay area and then for your commute. it's pretty bad. but then it like back to the coast. and by the time you head on the evening commute, i think you're a-okay a look ahead. yes, the promise to warm weather that's inland tuesday, wednesday and thursday with wednesday and

thursday, the warmest days at the 7 day forecast coming right up. thank you, kathy. >> for people in east san jose are without a home tonight after a buddhist temple went up in flames. fire crews responding to the 3 alarm fire on foster avenue around 7.40 this evening. those flames were out about an hour later. no one was hurt and no other structures were damaged. a cause has not been determined. >> take a look at a car that was flipped on its side. and fairfield. the highway patrol says they arrested the driver for suspicion of hit-and-run and dui. they also say they found guns in the car. they say the driver tried to run away after crashing, but officers were able to catch up to that driver. >> and pacific, a man's under arrest after driving away from a crash and then hitting a parked car. police say a 2 year-old child was in the car with him. it happened on saturday. officers say deval do a daily on the laura ran a red light and 2 stop signs before crashing into a parked car on and away. police say

they recognized his vehicle from a previous hit and run crash on highway one near crestview drive. no major injuries were reported and either accident aguilar is facing multiple charges, including felony child endangerment. >> community members are remembering the lives of 2 political leaders in the east bay who died in a car crash. peggy moore and her wife hope hope would. we're in a deadly crash over the weekend in san diego county. former oakland mayor libby schaff says moore had a true passion for helping others. she was shafts campaign manager when she ran for mayor in 2015. she had been that. >> state director for obama >> she agreed to be the campaign manager for one term councilmember who was challenging the incumbent. this is back in 2013, 2014, you could not walk anywhere with peggy without it taking like 2 hours, she knew every person. and if she didn't know

that she would just strike up a conversation and get them. >> oakland congresswoman barbara lee also sharing her sadness, saying she's heartbroken. she said peggy was a friend activist one of the best organizer. she knew more and would created a political consulting firm in twenty-twenty called hope action change. the couple met while working on the obama campaign in 2008. >> new at 10 police in the north bay are looking for an inmate who escaped from a conservation camp. they say james shaw was serving a seven-year sentence for robbery and other charges. he was last seen on campgrounds wearing a gray sweatshirt and pants. police are asking people with information to contact them immediately. if you have any idea of his whereabouts. >> cause new police chief has officially started his new job. floyd michel last work asked the chief in lubbock, texas. mitchell says one of his top goals coming into the oakland department is to try

to build truck public trust. brief statement. he said he's looking forward to working with the community. >> i'm looking forward to working with you and with members of the community to can say someone to spend the rest of this week attending different meetings to get brought up to speed on several different things going on within the local police department and within this community. >> reporters were not allowed to ask questions of the chief today. opdc opd says that will happen in the coming weeks. >> for nearly 50 years, the san jose museum of quilt and textiles has showcased art from all over the region and around the world. but now the first museum dedicated to fabric arts in the country is in danger of closing for good kron. four's jack moment explains. >> we're the first museum in the country to focus on tax how arts and that's a very, very unique, a row of other museums along the south side of san jose's downtown.

>> it may be easy to but i think we're really incredible resource for the community. but for san jose museum of, quote, an textiles director, chris johnson, his museum hits above its weight class. i'm here to this wheezing. you'll see kind of the extent of what could be done with fibers. we like the future, our local artists here because we have an incredible history of fiber arts here in the bay area. different are from different artist from san jose. and the far all handmade in fiber. but after nearly 50 years in san jose sofa district, the vibrant and historic exhibit inside the museum may go away for good. unfortunately, due to the pandemic. >> and kind of the changing face of philanthropy. we just haven't been able raise the resources that we need to continue operating the way we would like to. he said the museum needs $300,000 by the summer. >> the funding that we're asking for u.s. help support the staff. we need to operate the museum. it's to help pay our mortgage. it's help keep the lights on. we also have to maintain a collection of over

1500 pieces and our permanent collection. and this my first time here in julian swanson came down from san francisco. happy to be able to be here. little donation to them healthy and keep supporting local art. he says keeping arts alive in the bay has been a struggle. frankly, it's kind of tragic, witch. the way that we covid has affected. is our businesses. artist who shuns like this, i feel like it's >> difficult. you know what the downtowns, less traffic i can imagine has been a big hit for them. the hope is that the museum can collect enough funds from the community. >> it can create an endowment and stay open for years to come in san jose moment kron 4 news. >> thursday is bike to wherever day in san francisco, in honor of may being national bike month. the san francisco bicycle coalition will have citywide rides and a rally at city hall. the day will start at 07:30am, in the morning with rides in golden gate

>> neighbors jumping in to protect each other over the weekend. customers at a san francisco cafe stopped a man from taking off. >> with a woman's laptop kron 4 sarah stinson talked with one of the people who prevented that and she joins us now here in the studio with the story. sarah. >> police say this man seen getting arrested here, ran into a cafe, grabbed the laptop and ran out. but right outside was a man named henry flynn who tackled the alleged thief to the ground and held him there until police arrived. security cameras that caught the whole thing on video. unfortunately, we did not get permission to use it. >> it literally felt like everyone inside the cafe was screaming. henry flynn was enjoying a cup of coffee

outside sanaa cafe saturday evening when he says he saw a man running out with a laptop. flynn works as a security guard. so he says it fell natural to take matters into his own hands. i saw someone running out with the head. >> with a lot of talk in the right hand, almost like a football player would run with the football. i think the momentum of him running in the opposite direction of my arm, pushing him in another direction, made him stumble over towards one of the cars. that was part. and then i had the ability to jump on top of him. this video from frisco live 4, 1, 5, shows san francisco police arresting a 19 year-old man and flynn talking with officers afterwards about what happened. flynn learned from police that the man had snatched a laptop from a woman sitting inside who thinks to flynn and others got it back. >> did you speak to the woman who is left of? it was afterwards. i did. they're really cool. husband or boyfriend. >> yeah, actually, i my phone that what i was running after the guys. so they like the minimum. can we just venmo you a little bit of money? just so you can get your phone fixed.

and was not really too worried about that. this video has circulated on social media. people are now calling flynn a hero, but he humbly disagrees. most people want to do the right thing. it just takes one person to really. >> i get ahead of it and everyone else will follow. >> flynn is a fourth-generation san franciscan who is fundraising to run for mayor this november. >> see myself as representing the silent majority, the city, which is the working class in bread and butter the city. i think what we need right now is the same way what happened at that cafe where everyone came together. we need that citywide. we need everyone coming together who's invested in the heart and soul of the root system of the city like myself. >> the man accused of the laptop that was booked into jail and charged with grand theft and second-degree burglary. so, you know, he's behind bars and a flynn's out there trying to spread the good word of, you know, maybe stepping up when you see something that somebody needs help or something is going on. but it can be scary, right?

yeah. and police suggest you not do that because he could get her to get it or even worse. but he is a security guard. so presumably as a little bit of training. yeah, that does help. >> you know, but, you know, we all see things in the city and in may be at the lease call 9-1-1. lot of people pick up their phones to just shoot video, right? yeah. it's better to take some sort of action, whether that's going for it, which like said police can't calling 9-1-1, definitely in a situation like that. sarah, thank >> new at 10 police in san mateo say cesar targeting honda's over their steering wheel tell us they received reports of at least 17 honda is being broken into over the weekend. they say thieves are stealing steering parts that contain driver airbags. according officers, those parts are worth up to $1000. it could be stolen using a screwdriver. they say the honda center being targeted the most. our civics accords and see rv's. they recommend using security cameras, parking well, lit areas make

sure your car has an alarm. >> a major setback for the group schools over stadiums on their goal to stop public funding towards the new a's stadium in las vegas. kron four's dan kerman reports on why their proposed ballot measure well not be appearing in the next election. >> when the battle lawmakers approved spending 380 million dollars in public money to help fund a stadium in las vegas last june. the nevada teachers union took steps to reverse that decision by putting the issue to a public vote this november. now that won't happen. the nevada supreme court upheld a lower court ruling that the proposed ballot measure was not written correctly and petition signatures cannot be gathered until it's read and to comply with state law fighting. billionaires is never easy. this is just minor setback. alexander marks with the teachers union schools over stadium says the ruling means the measure won't appear on this november's ballot because now there are only 44 days left to rewrite the petition and then collect the 102,000

signatures with no state elections in 2025. that means the next chance for a public vote. his november of 2026. but schools over stadiums remains undeterred. this still remains incredibly unpopular locally. it's still under water. 20%. >> you know, preventing the teachers from going out there ensure every student has a high-quality public education is probably not going help with their polling either. but, you know, we we remain committed to try and help fix the misguided priorities of the state. so not much has really changed. in a statement, the attorney who represents the coalition opposing the ballot measure, which includes the a's, was pleased with the ruling saying all nevadans have a right to participate in direct democracy, but they need to observe the laws that require properly informing the voters of a proposal. this measure failed to do that. all they did was delay if they were hoping for a quick decision and calling it a day and saying that they want that's not what they got today as

part of a 2 pronged attack, schools over stadiums sued the state of nevada saying the passage of that funding measure violates nevada state constitution. that case is yet to come to trial. dan kerman kron, 4 news time now for the 4 zone forecast. as we give you a live look at. >> fairly heavy traffic at this hour on the san mateo not too low of fog in that area. kathy, we know some parts of the day. our chilly tonight. that's right. exactly right. you guys. we definitely have some fog in some areas, but not everywhere. not yet. >> the fog continues to stream in the strata. some low clouds and that will bring us very gray skies and terrible visibility. if you're out on the roads right now. so if you're going to cost the golden gate at this hour, looks like you may have about 2 mile visibility that right here at the exploratory and keep all sculpture skies are clear. you can see it. i looked it up. 4500 notes of the human nation. go figure in terms of visibility. if you're

going in the north bay right now, careful, 0 visibility. there, ok, pretty much everywhere else. san francisco down to about 2 miles this hour. but by tomorrow morning, things really change as you see the clouds move in. 0 visibility from napa, nevada of san francisco, concord and hayward. that's pretty your commute hour in the morning. and then things start to pull back. so it's ok as you head toward midday or so. and then, of course, the clouds and fog move right back in for tomorrow evening. so it's a great start to the day. pretty much everywhere. it pulls back and we'll see some sunshine and even some fairly warm conditions in the warmest spots of the north bay east and the south bay. not too warm right at the coastline. there's not really wind to make a change not to really mix things up. it's common half moon bay, only 12 mile an hour winds right now in san francisco. so that's not going to get rid of the fog, but you'll notice is a very interesting weather features slight area low pressure showing up. we'll talk about that coming up in weather.

>> man has been convicted of killing a woman whose remains were found along the shoreline, a bay farm island, the alameda county district attorney announcing that joseph roberts was found guilty of second-degree murder for the killing of rachel buckner of pleasanton. police say buckner roberts live together at the time of the killing. roberts faces 15 years to life in prison. his sentencing is scheduled for next month. >> the man convicted of attacking paul pelosi will learn his fate in federal court this week. david de pap sentencing is set for friday and federal prosecutors are asking a judge for a 40 year prison sentence. the pop was convicted last year for the attempted kidnapping and assault of a federal official back in october of 2022. during the trial, the pap admitted he broke into the pelosi home with full intent of holding nancy pelosi hostage. >> take a look at the damage done to a home in east san jose. the house on the cul-de-sac of lake ridge lane caught fire on saturday. 2 people have been displaced. they were not hurt.

talks of possibly relocating the event or canceling it altogether, but neither is happening. the festival takes place. >> at pier 80, some people who live across the bay in alameda have said the music from the event is too loud. kron four's lezla gooden reports on what the festival is now planning on doing differently this year to try and prevent those noise. complaints. the portola music festival is returning to pier 80 in san francisco for its 3rd year in a row. the festival has not only made a name for itself with its musical lineup, but also for its noise, complaints or how with by brady >> we thought it might have firework for david bronner. could jack up heavy have lived in alameda for 25 years. >> and recall hearing the music across the bay kind gets wrapped. it has that, you know, we're not it came out of the blue, you know, in 2023, many residents and alameda complained about the loud music so much. the alameda

officials were seeking to prevent the festival or haven't relocated. the city says the festival scheduled to take place september 28th and 29th is making an effort to reduce the noise and vibration levels. some of the measures include lowering the volume and pace levels. sound checks days before the festival ending all outdoor music at 10:45pm on sunday and having a community hotline where residents can call and the festival can adjust sound levels and real time. >> i think the fact that they're even being aware of trying to bait. think about what you know, how it's going to i think that makes me feel much better about >> just got phone number call to get really left shoulder louder year. i totally agree. i like that better that. the city felt like what do you we reached out to golden boys who puts on the 2 day festival for comment.

>> we're given the following statement. we will be monitoring and utilizing every option available to us at this time to maintain sound levels within compliance. and city officials say they will share the community hotline closer to the event in alameda loves a good in kron. 4 news. >> 5 people including 4 children tried to run off with a cash register in vallejo over the weekend. but police say that register they stole had a tracker which allowed officers to find them right away. police say the theft happened saturday at a business on tennessee and amador streets. officers say one of the suspects hit the cashier with a handgun before taking off with the register police found and arrested all 5 suspects they also found the gun and all the stolen cash. >> dozens of parents and students in the east bay are left scrambling after their school closed abruptly the elementary and middle school new horizons held its last school day friday. principal

says slow enrollment limited staff and financial troubles led them to file for bankruptcy. he says the school couldn't afford to keep utilities on and it still owes pay to at least 16 staff members, at least 8 families who are unaware of the pending closure paid next year's $14,000 tuition early. they have to wait 90 days before they can make a request for reimbursement to get their money back. >> city of santa clara could soon get more money to fix storm drains roads and sewer systems. city leaders there are considering a bond measure for the november ballot that will pay for millions and infrastructure projects. this also includes upgrades to fire stations, which they say are more than 50 years old and needs some critical repairs. we'll be following that process and let you know if that bond makes it on the ballot. with that. let's get you a check of your 4 zone forecast as we take a live look at a pretty quiet bay bridge toll plaza. yeah, it's a mateo bridge. few minutes

kathy and everybody seemed to be the bay bridge and no font. >> yeah, that's the good news. no fog. that is key. that's one of the big weather stories at this time because some places where you drive is going to be 0 visibility. guess where that would be the north bay. we're looking at north bay temperatures. okay. but it's the fog. that's a real problem. so if you're getting in the car, be careful out there. golden gate so far, ok, we're going to see 0 from santa rosa nevado san francisco and napa to for visibility. so this isn't so good by tomorrow morning. more clouds and fog live arrived and we're going to see 0 visibility even down in hayward livermore, san jose. then things clear out by the midday or so as you expect the low clouds and fog start to burn off safe to drive. here's a look at the fog forecast. you can see fog just blanketing right across entire bay area. it gets thicker. it gets deeper. so a deeper penetration of clouds and fog

into tomorrow morning. this is how your commute looks. if you're heading out say around 8.30, in all pulls back to the coast and then by tomorrow night to goes right back in again. probably not quite as cloudy and foggy tomorrow as tonight in terms of winds, not enough, really to mix things up. so said san francisco has 12 mile an hour winds. it's calm in half moon bay. the interesting weather feature is contributing to our clouds and fog is a little area of low pressure. this is starting to push right across the southern california coastline. it's affecting their weather. of course, it's heading through the southwest part of these united states. but for us, it's just starting to deepen getting a little reinforcing push for clouds and fog. so there's a marine layer. there is an area of high pressure out the pacific. it's keeping things fairly tranquil. so that's the good news. and a live camera show us great conditions. so visibility not so great. and i were looking

for temperatures tomorrow 50's and 60's one along the coast into the 70's and 80's inland. and we're going to see for the next 5 days, everything pretty much the same has today clouds fog and then some warm conditions inland. that's good news. not a bad place to be stock. yeah, no, not at all. it's okay to have a cool- morning and then a nice warm or, you afternoon. exactly. to slow down in the yeah. that would be careful out there. thank you, kathy. >> taking a live look tonight at sfo where some major airlines are not happy with a new rule requiring transparency. >> about service fees. they're now suing the department of transportation. the airlines involved in the suit include delta, united, jetblue and alaska airlines. they claim the new rule is an attempt to regulate private businesses. they also say the rule will only confuse cup consumers and complicate the buying process. but federal officials say the rule will and bait and switch

tactics. the airlines used to disguise the real cost of discounted flights. >> the new state bill seeks to increase the penalty for drivers caught speeding in sacramento. lawmakers and advocates held this protest calling it a die in. they say they want to raise awareness about the thousands of people killed due to speeding the new bill they want past would add 2 points to the driving records of those who go over the speed limit by 26 miles an hour right now. the punishment is just one point and that can usually be erased from a driver's record with driving school. driving is not a game and it's not a chance to go for a 10. your vin diesel. that you're in fast and furious it's a deadly weapon. speed kills. we should be doing so much more. but at least we can do. >> it's send out a warning to people if they're going to be driving recklessly fast. >> the teamsters union opposes the bill. it argues the proposal will
