governor gavin newsom spoke at the vatican within the last few hours or so about 4 o'clock am our time he discussed climate change and what california is doing to fight it. he also had the opportunity to speak with world leaders and showcase his work as governor here in california, which could play a role in his political future. should he decide to run for higher office in the future? this three-day summit is all about bending the curve and bouncing forward to climate resilience. governor newsom spoke to a delegation of about 100 people. you see there, including the mayor of paris and the governor of new york, all who are calling for urgent climate action newsom called the climate crisis a clear present and danger causing severe intense storms and historic fires that have been seen across california. the governor didn't hold back also when it came to calling out the fossil fuel industry. take a listen. >> calling this climate crisis, what it is the climate crisis is a fossil fuel crisis. the climate crisis is a fossil fuel crisis. it's

because the burning of coal, the burning of gas and the burning of oil. and with respect and forgive me if this comes off a little too harsh, it's been said and repeat it. the polluted heart. of the climate crisis. are these fossil fuel companies that had been lying to us? they've been deceiving us. they've known to the science. they've denied the science. they've delayed it. van spent. we have the tools. we have the technology. we have the capacity to address this issue at a global level of skill level and they've been fighting every single advancement and we have got to call that out. >> oil companies have long pushed against a newsom's allegations arguing his administration has unfairly targeted them during his time in politics when it comes to pope francis. well, he's an influential figure, as we know among american catholics and a

that is happening at this quote, unsafe, boarded up fire, damaged building. it's a block away from people's park in 2 blocks from campus. palestine. protesters taking over berkeley's and ahead complex wednesday afternoon. resisting with palestinians who was the bravest strongest demonstrators refused to do an interview with kron 4 but did announce a list of 4 demands live. >> from people car how all right. apollo bay and the caught happen. >> protesters set up tents, hung a palestinian flags and even spray painted the sidewalks in parts of the building. it's unclear if these are cal students or even

berkeley residents. this protest does fall on the 55th anniversary of people's park which is being turned into new housing for students and low-income residents. it's been closed and blocked off since january, which has since sparked many protests. nicholas alexander says he was there the first day. the park closed, but he became visibly upset at the presence of these protesters. seems like they're just here do. >> i to get attention, frankly. because i don't know. i haven't seen them before. you know, why were you here on january 4th, when i was chased by swat while a cal alumni walking by says he sees no problem with people protesting on vacant land. like why shouldn't they be able to take that space? it's out of the way and it's not causing traffic or anything like that. >> they should be able you know, protest here. police have been seen around here taking pictures monitoring the situation, but no one has been removed, nor arrested says definitely a fluid situation. check kron 4 dot com. >> for the latest, i'm sara stinson reporting berkeley.

back to you. >> thank you very much. 807, is the time developing out of the north bay. we also have sonoma states president now on administrative leave after coming to an agreement with pro palestinian demonstrators on that campus without getting permission from the university. first in a letter sent out tuesday, president mike lee said that he listen to protesters demands and that, quote, none of us should be on the sidelines when human beings are subject to mass killing and destruction and quote, lee went on to announce the sonoma state would look at divesting from israel and would end an exchange program with that country. protestors applauded the announcement. however, the university's leadership was less than pleased neither was state senator scott wiener. >> what i saw the announcement from the president of sonoma state. my jaw drops absolutely unacceptable. what sonoma state is proposing to do is to basically block plus israeli

academics. it's a complete academic. we caught it any kind of student exchange between sonoma, state universities in this route. >> well, lee released a new statement backtracking. his decision saying, quote, in my attempt to find agreement with one group of students, i marginalized other members of our student population and community. i realize the harm that this has caused and i take full ownership of it and quote, now he goes on to say that the initial letter was sent without the approval of the university system's chancellor or board leaders. the csu chancellor also put out a statement to saying that the heart and mission of csu is to create and inclusive and welcoming place for everyone. >> it's 809, in the east bay to businesses in concord are rammed by a car with stolen plates. on the same night. and in both cases, the thieves left without taking one thing. both break-ins happened monday night. first here at micro measurements and pacific

instruments on pike lane. that company makes data systems too. for clients like nasa and u.s. military and the surveillance video shows this leaves slamming a car into the roll-up door when they get inside, they look around and then they leave empty, handed them a couple minutes later, a couple miles away on way. you see a white car slammed into the front of h s d engineering, which is another high-tech business. and again, after they go in, they come out, take off without stealing anything. >> decided to trash their car my door and right away. i suspect they're looking for a marijuana grow house. luckily the only thing that saved them from completely demolishing through our building was are recently purchased forklift. it also has doubled as the new way to open and close the you know, the forklift got in the way. and now the business is offering a $500 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the crew. >> that broke into their business. teachers across the

bay area are rallying for better conditions. the teachers at fairfield sassoon unified plan to rally this morning at the district office is they want to bring attention to their contract negotiations. they say this is all going to happen after class gets out. organizers want to attract and retain highly qualified educators with a salary that keeps up with the cost of living. they say so far there has been no progress with the district and they want the negotiations to resume. >> well, meanwhile, teachers with the contra costa county schools, education association will also be hosting a rally of thing county's office of education. this is video from a rally they held a few years ago. more current rally is expected to happen as their bargaining team sits down with the county as they push for increased salaries and proper intake procedures for students. that's what they say they're pushing for. the group says it may strike in the fall if a deal isn't reached. we're going take a break here 11. still ahead on the kron, 4

little bit of a surprise this morning. it's a about this is like blocking all the fog this morning for so you have a flight there take they don't say that all that often don't. it's not usually like that. the seven-year but hate. there we go. all the are pulling it up this morning. so not a lot of fog, but you can see those clouds in the distance. there actually had a really nice sunrise out there this morning. and this is your view from san jose, of course, with even more sunshine down in the south bay, where we're seeing that fog. it is hugging the coastline. tight right through the golden gate and it's really streamed up into the car this morning. we had some really strong winds up into the delta are windy. a spot has been vacaville, but thank those winds because they're cooling you down a lot today up in solano county, high pressure to the west is going to continue to keep this forecast dry, but not necessarily warm. in fact, the entire west coast in our latest extended outlook is looking cooler than average. so this is a trend of cool weather that continues well into next week. yesterday was

the warmest today a little bit cooler. any changes we have or ever so slight. it really is just a wash, rinse, repeat, kind of cycle here with the fog during the mornings, the sunshine during the afternoons. tomorrow, though, that fog is going out even longer than today's contributing to an even cooler day. today's daytime highs in the 50's to 60's towards the coast and that it will be 60's to 70's for the bayshore. and yes, those 70's to 80's inland, all things that we've been seeing a lot of lately, low 80's for the south bay today, 70's along the east bay shoreline, pleasanton and livermore hanging on to the 80's. well, san ramon up to conquer down in the 70's vacaville. our biggest drop from yesterday down from 89 to 80 degrees today. and tomorrow is going to be just a touch cooler. staying in the 70's for almost everyone from friday. well, into next week right now. all right, john, thank you for that disease. our thus far an hour to make it a long 1, 0, 1, 85 to menlo park. >> 2, 80 82. we're seeing some

tell you that. but maybe circle back in a couple of weeks. but nonetheless, you can go there. look for the walgreens brand and it will be a lot cheaper. $35. that's with their advertising compared to the current $45 for the name brand. either way it works. the same. usually they wait for a patent and that takes several years. but this actually only past about one year ago meeting it was available and then our canned brand one year ago. and here we go with the generic brand narcan a brand is $45. the reason why they're doing this, obviously, as daria mention the crisis going on in america, stars opioid overdose. they say 107,000 people overdose last year and many of them because of opioid newark and whether it's the name brand or the generic brand, they have the ingredient in there to help people breathe. if they happen to overdose. so you can get it online or you go to walgreens and get it yourself again.

francisco. dan thorn kron, 4 >> the family of angelo quinto has reached a multimillion dollar settlement now with the city of antioch. too, was a filipino american veteran. he died by fix yet after police knelt on his neck back in 2020, his family says he was having a mental health crisis when they called police to help as part of the settlement approved by the city council tuesday night. the family will now be awarded 7 and a half million dollars. civil rights attorney john burris says this case has the potential now to save the lives of others like keto. >> given a new mindset that has developed here in this city some of the other cities around that we won't have seeking help families seeking help losing their loved ones at a time when different form interaction, intrusive form, a less aggressive form i could could have resolved it differently. >> mayor of antioch was also there. he says, while it's unusual for a city official to

legislation would prevent any new fees from going over the rate of inflation. it would also stop the california public utilities commission for making a fixed charge greater than $10 per month. that will be after the year 2028, the new monthly fixed charge at the moment is now $24.15. a month. utility companies have long said they need to impose a fixed charge to help pay for grid maintenance and the state's transition to green technology. >> we're afraid that people will have a disincentive to do things like turn off the lights, lower the thermostat and summer and also to hang your clothes to dry, something that i would do to save electricity. if i'm in a paper that any way with a fix charge, what incentive is there to do? >> well, this bill will go before the assembly appropriations committee this week. we'll see what happens >> in the south bay, san jose, garbage and recycling rates are going up again. the city is proposing a 4% rate increase a month for single family service and a 2% hike

for a multi service family service. a spokesperson for the san jose environmental services department says the hikes are due to the rising costs that they have to cover a living adjustments and operational fees. they raise their rates last july after reviewing their revenue in cost city councilmember plus executives for different organizations in the city say that although the hike is modest, it's still going to have an impact on residents facing financial challenges, a public hearing and a vote on this is going to happen. june 4th. later this month, low-income families can visit the monterey bay aquarium for free. and this is thanks to the museum for all program which launched in 2014. this is a program where if you're on food stamps, for families on food stamps, you can go into the aquarium, just presenting a valid calfresh card and a photo id has a matching name and you can bring up to 3 guests for friess. that's a family of 4 for free. seeing the amazing things the aquarium has to offer. the program begins. may

was here say they are in newsom's plan to cut more than 18 billion dollars from state programs. he says the cuts are necessary to close a projected 27.6 billion dollar deficit. but attendees are concerned. newsom's proposal includes productions to programs designed to assist low income californians struggling to make ends meet. >> i definitely feel that these cuts would be detrimental cuddle. florida says she's very concerned about a proposed 764 million dollar cut to cow works. a state funded welfare program that gives cash aid and employment services. >> to eligible california, families in need powers completely changed my life. i was a like that. had nothing to me. i couldn't save. i couldn't buy my son like the basic needs that he needed. and >> now i'm able to stand on my own. i have an education and i have a future. thanks to cowards. and by taking those those programs, the way we're we're we're depleting the community and society. other proposed productions include cuts to programs for broadband access. >> water, storage and local and state public health departments. but many here say

they will especially fight a proposed 230 million dollar cut for foster care programs. we can do better. >> right now, the state of california has 15,000 empty prison. bates. and if we close the empty prison beds, we can save a billion dollars a year that we could use child care providers that we could use for foster youth that we could use for cowards account friends that we could use for education. so hold us accountable. >> we reached out to the governor's office for a response to this rally and they referred us to this statement the governor made during his budget presentation last friday indicating he would prefer not to make such cuts, but he feels he may have no other choice. these are programs that i long advanced. many of them. none of this is. >> working. enjoy but you've got to do we have to be responsible. we have to be accountable and legislators have until june 15 to review the governor's proposals and passed a fully balanced budget reporting at the state capitol. a tonn wallace. >> kron 4 news.

>> a union representing about 48,000 academic workers. the uc system votes to give the executive board the ability to strike at any time because they believe the university of california mishandled the pro-palestinian demonstrations on campuses. specifically here at the ucl k 8 ucla campus. and that's where protesters attacked a pro-palestinian encampment for several hours without police intervention. the vote does not guarantee a strike. and 8 of the uc campuses still have a month instruction left before summer break. half moon bay's planning commissioners approved new housing for low-income senior farmworkers. this after governor newsom threatened legal action over a delay in approving the plan. the 40 unit affordable housing project is going move forward. now more than a year after the deadliest shooting in the country's history happened there when the governor met with survivors, he toured what were found to be deplorable, living conditions for the farm

workers. any budget in millions in funding and resources to ensure that the workers get support from the state. >> in the north bay, a disturbing find now inside of a home in rio vista. this left an entire retirement community shaken an elderly woman's body was found by police and the suspected killer, they say is her own son. earlier this week, officers went to a home on birch ridge drive. it's where the trilogy retirement community is. they say concerned neighbors called about the location of a local woman hadn't seen her for a while. they want the police to do a welfare check. officers arrived at that home where she lived. they say they were met at the door by her. 57 year-old son jeffrey 8 can and they say things quickly escalated when officers tried to check on the woman. but 8 can physically stop them from entering the home. he was detained and that's when officers went inside and made the grim discovery. finding the 78 year-old mother's body. >> in my experience as a veteran law enforcement officer, normal people do not

kill their mothers. it's a very mitch. violent crime. it's one of the, you know, still one of the worst murders you can do the killing of of a parent or a child. >> and the megan's law website also confirmed that a can is also a convicted offender. the full circumstances surrounding the woman's death, hawaii to how that's all being investigated. now by detectives with the solano county sheriff's office. gatos police department now warning people about an uptick in burglaries at home construction sites and in unoccupied homes for sale. police say thieves are stealing appliances that were staged in homes or ones that were delivered to construction sites and that these crimes tend to happen at night or early in the morning. so they're urging people not to lock up their doors and windows sent home alarms and utilize whatever security devices you have to protect that equipment. >> in san pablo, an oakland woman is arrested for stealing this taco truck. san pablo
