temps. couple spots like brentwood in vacaville hanging out right around 70 degrees. now later on today, daytime highs will push upwards into the upper 70's to low 80's at the very warmest. back to you. >> thanks a lot. 10. 0, 1, and new this morning, governor newsom is at the vatican taking part in a world climate summit with the pope and other leaders. yeah, trump was michael thomas following the story for us up in the newsroom. michael. good morning, everyone. governor gavin newsom arrived there at the vatican to speak. would say probably about 04:00am our time. during that time he discussed climate change in really what california is doing. >> to fight it. but it not only gave him the opportunity to talk about that, but also to speak with world leaders and showcase his work as a governor, which could play a role in his political future. should he decide to run for higher office? this three-day summit is all about bending the curve and bouncing forward to climate resilience. governor newsom spoke to a delegation of about 100 people. >> including the mayor of paris and the governor of new

york all calling for urgent climate action calling this climate crisis. what it is the climate crisis is a fossil fuel crisis. newsom called the climate crisis a clear and present danger causing severe droughts, intense storms and historic wildfires have been seen across california when it came to calling out the fossil fuel industry. the governor didn't hold back is because the burning of coal, the burning of gas and the burning of oil. and with respect forgive me if this comes off a little too harsh, it's been said and repeat it. the polluted heart. of the climate crisis. are these fossil fuel companies? oil companies have long pushed back against newsom's allegations arguing his administration has unfairly targeted them during his time in politics. and as for pope francis, he was an influential figure among american catholics and a leader in the fight against global warming. well, he spoke to the delegation privately in a message that focused on taking care of the poor and the planet. tomorrow. governor newsom is expected to travel

to the city of to launch a new climate partnership with the italian region of emilia romagna. as we get more on his trip overseas will keep you updated. he did send out a press release recently essentially going on to say he wants to maintain these good relationships. >> with these 4 leaders, especially when it comes to climate change in california being the leader of live this morning in the newsroom. i'm michael thomas story of james. we'll send it back to thanks, michael. >> it is 10. 0, 3, and also new this morning, san francisco officials are celebrating a pretty big milestone when it comes to their homeless outreach program reyna harvey has the details. good morning. good morning. that's right. so last year the city launched their heart program. >> but actually stands for homeless engagement, outreach and response. so the program is meant to engage with those that are experiencing homelessness as an alternative to either a law enforcement response. the teams are only dispatch to engage with community when there's no indication a crime, no violence threats, mental health or medical needs

president. so he says they helped about 300 people every week and in the first year, heart actually address over 13,000 calls. service and they completed 100% of those requests, including maybe blocked sidewalks as well as small encampment, even placed 144 people into an emergency shelter or either on the waitlist, they completed 168 applications for calfresh as well as medicare. now you have heart workers, the training to use the drug. naloxone. they also are trained to de-escalate situations. they even are aware of the cultural and gender awareness is to best serve. the community will send it back to both the desk. thank you. enough. >> okay. another big story that we're following this morning. pro-palestinian demonstrators take over an abandoned building now near uc berkeley. the new protest is happening and i had complex, which is but a boarded-up building next to people's party kron four's. sara stinson explains. >> a group of pro-palestine

protesters broke into head complex. take a look. you can see on the sidewalk here. it says free palestine. this is a boarded up building. university officials say they are aware of the vandalism that is happening at this quote, unsafe, boarded up fire, damaged building. it's a block away from people's park in 2 blocks from campus. palestine. protesters taking over berkeley's and ahead complex wednesday afternoon. resisting with palestinians who was the bravest strongest demonstrators refused to do an interview with kron 4 but did announce a list of 4 demands live. >> from people parked outside. all right. the caught happen.

>> protesters set up tents, hung a palestinian flags and even spray painted the sidewalks in parts of the building. it's unclear if these are cal students or even berkeley residents. this protest does fall on the 55th anniversary of people's park which is being turned into new housing for students and low-income residents. it's been closed and blocked off since january, which has since sparked many protests. nicholas alexander says he was there the first day. the park closed, but he became visibly upset at the presence of these protesters. it seems like they're just here do. >> i to get attention, frankly, because i don't know. i haven't seen them before. you know, why were you here on january 4th, when i was chased by swat while a cal alumni walking by says he sees no problem with people protesting on vacant land. like why shouldn't they be able to take that space? it's out of the way and it's not causing traffic or anything like that. they should be able you know, protest here. police have been

seen around here taking pictures monitoring the situation, but no one has been removed, nor arrested says definitely a fluid situation. check kron 4 dot com. >> for the latest, i'm sara stinson reporting berkeley. back to you. >> well, 10, 0, 7, is the time. and in the north bay, we have some developing news out of sonoma state where part of the president there is on administrative leave after coming to an agreement with those pro palestinian demonstrators on campus without getting permission from the university. first. so in the letter that he sent out on tuesday, president mike lee said that he listen to the protesters and agreed that quote, none of us should be on the sidelines when human beings are subject to mass killing and destruction, end quote, he went on to announce that sonoma state would look at divesting from israel and would end an exchange program with that country. the protestors applauded the announcement, but the university's leadership was not very happy. state senator scott wiener wasn't either. >> when i saw the announcement

from the president of sonoma state. my jaw drops absolutely unacceptable. what sonoma state is proposing to do is to basically blocks list israeli academics. it's a complete academic. we caught it any kind of student exchange between sonoma, state universities in this route. >> well, lee released a new statement backtracking on his decision saying, quote, in my attempt to find agreement with one group of students. i marginalized other members of our student population and community. i realize the harm that this has caused and i take full ownership of it. and quote, now he did go on to say in that letter that the initial letter was sent without the approval of the university system's chancellor and board leaders. the chancellor did put out a statement saying that the heart and mission of csu is to create an inclusive and welcoming place for everyone.

way to open and close the door to new thanks to have they still have a lot of damage repair and they're offering a $500 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the crew that broke into the business. >> teachers across the bay area are rallying. they want better working conditions. >> teachers at fairfield sassoon unified are rallying at the district offices. they want to bring attention to the fact that they are in contract negotiations they're they're not doing until after class so that it doesn't affect the school day. they want to attract and retain highly qualified teachers with a salary that keeps up with the cost of living. and they say so far they haven't had progress in negotiating a contract with the school district. >> meanwhile, teachers with the contra costa county schools, education association will be hosting a rally at the county's office of education. this is video from a similar rally. they held a few years ago. this rally is expected to happen as their bargaining

as hot as yesterday. yesterday's not just the warmest day, this week's forecast, but it's looking likely that is going to be the warmest day of the next 2 weeks forecast as our long-range models are projecting the entire west coast, actually going to be cooler than average as we really wrap up the month of may. so we are going to be looking at temperatures today. still warm, but a little more comfortable foggy at the coastline. maybe not your best coastal day. if you want to cause some sunshine inland areas again tomorrow morning, we'll see that dose of fog and a very dense marine layer again for your friday. start tomorrow. today's highs similar to yesterday in san francisco 50's and 60's up the coast while 60's to 70's for the bayshore probably guessed it. those 70's to 80's back for inland areas. but less hot than yesterday. for our peak temperatures, it's tri valley down in the upper 70's in dublin, anyways, looking at oakland and richmond down in the 60's and yesterday's warm spot vacaville, not today's warm spot down 9 degrees to 80

degrees today. so not so bad. fact, pretty comfortable for inland spots. we stay that way through this forecast. take a look at those 70's for inland averages fro friday through the middle of next week. coastal areas stay cool in the 50's to 60's james and darya. thank you, john. >> okay. alameda county district attorney pamela price. find yourself back on the campaign trail again, 16 months after assuming office she has to convince voters not to recall her in november. crawford's tiffany justice has the story. >> we are ready to tell people the truth. wednesday district attorney pamela price and supporters with protect the wind for public safety gathering in oakland defending er time as district attorney 2 weeks ago. the alameda county board of supervisors certify the signatures required for recall tuesday evening. they voted thao recall will be part of the general election in november. the recall effort coming from a committee called save alameda for everyone da prize addressing what she believes has been misinformation

disseminated about her. we will tell the truth and we will counteract the lies and the misinformation campaign. >> that has been amplified by certain folks in the media and certain people. there's been a whole lot of misinformation. price says she will continue to do her job as district attorney while campaigning saying that the people in 2023 took to the polls vote her in. >> it was the first time in 45 years since there was a contested election. >> the people of alameda county went to the polls to elect a district attorney for the first time since 9, the mid 1970's in over 45 years. we have not had a contested election. i'm the first non appointed non anointed district attorney in this county in 100 and so the people exercise their democratic right to elect a district attorney and we won that election has ms gifts

fair and square with 53% of the vote. >> behind a price, a group of supporters and volunteers. he raised parents they're just hating on for no apparent reason she's doing her job. alameda county says combining the recall election with the general election will cost 4 million dollars as opposed to between 15 20 million dollars. it would cost to hold a special election. the decision to go by the 2 was supported by prize price, reiterating that the alameda county registrar of voters did not follow the charter, saying the recall process was in legal reporting. tiffany justice kron, 4 news. >> in the east bay, a person has died after a hit and run in san leandro. it happened last night on the willing boulevard west of embers way what crews arrived. they found the victim lying on the road, apparently died there at the scene. no word on a suspect or suspects. francisco's first and only cannabis shop in the hunters point neighborhood owned by a black woman is at risk of closing. now the owner

of that building at hunters point looking to sell and after the lease is up at the end of the month, that's when they're going to do this believes the shop owner is benton with just weeks to come up with the money buy the space. she says her dispensary called posh green cannabis boutique has become something of a a positive in the neighborhood. benton is hoping they don't turn into another small business tragedy story. >> nobody believed in his neighborhood. i was nobody want to be on his back. when i got here the crime, you know, and i took a chance on this neighborhood. i want remain here so we can have black woman owned business in this community as we should. >> now, benton has a goal of raising about $200,000 for a down payment. she understands it's a lofty goal but wants to continue serving the community. >> it's 10, 20 and a san francisco man now faces multiple charges for more than 2 dozen organized retail thefts that happened across the city in just 20 years old.

they say he was part of an organized retail theft ring that targeted multiple businesses from last december to april of this year and now he faces up to 70 charges. a preliminary hearing is next month. in the south bay, san jose. garbage and recycling rates are about to go up again. the city is proposing a 4% hike in prices per month for single-family service and 2% rate hike for family services. a multi service, the spokesperson for san jose manuel services says that these hikes are needed because of the rising costs and covering living adjustments and operational fees. they raise their rates last july after reviewing their cost and revenue. then city council member and also executives for different organizations. they say that this by ike, if you look at it, on us. but they point out is still going impact. residents facing financial challenges. there will be a public hearing and a vote on it on june. 4th. >> for your money this morning, a new bill is in the works right now to try and

bring down that new flat fee on utility bills. if signed that legislation would prevent any new fee increases from going over the rate of inflation. and it would also stop this cp. you see the california public utilities commission from making a fixed charge greater than $10 a month after the year 2028, the new monthly fixed charge they just put into place was for $24.15 a month. utility companies have long said they need to impose fixed charges like this to help pay for grid maintenance and the state's transition to green tech. we're afraid that. >> people will have a disincentive to do things like turn off the lights, lower the thermostat and summer and also to hang your clothes to dry, something that i would do to save electricity to finding the pay for that anyway with a fix charge, what incentive is there to do? >> now, the bill is going to go before the assembly appropriations committee this week. we'll see what happens. >> it's 10, 22. right now san francisco is hosting the latinos in tech summit. it's

reached a multimillion dollar settlement with the city of antioch. kato was a filipino american veteran who died bikes fix it after police knelt on his neck back in 2020, his family says he was having a mental health crisis when they called police to help. as part of the settlement approved by the city council tuesday night, the family will be awarded 7 and a half million dollars. civil rights attorney john burris, who you see there says this case has the potential now to save others just like keto. >> given the new mindset that has developed here in this city some of the other cities around that we won't have seeking help families seeking help losing their loved ones at a time when different form interaction, intrusive form, a less aggressive form i could could have resolved it differently. >> the mayor of antioch was there as well. and he says while it is unusual for city officials to take part in a settlement announcement like this, he wanted to start that process of change. >> soon at walgreens, you can

to thanks. a lot of 10, 30 right now and hundreds of people took to the state capital urging the governor. >> to reverse his plan to cut billions of dollars out of the state budget. yeah. let's get more on this from capitol correspondent eytan wallace. >> well, just take a look at all of the people here who came to capitol park. they say the governor's proposed budget cuts will have real-life consequences and now they're urging him to change course. >> some 200 people making their voices loud and clear in front of the state capitol. all to urge governor gavin newsom to reconsider his proposal to cut billions of dollars from the state budget. was here say they are angry and newsom's plan to cut more than 18 billion dollars from state programs. he says the cuts are necessary to close a projected 27.6 billion dollar deficit. but attendees are concerned. newsom's proposal includes productions to programs designed to assist low income californians struggling to make ends meet.

>> i definitely feel that these cuts would be detrimental cuddle. florida says she's very concerned about a proposed 764 million dollar cut to cow works. a state funded welfare program that gives cash aid and employment services. >> to eligible california, families in need powers completely changed my life. i was a like that. had nothing to me. i couldn't say i couldn't buy my son like the basic needs that he needed. and >> now i'm able to stand on my own. i have an education and i have a future thanks to cowards. and by taking those those programs, the way we're we're we're depleting the community and society. other proposed productions include cuts to programs for broadband access. >> water, storage and local and state public health departments. but many here say they will especially fight a proposed 230 million dollar cut for foster care programs. we can do better. >> right now, the state of california has 15,000 empty prison. bates. and if we close the empty prison beds, we can save a billion dollars a year

this week officers went to a home on birch ridge drive. that's where the trilogy retirement communities located. they say concerned neighbors called them because they hadn't seen a local woman in several days. they were worried one of them to do it. welfare check. and when officers arrived at the home, they say they were met at the door by her. 57 year-old son jeffrey 8. nick, now things they say quickly escalated from there when 8 nick refused to let police talk to his mother, even check on her. he eventually was detained. police went to the home. that's when they made grim discovery. >> in my experience as a veteran law enforcement officer, normal people do not kill their mothers. it's a very mitch. violent crime. it's it's one of the, you know, still one of the worst murders you can do the killing of of a parent or a child. >> the megan's law website confirms that 8. nick is also a convicted offender. the circumstances surrounding the

woman's death, the motive, that method that's all still being investigated now by solano county sheriff's deputies. los altos police department, meanwhile, is warning people about an uptick in burglaries at home construction sites and unoccupied homes for sale. so police say thieves are stealing appliances, staged inside of homes and ones that were delivered to construction sites and that these crimes tend to happen at night or early in the morning. so they're urging people to lock their doors and windows and sent home alarms and utilize whatever security devices you have to protect that property. >> in sao pablo, an oakland woman was arrested for stealing the taco truck. the see here which san pablo police found they got a call that there was a to a stolen taco truck and within the hour, they found it on the other side of town and a woman was in it. she was rummaging through some stuff. she had an apron on and she told the police that she stole it because she was hungry. the taco truck was turned to its owner.

>> well, with the ongoing drug crisis throughout the country, walgreens is now offering a cheaper version of narcan and that could be sold over the counter. and our kron four's will tran has been following this the creek. >> you can save money and you can save a life. walgreens is getting into the fight against drug overdose in america. now, according to the centers for disease control 107,000 people year died from drug overdose. many of them because of opioid. now walgreens. at the end of the month, they plan to roll out their own brand generic of the newark and brand has been available for about year now. it's about and it's over the counter at that time. it was considered a breakthrough. now a nother breakthrough. now walgreens plans to do the same thing at $35. it will not require a prescription meaning you don't have to go to the pharmacist. a lot of people were concerned about that because of the

flying out in style at sfo. the new harvey milk terminal. it's almost done come mid june. you will find their new shops, restaurants, art displays and of course, there will be airplane gates in all of the new things to check in and then waiting areas for you both alaska and delta plan to move their operations into the new terminal later this year. the project cost about 2.5 billion dollars. but the airport says it's worth it. >> we really invest heavily in the features, the amenities, the experience inside the terminal. we get that back in the form of people are spending more money in the terminal there, shopping and dining more. they're spending more time enjoying their stay in the terminals. >> it's more zipping use through whole thing. i don't care about necessarily have a shop how to get through security, which should be easier. look at these self-check in kiosks and everything. the new harvey milk terminal has a ribbon cutting and a public opening on june. 11th.
