eastbound side of the san mateo bridge that slows down on both sides of the bridge. they got that cleared. now we're down to 15 minutes, a 80 to one on good things which was ever feel bridge. 12 minutes tolls to waddle and the golden gate bridge. 37 of the tolls 20 minutes. all right. as back to you, thank you. reyna 71. and today the man who attacked paul pelosi with a hammer. >> at his home in san francisco is going to be sentenced. david de pap could face up to 50 years in prison for us will tran following the story for us out of the federal courthouse. >> in san francisco will. >> james, it will happen in 3 hours from now. a federal judge will decide how much time he will spend behind bars. prosecutors are asking 40 years. you mentioned 50 years. they're looking for 40 years. >> of that saying during during the trial of david de pap showed no remorse about it, that he actually took the stand and he bragged about the attack. now, let me show you the video. this all went down about 17 months ago back on

october, 28th 2022. when david de pap went to the pelosi home in san francisco, looking for then speaker of the house, nancy pelosi, he wanted to talk to nancy pelosi and even said that is she lied to him. he would break her kneecaps. but instead paul pelosi was the one at home. he woke up seeing pap in front of him at his dad. now he called the police department body camera footage shows that when the police officers arrived at the door, pap and pelosi were at the front door according to prosecutors. that's when pap realize that his plan unraveled and that's when he attacked paul pelosi 3 times hitting him on the head with a hammer. paul pelosi suffered a fractured skull, woke up in a pool of his own blood and still recovering from his injuries. he was ultimately convicted last year of attempted kidnapping of a

federal official and an assault on immediate member of a federal official and the maximum sentence for that 50 years. as you mentioned, they're looking for 10 fewer years for that. now, i can tell you this is just one part of his problem. tip app also faces trial is yet to begin in the state courts. and after that, immigration officials also want him as well because he's actually a canadian resident in the united states in 2008 on a six-month visa and he overstayed his visa. so at the time of the attack, he never should have been in the country in the first place. we will be in court when the sentencing be ken's. and we will try to tell you before the end of our 10 o'clock newscast, how much time he will spend federal prison. back to okay. we'll go back to you later. thanks a lot. we'll. >> it is 704. and in the east bay, a multi-vehicle crash killed at least one person early this morning. chp says this crash happened on eastbound 5.80, right near grand avenue. the off-ramp

there about 12, 20 in the morning. one of the cars overturned near the center divide. police did not release any details yet of the person who died. but we do all lanes of that highway eastbound at the exit. their grand were closed due to the crash. >> the chp and they were is looking for a driver who struck and killed a man on wednesday night near 80 lewelling boulevard west of embers. way. the driver took off. police are looking for the vehicle. we don't have a description at this point. the car that want to find. all right. another big story that we're following this morning. pro palestinian demonstrators may now be facing a number of new charges. that's they were arrested last night. >> for occupying a vacant building at uc berkeley. well, which berkeley owns kron four's. dan thorn has details. >> pro-palestinian protesters facing off with a large number of police outside of the and ahead building near uc

berkeley. officers had just cleared out another group of protesters who are occupying the abandoned space thursday night. at least a dozen of those people were taken away in handcuffs. they're now possibly facing charges of vandalism, trespassing and destruction of property. just a day earlier, police had called the takeover of the vacant building a crime scene. beyond the police barriers, people chanted to free palestine, a recent graduate of uc berkeley says he's all for the protests but was not fully on board with this occupation. i mixed opinions about this, but i'm proposing, you know, i think they're doing a good, good work here, michael. the investments mission they have going at one point, protesters did get close with officers trying to move the perimeter back, but it did not escalate from there. that was dan thorn reporting. >> now, as we said, this is near the campus. this not the sproul hall occupation that

happen for about 3 weeks. the university made deal with those protesters and they cleared that out its they say that these other protesters, there are different groups. they're not connected. >> in the north bay at sonoma state, students and faculty now sorting things out after the university's president went rogue and made a deal with protesters without checking first with his bosses. now been placed on administrative leave. the chancellor of the csu system says its president, mike lee's agreement was made without the appropriate approvals. that agreement included an academic boycott of israeli universities and some of the students. we spoke with their at sonoma state support. the president's agreement. they think his punishment is unfair. >> i support the president and on the green months against genocide. kind of crazy. how a statement about lake ending genocide is like. crazy, crazy thing that has put someone on leave.

>> well, student activist groups said the agreement played out in a three-page letter was a win for them. but it's clearly controversial and some see it as anti-semitic. >> the nature of the program being in southwest asia, north african studies was made without consulting with subject matter. experts in the middle east of whom i consider myself. one of them is done a really good job up until now as president. i think that he did not handle this this situation. well, but i personally would hope you'd be given another chance. >> it's unclear how long president lee will be on leave. graduation is scheduled for tomorrow at 707. and the university of california is now responding. >> to uc workers who voted to authorize a strike. the union says those workers voted to strike because they believe that the campuses mishandled the demonstrations that happened on various campuses. specifically this protest at ucla. they've been like what happened there, melissa mattel, the associate vice president of the statewide labor relations for the university of california, says that this strike the employees

is illegal. she says, quote, uaw decision to strike over non labor issues violates the no strike clause of their contracts with uc and sets a dangerous and far-reaching precedent that social political and cultural issues no matter how valid are now that are not labor related can support a labor strike. it's 708, right now. and oakland's mayor is talking with kron 4 about how she says her city is continuing to fight crime. yes, and making some progress. also gave us an update on the struggle with dealing with the problem of homelessness. >> kron catherine heenan explains. >> people are accepting housing. the mayor talked about the fact that in the latest count, homelessness grew by 9% in oakland. those numbers released just this week, but at least the rate is slowing down. 9% does not sound as drastic. when you consider the city's homeless population grew. 47% from 2017 to 2019. and 24% between 2019

and and so this 9% increase is actually a significant success shows that we are, you know, closing some of these >> homelessness issues. of course, there's still so much to be done. i we can walk out the streets still see encampments. and so that's our job is never done until everyone is brought inside in our streets. a and clear of encampments. >> she says oakland is working on making modular housing permanent and that federal housing help is coming in forms that are easier to when i advocate at the federal level for a voucher ys, we're advocating for playspace voucher so that it's easier for people to redo bc the section 8 vouchers that they don't have to go and find it. >> a land where that would take it that it's attached to housing units. as for the improved crime numbers recently released one number not being celebrated is the

you're seeing that over san francisco right now here at the embarcadero. pretty much business as usual. little bit of morning gray followed by what will be some afternoon sunshine for pretty much everyone. but the immediate coastline, high pressure ridge still sitting out there to the west. it's not built up directly overhead. so that impact of high pressure warming things up is not immediately felt for us, but it is sending the jet to the north and that is contributing to our dry forecast. so mild, dry and steady. that's the way we'll continue to go this weekend. little bit of fog towards the coast this afternoon. sunshine elsewhere. another push of that westerly breeze pushing inland that fog and cool gray into tomorrow morning having that moderating effect on temps all the way through the weekend. now, today's daytime highs will remain cool in the city for bay to breakers on sunday. that is going to feel so good. good, jogging weather. well, temperatures elsewhere in the 60's to 70's hardly even in 80 in today's forecast, which does make today just a little cooler than yesterday, south

>> another day, another data breach. here's a letter att recently sent to customers saying their information was released on the dark web. so when we say things like it saying you cannot be removed from the 18 t data breach because tens of thousands of people have it now because it's published only is that easily downloadable planning. troy hunt runs a website called have i been it's a way to check if your personal information and passwords have been exposed. as of tonight is 767,000 bridges in including leaks from facebook. adobe, linkedin, dropbox and more. problem is when your password is exposed in a breach, hackers try to use it to log into other websites. mask order might add. it's time really, really volumes and suddenly because used to pass cross someone's now into social media council, whatever else it might be, we've few

>> we're back at 7.25. and if you hire these 3 men for roofing work over the last year, you might have been scammed. san mateo police are looking for possible victims of these 3. >> they say the group posed as contract workers and overcharged elderly residents for unfinished and likely and necessary work. police say the suspects used at least 2 different names for their companies. at one point they went by statewide roofing and siding. they also advertise themselves as roofing and masonry. the first reported scam happened in november of last year. the most recent one, was just this past. may all 3 men have been put down to the san mateo county jail. pickleball and tennis players in san francisco might soon have to pay a find fee $5 to reserve some courts in the city. park officials voted wednesday night to require that fee when people make an online reservation at 28 of the 55 courts that they have available. you can find a full list of those courts on our website at kron 4 dot com. the fee plan will go before the city's board of supervisors

like we have been seeing and we are going to be looking at a day today that is bringing a few more of those green mornings. let's take a look at where we're sitting above the east bay hills currently. and as you can see from the berkeley hills camera in a second here, anyways, that we are looking at a little bit of cloud cover overhead. now temperatures are going to rise very slowly under this low gray that we are seeing across the region, winds from the coastline, from the west pushing on into the bay area around 15 miles per hour. not quite as breezy as yesterday was 50's for current temperatures before an afternoon generally spent in the 70's alameda in redwood city at 55 while oakland in dublin at 54 right now. later today, little cooler than yesterday. less 80's on the map. in fact, hardly any of us actually even getting up to the 80's later on right now. all right, john, thank you for that. friday. light is always my favorite time of the week. >> we do have a whole lot of congestion out there. we started off with a few issues last hour, but now we look good bay bridge. 15 minutes. you can see traffic no longer

>> when you know a boiled over cops got the call requesting to check on the elderly woman yesterday evening. they were met at the door by the woman's 57 year-old son when additional officers arrived. he tried to stop them from. >> checking the residence to check the welfare of that's when altercation ensued to try to move to physically block them from getting to doorway. officers conducted sweep of residents founder deceiving. >> she was a very nice lady. rhea vista. police ended up arresting the sun on suspicion of homicide. he's identified as jeffrey 8. nick seen here on the megan's law website. he is a convicted offender. in my experience as a veteran law enforcement officer. >> normal people do not kill their mothers. it's a very mitch. violent crime. it's it's one of the, you know, still one of the worst murders you can do the killing of of a

parent or child. there are many unanswered questions as to why and how this happened. but chief john maser says the investigation is active and under way. >> he commended the victims, neighbors for getting involved and contacting them. this came to light because we had some concern. neighbors. >> those neighbors called us to investigate and had they not done that, this could have potentially gone completely undetected. things may have transpire. where would have been almost impossible for us to know what happened. i'm not afraid to to step up fun. see what needs to be done. you know, there's no harm. asking for help. you either get it. and something works out. are there's a good result? you know, either either way and have something have to be to

growing niche. attics kron, 4 news. >> well, in the east bay, one person has died after a triple shooting in richmond. it happened on may. 11th and pullman avenue right near carlson boulevard. richmond police said they had reports of a shooting and when they responded, they found 3 people at the scene. one died. no word on the condition of the other victims. but police are now looking for suspects. >> 31 year-old lay threat man, a suspected of assaulting his girlfriend last month in san leandro has now been charged. this happened on april 19th on hosley avenue in san leandro. police found her with injuries to her face and she told the police that he held her against her will and also sexually assaulted her. he was arrested by undercover detectives in fremont and they say he confessed during an interview. now he will face charges >> well, a man who was hit and killed by suspected drunk driver in fremont earlier this

month has been identified. he was identified as 26 year-old tony la of oakland. he was hit and killed on may 3rd on fremont boulevard. the driver who hit him was from sunnyvale. that person ended crashing into a traffic pole and arrested for suspected dui. the victim's family has put together a gofundme campaign to cover funeral costs. he leaves behind his pregnant wife and 3 children. this is the first traffic fatality in fremont this year. >> time now 7.35. and we now know the identity of the man who was killed while riding an e-bike in hayward. it was 22 year-old say rahm dollop, holly, he's from hayward and he was writing in the e-bike on may 8th near mission boulevard when he was struck by a vehicle and taken to the hospital. he ended up passing away 2 days later, he was a graduate student from india who was pursuing his master's degree in computer science at cal state east bay. this is the 4th fatal collision in hayward this year. it's 7.36,

cent. people used to work at an oakland hotel are going rally today. get this. they're demanding they get their pay, that they are last october. the radisson hotel a was found to have committed wage theft against more than 120 workers and found to have been withholding $400,000. the oakland apartment of workplace, an employment standards ordered the hotel to compensate the employees. but the workers say they haven't seen a dime yet. they're going to be rallying at the radisson hotel, oakland airport on any sav, a new and at 1 o'clock this afternoon. >> well, at least one san francisco city supervisor is pushing back on those plans to bring giant pandas to the city this week supervisors discussed how they were going to pay for the care and transportation of those animals. mayor london breed previously asked the group to pass a resolution that would allow various city departments to start raising money from private entities. but supervisor and candidate for mayor joseph aiea argue that

the money going towards animals is less useful than funding programs that would help youth and the unhoused. >> so this is about prioritizing our future. this is about prioritizing our children over pandas. and if we can rally to fund a home for pandas, we certainly can rally to raise money for essential programs that impact every single corner of this city. >> hope and a fundraising efforts wouldn't begin until at least mid-june at the earliest. there's still no timeline on when those pandas would arrive in san francisco. >> for the so those are the stuff out. they can raise my everybody state lawmakers are trying to figure out with pieces of legislation move on right now and which ones are going to die. yeah. let's get the latest on where things stand with capitol correspondent eytan wallace. >> well, just take a look at all of these pages featuring a list of bill after bill after bill that got taken up. as you can imagine, lawmakers whose bills made it through say they're relieved while others, his bills faced a different outcome, say they're disappointed. haha.
