station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning far. >> good morning. thank you for joining us here on the kron. 4 morning news at 05:00am. it's monday. may 20th. i'm james fletcher in for reyna harvey at this early hour we've got john started things off here in the weather center as we take a look at the week ahead and what you think, john. yeah, looking pretty good. we're keeping a lot of this weather that we've gotten used to lately unimpeded just going through the rest of the week. >> does get a little bit warmer, though. and today you'll notice temperatures climbing just a couple of degrees from yesterday. looking outside at the golden gate bridge. just the faintest view of a little bit of fog right along the coast. most of us are crystal clear. so fog, not much of a concern this morning. winds generally out of the north and west and not too much of a factor at the coast. we do have some breezy conditions up in the north bay mountains, but overall not dress of lee. windy day either. so today is going to be comfortable warm and pretty sunny pretty early on temperatures right now. we're in the 40's for santa rosa

down through timber on napa on over to point rays. well, 50's for most of the rest of us later on today. daytime highs will rise into the 60's at the coast. 70's to low 80's for the rest of the bay. temperatures are going nice and comfortable this afternoon. skies nice and clear. nice morning commute in the midst of it. certainly so far this morning, only 7 minutes across the bay bridge, san mateo bridge at 12 san mateo bridge at 12 minutes. if you richmond, sandra fell, good news. highway 37 construction have that closed overnight is back open. so now you have 2 options to get you over from the east bay or solano county on over into the north bay. that should, help things a little bit at the richmond center fell golden gate bridge at 19 minutes to make your crossing there. james. all right. thank you very much, john. in the south bay police shoot the gunman leaving him with life-threatening injuries in san jose. >> 4 o'clock in the afternoon on kolmar drive right near ryan stem academy. police were responding to calls of a person who was actively firing

a firearm. that suspect was then approached to by police. there was an exchange of gunfire. no officers were shot, but that gunman was taken to the hospital life-threatening injuries. we're following the story this morning. so stay tuned for more updates. the sonoma county sheriff's department has arrested a man in connection with the fatal shooting of a 2 year-old child in lake county. it happened back in march. 23rd in clear lake about 71 miles north of petaluma clearlake police issued a warrant for 31 year-old fernando lugo garcia luego garcia was arrested in petaluma last tuesday by the sonoma county sheriff's department and transported to the lake county jail with no bail set just yet. the man accused of attacking paul pelosi at his san francisco home in 2022. will be re-sentenced later this month. the pap received a 30 year prison sentence last friday. the federal court says it didn't give pap the dip at the chance to make a statement, which is a requirement for federal criminal procedures

before sentencing, prosecutors notified the court after noticing the mistake, the error is unlikely to affect his 30 year sentence. but it does give him the chance to ask leniency. the hearing resumes may 28th the path is still facing separate state charges. jury selection is scheduled for in that case this wednesday. more than 21,000 people participated in san francisco's annual bay to breakers race over the weekend. you see them here in costume every year. people dress in fun costumes to make their way across the city to the ocean and kron four's. sara stinson was there. >> thousands of people woke up early sunday for bay to breakers. race is 113 year-old tradition in san francisco. you know, i think it's probably one of the longstanding traditions in san francisco participants gathered on main street around 8 in the morning to walk jog

and run to ocean beach on the other end of the city. they like super positive energy. it's his first is yeah, it was fantastic time. definitely saw all of san francisco come together. a lot of clock ticked rooms, the costumes at the quirky 12 k run never disappoint this san francisco couple. gina and brad dressed up as hot dogs. we money and really recognizable really ran the whole race. and everyone was dog and my kids than ever. and it's just plain that these girls dressed up as the inflatable tube man. often people dress up in group costumes, whether it be traffic cones or minions was really fun. everyone came out out it's a super >> yeah, really good vibe. lots of partying on the side. bay to breakers at its peak used to be the largest road race in the world with 100,000 people participating. race director kyle buyers says they're starting to see

registration numbers rebound from the pandemic. 21,000 people registered this year, which is after back, you know, 20% from last year. so not quite. >> pre-pandemic numbers yet, but definitely trending in the right direction. meyer says they work to ensure everyone is safe while having fun with alcohol checkpoints along the route and patrols. yeah, we have our own private security companies and then we work with very, very closely with sfpd crews could be seen cleaning up as people continue to party in the panhandle. >> need ow. and everyone was dancing and having that have these long-standing traditions are all about celebrating vibrant city. i fell in love with it. when i moved here, i just think it's one of those things that just kind of brings the city together. we're giants fans and there was a dodger fan that we made friends list. so if you can one thing to breakers is that it brings people together. i'm sara stinson reporting in san francisco kron. 4 news. >> well, after the race, san

francisco's oldest musical band performed at the music concourse in golden gate park. take a listen. and dozens showed up to enjoy the free concert by the golden gate park band, which was founded, by the way, back in 18, 82 and every year and hosts a six-month long summer concert series. today, the band played fun songs inspired by people participating in the bay to breakers. >> do a program called a cast of characters where each piece kind of represent interesting character like the characters, too. in the bay to breakers like the funny outfits costumes. >> well, if you'd like to see this historic bamba summer concert series goes until october 6th performing every sunday. also in the news here at 507, palo alto. police now investigating another robbery of a mail carrier. >> postal inspectors say this happened thursday just before noon in the parking lot of the

southwood apartments on middlefield road. police say the postal service worker, man in his 60's was delivering mail when 2 men approached him and demanded his postal keys wallet and his phone. the postal worker turned over the keys, but he refused to give up his personal items and that's when police say a fist fight ensued and the suspect not the victim to the ground, injuring him. police now looking for those 2 men who took off in. apparently they both drove off an older model. nissan ultimas. in the east bay, 6 people in antioch now recovering after a car crash on highway 4. so this happened right near the delta gateway boulevard area at about 2 o'clock or so on saturday, the collision forced all westbound lanes to shut down contra costa fire says 6 people were rushed to the hospital. no word yet on their conditions. the man was rescued after being thrown from his car that went over a cliff off the sonoma coast. so the crash happened yesterday morning in the jewel gulch myers grade.

that's an area just off highway one near jenner. us know the county sheriff's office says a ranger found the car about 200 feet down from the roadway with only a large tree, stopping it from rolling any further down the cliff. they say the ranger didn't find anybody in the car. so crews started searching the area nearby to see if anybody had been injected. they say after about 45 minutes, crews found the man lying in the patch of brush at the bottom of the tree. about 350 feet from the crash site. the sheriff's office says the man was hurt and was flown to the hospital, but miraculous lee is expected to be okay. well, quite a sight for a family in the south bay. a mountain lion caught on home security video prowling through jose yard. take a look. this is from around 5.30, saturday morning. and there you see it right there on the fence that mountain lion perched up there looking around the big cat took a little look and then eventually walked off. and that's pretty much all there was to makes another job. but

this time on to some bamboo hedges, you'll see there. he goes. the homeowner, tom blackburn says he's lived in that neighborhood in the mount hamilton foothills for more than 30 years. and he's never seen anything like this. >> this is actually the first one. we've we get a lot coyotes and what a deer. but this is the first mountain lion we've kind of amazing. i mean, if you look in the video, he's just percy is so you just what you know just when he's walking or jumping you to sleep, some you know, just just amazing that how they can move around like a >> heather balance is incredible. blackburn says his family has a german shepherd and 4 house cats. they're all going to be keeping a very close eye on now going forward. also says he's going make sure to have a noise maker with him for those early morning walks well, the state bill that would have scrutinized a new electricity charge for californians apparently will not be moving

forward. the assembly appropriations committee killed the measure on friday. the public utilities commission led by governor newsom's appointees approved a new fixed rate charge of $24.15 last week in exchange for that new fee, though customers will be getting a lower rate for their electricity. california's power rates are the second highest in the nation. the new fee sparked outrage, which is why the bill was introduced in the first place. the committee didn't explain why they killed it, though. well, sad morning for raider nation. mister rader himself, jim auto died yesterday. the hall of fame center joined the team for his first for its first season in american football league. back in 1960, he never missed a game competing in 210 consecutive regular season games and 308 straight total contests despite undergoing 9 operations on his knees during his playing career. was 86 years old. still ahead on the

morning comes after sacramento. firefighters rescued a man who fell out of a kayak yesterday and the american river crews say the incident happened just south of ansel hoffman park. they found that man not wearing a life vest holding on to a branch in the middle of the river. the rescue boat assisted him to shore. nobody was hurt. and with memorial day just around the corner, triple a is projecting more than 42 million americans will be driving. that's a 7% increase since 2022, which was the most since the pre-pandemic era. aaa says drivers should give themselves extra time and the bottle rock music festival rubble turn to napa valley. this friday. megan, thee stallion pearl jam jared are headlined the festival music festival runs from friday through sunday. so be prepared for extra traffic in the north bay. >> 5.15, let's find out what things look like on the weather front for any sort of concerts this weekend if you're going. good morning, john yapp bottle rockets going to be perfect. definitely not too hot up there in napa this

upcoming weekend. so hey, that is going to be welcome because, you know, can be toastie. sometimes this time of year this morning, we've got relatively clear skies, not talking a lot of fog making your quite our view. looks really nice and clear. little bit of fog just right on tara, other than that, we are pretty good to go. high pressure to the west of us is going to build in more and more towards the middle of the week. and we are in free, very gradual warming trend temperatures tomorrow. little bit warmer than today. today's daytime highs already a little warmer than yesterday was now skies are going to stay pretty clear today. just a little touch of fog at the coastline this morning. but actually a pretty clear what the coast later on today tomorrow morning. do expect that onshore breeze during morning lours to cool you down during overnight. but temperatures will rise to our warmest of this week's forecast both tomorrow and on wednesday in the meantime, today does look similar to yesterday. little bit warmer. lot of 60's at the coastline today. that's going

make today nice day to head out to the coast. temperatures along the bay shore, mostly in the 70's seeing carlos through palo alto. it 75 south bay temperatures near 80 degrees. not quite getting there, though. same for the east bay. most areas hanging out in the 70's hayward at 73 oakland, 72 concord, one of our few spots along with antioch, pittsburgh, up to vacaville and napa that will barely hit the low 80's for your daytime highs. let's get you look ahead. so today is going to be back into the low 80's for some of our daytime highs after this. daytime highs rise a little bit further into the mid 80's come tuesday. we're back down after that and towards the weekend for bottle rock in particular, expect some 70's for inland areas such as napa roadways are doing. okay. here's a look at the bay bridge. 8 minutes to make your crossing. they're pretty clear skies overhead. as for the san mateo bridge, 13 minutes, that's the limit right there. so you're doing just fine as you make your crossing. the richmond, sandra fell as well as the golden gate are also moving along just fine. james. thank you.

5.17, the time and a shortage of animal veterinarians is forcing shelter, sadly, to put down dogs and cats. >> the survey by the san francisco spca shows a 33% increase in the euthanasia rates of healthy animals at local shelters. the vet emergency group in san ramon is looking at how animal hospitals and shelters can work together. increase the number of vets. >> giving them that that don't just, you know, why on being on the floor giving them all of life. amenable schedules, things like that can all help. >> yeah. veterinary emergency group also started a program called little vets which teaches kids about what it's like to become a veterinarian. well, a new study found that san jose is the top city for small businesses. the analysis done by financing company biz to credit. look at annual revenue credit scores and the

age of businesses from 2023 to determine the winner. and the study found that san jose had 66,000 businesses and employed more than 430,000 workers. the city jumped up from being ranked number 7 last year. san francisco was ranked second on that list. college students are getting ready now to walk the stage in the south bay. san jose state is set to hold its graduation ceremony this coming wednesday. the commencement will take place at the provident credit union event center. and this comes as many colleges decided to cancel or change their commencement ceremonies because of ongoing protests on campus. for the last week. students at san jose state camped out on campus is part of those nationwide college protests. the nonprofit group faith food fridays in vallejo is struggling to meet demand and support local families. kron four's philippe gaulle has their story. >> every little bit helps neighbors dropping off food donations. corporations offering cash, volunteers giving their and a dedicated

committed to fighting hunger. f% in vallejo. it's only the community driving this and and supporting it. that makes it happen. mary and dogs and her husband, benjamin co-founded faith, food fridays in 2011. >> the non profit accepts donation drop-offs and offers volunteer opportunities. 7 days a week at its pantry on salon away. it hosts food, distributions 3 times a week giving out at least 10,000 pounds of food. on those days, we would never in our entire history. you run out of food after distribution. and we've done that consistently for the last 4 months eggs says it has been a struggle lately. keeping the refrigerators school and even the lights turned because donations all around are down. despite the demand for services jumping at least 50% since the start of the pandemic monetarily and food supplies. plus, we well, a lot of volunteers behind me,

but we need more faith food, fridays partners with the food bank of contra costa in-salon serving as a distributor. the organization also provides groceries to homeless vallejo city unified school district's students to keep them fed when schools closed school district academic support providers here logan pix, the food every week and the 2 of them look forward to it. and it's not just because they receive a bad, but i believe because it does them. >> and help them over the weekend volunteers say their work is fulfilling safina way donates her time every friday. i think that we're doing a good job, but we have a very nice >> women, especially women. and of course, we do come into in a. >> we quote in a well, we get food you know, from individuals lemmons off their anything you know, if you're clearing out your pantry as long it's not will take will

we're back at 5.25. in the north bay, a man has been arrested now on suspicion of driving under the influence in connection with a hit and run crash in petaluma. >> the crash happened on east washington street just after 1 o'clock in the morning on sunday. police say the crash involved 2 cars and the man and a woman were injured in that car. when officers arrived on scene, they say they saw different man now identified as frank monticello running into the creek. that runs between east washington street and maria drive. they

say a resident told them that monticello was hiding in their backyard and then jump the fence. but officers say they eventually found him hiding in the creek. police arrested him on multiple charges. in the east bay. the chp arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal hit and run in san leandro. police say a driver hit and killed someone wednesday night. they say the victim was found lying in the street are willing boulevard and embers way. police say they later found the car wanted in connection with this incident on friday, the suspect was booked into the santa rita jail. bail now set at $225,000. on the peninsula. daly city police arrested a woman for stealing money from an old navy cash register. police say the theft happened inside the serramonte shopping center early this month. they say the woman through the cash register on the ground several times until it broke open. the woman then stole nearly $300 before running off. she was later detained by an hour at a nearby store. police arrested and booked on charges robbery.

look at that. all eastbound lanes of the bay bridge had to be closed for hours saturday after a crash fire broke out on your. island incident held up traffic in both directions as crews are working to put out the flames. fire boats. as you can see, were used to help but doused the fire from the water. crews say saturday strong winds made that fired a little difficult to put out, but they eventually did. we'll take a break here at 5.26. up next on the kron 4 morning news san jose police shot a man who allegedly was firing a gun. >> near schools will have the >> near schools will have the latest in a live report. >> we are back 5.29. the time. let's get a check of the weather here at the half hour with john shrable on this monday morning. when you see out there, john. things are pretty bright so far, james, we're starting to get a little hint of light and not a lot of fog. so we're going to be seeing a morning that actually bring some good sunshine all the way up to the coastline with visibility doing just fine in most areas. kind of a nice note for coastal areas that can be really fogged in this time of year. little breezy up in the north bay mountains. but most of the rest of us are really calm. so again, a nice way to start the workweek. nothing too much to be worried about. so far 40's to 50's for current temperatures petaluma and santa rosa at 46, oakland and alameda at 53 degrees right now. later on today, you'll notice daytime highs just a little bit warmer than yesterday. lot of us rising into the 70's a few low 80's for inland areas. roadways

right now are also doing okay. good news for early risers is there is no backup in the least of the bay bridge. again, those bright skies there in the distance. a welcome sight for your monday. start san mateo bridge at 12 minutes here at the limit. there things are nice at the richmond. sandra fell with just the faintest hint of fog at the golden gate. absolutely. nothing blocking out visibility. all right, john, thank you. 5.30, the time developing news out of the south bay police shoot and critically injured. a man in san jose kron four's michael thomas on the scene for us with more on what exactly happened. michael. >> what we know now is that no san jose police officers were injured in this shooting, but that man who was opening fire remains in the hospital this morning with life-threatening injuries. take a look. this is a map up on your screens. you can see exactly where it happened. it happened yesterday afternoon at around 4 o'clock in east san jose on comer drive. now it's just near the intersection of story road in capitol expressway.

and we have some video that we can put on your screen you can see what the scene looked like. you can see there was multiple police units there outside of an apartment complex. police say they received calls about a man who was actively shooting a firearm after arriving. that is exactly what they found out. that man was shot by san jose police causing life-threatening injuries. he was taken to a nearby hospital and remains there this morning. his firearm was obtained by police and the investigation is still ongoing. as of now, we have not gotten any information on the suspect. however, police are expected to hold a press conference at some point today. back out here live as we get more information regarding the suspect and what may have caused the situation will keep you updated as very latest san jose michael thomas will send it back to live in the studio. michael, thank you at 5.32. from san jose. now to the north bay where police are investigating >> woman who was shot to death. so police say they found 2 victims, a man and a woman both shot on redwood parkway at about 11 o'clock saturday night. >> that woman died at the

scene. the man was taken to the hospital. he's expected to survive the names of the victims haven't been released just yet. the motive in the circumstances. they're also still under investigation. well, in the east bay, antioch, police now have identified a man who was found dead last week. officers say they were called to a sidewalk on country hills drive to help someone possibly needing medical attention. police say they found the body of 48 year-old raheem co lying there. he how he died is still under investigation. police have not said if he was the victim of foul play, but we'll keep you updated. meanwhile, a call for help in oakland this morning after historic church was damaged in a fire kron. four's theresa stasi has the story. >> numb to the >> experience. >> you deal with that a lot and consoling people that went through it. when that happens to you really? in the moment to you don't have emotions

can. >> processing. >> pastor robert lacey junior says in a flash, everything is changed. >> his church, a historic landmark with a focus on helping people now desperately needs assistance. pastor lacey says last friday a massive fire broke out at saint andrews missionary baptist church in oakland. he was inside with others praying before choir rehearsal. >> it started to get hot. in the building and they but i will open the windows is kind of warm. and here. >> and we're in the choir. stand the years. that's where the fire started. and the house next door to church. open up one of the windows in the sanctuary. and i heard the fire crackling and popping >> pastor lacey says that he and a parishioner grabbed fire extinguishers, but the flames were fears. i spoke with

pastor lacey as he returned from getting food for workers clearing the burned debris. >> westerly shares of the church is an historic landmark. fact, the history of the church. >> 1916, it was built. by the african american episcopal church. to provide support for earthquake victims of san francisco in 19. 0, 6, and it has always been. community service center. >> he and each day they help the community with meals. and we're gearing up to help west oakland residents with a summer lunch program for children. the building is restricted for use temporarily faster. lacey says that they want to rebuild and continue to serve the community. pastor lacey says that they helped service outside in the parking lot last weekend. >> they have set up a gofundme account, but it will take a lot to recover. >> our engineers actually looking at the project and there they're in the hundreds

of thousands. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. >> theresa kron, 4 news. >> 5.35 is the time a california highway patrol canine sniffed out more than 500 grams of fentanyl during a traffic stop in san francisco. chp says and officer stopped a driver for mechanical oiolation near westbound 80 last week. police detained the driver for not having a license and that's when the officers canine partner smell the drugs in the car. so thanks to the dog. the chp says they seized more than 500 grams of fentanyl 150 grams of meth. 73 grams of heroin and 80 grams of xanax. the driver was booked into jail on multiple drug charges. worldwide. travel warning now for the lgbtq+ community. the u.s. state department says the people traveling overseas should exercise caution because of potential terrorism kron four's dan thorn. now he spoke with local organizations about this. >> the u.s. state department issuing a global security alert friday warning of

say support the latest recommendations now for the 33 mile rail segment connecting anaheim, 2 los angeles. that clears the way now for environmental review, which is expected to take more than a year to finish. construction is already underway on 119 mile stretch of that rail line through the central valley. aaa is projecting more than 42 million americans will be driving this memorial day weekend. that's a 7% increase over numbers we saw last year or actually in 2022, nearly 3 million more people will be on the roads this year compared to last year with triple a saying this will be the most people on the road since before the pandemic. they predict nearly 2 million people will be flying or taking a train. so if you are hitting the roads are flying, give yourself a lot of time. you're going to be in the midst of a lot of company. all right. the sacramento county sheriff's office is now increasing enforcement on rivers and lakes this summer with the goal of patrolling 300 miles of waterways.

officials are reminding everybody that you have to have a life jacket on for each person on board a boat and kids under 12, they have to wear a life vest at all times when they're near the water. i should say it's illegal for people on a boat to drink alcohol, but not the driver. i should say. the people passengers on the boat can, but the driver cannot. another important thing to keep in mind with the current snow melt. the water is going to be a little colder. then during the summer months. so that might shock you as you jump in. >> the 100 degrees outside. but the water can still be 57 degrees, which which is pretty shocking on the enough exposure could potentially cause hypothermia >> yeah, this warning comes as sacramento firefighters rescued a man who fell out of a kayak yesterday afternoon and american river crews say the incident happened just south of encinal hoffman park when they got there. crews say they found him not wearing a life vest, clutching to a branch in the middle of the river. the rescue boat was able to get back to shore.
