. an east bay street riddled with bullet holes, after police say two men got out of a car and opened fire, striking an 8- year-old girl. tonight, a plea from neighbors to make their community safer. >> it's not safe to sit on your porch, not safe to walk out in the street, ain't even safe to drive down the street. good evening. i'm ken wayne. heather is off tonight. the little girl was playing in her yard last night with her brother when she was shot. we have new details from ktvu's paul chambers, live in oakland's children's hospital with an update. >> reporter: the little girl had surgery last night. however, hospital officials tell me they are not allowed to release her condition. that is because that's what the family requested. i will tell you people living in her community are sending prayers her way and they are very concerned about last night's shooting. >> like what the hell's going

on? >> reporter: this woman who asked we call her barbara has lived on 26th avenue for 28 years. she is shocked and startled that a drive-by happened in her neighborhood. >> i thought it was fire crackers. >> reporter: just before 6:00 last night, a light-colored car was driving southbound near flora. the car stopped midway and two men got out, fired several rounds before leaving the scene. the bullet struck an 8-year-old in the neck as she played with her brother. another bullet struck a man in his forties or fifties in the hip a few houses away. he is expected to survive. >> when i looked outside, i saw them holding their little girl in their arms, because she was, you know, had gotten shot. i looked this way and there was a man laying in my neighbor's yard who had also got shot. >> reporter: today, we counted 17 bullet holes, several striking the house, including two in the window and one through this fence. that bullet might have been the one that struck the 8-year-old child. >> they needed to declare martial law in oakland. >> reporter: this woman used to

live on this block. this morning she rushed over after hearing about the shooting. she was afraid her brother was injured because he still lives in the area. >> they become, like, hostages in their own house. it's not safe to sit on your porch, not safe to walk out in the street. ain't even safe to drive down the street. >> reporter: barbara also feels the same way. now she is counting her blessings. >> i'm thankful i wasn't in the living room. i probably would have been shot, too. >> reporter: oakland police have yet to release information about a suspect or possible motive. live in oakland, paul chambers, ktvu channel 2news. a san mateo county sheriffs water rescue team pulled several boaters out of the bay this afternoon. three vessels responded to a canoe that was sinking about a mile off coyote point. another canoe was trying to help. eight people were rescued in all and brought to shore. they were treatedded for minor injuries, including potential hypothermia. developing news and the wildfires still burning in disaig county. a new fire started today at

camp pendleton marine corps base. 8500 military personnel and their families were evacuated. some evacuations have been lifted tonight, as crews start to get a handle on this latest fire and what's been a very early and very destructive fire season. ten major fires in san diego county have now burned at least 39 square miles. six are still burning, but two of those are almost contained. scott thompson reports on the improving conditions today and the growing concern about what firefighters will face this summer. >> one of the most dramatic starts to fire season that i've seen. >> reporter: wildfires have ripped through southern california this week, forcing evacuations, destroying homes and businesses, but firefighters are turning the tide on the wildfires, thanks in part to a shift in the weather. >> the weather is on our side and i really feel, again, cautiously optimistic, that we'll turn the corner on these fires today. >> reporter: the santa ana winds diminished significantly friday. this, combined with cooler temperatures and increased humidity, has enabled firefighters to start

containing the blazes. residents are doing their part, too. former marine james harkens refused to let the fire destroy his home. >> the fire department was doing their job and the fire department left to go do something else, so i grabbed the hose and i kept everything wet down and so forth. >> reporter: at least four of the wildfires have been completely contained. despite the improving conditions, residents need to remain cautious. thousands of acres are still burning. >> the conditions are ripe for this season to be what they consider, again, one of the worst fire seasons ever. >> reporter: scott thompson, ktvu channel 2news. >> alameda county fire crews are among those that are on the fire lines. the department posted this picture on instagram, showing one of its trucks in the fire zone. bay area crews in san diego county include firefighters from livermore, pleasanton, fremont, heyward and oakland. fremont police say they will have extra patrols at a local elementary school next week, after a stranger danger

episode. police say a 10-year-old was walking home from hersh elementary school yesterday afternoon when a man sitting in a car on carroll avenue asked the little boy if he wanted a ride. the boy said he got scared and ran home. police say he described the stranger as a latino or indian man about 30 years old with black hair, styled in a spike. he was in an older blue four- door sedan. today, friends and family retraced the steps of a missing san francisco man. 19-year-old sean seedy was seen almost a year ago. his family said at the time he was recovering from a traumatic brain injury suffered during a fall. today, walkers retraced his last known route from the french international school on oak street to golden gate park to try to raise awareness and look for any sign of his whereabouts. former santa clara supervisor george shirakawa, jr. is out of jail. he was released may 9 after serving seven months of a year- long sentence on corruption

conviction. shirakawa served his time in dublin rather than in santa clara county because of his high profile. he pleaded guilty to charges that included misuse of public funds, spending some of that money on gambling and lavish meals. people in the east bay marched today to try to end poverty. ♪ >> the 9th annual march at lake merritt drew about 400 walkers. organizers say 12% of alameda county lives in poverty, including thousands of children in oakland. mayor jean quan noted that after 50 years, americans are still fighting the war on poverty, launched by president johnson. >> it's time for statewide solution, for regional solutions, to make sure every kid has an opportunity to do well in the booming economy of the bay area. >> march organizers are hoping that efforts to raise the minimum wage will help, but say poverty is a long-term problem that could take another generation to solve. thousands of new graduates

from uc berkeley are celebrating tonight. >> they and their families attended the ceremony this morning at memorial stadium. keynote speaker congresswoman nancy pelosi marveled at the difference in communication. >> every one of you has the power to make a tremendous, tremendous difference, with the ability to exchange ideas in realtime, instantaneously, just think of what you can accomplish, what progress, what change, how you can shape the future. >> pelosi urged the grads to have the courage to be disrupters. grads also heard from new chancellor nicholas dereks in his first commencement speech at cal. a california race horse is making history, winning the first two racings of the triple crown. >> california chrome has won the preakness! >> california chrome, the 3-

year-old is the first california-bred horse to win the preakness in baltimore since 1986. his trainer, 77-year-old art sherman, has strong ties to the bay area. in yuba city, where california chrome's coowners, the martins, live, it was a thrilling day. >> he's a california horse. he's the people's horse and we're proud, proud of him. >> two weeks ago, the colt won the kentucky derby. if california chrome wins the belmont stakes on june 7th, he would be the first winner of the elusive triple crown since 1978. one of the bay area's favorite human race traditions is just a few hours away now. tens of thousands of people are expected to attend tomorrow's bay to breakers foot race. organizers will be watching out for unauthorized runners and enforcing bans on large bags and alcohol. the race starts at 8:00 in the morning at main and howard streets in downtown san francisco and ends at ocean beach. bart is starting service earlier than usual tomorrow, at 6:00 a.m.

and running longer trains. you can visit our website at ktvu.com for more information on transit options and to find out what streets are closed. happening now, san francisco airport construction is under way on two of the airport's four run ways for safety upgrades. this is a live picture of sfo, where the work is being done. airport officials say those run ways will be closed during the construction project. it's expected to last about four months. sfo says the closure could cause minor flight delays of about 5 to 15 minutes. as if a major recall and a $35 million fine weren't enough, now owners of gm vehicles say they are having serious trouble getting that recalled part fixed. >> plus, startling evidence that a potentially deadly disease is now spreading in the u.s. what health officials are saying about a new case of mers. >> a bit cooler today across most of the bay area. coming up, the temperature change you can expect this your sunday forecast and when the slight chance of thunderstorms

. a search and rescue effort is under way in laos after a plane carrying government officials crashed this morning, claiming the lives of four senior leaders. among the dead, the deputy prime minister and the minister of public security. the two men are considered by many to be the most powerful people in the security apparatus of the ruling communist regime. the plane was en route from the capitol to a mountainous northeastern province for a military ceremony. about 20 people were said to be on board. it's not known how many people survived the crash or what caused the plane to go down. health officials reported a third case of mers in the u.s.

he is a business associate of the indiana man first diagnosed with the middle east respiratory syndrome after returning from the middle east. the indiana man recovered and is now out of the hospital. his associate tested positive, but is not sick. it's the first evidence that the disease has spread inside the u.s. mers can be deadly and has been found in 16 countries. a major cottage cheese recall is linked to a central valley manufacturing plant. kraft foods is recalling more than a million cases of cottage cheese sold under the nude send, breck stone, daily kraft and daily chef labels. customers can return them for a refund. there is a possibility the products could make people sick. new at 6:00, more fallout over that massive gm recall, as drivers learn it could take weeks to get their vehicles

fixed. in fact, here in the bay area, we learned that it could take up to a month to address the ignition issue that led to that recall. that's because dealerships are still working to get the right parts. ktvu's john sasaki spoke to one owner who said she is fed up. >> reporter: deja loves her car. >> it's terrific. >> reporter: but the chevy cobalt is one of millions of cars recalled by general motors because of faulty ignition switches. 13 deaths have been tied to the problem. >> i'm steamed! i'm really steamed. >> reporter: what's even worse, she can't get it fixed right now. >> i called them friday. what they told me is they have one dealership with 200 cars waiting for repair. another dealership said there were 300 cars. >> reporter: at fh daily

chevrolet, the salesmen say the parts aren't coming in quickly enough. >> the parts are back ordered. >> reporter: gm says if you feel unsafe behind the wheel, i talked to two dealerships today that said they would be happy to put you in a rental car until yours is fixed, paid for by general motors. >> anybody has concerns, they are worried, get a hold of your nearest chevy dealer. they are here to help you. >> reporter: hundreds of people are signed up to fix the ignition switch, but the parts are trickling in, leaving drivers waiting potentially for months. >> obviously you're on file to get the parts ordered. >> shouldn't take this long. i've already received two recall letters. they know they have a problem. they didn't gear up for parts. they aren't taking care of the problem. >> reporter: the dealers say they are getting the parts in as quickly as they can, but they can't say when everyone will be taken care of. i'm john sasaki, ktvu channel 2news. >> ktvu.com web team has posted a list of vehicles affected by that massive recall. you can just look under web

links. the family of one of the bart workers killed last autumn during a strike is suing bart. lawrence daniels and a coworker died when a train hit them. it had been repairing a dip in the tracks. bart is abused of allowing an inexperienced train operator to run the train without supervision. bart has yet to respond to the lawsuit. there was a cracked crowd in larkspur discussing changes for transit and development in marin county. the community meeting at redwood high school considered plans for possible homes, retail and offices, all near the future site of the smart train station at larkspur landing. the gathering was hosted by groups critical of developing the area near highway 101 in the marin country mart. >> i'm all for getting cars off the road, but i'm not for building high density homes that take water that we don't have in order to accomplish that. >> supporters say they believe new development, along with transit, can help reduce traffic congestion along sir francis drake boulevard.

the city is taking public comments on the traffic proposal until june 2. cal trans is warning drivers highway 101 will be closed tonight in both directions north of santa rosa for demolition work. the closure at airport boulevard starts at 10:00 p.m. crews will be tearing down the old highway overpass there. during closure, traffic will be detoured at fulton road and shiloh road. northbound lanes are set to reopen at 6:00 tomorrow morning. southbound lanes should open an hour later. let's check in on the weather now and see what mark tamayo has on the weather front. it's kind of, yeah, thouing going on special out there. >> meteorological term. >> hard to make this a die nam i go, exciting forecast. today we had cooler temperatures across the bay area, also cooler clouds as well, in addition to patchy fog. we have been cooling off from the heat a few days ago. heat advisory is long gone. 80s toward santa rosa and antioch. san francisco topped out at 61.

san jose, 72 degrees. on the satellite loop over the past six hours, a few clouds moving across the bay area right now, also another batch approaching cape mendocino. right now, partly to mostly cloudy skies, breeze kicking up as well. current numbers updated for the 6:00 hour showing you it is 58 degrees in san francisco. santa rosa, upper 70s. look at temperatures inland, cooling back down into the 60s to lower 70s. good sign that tomorrow, basically the same as today, could be cooler in a few spots. winds are really cranking up, especially out towards -- you see the numbers, but toward fairfield. that's a sustained wind, 26 miles per hour, gusting to 29 miles an hour, winds out of the southwest. and then south bay, not as much activity to show you. but the winds are still a factor towards san jose, with winds easily around 15 to 20 miles an hour. basically breezy across entire bay area, especially the coast and right around the bay. in fact, we'll take a look at our live camera toward the oakland estuary, still a few

high clouds moving across the region. for tomorrow, morning clouds. it will be cool to mild. then the extended forecast, it does feature a bit of a warming trend. bay to breakers tomorrow morning, starting out the day with patchy fog at 7:00 and 8:00, temperatures in the mid- 50s. then at 10:00, partly sunnies, 50s. upper 50s to around 60 degrees, winds picking up. overnight lows to start out your sunday morning will be in the upper 40s. santa rosa, napa, widespread 50s for san francisco, mountain view and in fremont. so here's the overall weather pattern. tomorrow, morning clouds out there with skies becoming partly cloudy, as this weather system moves in from the north and west, gusty winds as well. the sky will continue to move in from the north by monday and tuesday, thickening clouds on monday. with this, there is a chance, at least a slight chance of a thunderstorm developing up in the north bay. but basically across the entire region. that will be for late monday and into tuesday. so whenever you get a weather

pattern like this, fire danger, with the potential lightning strike, that's a real concern. it's a slight chance for now, but something to keep an eye on for the timeframe. clouds tomorrow morning, then you see clouds thicken into monday. activity up to the north this terms of showers. this forecast model, aggressive in bringing the showers to the bay area. for tuesday, there is a slight chance. forecast highs for tomorrow, mainly in the 60s to lower 70s. livermore, 73. san jose, forecast high of 71. sunnyvale, 70. san francisco, lower 60s. a look ahead at your five-day forecast with your weekend always in view, we thicken up the cloud cover on monday, slight chance of a shower on tuesday and temperatures warm up by wednesday and thursday. but ken, i did not like putting that thunderstorm icon on the five-day forecast because fire crews will not like that in the state. we'll have to keep an eye on it. >> rough start to the season already. thank you, mark. 2000 chinook salmon are heading out into the san francisco bay thanks to the efforts of bay area school

children. each year, the tiburon organization brings school children to release salmon to the ocean. after two or three years, they will return to their home waters to spawn. >> they will nowhere to go automatically. they have it embeddedded in their brain to go where they were born. >> these fish were raised by students at casa grande high school in petaluma. organizers say it gives children a stronger connection to the environment. former warriors head coach mark jackson has a new job. we'll tell you what it is. >> plus, california chrome, one step closer to history after today's preakness. sports is next.

. ceremony was held in the oakland hills today to remember the japanese american young men who fought and died for the u.s. during world war ii. on this armed forces day, surviving members of the 442nd regimental combat team gathered those to remember those who never made it home. the regiment spent four days in hand-to-hand combat with germans in 1944 to rescue a lost battalion from texas. >> we were on the front lines,

more than any other unit and our casualties were very high. it was a job. we didn't turn it down. we had to do it. >> the majority of the young men who served on the 440 and volunteered, even as many of their families were -- they received more medals for bravery than any other in u.s. military history. congratulations to them. joe fonzi is here to tell us about a great horse race today. >> horse racing has not had a triple crown winner since affirmed in 1978. since then, 11 horses have done what california chrome did today, win the kentucky derby and the preakness, the crown's first two legs. the call to the post in harmony today at pimlico. ♪ >> victor espinoza aboard california chrome, breaking cleanly from the third position as the 139th running of the preakness got under way.

as in the kentucky derby, chrome was third in the back stretch, then made a move. he took the lead heading for home and had to withstand the challenge getting to the wire. >> ride on curlin on the outside, trying to catch him! california chrome reaching for the wire! another 16th! on the outside, ride on curlin can't get him. california chrome has won the preakness! >> the highly favored california chrome holds on ride on curlin making northern california trainer 77-year-old art sherman a happy man. social inclusion was the show horse. in three weeks at the belmont stakes, california chrome will try to become just the 12th triple crown winner in history. former warrior coach mark jackson didn't stay unemployed long. there have been thoughts about how going to the knicks might be a good fit. that apparently is not happening. jackson has agreed to a multiyear deal to rejoin espn's lead broadcasting. he'll go right to work, joining
