um, only 30 minutes before the start time. so as you can imagine, very disappointing frustration after the storm prompts officials to call off a highly anticipated event in san francisco. >> so this is ktvu fox two news at 730. it was something that a lot of people had been preparing months for. nice to have you
7:31 pm
with me on this monday night. i'm heather holmes, but the rainy weather, well, it threw a big wrench in kaiser's annual running events in san francisco. a crystal bailey talked with those who were upset with the decision to cancel runners ready to race. >> despite a wet and windy morning on sunday, it was go time for the annual san francisco half marathon. >> we thought, okay, this is going to be really difficult with the wind and the rain unprotected, but we're still excited to do it. >> i had kind of already accepted the fact that it was going to suck until it was canceled. >> just 30 minutes before the start time. i had already woken up and a and like gotten ready and i was ready to go to the race. liza marinaro spent 12 weeks training, and after recovering from a health condition that limited her ability to exercise, this race meant a lot to her. this race felt like a really big milestone for me. ronald able says. he traveled from salt lake city for the race and spent money on hotels and flights, so he chose to run anyway, along with dozens of other runners.
7:32 pm
>> they were so like, determined to do it. >> according to registered runners, the cost of the half marathon varied from close to $100 to about $130, depending on when you registered for the ten k and five k races cost less. organizers told runners they will send a medal and a t shirt to participants in the coming weeks. >> a lot of us thought, we don't want a medal for a race that we didn't get to compete in, so i do hope that they reschedule it or at least give us enrollment to defer for next year as well. >> now, according to social media posts, it appears that the organizers was monitoring the weather throughout the week. they had made some changes to the route to accommodate those harsh conditions, but organizers did not send that final confirmation of cancellation until the morning of the race and people i spoke with say they haven't heard from organizers since. now, we did also reach out to the organization and did not hear back in time for our report. in san francisco, crystal bailey, ktvu, fox two news. >> yeah, and our crystal bailey there with beautiful ocean beach behind her, some on and off showers today. rosemary so has

7:35 pm
incidents with trees blocking roads or dragging down power lines. one tree crashed down onto a car in the excelsior district, city officials said. the power lines it pulled down were still energized and crews working through the night to remove trees that posed a hazard. >> i think that the people of san francisco, as well as our city workforce, really stepped up and responded to the occasion in, yes, this was all hands on deck. >> we had crews working around the clock as the mayor noted. we also had two contractors working with us. >> dpw says last year's harsh weather knocked down a lot of the weaker trees, so they didn't see as many trees come down this time around. the storm, though, did cause major power outages and a lot of damage at a number of schools around the bay area. class was canceled at the yerba buena high school in san jose. toppled trees littered that campus. two power poles out front were also damaged from the storm. seven schools with the east side union high school

district were also closed due to the loss of power and storm damage. pg and e says it's working closely with school districts, which are considered critical facilities. >> we are prioritizing getting power back on for schools for other critical customers who were impacted, and we will continue providing updates. however, this is a very dynamic situation. >> the san jose unified school district also hit hard with nine schools losing power. officials decided to keep all of the campuses open, though attendance was not mandatory. well, as we just heard pg and e really working hard to restore electricity to schools as well as homes and businesses that lost power due to the wind and rain. right now, about 278,000 customers are without power across california. here in the bay area, more than 130,000 homes and businesses are without electricity. the largest combined outages are in the north bay and south bay, where power is out to more than 90,000 customers and earlier today on the four, we spoke with pg and e

spokesman jeff smith about the areas that they are focusing on tonight. >> according to our records, this is the third biggest storm in pg e territory in history. so single day storm, i should say, right? in other words, you know, kind of 24 hour period. so um, you know, that was um, you know, there were some really, really heavy winds. we anticipated heavy winds, but certainly there's a really high volume of outages. and our, you know, we were prepared to deal with outages and get our crews out there to safely restore our customers. but certainly there is quite a high volume with this particular storm. >> pg and e also cautions that if you do come across a downed power line, stay away from it and give them a call right away. many people now dealing with major damage to their homes and properties after this latest storm. for more on what to keep in mind when it comes to filing an insurance claim, we spoke with carl sussman from the sussman insurance agency, so the best thing to do at this stage is first, be careful right. >> don't don't go out. don't try and fix things yourself. do
7:38 pm
whatever you can to prevent further damage. daca out everything you can with pictures and cameras, and file the claim with the insurance carrier right away to be sure that you're in the queue to be handled as soon as possible. >> mr. sussman goes on to explain that small things. there are some small things that people can do to prevent damage, which includes turning off your sprinkler systems. a lot of people don't think about that after they've been flooded. also, park your car wheels turned into the curb. that will prevent it from being carried away by high water, and you can track the weather anytime by downloading the ktvu weather app. it has an interactive radar as well as the important hourly forecast. you can also use it to send us your weather photos, and you may actually see them here on the air. the ktvu weather app is free for you to download. >> they were using whatever they have on hand. they were trying to help either the cashier because he was like, they don't want we don't want to leave him alone. it is just wild. >> video workers at an east bay restaurant fighting off a thief. we'll hear from the businesses
