oakland a's. the team seals the deal to play in sacramento in a minor league stadium. it all starts next season and will be a temporary home until the organization builds a new ballpark in las vegas. i'm not sure if i would see them in sacramento because i feel like they're deserting us where they need to stay here with us, who supported them all this time? the deal announced today has left many a's fans heartbroken, as talks to keep the team in oakland beyond the season have broken down. good evening. i'm julie julie haener and i'm greg lee. >> here are the key points announced today. the a's lease at the oakland coliseum expires at the end of this season. the team announced today they will play for three years at the home of the sacramento river cats minor league stadium, with an option to extend an additional year. and the a's have doubled down on their intention to move to las vegas. with a new ballpark hopefully opening for the 2028 season. ktvu is crystal bailey begins our team coverage from oakland and crystal. a lot

of fans are not surprised, but still upset. >> well, yeah, greg, this has been a long time coming. and today oakland sports fans are hanging up their a's hats for good. >> it's a loss. it's a loss that we're feeling a devastating loss for fans who've given their heart and soul to the a's for decades. >> my dad took me to games. i took my boys to games. now i'm taking my granddaughters. >> the a's are playing their last season in oakland before they pack their bags for sacramento, leaving behind a sports legacy in oakland that cut across barriers of race and culture. >> there was a legacy here that if you were a good ball player in oakland, you could make it anywhere. >> paul breck eisner is a super fan and an author who wrote about local sports in oakland and the impact left behind on the children and the legends oakland created. >> there's a lot of, athletes like dave stewart and rickey henderson, those kind of kids that played in the shadow of the coliseum.

>> and with the loss of a third franchise in five years, fans are saying good riddance to the a's owner john fisher doesn't realize what he's losing, but he never knew what he had the greatest place on earth. >> look at that. >> it's beautiful. >> with the team in the process of taking part ownership of the coliseum, the future of the venue is still uncertain, as the city is negotiating with the team to sell their portion to a developer. >> i assume there's no chance you'll go to sac for a game? >> no. hell no. >> fans say they'll continue protesting outside games this season, and they're shifting their support to the new team, the ballers. >> i think it's devastating, but it at least we have clarity and at least now we can look at what the future is going to hold. city officials say they're still fighting for an expansion team to call oakland home. this isn't the end of pro sports in the town. the roots are here, the soul are here, the spiders are here, and the ballers are here. and we're going to, you know, i think we're going to take the torch and begin a new chapter

for sports in oakland. >> now, some of those fans say they are going to attend the last home game at the coliseum for the a's. but the bees are stepping up to the plate. they have spring training tryouts on saturday and their first home opener in just a couple of months at the raymond park in west oakland. greg back to you. >> yeah, definitely the ending of a chapter here. crystal bailey live in oakland for us. crystal thank you. >> well, for more perspective on the a's announcement that they are moving to sacramento, we spoke earlier today with former oakland a's executive vice president andy dolich. he says the a's could end up staying in sacramento beyond 2028. >> seriously, there are so many open issues in terms of going to las vegas. and the a's keep saying 2028, 2028, they need to start construction of that stadium pretty quickly to make that happen. i just don't see it, they're disorganized as we see with their lack of strategy. they weren't able to negotiate anything in oakland.

>> dolich also says the failure to reach a lease extension agreement at the coliseum was a triple header of lack of leadership, teamwork and trust between major league baseball a's owner john fisher and oakland public officials. >> today's announcement from the a's has been years in the making. the team has been searching for a new home and has been under discussions with the city of oakland and other cities, ktvu joey hoarder explains the details of the deal in sacramento. the owners of both the oakland a's and the sacramento kings coming together thursday morning in west sacramento for a major announcement. >> the a's are moving to sac. >> momentous day for our 123 year old franchise. >> the major league team is going to a minor league stadium. the a's are moving to sutter health park in west sacramento. current home of the river cats, with its majority owner, the sacramento kings. >> you're going to see aaron judge hitting home runs out there. this is what an

incredible day. this is epic. it's historic. >> the deal secures a home base for the athletics for three seasons from 2025 to 2027. there's also an option for a fourth season in 2028. >> we're excited to be here for the next three years playing in this beautiful ballpark. >> the announcement comes after the city of oakland's previous offer of a five year, $97 million lease failed the city then offered a final three year, $60 million lease on tuesday, which the a's also turned down. the mayor sent out the following statement thursday. oakland offered a deal that was fair to the a's and was fiscally responsible for our city. we wish the a's the best and will continue our conversations with them on facilitating the sale of their share of the coliseum site. oakland also wanted the mlb to grant exclusive rights to the city for one year, to solicit owners and investors for an mlb expansion team, fisher

saying in part, we explored several options for a temporary home, including the oakland coliseum. even with the long standing relationship and good intentions on all sides in the negotiations with oakland, the conditions to achieve an agreement seemed out of reach. we understand the disappointment this news brings to our fans as this season marks our final one in oakland and let's play ball in the future here. >> woo! sutter health park, with its 14,000 seats, is significantly smaller than the 63,000 seats at the coliseum, but the average a's game attendance is only about 10,000. >> pitch in the air towards right field. >> only 6400 fans showed up to the coliseum wednesday night, when the a's took a beating from the red sox. one nothing. the next home game is april 16th, but for now, it's sacramento. that's catching the attention, and we're looking forward to this being our home until we

move on to our stadium in las vegas. the a's are set to move to vegas in 2028 at the current site of the tropicana in oakland. joey hornick, ktvu, fox two news. >> well, other sacramento city leaders joined what they called a celebration of the a's decision to play in sacramento until they moved to las vegas. >> my message to the a's fans is obviously here in sacramento, but also in oakland, is that this will be your team to and i am joined by mayor darrell steinberg called oakland a great city that doesn't deserve to lose its team. >> he said the a's move had nothing to do with sacramento, but elected officials said they hope to build on the momentum. these are the types of things that we can do to not only bring those jobs, bring that economic vitality to our city, but also retain the young people that we want to keep in the city of sacramento. >> so thrilled to welcome them here. >> the mayor added that the decision ten years ago to build

year actually as we go through time. and we've got the snow flurries and showers all the way down to 1500ft. below that, we had rain up to a half inch and the felton, the santa cruz mountains area, san francisco, almost a half inch at 4/10 of an inch. the rain continues to fall and the severity the thunderstorms, the hail, the really heavy downpours are winding down as the sun begins to set. so we're seeing a little bit less convection or strong convection, and that's allowing for the rain showers to sort of taper down. but we did have some rain on the peninsula over the last couple of hours. heavy rain, heavy hail as well. sfo you see, i don't know if it's raining now, but it was raining pretty good earlier. we can see it on the radar. yeah, it looks like it's still raining in sfo so you can see where the showers are and where they're not. you can see where the heavier showers are by the yellow representing pretty strong radar returns, representing just heavier rainfall. and then the strongest gusts up around elk grove and up in eastern sacramento. but this is dying down most of it. and as we go into the evening hours which

san mateo county and in santa clara county. >> today is certification day. >> and what they're certifying is hard to believe. with all the votes in in the district 16 congressional race, it's a tie. assembly member evan lowe and santa clara county supervisor joe simitian each have exactly 30,249 votes. >> well, i was shocked. i mean, you know, this almost never happens and certainly hasn't happened in a congressional race in california. >> according to san jose state political science professor melinda jackson, it means both lowe and simitian will likely advance. they'll be joining front runner former san jose mayor sam liccardo in the general election. >> if we do have the three way runoff in november, the winning candidate very well might not have a majority. so, you know, it could be a plurality. >> the big question now, will either camp ask for a recount in the hopes of breaking the tie? if they do, they'll have to pay for it up front, and it could

run as much as $500,000. >> they are expensive and they have to basically ask for a recount within five days after the certification. >> today, both camps were still at the registrar, voters pouring over ballot images. however, political analysts think at this point a recount is unlikely unless they had a really strong reason to think that a recount would be decided in their favor. >> i think they're probably thinking they want to hang on to their money and just focus. on november, evan lowe just released a statement saying in part, i'm honored to have won the support of our community to advance to the general election. >> he adds, this historically close race shows that every vote really counts. sam liccardo's camp said. we welcome the opportunity to continue to talk to voters about the issues facing our communities, and joe simitian released a statement saying, sometimes it takes a while for democracy to work. this has been one of those times. call it a cliffhanger, a roller coaster, a wild ride, but it has absolutely been worth the wait. the secretary of state

for san francisco mayor, supervisor, and board president aaron peskin tells ktvu he will launch his campaign this weekend. >> i love and cherish san francisco for its incredible neighborhoods. its incredible people, and san francisco's struggling. >> peskin says his political experience and community connections would help him lead the city through recovery. he joins a growing list of people hoping to unseat mayor london eed, including fellow supervisor asha sapphire and former san francisco supervisor and interim mayor mark farrell. coming up tonight on the 10:00

news, we'll have more with peskin and his race for mayor. >> san francisco's mayor says her efforts to reduce crime are paying off. but the candidates challenging london breed for her seat in november have different opinions. new at six tonight, ktvu christien kafton tells us the latest data shows crime is on the decline in a city that has had more than its fair share of headlines about crime. >> the latest data show that crime in san francisco is dropping the mayor's office, releasing statistics showing property crime is down 32% over the first three months of last year, and violent crime is down 14, including zero homicides in the month of february. >> every arrow is pointing down whether it's burglaries, car break ins, you name it, rapes. anything that's happening in a major city like san francisco, it's been incredible. >> the mayor's office credits the city's collaboration with state and federal law enforcement partners and the district attorney's office that holds criminals accountable once they're arrested. >> we are putting everything

that we have at our disposal to good use. and the numbers, the data reflect it. >> ktvu reached out to those challenging the mayor for her seat in november. former interim mayor mark farrell released a statement reading in part, quote, for many san franciscans, the anemic progress that the mayor continues to tout is too little, too late. we need a mayor that will deliver real results and change, and that is what i will do on day one. daniel lurie also released a statement reading, quote, san francisco needs a mayor that cares about your safety every day, not just in an election year. those who live and work in san francisco are also weighing in about whether they're seeing those signs that the streets are safer. >> and my sense is that that's true, that that data is borne out in my personal experience, i have not felt that extreme threat or concern in a long time. i think it was worse during covid. i think there were times when it felt really scary to be out on the streets. >> in terms of safety. i still feel pretty safe. to be honest. i think a lot of people mind their business. if you mind

their own. but, i haven't seen so much change, to be honest. >> the mayor's office says it expects crime to continue to trend downward, especially in light of proposition e, which passed just last month and would allow police to use new technology to track down criminals in san francisco. christien kafton ktvu fox two news. >> new at six state lawmakers and the governor have announced a deal to reduce the budget shortfall. under today's announcement, california democratic leaders announced $17 billion in spending cuts, delays and deferrals. that includes one time spending cuts to education and climate programs. it also defers spending on public transit and facility improvement for preschools. assembly leaders hope to introduce a formal bill on the budget by next week. >> and a bit of a wet afternoon commute depends where you are. if you get under one of these cells, it's raining pretty hard. hail and pretty hard coming down as snow above about 16 1700 feet. right now. sfo had a few

slowdowns because of the rain the last few hours. it's been raining pretty heavily in the on the peninsula over since about 4:00 this afternoon. it sort of had a had a little train of cells that lingered there. we will see or continue to see scattered showers tonight, but they will wind down in terms of severity and intensity, intensity being those downdrafts and that that hail represented by strong storms, the sun setting so they lose their fuel. and so as we look at the radar right now, we got them all spinning and you can see up by sacramento. that's where the hot stuff is. the heavier rain. and most of our stuff now almost looks like it's just kind of, you know, the darker greens, there's less of them. looks like it's turning into more of a lighter, persistent shower that should die down. but the cool air continues to linger. so this is how it works out. let's come in a little closer here. this is how it looks right now. this is the model says okay, by midnight tonight it's going to look something like this, which would be clear. it'll be cool to

temporary home after this season at the coliseum for a sense of what baseball fans in sacramento think about sharing their stadium, we're joined by kcra sports anchor michelle dapper from sutter health park in west sacramento. >> michelle, what has the reaction been from fans there today? >> well, i'd tell you that it's a mixed emotions with the fans. a's fans in particular kind of

torn with this situation. you know, got a lot of a's fans not happy. a lot of them saying they're not going to step foot in this ballpark. but remember, sacramento and west sacramento has a long history of a's fans here. this used to be the triple-a ballpark of the a's affiliate, the sacramento river cats. that was from 2000 to 2014. so when the giants took over in 2015, there was a lot of unhappy a's fans that, of course, when that affiliate did leave. and now, of course, it is the giants affiliate. but i think it's a matter of who you talk to. a lot of fans saying that they again, not going to step foot in this ballpark, that they're, you know, they have still have issues with the ownership group. and on the flip side of that, you have other a's fans who can't wait to come into the ballpark because they get an up close and personal look at not only some of the best baseball players in the league, but also an up close and personal look at their team as well. so i think it is again, a mix. there's a whole range of emotions with this, with this whole process, of course. >> and michelle, you touched on

this. the minor league team, the sacramento river cats, who are currently an affiliate of the giants, will now have to share their park with the a's. they were, as you mentioned, part of the a system for a long time. do you think the a's will be embraced there by the local community? >> the one thing i do know about sacramento is they show up and the fans show up in droves. the sacramento kings are throughout all the losing years, the fans were in those seats as well as the sacramento republic fc, our usl championship team. those games sell out every weekend as well, and i think i do think that the fans are going to be in the seats, especially if sacramento and west sacramento wants to make a push for a permanent mlb team. >> well, on that note, michelle, we've certainly been hearing from elected officials today that are excited this very much seems to be a means to an end for sacramento because they'd really like to see that permanent expansion team there. how does this trial run sort of help them reach that goal? i i think it's kind of taking a page out of the playbook with

oklahoma city and the new orleans pelicans back when hurricane katrina hit oklahoma city kind of they the pelicans relocated to oklahoma city and said, hey here play here. >> we have a home for you. and that's kind of the situation right now vivek ranadivé talking with rob manfred, saying, hey, we'll house the a's for three years with that fourth year option. come on down. we've got a home for you. and we'll also audition for a possible permanent place in major league baseball. yeah. >> michelle, tell us a little bit about that home. the venue, sutter health park. how many seats does it hold and will upgrades or improvements need to be made in order for these two teams to share this facility? >> yeah, 14,000 seats is a capacity right now. last week during the river cats media day, they just unveiled their brand new locker room. so the home side, the river cats, do have new locker rooms. the visitor's side will still need to be, of course, go under construction there today. they talked about new lights, new video boards,

possible bleacher seating and seating out in the lawn. so out in the outfield. so there is going to be plenty of upgrades being made there. kind of shy to tell us exactly what those will be and when, but again, they did say for sure, upgrades are coming to sutter health park. >> michelle, beyond the ballpark, we've certainly seen west sacramento continue to build in that area to bring in new business. what about the economic boost this move could have for that area? >> oh man. businesses are ecstatic. they're already talking about their menus and putting possible. you know ricky henderson and all the greats on their menu for like burgers and promotions. it's pretty cool to see. but yeah, businesses are ecstatic. there's hotels, condos all being talked about. nothing but is going to benefit west sacramento from this move. >> all right. well so much to talk about here a big decision today settling years of like what's going to happen with the a's. we now sort of know at least for the next several years where they will be michelle dapper in sacramento for us tonight. we appreciate your

that after this season they will play in west sacramento at sutter health park until a new stadium is built in las vegas. the city of oakland said they will continue talks with the team on the sale of the a share of the coliseum site. >> many oakland a's fans say they are heartbroken but not surprised to lose the team. after more than 50 years here in the city of oakland, they say it's an especially hard blow after the losses of the raiders, also to las vegas and the warriors to san francisco, but some are hoping now that new teams, including the roots, the soul and the ballers will find a following. >> san francisco has released the city's latest crime statistics. they show property crime is down 32% compared with the first three months of last year. violent crime is down 14% and there were zero homicides in february. the mayor's office credits the city's collaboration

with its federal partners, the chp and the da's office, holding criminals accountable after they're arrested. >> you're watching ktvu, fox two news at 630. president biden has issued a stern warning to israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu after an israeli airstrike killed several aid workers in gaza, including one american citizen. >> the two world leaders had a particularly tense phone call today, their first in several weeks. president biden told netanyahu that us policy in gaza could change if the israeli military doesn't do more to improve the humanitarian situation. fox's mark meredith has more. >> in gaza, buildings reduced to rubble, streets mostly empty. three days after an israeli airstrike killed seven aid workers delivering food to gaza's population. in an interview, chef jose andres, world central kitchen founder, took aim at israel, saying his aid workers have been systematically targeted. >> we were targeted deliberately nonstop until everybody was dead

in this convoy that that that cannot be. >> in washington, president biden held his first call with israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu since the attack. the white house calling the situation unacceptable. >> so i think the president has been very clear. he's outraged, he's heartbroken, and this needs to stop. israel says it's conducting an investigation, calling the incident, quote, a grave mistake. >> but tensions between the two leaders have been steadily growing, both facing political pressure at home to end the war. now in its sixth month, prime minister netanyahu seems to be advancing the interests not of israel but only of prime minister netanyahu and it's time for that to end. but republicans say israel still deserves america's support. >> this was a major screw up on the part of the idf. however it was an accident versus what hamas does, which is deliberately target civilians and target aid workers that aren't cooperating. >> the white house says the

president told the israelis he believes a cease fire is necessary now to save lives and stabilize the region. at the white house, mark meredith, fox news. >> protesters blocked entrances to lockheed martin facilities in sunnyvale for about five hours this morning in support of gaza will be free. >> palestine will be free. >> dozens of protesters handcuffed themselves to gather outside the weapons manufacturer, demanding that the u.s. end its financial and military support of israel. the demonstrators say lockheed martin supplies israel with f-16 and f-35 fighter jets, as well as hellfire missiles and other technology. the protest ended peacefully this morning, and organizers said there were no arrests in a statement, lockheed martin told ktvu, quote, we respect the right to peaceful protest and we are honored to partner with the u.s. military and our international partners to deliver strategic deterrence and security solutions. >> governor newsom highlighted a renewable energy project today

in the central valley. the governor and federal officials visited a project in merced county that's installing floating solar panels on a canal that travels through six counties, including alameda county, the san luis and delta mendota water district received $15 million in federal funding for the five year pilot project, the governor said. projects like this will help the state deliver clean power and more water, but it faced resistance. >> there's some folks that quite well. let's just be candid don't want these things near their canals. so we had to work to convince them. but this is a no brainer. this is common sense. >> a similar project is underway near turlock. researchers say that the state could save billions of gallons of water per year from evaporation if all of the canals were covered with solar panels. >> as baltimore responds to its bridge collapse, the city faces difficult conditions trying to clear out the channel in the city's harbor. bad weather and

murky waters are challenging crews posing dangerous conditions to recovery efforts. low visibility means divers can only see 1 to 2ft in front of them. some police divers were honored for navigating these conditions as they searched for victims. federal officials are already planning a replacement bridge and how to fund it. >> i think we're going to have strong bipartisan support. this is a catastrophic event to an infrastructure that affects our nation. >> the white house says it does expect the federal government to pay the bill on a new bridge. president biden is expected to visit the site of the collapse tomorrow. new attempts to boost the housing supply in the south bay have. the federal government is stepping in to help and a hydrogen powered port coming up. >> some local elected officials see firsthand the result of clean energy investment in the east bay

emergency interim housing site. the mayor and congressman jimmy panetta today visited the rue ferrari tiny home site in south san francisco or south san jose. since it opened in 2021, it has served more than 300 people. mayor mehan says his plan will add 134 new beds to the 124 existing beds at that facility. expanding the size of the housing site will cost taxpayers $30 million. representative panetta says the federal government will chip in $1 million to help pay for it. >> this approach, these quick build interim communities of which the city already has six. and now we're looking to expand work. they are effective. it is an all hands on deck issue. it is an all levels of government issue. and i'm proud to say that the federal government is actually playing its part. >> the city says so far, of the 1500 people the interim housing

it is out there, right now. the sun is setting and so we're seeing a lot of the stronger cells dying down. although you do see one out here just between livermore out by san ramon. so a lightning pop there. let's back it up and see if we can time this out. so there's the cell that produced it. and then, then right around 645. so just really just a couple of minutes ago in out towards black hawk. so that's still producing some thunder, thunder and lightning down around santa cruz. these cells look pretty aggressive as well. so this chance this opportunity for a shower and even a thunder shower continues into tonight. i'd say after midnight it should be pretty much done. and then tomorrow there's a slight chance for scattered shower as well. but but again, there's the system going down the coast and it's pulling all this cold air from the north. and that's going to be a cool day tomorrow. highs will just be in the 50s. here is the radar again. got all the radar spinning. what you do is these radars do well for about 250 miles out so that they can
