a third damaged a police vehicle. much of the chaos occurred on the peninsula in towns and cities that rarely see these sideshows. >> ktvu, an rubin, live for us now in mountain view and the concern is sideshows are moving from places that crack down on them to towns that haven't yet. >> yeah that's right. so there is now a big push from some of these smaller departments to band together to investigate these as they happen and to work together on them afterwards. this was the scene in menlo park saturday. screeching tires, a massive crowd and a lone police officer who happened to see it all unfold. >> as soon as the officer got there, people started to surround the officer's vehicle, blind him with laser pointers, and started to hit and kick his patrol car, causing a window to break. >> this photo shows the damage. thankfully the officer was not injured, but as the sideshow moved down the peninsula to palo

alto and then to mountain view, a spectator wasn't so lucky. a 20 year old suffered a broken ankle when she was hit by a spinning car. >> these types of activities are incredibly dangerous, not just to responding officers, but to the entire public at large and to the participant s who are involved in them. >> that's why there's a massive crackdown underway. places like san jose have a special sideshow protocol involving air support, 100 officers, and an ordinance that allows bystanders to be cited. and in san joaquin county, they have a zero tolerance approach. they've decided to seize cars as evidence and hold them indefinitely. i wouldn't waste your time coming out here or calling about your car because it's going to sit until a judge or the da tells us to let it go, authorities are waiting to see the impact of all this. >> i think that that action will absolutely tend to move that sideshow to a different location, in this case to a place like menlo park that rarely sees them. once we know it's happening here, we're going to let surrounding agencies

know, because that activity tends to move from place to place, as it did on saturday night. >> eventually, sideshow activity moved to oakland and then to the bay bridge, where it blocked all traffic. ultimately chp detained four people, but menlo park says this investigation is far from over. >> i don't think they believe that they're off the hook. i think most of the people who are engaging in this kind of activity, they they know how dangerous it is. they try to take measures to make themselves anonymous. and we take measures to try to identify as many of these folks as we can. >> authorities say everything from license plate readers to video can be helpful in trying to identify the people responsible. and they say more arrests and seizure warrants might be coming in the near weeks. >> mike and ruben live tonight in mountain view. and thank you, linda. >> a five tonight. a man is now in custody after a standoff with san francisco police that lasted more than seven hours. police say the first reports came in around 630 this morning of a man

breaking into an apartment building on gonzales drive in the parkmerced neighborhood that's near san francisco state police also say they believe the man was experiencing some kind of mental health emergency. a neighbor who did not want to be on camera, told us that she awoke this morning to the man banging on her door, ended up stabbing our door about 20 times, and then walked down the street. >> was messing with other doors, but he's been threatening the neighborhood for weeks, walking around with a knife, stealing things, banging on our wall at all hours of the night. he's been just a terror for the last six months or longer. according to some other neighbors. >> after several hours of negotiations, officers deployed flash bangs inside the building. the man was arrested shortly after. there is no word yet on the charges. the man might face. >> and tonight the search continues for the man who crashed an suv in concord, killing a nine year old girl. the chp telling us a gray mazda was driving on north 680 early yesterday morning when, for some reason, it went off the roadway

through the dirt median and overturned, and several times six people were inside the vehicle and officers say several of them were not wearing seat belts. the nine year old was killed and four other women were hospitalized with major injuries. the driver, who is described as a man in his 30s, ran from the scene. oakland police tonight investigating what appears to be a deadly hit and run. officers say they received a call around 1:00 this morning about an incident at the intersection of 75th avenue and san leandro street. responding officers found a person who appeared to be hit by a vehicle. that person did not survive their injuries. no vehicle was located at the scene. the investigation is ongoing. >> a recent and rapid rise in assaults on bus drivers, prompting one transit agency to take some action. ktvu south bay reporter jesse gary live for us this afternoon in san mateo with what's being done. and also jesse, some reaction from frontline workers. >> heather, good evening to you. samtrans operates 71 bus lines

here in san mateo county. the busiest ones are along the el camino corridor, which is just off to my left. it's here where officials say drivers are facing increasing acts of violence as sam trans bills itself as the peninsula's public transit connector. but increasingly it's bus operators are targets of attack. >> the driving part, i would say about 20% of the job and the 80% is dealing with the public. that's what makes it very difficult. >> 22 year employee ernie solano is not only a union president but also a bus operator. he says the district's 320 drivers routinely face verbal and physical assaults, with some passengers even spitting on them . >> sometimes it's just, like over the fare dispute. and also when the operator just tried to enforce, the rules, when i was telling her not to lie down on the bus. so other passengers can

actually use the seat and she just kind of ran towards me. >> solano escaped that encounter without harm, but it wasn't an outlier. according to sam trans, a handful of such incidents from 2018 to 2022 spiked last year. there were 14 cases of assaults against bus operators in 2023. >> this mirrors a national trend that's really concerning. and so it's our mission to prevent as many of these assaults as we possibly can. >> the district is installing see through protective barriers around the driver's compartment to help reduce the risk of violence. additionally, sam trans board days ago approved enacting a new code of conduct and enforcement policy. it applies to all passengers and members of the public. the policy targets behaviors including harassment, discrimination, fare evasion, physical and verbal assault, and carrying or using weapons. violators can be removed from a

sam trams vehicle and be banned from future use for a defined or indefinite period of time. >> i would really think it's going to make a whole lot of difference with our bus operators, especially for our female operators. >> so far this year, officials say there have been four assaults on sam trans busses, which is below the national average at least so far. the petitions we mentioned are being installed right now. that work should be completed in the next three months. as for the code of conduct that will be active once it is posted to the sam trans website, we're live in san mateo this evening. jesse gary ktvu, fox two news. heather, back up to you. >> yeah, we'll see if those things do, in fact, work. all right, jesse, thank you. >> all right. it is one of the most anticipated astronomical events in recent years. a total solar eclipse cut a path over parts of mexico. 15 states here in the u.s. and eastern canada treating tens of millions of

people to stunning views as the moon passed right between the earth and the sun. okay, so for those of us not in the narrow path for the total solar eclipse , we were still treated to a partial eclipse. that's right. ktvu tom vacar spent the morning at san francisco's exploratorium. he's here with us in studio for today's festive mood. tom also has a little bit of a deep meaning here. >> yeah it did. it's kind of surprising, actually, and it was a lot of fun to do it, though. as rare as eclipses are here on earth, especially total eclipses, they actually happen very often, but only if we have a spaceship. the exploratorium usually closed on mondays, was wide open for the eclipse, so professionals could answer visitors questions about this rare event. wow. >> you maybe have a chance of two per year with the way the alignment works out. jim metrically, and then that event needs to happen where people live. >> reactions went way beyond the

wow level, i would hope, and i believe that it would really trigger an exploration of outside your own little world that there is hope and goodness and beauty and awe in the world. >> i want to actually experience this and this a bucket list, issue. and then the what, the next eclipse? i don't think i'll be around here. >> i feel like it's a transformation for, you know, new beginnings, new energy. this is the time of change. you know, it's pretty awesome. >> if you come to a science center like the exploratorium or chabot and children are there, then that sparks a magic kind of interest in the sciences. and from that can come wonderful careers and help for all mankind. >> it's not only important the fact that parents are here, but a lot of educators, a lot of astronomers are here to help out other other people, other families. >> i think for her it's important, especially in women. they're not in very prominent in the field of science. but i

think things like this help to promote the interest. >> one more thing, though rare on earth, whenever the sun and moon can see each other, an eclipse is cast somewhere. >> that's because that shadow that's being cast by the moon, being in front of the sun is falling somewhere in space, not on our planet at all. >> now say, you know the next major earth bound eclipse, a total one is two summers from now in eastern greenland for the us 2044. get traveling. tom baker, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right. thanks, tom. people also headed to the chabot space and science center in oakland to get a look at the partial eclipse. the observatory held a big viewing party, handing out those special glasses so people could look safely at the skies. as you can see, lots of people turned out with perfect viewing conditions in the east bay hills for some of the younger folks. well it was their first experience of a solar eclipse. >> i was just really excited for like, seeing the eclipse. it's

probably like my first time seeing it, and i'm not sure when the next one is coming. probably like when i'm like in my teens. >> what do you see? i'm a moon along with the safety glasses, people could view the eclipse through the eight inch refracting telescope, which was fitted with a special solar filter. >> all right, while we only had a partial view of today's event, tens of millions of people across 15 states were able to experience total darkness in the middle of the day. fox's connor hansen has that part of the story from the path of totality, parts of the country plunging into total darkness as the total solar eclipse treks from texas to maine. >> we have totality, skies darkening overhead as tens of millions of people witness the total solar eclipse, one of the first cities in the 115 mile path of totality. eagle pass, texas, the border city, dark as night in the middle of the day.

>> i was expecting it to get like dark, but not that dark. >> the moon passed over the path of totality, blocking out the sun for as long as four minutes and 28 seconds. temperatures dropped significantly and a silence fell over the area. then people broke into cheers during the cosmic event. >> i thought it was awesome. once in a lifetime experience for some, plans didn't go as expected. >> parts of south texas were almost blocked from seeing the eclipse. fortunately, cloud coverage in dallas thinned out just about an hour before the rare event. burnet, texas outside of austin canceling their eclipse festival due to the threat of severe weather. and two parks in ohio one near columbus, the other close to cleveland, hitting capacity hours before the eclipse passed over. i didn't really think we were going to see it, but we saw it, so it was really exciting. >> if you missed the total solar eclipse or are just hoping to see another one, you'll have to wait about 20 years. >> if you want to watch it here

despite the us supreme court blocking his student loan forgiveness plan last year, fox's rebecca kaster reports on this new plan and the legal challenges it now faces. >> folks, i will never stop to deliver student debt relief and hard working americans. >> it was one of president joe biden's top 2020 campaign promises, and once again in 2024, he hopes reducing student loan balances will help raise his poll numbers by freeing millions of americans from this crushing debt of student debt. >> it means they can finally get on with their lives instead of being put their lives being put on hold. >> biden's latest plan to forgive student loan debt would cancel up to $20,000 for borrowers with runaway interest automatically cancel debt for those who qualify under existing programs but haven't applied, and help those experiencing financial hardship. but the last time biden tried to implement

student loan forgiveness, it was shot down by the supreme court. and this proposal is sure to face a legal battle as well. >> the concern that i have is that some of these proposals could actually survive on their own, but by including them with some proposals, that may be an overreach, president biden may be jeopardizing the entire collection, even with the legal fallout, biden has still canceled more student loan debt than any other president. >> he's wiped out a total of $146 billion for 4 million americans. >> unless biden can pick his numbers up dramatically, he can't win. that's what explains him doubling down on student loans. it's not about constitutionality. it's politics . >> the department of education is required to gather public comment on the proposal before it's finalized. and despite the legal challenges, white house officials say they hope borrowers start to see relief in the early fall in washington. rebecca kaster ktvu, fox two news former president trump avoided committing to a national

abortion ban if he is reelected, the former president releasing a video statement on his truth social platform, saying the ultimate decision should be left up to individual states. >> the move has angered some conservatives. former vice president mike pence calling trump's, quote, retreat on the right to life a slap in the face to millions of americans who voted for him. the white house quickly reacted, vowing to restore the right to choose. >> my view is now that we have abortion where everybody wanted it. from a legal standpoint, the states will determine by vote or legislation or perhaps both, and whatever they decide must be the law of the land. in this case, the law of the state. >> joe biden has been clear. if congress passes a law reinstating the protections of roe v wade, joe biden will sign it into law. >> since the supreme court overturned roe v wade, voters in several states have backed measures upholding the right to an abortion. a new york appeals

court judge rejected former trump's request to delay his hush money criminal criminal trial while he fights to move the case out of manhattan. today's decision comes one week before jury selection is set to begin. trump's lawyers had argued an emergency hearing that the trial should be postponed while they seek a change of venue. the judge did not rule on trump's request to reverse a gag order against him. that order prevents him from publicly discussing details of the trial. >> new at five. ticketmaster may soon have competition if state lawmakers pass a new bill. today, oakland assembly member buffy wicks introduced legislation to create competition in the ticket sales industry that has been dominated by ticketmaster now for years. the bill is designed to reduce prices and increase availability of tickets. wicks says right now, ticketmaster controls about 80% of the primary ticket sales in the u.s. since ticketmaster and live nation were allowed to merge in 2010, ticket prices

have gone up an astronomical 140, which is an extraordinary amount. >> and we know consumers feel that every time they buy tickets, and that's adjusted for inflation. >> assembly member wicks says opening retail competition means companies would have to compete for business, leading to lower fees. similar efforts are also underway in congress, as well as other states and monterey county. >> caltrans taking the first steps towards repairing that crumbling stretch of highway one that was damaged by recent rain. the prep work to install anchors to stabilize the cliff began today with the actual work beginning tomorrow. a 40 mile stretch of the highway has been closed now since easter weekend, when a landslide took out part of the road daily convoys are taking people in and out of the closure area twice a day, caltrans says. it's unclear just how long these repairs will take . >> all right. a pretty nice looking weekend out there. we got some warmer temperatures

yesterday by a few degrees. today's temperatures came up another ten degrees as the high pressure behind me jumps on in and starts to fill in and sets us up with a pretty warm week ahead with a big shift or a big switch at the end of the week, which is sort of a drag because earlier in the week or a couple of days ago, the models had rain for the weekend and then it pulled it out. and last night i came out here and i was like, okay, it looks pretty good. the couple of the model runs were pretty dry. and then to this morning i woke up and model stuck that cut off low right off our coast. so we'll get to what that means a little bit. but the weekend is going to be impacted to some level. is it going to be a gully washer and that whole kind of probably not. but it's going to be nuisance showers for some with some certainty as either friday or saturday. so there's the high pressure. we're into the 70s today. these were the highs from today again ten degrees warmer, a solid ten degrees warmer than it was yesterday 67 right now in fremont, 70 in palo alto. nice along the coast. northwest wind setting us up with a classic

spring weather pattern. and the thing that's really nice is and it's going to get not it's going to be a little less nice each day as this air quality. i mean, look how crisp and clear the atmosphere is. a little bit of rain over the weekend and a little bit of wind and the wind that we had today. but as that high gets stronger and we get warmer, the lid goes on the atmosphere and we start to see, you know, you start to get a little bit of haze, a little bit of gunk in the atmosphere. but right now air quality about as good as it gets in the bay area this time of year. we're going to see temperatures come up a couple more degrees tomorrow. and by the middle of this week we're back into the low 80s 80, 81, 82, something like that. and then there's that big switch towards the weekend. we'll take a look at it mainly right now friday night into saturday. but we'll take a look at the latest model run, which by the way is going to change. so it's going to move around a lot with this system. so lots to watch i'll be back here in a few minutes. >> all right bill thank you israel. now preparing to take its military fight further south in gaza after the break. the latest obstacle facing a possible cease fire, us coast guard members returned home to

dozens of people gathered in palo alto over the weekend calling for an immediate cease fire in gaza. the group calls it its weekly events, vigils for the children of gaza. they say they've been meeting at this corner each sunday, now for months, trying to bring awareness to the suffering.

>> we're talking about an extraordinary number of orphaned children, children who've lost their entire families, and children who are now caretakers for their younger siblings. it's just really i'm a mother of four children. it's incompris sensible to me. >> the group says it will continue calling for a cease fire here every sunday until the fighting stops. >> late today, it was reported that hamas rejected the latest proposal for a cease fire. now this comes one day after the israeli military announced it was withdrawing troops from some cities in gaza. >> but as fox's trey yingst reports, israel is moving forward with an invasion of rafah. the city is considered to be hamas's last stronghold in the region. >> palestinians returning to the southern gaza city of khan yunis on monday, one day after israel's military announced it was withdrawing from the area. the move leaves just one brigade stationed in the territory, though defense officials say troops are not stopping military operations but instead regrouping ahead of an offensive

in the city of rafah. >> we think a full scale military invasion of rafah would have an enormously harmful effect on those civilians. >> the announcement coming as cease fire talks appear to make progress. hamas leadership, as well as delegations from israel, qatar and the u.s, have been in cairo for conversations as israeli officials say, a deal is difficult but doable. families of hostages still in hamas captivity are urging the sides to reach an agreement. >> no conversation should be had without the starting point being 133 hostages need to get out. once that happens, pressure can be released in other parts of the region. >> meanwhile, israeli forces say they are focusing on southern lebanon as fears grow over a possible attack from iran. it comes after an airstrike killed several iranian leaders in syria last week. tehran now asking the u.s. to step aside as they prepare their response. >> iran does not want a war with israel and certainly does not

airport escalated today when the city of san francisco threatened to sue over a possible name change. >> that's right. the city attorney says, if san francisco is indeed added to the title of oakland airport. legal action could be necessary. ktvu henry lee live tonight at the airport with the latest on this one. henry >> yeah, the battle of the airports is heating up, with san francisco issuing a legal threat on trademark infringement grounds. and the oakland airport pushing back right out of the

gate. >> from our perspective, the proposal appears intentionally designed to divert travelers who may be unfamiliar with bay area geography. >> san francisco city attorney david chu says changing the name of oakland international airport to san francisco bay oakland international airport would lead to confusion. and if oakland goes down that path, he's ready to sue. >> litigation is always a last resort. it's one that we hope to avoid. but if oakland chooses to move forward with a decision on thursday, we will be forced to, to consider all of our legal options. >> oakland airport officials say a recent poll shows local residents are comfortable with a name change and support the airport's efforts to increase the number of flights and travel destinations. in a statement, the port of oakland, which oversees the airport, said the proposed name modification will clarify, not confuse. the new name identifies where oakland airport is actually located, which is on the san francisco bay. if the proposed name modification is approved by the

find out thursday if they continue to go forward with this name change, triggering some air to air combat over trademark infringement. live at oakland airport henry lee ktvu, fox two news. yeah a big decision coming up. >> indeed later this week. one we'll be sure to follow henry. >> thank you. well, we're now hearing from passengers on board a southwest plane that had an engine cover peel off during takeoff. this jet was flying from denver to houston when the removable cover came off and struck a wing flap. the boeing 737 800 was able to return to denver safely. passengers who sat near the engine say they yelled at flight attendants to come over and see the damage. they also say they were shocked to see that paneling from the plane stripping away no one was hurt, and all passengers eventually arrived in houston yesterday afternoon, southwest said its maintenance team is looking into the incident. >> a new at five tonight. tesla settling a lawsuit brought by the family of a silicon valley man who died in a crash relying on the company's semi-autonomous

driving software. walter wong was killed more than six years ago when his tesla model x smashed into a concrete barrier on highway 101, in mountain view . his family filed a wrongful death and negligent lawsuit against tesla, claiming the car company's driver assist software was responsible for his death. that trial was set to begin tomorrow. the amount tesla paid to settle this case has not been disclosed. >> san francisco mayor london breed was in sacramento, where lawmakers are looking for solutions to help big cities thrive post-covid. san francisco assemblyman matt haney chaired the first informational hearing on downtown recovery. he said the move toward remote work has caused downtowns to empty out. other challenges include lack of affordable housing, growing homelessness and the opioid crisis. the group discussed policies that could help downtowns recover. >> no longer 9 to 5 financial district, but 24 over seven, and my 30 by 30 plan is to bring

and awareness about fentanyl is one of the best ways to prevent overdoses and drug abuse in young people. well, a group called the overdose free marin coalition will hold a forum this week to address the increase in opioid overdoses in that county. the marin county health department says recent statistics show the county is averaging more than one fatal overdose each week, and that fentanyl continues to be the biggest threat. the group is holding a virtual discussion this wednesday to share collaborative strategies, resources, as well as ways to take action. >> the chairwoman of the federal communications commission was in the south bay today to push for federal net neutrality protections. fcc chair jessica rosenworcel met with santa clara county public safety officials at a fire training station in campbell. now, this site was chosen to highlight an incident involving the santa clara county fire department, which had its internet access throttled while responding to a massive fire in 2018. net neutrality was repealed during the trump administration, rosenworcel says

reestablishing the rules would bring back a national standard for broadband reliability, as the technology has vastly changed how we communicate. >> we should embrace that openness and make sure it works for everyone, and that includes also public safety, because when they're in the middle of a crisis and they're trying to identify how best to conquer a fire, you want to make sure that they have every connection they need to do that effectively. >> the fcc is expected to vote on a final net neutrality rules later this month. >> well, the national association of intercollegiate athletics, the governing body for mostly small colleges, announced a policy today that essentially bans transgender athletes from women's sports. the naia oversees some 83,000 athletes at schools all across the country, and is believed to be the first college sports organization to take such a step. under the new policy, all athletes may participate in naia sponsored male sports, but only

this in summerlin, nevada. police say the gunman is also dead after taking his own life. the victims are only identified as a man and a woman, and it's not clear how or if they knew the suspect. police are still working to try to identify a motive in this case. authorities in haiti recovered a cargo ship after a shootout that killed several police, as well as gang members. the gun battle off the coast of haiti lasted more than five hours and left two police officers and an unknown number of gang members dead. that gang reportedly kidnaped everyone aboard the ship and stole around 10,000 sacks of rice. >> the next phase of removing debris from the site of the baltimore bridge collapse is getting underway. containers on board the cargo ship that crashed into the bridge's support beams have been removed. the coast guard says this will give teams the ability to clear debris from the ship's bow, and ultimately allow the vessel to move. the army corps of engineers says it hopes to fully

actual winds reporting in nevada are out of the southwest. out of the west in santa rosa and napa west. so these are westerly winds, which is super typical for this time of year. and blowing though 21 miles an hour that sustained wind at sfo. so it's pretty breezy. and as i mentioned before, the days get longer. the jet stream, which we'll just call that the jet stream, right. and it just they start to go, it starts to go north. it just does the days it gets warmer down here and the jet stream tries to stay intact. so it goes closer to the cold air jet stream. you know really all it is it divides up in the upper atmosphere. it divides the cold air from the warm air. warm air is to the south. cold air is to the north. these are the current temperatures. pretty nice. above average, not above average, but above where they were yesterday by, like i say, ten degrees or so. the model here we are tomorrow morning. fog tries to reform. not tomorrow night but on wednesday. yeah. so fog kind of see the coastal fog kind of coming in indication obviously that the high pressure is doing its job. and that will be one of the warmer days. right. because air sinking air sinks it warms.
