steady. winning the race today. on this wednesday get you out the east bay here. lamorinda looking down highway 24. lafayette, a good 20 minute ride to the calcutt tunnel in orinda. and on your way to oakland and eventually berkeley or san francisco, wherever you may be going. and this awaits you at the toll plaza. it's been busy this morning for a good hour and a half. media and lights are on. when you hit the grade, it is going to be bumper to bumper, so a slow roll into san francisco as well. heading in for marin. golden gate is free and easy, but as steve has been mentioning all morning long, a lot of the fog, a lot of fog out there on our coastal communities, especially up there in marin, coming into the city. so take it slow if you're coming that way. time now 701. let's send it back to day. >> all right, frank, thank you. well, tara vanderveer, the legendary head basketball coach of the stanford women's basketball team, will announce her retire this afternoon at a news conference. vanderveer is college basketball's winningest coach and she's in the hall of

fame. ktvu bailey o'carroll is where many of those victories occurred on the stanford campus at maples pavilion. good morning, bill. >> good morning dave. in sports seems like there are always debatable, but one thing not debatable, that is tara vanderveer. she is a trailblazer, a hall of famer, a fierce advocate of women's basketball and the winningest college basketball coach in the history of the ncaa. when it comes to men or women. now her resume, it speaks for itself. to call it impressive might be an understatement. take a look at this. she has over 1200 career victories. she's a three time ncaa champion, a 15 time pac 12 champion, a five time national coach of the year. of course, the winningest head coach in ncaa history. she also led the women's national team to a gold medal in the 96 atlanta olympic

games. but get this she started her career as an unpaid graduate assistant at ohio state. years later, after a couple of other stints, she was hired here in 1985 at stanford and quickly turned this program into a national powerhouse. but in a statement on her retiring, she said that i've loved this game of basketball since i was a little girl. it has given me so much throughout my life. i hope i've been able to give at least a little bit back, and i think many people would agree. she certainly has the impact she has made on basketball, women's basketball, in specific is undeniable, evident by the people she's touched. just about everyone in the basketball world is reacting to her retirement news, from warriors head coach steve kerr to different analysts across the sport and even her former players. but perhaps the most impactful and shocking example of her imprint on this game is when you consider that when tara took this job at stanford, the three point shot

was not recognized in women's college basketball in the nba. excuse me, the wnba was still seven years away from its inception. boy have times changed. tara certainly had a hand in that. now, the day she announced her retirement from for the first time in history, it was announced that the women's college basketball national championship surpassed viewership of the men's by millions of viewers. it wasn't just by a couple. now, as for what is next for this program, of course, big changes. they will no longer be playing in the pac 12. the pac 12, as we know it is sort of over now. stanford will join the acc, they will be playing in that conference. of course, they also will have a new head coach. with tara leaving. it creates a vacancy, some pretty big shoes to fill, but not to worry. the school already in talks with her replacement is the longtime associate head coach for this program, kate pay, certainly familiar with this program. so

no need to worry for cardinals fans. they are likely in good hands with her. reporting live at maples pavilion. i'm bailey o'carroll, ktvu, fox two news. >> daly. thank you. new this morning the independent baseball team, the oakland ballers, has signed three players, including a woman. all three players took part in last saturday's open tryout at laney college. the new ballers are right handed pitcher kelsie whitmore in fielder andrew martinez and pitcher connor capparelli. they've all signed contracts. they'll attend this month's spring training. whitmore made history in 2022 as the first woman to sign a pro contract with a major league baseball partner league. she also previously played for the sonoma stompers. >> our time now 705 arizona's supreme court upheld a ban on almost all abortions in arizona. the state supreme court upheld a law that was first approved back in 1864, before arizona was even a state. in the ruling, the court said that all abortions except those necessary to save a woman's life are illegal. it

would also punish those who provided an abortion with prison time. well, one reporter who covers politics in arizona says this supreme court ruling takes the national debate over abortion rights to a brand new level. >> this is a major swing state saying abortion is nearly totally illegal. it comes in an election year when this state will be crucial to deciding the presidency and control of the senate. now the court did put its ruling on hold for a couple of weeks to allow more lower court appeals. >> that means it will be almost two months before any possible enforcement takes place. >> cal-fire is asking for help in identifying a person believed to have started a fire on the san jose state university campus. authorities shared this video that they say shows the suspected arsonist. the fire happened on march 31st, around 530 in the evening. it's not clear where on campus the fire was set. if you have information

for investigators, call cal fire or san jose state police. >> our time is 707. a judge delayed a decision on whether the family members accused of killing a three year old girl in san jose should go on trial. that decision was supposed to be yesterday. today. but the judge decided to let the lawyers on both sides present more evidence. the prosecutors say the child's mother, grandfather and uncle killed the little girl during an exorcism at a church in san jose back in september. they say those family members believe the little girl was possessed by a demon. >> we're learning the identity of a nine year old girl killed in a crash over the weekend in the east bay. dana hernandez tapia of oregon was killed early sunday morning when the suv she was in crashed at the junction of 680 and 242, in concord. four women inside the vehicle were hospitalized and the male driver left the scene. no word yet from the highway patrol on what caused the crash, or whether that driver has been found.

>> time now 708, in santa rosa. some people there can't call 911 right now because of a phone outage. it was caused by a failed at&t cable, and less than 100 people are affected by this. now, if you can't reach 911, you can still call the santa rosa police non-emergency line. there's no word yet on when that phone service will be restored. >> san francisco nonprofit glide has announced a new business leader will replace warren buffett at its famous lunch guest fundraiser auction. buffett will be replaced by salesforce ceo marc benioff. over 22 years, glide has raised $53 million by auctioning off lunch with buffett. leaders with the nonprofit shared how they picked benioff as the new lunch guest for the auction. >> marc benioff is iconic here in the bay area and the world, and glide is iconic, iconic san francisco. and so it was just kind of this great match. and

long. if you live in pacifica or sausalito, a lot of fog out there in those coastal communities. so you got to take it slow. case in point, you can see the golden gate bridge. well, actually, you can see the golden gate bridge, frank. and that's because of all that fog out there. but people are moving along pretty well. but do take it slow if you're in some of those coastal communities got an overview of the east bay here. bay point's been a stickler all mornin highway four west, as you can see. that's a slowdown. highway 80 through richmond berkeley got a slow down there. and once you get to the bay bridge, a slow crawl over that bay bridge and we pay homage to the south bay, a little bit of traffic to 80, as you can see, but for the most part, the south bay has been incident free. we like that very much. on a wednesday that is a look at traffic and we will send it back today. >> okay, frank. thank you. time is 711 one san francisco community on edge. after several vandalism attacks at a san francisco mosque. just as the

add an extra layer of security around the city. schools ktvu andre senior live now with the reaction from supporters and opponents andre, to these new measures. >> well, garcia, the issue of how to keep san jose schools safe while being sensitive to the needs of the city's unhoused , has been the center of a debate for the past few months. the council held its first public hearings back in january, and yesterday, the leaders of the bay area's largest city made their long awaited decision. the council members banned anyone from camping within 150ft of a school campus. they also approved a second ordinance that would prohibit rvs and other large vehicles from parking close to schools. >> a little bit of the wild west where people are going to park wherever they want to park because nobody's going to do anything about it, especially oversize vehicles where you can't see around them and i think, perhaps we can prioritize , roadway safety. >> many homeless advocates in san jose oppose both of these measures. they say these ordinances will only make life harder for those living on the

streets or inside their cars or rvs. >> i think it's just a tragedy. it's just horrible. where are they going to go? let's get them into berryessa first. let's get another safe parking for rvs. let's just get some more now. not next year. >> however, san jose mayor matt mehan said these new policies are not designed to turn the unhoused into criminals. he says the goal is to simply ensure the safety of the entire community. he now city leaders say yesterday's vote is just the first step in enacting these new ordinances. the state will likely take several months before enforcement starts to begin. dave >> all right, andre. thank you. time 715 pinole. now, the latest bay area city to ban new gas stations. the temporary moratorium in pinole also limits expansion of existing gas stations. it's part of an effort to reduce the city's greenhouse gas emissions to at least 40% by the year 2030. the city council

is due to draft a permanent ordinance in the coming months. the petaluma mayor made big news. in fact, international news back in 2021 when it became the first city in the nation to ban new gas stations. >> the city of sunnyvale is applying for grants in the hopes of starting a cost effective ride share option. the city council has unanimously voted to partner with silicon valley's hopper. it's a ride share service that costs less than $5 a ride in cities such as cupertino and santa clara. sunnyvale officials say they hope the grants will fund a pilot program that will allow students disadvantaged residents and senior citizens more mobility while controlling costs. >> our time is now 716 a champion of obstacle courses. celebrate her latest record breaking accomplishment. this one occurred today at one of the world's most famous landmarks. a new garnier managed to climb. now watch this 360ft up the eiffel tower using nothing more

warm. and it was a nice tuesday. temperatures bumped up. they'll even be warmer today. but then we're going into a significant cooldown with rain arriving on saturday. what? yes that's the way it looks here. highs yesterday. hope you got out and enjoyed it. concord. healdsburg. livermore. cupertino. atherton orinda, sonoma and san rafael 76 to 79 degrees today will be warmer away from the coast. there's too much fog on the coast, so morning fog, coast and bay that will retreat and burn back. but boy, there's a lot more today. a few high clouds, no biggie, but temperatures inland will jump up santa rosa a quarter of a mile visibility half moon bay sold out zero visibility. so this is more for coastal variety than the what we see in the wintertime here. and if you're inland, it won't matter because the fog is not deep enough. so napa, pleasanton, redwood city, san jose, up we go. upper 70s low 80s on the forecast. highs a lot of low clouds and fog there. but if i put in this right here, there is a little teeny little

officer who's at the center of a racist text message scandal, is asking a judge to move his case to a venue hundreds of miles away. mark mcnamara, a white former police officer, was sued after being accused of excessive use of force. now he was seen on video in march of 2022 shooting a black man who was actually trying to prevent a robbery at a

restaurant, according to court documents. mcnamara sent racist and homophobic text messages after that shooting. now his lawyer is asking that an upcoming civil trial be moved to the eureka area. fearing that mcnamara won't get a fair trial here in the bay area because of extensive media coverage. however, the attorney for the victim is against that. >> that's complete nonsense, there have been big cases, major cases that, you know, have even more coverage, national coverage that still take place at the venue in which the incidents, you know, have happened. and it's just another method used to delay the trial and to delay the justice that mr. green has been waiting over two years to get. >> right now, the case is tied up in appeals, and it's not clear when a judge might rule on the request of the former police officer. >> two health care products are under a new recall this morning

for. and oakland police are pushing for more money to increase their staffing. why? department leaders say the current levels are not enough. >> from ktvu, fox two news. this is mornings on two. >> well, good morning and welcome back to mornings on two. i'm dave clark. >> i'm gasia mikaelian. it's wednesday, april 10th steve we've been talking about the warm up. is this for sure the warmest day of the week i think it is inland. >> yes. there could be a few tomorrow that are closed, but i think today is the day for the warmer temps here. a coast now. the city was 67 yesterday with little to no fog. there's a lot more fog today, so my forecast highs around 6465. i don't see how the city hits 70. there's just no way 40 on the temps for many. even the city has dipped to 49. normal for april 10th is 50, now again the fog and low clouds are mainly confined just to the coast, but there's a heck of a lot more than yesterday. a few high clouds to the north. no biggie, but overall it's a mini

traffic goes out. oh, i'd say a couple of hundred yards and starts to fade just a little bit. at least it did a couple of minutes ago. but it looks like it's packed up again. so, busy commute on this wednesday morning time now. 732 dave, take it away. >> okay, frank. thank you. well, today, muslims around the world and right here in the bay area will mark the end of ramadan. the month long, fast communal prayers will be held in local mosques as muslims are preparing to break the fast and go back to their regular lives. a mosque in san francisco has been vandalized several times in the past week, apparently by the same person. ktvu is amanda quintana is in san francisco at that mosque with the details. amanda >> yes. >> so we are on sutter street where this mosque is, and you can see the windows are still broken outside. and this is all while the muslim community has been part ticipating in ramadan, that this vandalism happened at

least twice in the past week. so today they are celebrating the end of the holy month of ramadan. there are a lot of people that will be going to celebrations here downtown. now. surveillance video on social media shows this man smashing windows of the mosque with a skateboard. this happened on april third. the same man reportedly came back yesterday. he broke more windows and then he went into the mosque yelling islamophobic rhetoric. he allegedly got into an altercation with some someone and then threatened to people and wrote, you will burn in #### on the walls. now we have a photo showing the words after mosque leaders tried to paint over it. members of the muslim community here say, in this polarizing time, they want more protection. >> people think that islamophobia doesn't exist, but in reality, it happens every single day. a lot of, a lot of incidents being unreported. and

the truth is that police have other issues to worry about, and we're really asking for them, and the city to prioritize the community and make sure that there's more resources and the community is protected and. >> hala hijazi, a commissioner with the city's human rights commission who initially tweeted about these attacks, says the rise of islamophobic rhetoric, including from public officials, is contributing to violence like this. now. today, there are many celebrations in san francisco and all over the world celebrating eid. the end of ramadan and speaking with people. it sounds like some people are scared because of these incidents. they are scared. they are fearful, but others feel it is important to still celebrate and to come together as a community and this important holy time for the muslim community. live in san francisco. amanda quintana, ktvu , fox two news. >> amanda, thank you. happening

today, the oakland police department will present its proposed budget to the city administration. opd is working on addressing staffing issues, police command staff told a council safety committee. there are currently 708 officers on the job. the current police budget authorizes 712. the academy has 14 officers who are set to graduate next month. >> opd is not unique in the fact that we, along with other law enforcement agencies, have had a difficult time recruiting people into our academies. >> the police department budget is about $358 million for the current fiscal year. next year's budget is about $364 million. >> our time now 735 advocates for the homeless in antioch are pretty angry at the city for clearing out a homeless encampment near highway four. what is the point in this, other than just to take everything that they have left, including shelter? now they accused the police of towing away cars as well as parked arby's and

campers that people were living in without giving them a chance to remove them themselves. they also say that non-law enforcement city staffers were not there as they normally are. we tried to contact city officials, but so far haven't received a response. city leaders have said they repeatedly check on the encampments, and that the police warned the occupants several times about this eviction. >> an audit shows california spending billions on homelessness without tracking where the money is going. the review started when south bay state senator dave cortese visited one of the largest homeless encampments in san jose . he asked the city whether the money spent on housing programs was working. he says he found the data insufficient, so he and other lawmakers asked the state auditor to investigate. the audit examined two cities, san jose and san diego, between 2018 and 2023. >> you know, to improve upon, you know, some of these areas, these deficiencies and these

systemic issues that that the audit, calls out. >> auditors say a council responsible for coordinating the state's efforts against homelessness did not have a consistent method for gathering information about program costs and outcomes. council issued this response, saying the audit's findings underscore a need to continue to hold local governments accountable, primarily responsible for implementing these programs and collecting data on outcomes that the state can use to evaluate program effectiveness. >> time now. 737 supervisors in contra costa county just approved the new health care program for undocumented workers, pastors carol. >> we continue to make history and contra costa county now, the supervisors approved that program yesterday during their board meeting. >> it will dramatically expand health care services for people all across contra costa county, regardless of their documentation status. many of

those county residents are farmworkers in the agriculture industry. >> a new report details the outcome of the chp special operation in san francisco, where officers are helping police battle the fentanyl drug crisis. new numbers from the governor's office show since may of 2023, the chp has taken more than 40 pounds of fentanyl off the street. that's more than 9.5 million doses. chp also made almost 500 arrests. chp says its main focus is making traffic stops to help free up san francisco police. >> all right. time is 738. right back to frank mallicoat. what's the latest in our commute on this wednesday morning? >> well, we're going to talk about the fog a little bit, dave, because that's been an issue if you live in some of the coastal communities around the bay area. and that, of course, includes the golden gate bridge, which is shrouded with marine layer right now all morning long. keep in mind, if you're heading down highway one, say through pacifica and into half moon bay, if you're coming in from marin over that golden gate to give yourself a little extra

about this at 629. >> she is back in studio. we've seen some action already. yeah, right. >> when that bell rang this morning that was anticipated, the consumer price index increased in the month of march, about 0.4. it's up 3.5% from this time last year. and that is higher than economists expected. that sent the dow down more than 400 points. right when that opening bell rang this morning. it does mean the federal reserve is less likely to cut interest rates any time soon. the fed releases its notes from the march meeting later today, so investors will certainly be looking for any clues about policy moving forward. but that did change a bit this morning. taking a live look at the numbers, that initial knee jerk reaction calming a bit because the dow jones was down almost 500 points. now about 332, more than three quarters of a percent down, though the s&p 500 down three quarters of a percent as well. and the nasdaq slipping 141 points at this hour. about the same percentage wise, a new report confirms. the bay area tops the list of communities

who's been kind of busy a little better now. >> yeah, actually, south bay. i've been giving them a great report card all morning long, but things are starting to get a little busy down there. a couple accidents cropped up. let's take a look. northbound 101 san jose at tully road. this happened about 15 minutes ago. good size backup already. no injuries there, but going to take a little time to clear that area. highway 82, just a little north of sunnyvale. a fender bender there causing a slowdown. and another one that just got cleared up. 880 near the east foothills there, north of san jose. but that's caused a slowdown as well. as you head north, there is the san mateo bridge, folks heading from hayward into foster city, moving along nicely now. and once you get to the bay bridge, look at that. you just got to wait it out. half an hour ago. that was a mess. 801802 on the dot. now no problem whatsoever. getting into san francisco, however, if you're coming in from the east bay, that's a bit of a mess. we'll take a look at that. highway 24 and 680 on our next

set. that's a look at traffic. andre, take it away. >> all right, frank, thank you. well, today, muslims around the world and here in the bay area will mark the end of ramadan. the month long, fast, communal prayers will be held at local mosques as muslims prepare to break the fast and return to their regular lifestyles. and it comes as a mosque in san francisco has been vandalized multiple times in the last week, apparently by the same man. ktvu amanda quintana live in san francisco at a large celebration marking the end of ramadan, amanda. >> yeah, so this is a very large celebration. there are about a thousand people coming to this event here in san francisco today, and it's just about to get started. so we've been watching a lot of people in the muslim community come to this event today to mark the end of ramadan. but of course, what's fresh on many minds here is that a popular mosque that is just a few blocks away was vandalized at least twice in the past week. we have surveillance video on social media that shows a man

smashing windows of the mosque on sutter street with a skateboard. now, this happened on april 3rd. then this man reportedly came back again yesterday and he broke more windows, went into the mosque yelling islamophobic rhetoric. he allegedly got into an altercation threatening people and wrote, you will burn in #### on the walls there. now the photo shows the words after mosque leaders have been trying to paint over it. members of the muslim community say in this polarizing time, they want more protection, but it's also important to come together today , an attack on one of us is an attack on all of us, and we are a united community, and oftentimes, sadly, because of media and rhetoric, that's being spread, muslims are being looked at as hateful people or, terrorists of, of that sort. but i see peaceful people and i see

on hold for a few weeks for more lower court appeals. that means it will be almost two months before any possible enforcement. a judge has delayed a decision on whether the family members accused of killing a three year old girl in san jose should go to jail. the decision was supposed to be out yesterday, but the judge decided to let the attorneys on both sides present more evidence. prosecutors say the child's mother, grandfather and uncle killed the girl during an exorcism at a san jose church back in september. they say those family members believed the little girl had been possessed by a demon. we're learning the identity of a nine year old girl killed in a crash over the weekend in the east bay. >> diana hernandez tapia of oregon, was killed early sunday morning when the suv she was in crashed at the junction of interstate 680 and highway 242, in concord for women inside the vehicle were hospitalized. the male driver left the scene. no word yet from the highway patrol on what caused the crash or whether the driver has been found in santa rosa. >> some people there cannot call 911 right now because of a phone outage. it was caused by a

selected as test sites. many council members say the action helps ease the minds of school aged children, who worry when confronting large encampments. the council also took action to prevent large vehicles such as rvs, from parking near schools. >> a little bit of the wild west where people are going to park wherever they want to park because nobody's going to do anything about it, especially oversize vehicles where you can't see around them. and i think, perhaps we can prioritize, roadway safety. >> this two passed unanimously. the mayor says the city needs to step up providing services, including completion of a safe parking site at berryessa by investing in lower barrier interim solutions. >> we reduced unsheltered homelessness 10% year over year. we have another 784 interim units coming online, but some south bay unhoused advocates say until the broad array of services are in place, the most vulnerable will continue to suffer. >> i think it's just a tragedy.

greatest, what era were they playing? well, one thing that i think it's safe to say is not debatable. that is tara vanderveer and her success here at stanford. she's been called the goat. she'll be a hall of famer and really just a fierce advocate for women's basketball, a game that she loves so much. her record here at stanford, it speaks for itself. take a look at her resume here. all of her accolades. so she has over 1200 career victories. she's a three time ncaa champion, a 15 time pac 12 champion, a five time national coach of the year as he heard andre mention the winningest head coach in ncaa history, she also, if those things weren't enough, led the u.s. women's national team to a gold medal in the 96 atlanta olympic games. but she started her career as an unpaid graduate assistant at ohio state years later and a couple stints after that. she was hired here at

the s&p 500 and the nasdaq. now the drop this morning came after the latest data on inflation came in higher than expected. this morning, the labor department announced the consumer price index for march rose 0.4% and 3.5% from this time last year. it measures the average change in prices that consumers pay for key goods and services. the federal reserve waiting for inflation to drop to about 2% before it starts cutting interest rates. the fed releases its notes from the march meeting later today, and investors will certainly be looking for any clues about policy moving forward. but that definitely changed a bit. this morning with that latest report. well, you can get much more at costco than rotisserie chicken and bulk rolls of toilet paper. according to wells fargo research, costco is making 100 to $200 million a month from those gold bars it started selling. costco began selling the one ounce, 24 karat bars last october for about $2,000. it's estimated that costco only
